Chapter 14: The Galaxy Shimmers Across the Sky.
Bo Yu got into her car carrying the triangular talisman pouch. She tucked it into the inner pocket of her backpack and habitually patted the head of the well-behaved Xiexie inside.
Because Xie Yinwan somehow knew what had happened at the reservoir yesterday, Bo Yu wasn’t sure if the ghost had seen it herself or used some other method. She intentionally chatted with Xiexie while driving: “The smells outside really aren’t great. It’s still my… my bedroom that smells the best.”
“I really wish the Immortal would stay in my bedroom forever and not go anywhere else. Other places don’t smell good. An Immortal should stay in a fragrant place, shouldn’t she?”
“The Immortal is so beautiful; only a fragrant place is worthy of her. Otherwise, if she smells the stench outside, she’ll be so uncomfortable.”
Inside the bag, Xie Yinwan swayed as the car went over a speed bump. She wasn’t paying attention to Bo Yu’s words at all; instead, she was glaring intensely at that talisman pouch.
The stench of that rotten Taoist, Jin Xuan!
The sun had risen around 5:00 AM, and now it was past 8:00 AM. The sunlight was bright but not scorching. A gentle breeze blew, clouds drifted lightly, and roadside leaves swayed. Dappled light and shadows fell across Bo Yu’s car as she took Xiexie to work under the diamond-like sparkle of the morning.
When Bo Yu arrived at Win-Win Investment Company, Zhu Ying hadn’t arrived yet. After greeting several colleagues, Bo Yu walked into Zhu Ying’s office and began testing perfumes.
Zhu Ying loved collecting perfume bottles; she bought anything that looked beautiful and displayed them in the cabinet in her office. Bo Yu set down her bag and began spraying and sniffing the perfumes one by one. They were all open, but some sprayed instantly while others required several pumps before suddenly releasing a large mist. Eventually, Bo Yu sprayed so much she felt dizzy and lightheaded.
These scents were too strong for Bo Yu, who never used perfume. Thinking that Xie Yinwan might not like her smelling like this either, she finally stopped. She turned on the ventilation system, picked up Xiexie, and lay on the sofa to rest her head, waiting for the scent to dissipate and her mind to clear.
Xie Yinwan was also dazed by the fumes. Resting on Bo Yu’s body, she was furious that Bo Yu was spraying such nonsense.
The reason Bo Yu could afford to take a week off work wasn’t just because of the Bo family’s status, but her own. This investment company was originally registered by Zhu Ying at Bo Yu’s suggestion during their freshman year. They had sought funding from their mutual friend, the superstar Lin Zhaoyue. Thus, with Zhu Ying providing the labor, Lin Zhaoyue the capital, and Bo Yu the strategy, the company gained its current value and prestige.
Bo Yu didn’t like being seen as a boss. Everyone in the company thought she was just an analyst close to President Zhu. As for her family, Bo Mi knew the truth, the Grandmother and Aunt pretended not to know, and the others were completely in the dark.
“President Yu, you finally came to work! I’ve saved up so many… what is that smell? Bo Yu, what did you do in here?”
In the inner office, Bo Yu was resting on the sofa with the doll. Hearing Zhu Ying’s voice, she quickly flipped over to face the back of the sofa, pretending to sleep.
Zhu Ying ran inside, the scent growing even stronger. “Bo Yu?!”
Bo Yu stayed still, faking sleep.
“You’re still pretending? What’s going on? Before, when I asked you to try my perfumes, you refused. Today you sneakily spray them and then pretend to sleep to avoid admitting it?” Zhu Ying covered her nose, leaning over to glare at Bo Yu.
Bo Yu had to open her eyes. She looked back at Zhu Ying and insisted stubbornly, “I wasn’t faking, and I wasn’t sneaking. I was just a bit bored and tried a couple of sprays.”
“A couple? It smells like ten bottles broke in here! I don’t care about the perfume, but the scent is overwhelming.” Zhu Ying frowned.
“Actually, it’s already much better,” Bo Yu whispered.
“…”
Zhu Ying was about to bicker more when she noticed Bo Yu’s fair, soft cheeks were flushed pink, and there was light sweat on her nose and neck. Surprised, she asked, “Are you in love?”
Bo Yu: “?”
Zhu Ying: “Your face is so red, you look like you’re shy from a passionate romance—or you’re daydreaming about someone. That’s it, right? That’s why you’re using perfume?”
Bo Yu: “…”
“No,” Bo Yu sighed, turning around with Xiexie. “I accidentally made myself dizzy with your perfume. I’m seeing double right now.”
Zhu Ying: “…I give up.”
Bo Yu smiled and adjusted Xiexie’s posture, letting the doll sit on her rising and falling chest. She waved the doll’s hand at Zhu Ying. “Xiexie, say good morning to Auntie Zhu Ying.”
She was used to treating Xiexie like a daughter. If a friend came over, she had to say hello.
Sitting on Bo Yu’s chest, Xie Yinwan’s ears twitched imperceptibly.
—Since you like her so much, why don’t you just marry Zhu Ying?
So this was Zhu Ying.
—Are you in love?
They weren’t in a relationship, which meant this Zhu Ying was secretly pining for Bo Yu. Xie Yinwan stared at Zhu Ying coldly, wishing she could tear her to pieces.
Today, Xiexie was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and baggy jeans with rolled-up cuffs. Her hair was in a high ponytail with a strawberry clip, and she wore a work ID around her neck that read: “Name: Xiexie; Position: Secretary.” She looked like an adorable little office worker.
The doll was smiling with a look of pure innocence.
But for some reason, Zhu Ying felt Xiexie’s gaze today wasn’t innocent at all. Instead, it felt sinister and cold, filled with ill intent. It was very strange.
“Good morning, Xiexie,” Zhu Ying bent down to greet the doll, then asked curiously, “Bo Yu, did you re-sew the doll’s eyes?”
Bo Yu looked at Xiexie with a smile. “No, why?”
Zhu Ying said puzzledly, “I feel like she’s glaring at me. Maybe her eyes are just too big, so I misunderstood?”
Since Zhu Ying had found her own excuse, Bo Yu laughed and stroked Xiexie’s beautiful eyes, praising her: “What a cute, big-eyed baby.”
Xie Yinwan glared coldly at Bo Yu as well. But Bo Yu didn’t notice the coldness in the doll’s eyes.
“Why did you bring her to work today?” Zhu Ying continued to wonder.
Bo Yu: “I felt like it. I’ll be bringing her every day from now on.”
Zhu Ying: “…Fine. Well, rest your head. You’ve been gone a week and my office is piled with documents waiting for your approval, but you can look at them tomorrow.”
Bo Yu: “Mhm.”
Zhu Ying squeezed onto the edge of the sofa by Bo Yu’s legs, patting Bo Yu’s leg as they chatted.
But the more they talked, the more Zhu Ying felt Xiexie was glaring at her. It sent a shiver down her spine. She stopped talking and got up to head back to her desk.
However, she had only taken two steps when she suddenly stumbled forward. With a thud, she sprawled onto the floor, barely catching herself with her hands to save her face.
Zhu Ying: “!”
How did she fall?! Who tripped her? She felt like someone had definitely stuck a foot out!
Hearing the noise, Bo Yu opened her eyes to see Zhu Ying splayed out like a frog. Half-startled and half-laughing, she went over to help her up. “Get up, get up! How did you fall while just walking? Did the perfume make you dizzy too? Does it hurt?”
Zhu Ying: “…It hurts like hell! So much!”
Xie Yinwan sat on the sofa, looking on with total indifference. If this Zhu Ying dares to touch Bo Yu’s leg again, I’ll chop her hands off!
At noon, Bo Yu went to Jin Xuan’s shop to pick up her pre-boiled medicine. Jin Xuan wasn’t there; she was likely catching up on sleep. After thanking the clerk, Bo Yu went to a nearby supermarket.
She bought a bag of marshmallows and a bag of hard candies. Back in her car, she calmly drank the medicine—it was so bitter she wanted to vomit. Immediately, she stuffed three marshmallows into her mouth, chewing quickly to mask the taste with sugar.
She didn’t know if Xie Yinwan was watching, but she was worried that if the ghost saw her face contorted in disgust, she might be repulsed and stop coming. After all, Xie Yinwan was already talking about smelling other humans. To see the ghost again, Bo Yu refused to show even a hint of struggle while taking the medicine.
“This medicine tastes great,” Bo Yu lied to herself. She turned to Xiexie, who was buckled into the passenger seat. “I remember someone online saying two types of body wash are very fragrant. Let’s go buy them. If I change scents every day, the Immortal might like it, don’t you think?”
Xie Yinwan stared at her. Bo Yu laughed and patted the doll’s head, then drove off to buy the new body washes. She used a rose-scented one that evening and waited for Xie Yinwan after her bath.
However, before the ghost arrived, Bo Mi did. Holding two wine glasses in one hand and a bottle of red wine in the other, she stood at the door. “Xiao Yu, come have a drink with me on the terrace.”
Bo Mi loved a small drink for any reason—happiness, sadness, boredom. Bo Yu couldn’t drink because of her herbal medicine, but she could accompany her sister. She glanced back at her bedroom longingly before following Bo Mi upstairs.
Bo Yu’s restriction on going out at night meant she couldn’t leave the estate. Since the grounds were protected by charms, the Grandmother felt it was safe for her to be in the yard or on the roof.
The night was deep. A silver moon hung in the dark blue sky, with thin clouds drifting past, occasionally veiling its face in a dreamy, beautiful dance. However, because of the many streetlights in the courtyard, the stars were faint and hard to see. It was a bit disappointing.
Bo Yu looked up and sighed softly, “It would be nice if the lights were off.”
As soon as she spoke, every light in the courtyard vanished. In that instant, the stars in the night sky became brilliantly clear—suddenly, a magnificent, shimmering galaxy filled the sky!
Bo Mi looked at the dark courtyard in surprise, while Bo Yu looked up at the sky with joy. Xie Yinwan was here!
Dressed in her white, wide-sleeved celestial robes, Xie Yinwan floated above the courtyard in the night breeze. Bathed in moonlight, her sleeves and hair fluttered elegantly.
But she was looking down at Bo Yu. Her gaze was very cold.
