Chapter 57: Waiting for You to Pick Me Up for the Wedding
After lunch at Li Zhiyi’s home, Cheng Yi took her to B University.
From the Mistress’s stories, Meng Qingwu learned more about what had happened to Cheng Yi over the years. She could feel Cheng Yi’s sincerity in wanting her to understand the reality of those four blank years.
Holding hands, they walked through the campus of B University—a familiar ritual from their past. They strolled by the quiet lake and through the serene woods, doing the things they once thought were the most romantic as a young couple. Following Cheng Yi’s lead, Meng Qingwu could almost see the phantom of Cheng Yi’s back through the changing seasons, walking these paths in lonely silence.
Her nose felt a bit sore. Feeling a wave of resentment, she reached up to pinch and knead Cheng Yi’s face like dough, ignoring her dignity. “Look at what a terrible decision you made back then!” she muttered through gritted teeth. They had missed four years for nothing.
Cheng Yi blinked, looking apologetic and pleading for mercy. Seeing this, Meng Qingwu felt like she had punched a bale of cotton—her anger simply deflated. She rolled her eyes and decided not to dwell on the past anymore.
“Let’s go. Come back with me to see my mom,” Meng Qingwu said flatly. It suddenly occurred to her that she had never formally introduced Cheng Yi to Ms. Meng.
Cheng Yi’s eyes widened. She spoke softly, sounding a bit startled and panicked. “Right now?”
She couldn’t quite imagine facing Ms. Meng. No matter how little she followed corporate gossip, she knew Ms. Meng’s reputation in the business world. They called her a “madwoman.” Why? Because if you messed with her, she’d bite back until you were ruined. Could someone who had once hurt her daughter survive her scrutiny?
“There’s no time like the present. Since you took me to see your teacher, I’ll take you to see my mom,” Meng Qingwu said nonchalantly. Of course, she wouldn’t admit she was doing this a bit mischievously on purpose.
Cheng Yi: “…” “I haven’t prepared anything yet,” she said, her expression turning bitter.
“You don’t need to prepare anything, because she won’t like whatever you bring anyway.”
Cheng Yi: “…”
…
Ultimately, she followed Meng Qingwu to the Meng residence. Standing at the front gate, her heart rate accelerated uncontrollably.
Now, only Meng Qingwu and Meng Shuyu remained in the Meng family. Because it was just a mother and daughter, many people used to think they were easy targets and tried to annex their assets. The result was clear: those people became the nutrients that allowed the Meng family to grow stronger.
Cheng Yi took a deep breath, psyching herself up. Seeing this rare display of cowardice, Meng Qingwu burst into laughter. “Is this really necessary?” Back when she met Cheng Zhan’s parents, she hadn’t been nearly this nervous.
Cheng Yi shook her head. Qingwu didn’t understand. Anyone facing Ms. Meng needed time for psychological preparation—especially since she was the one who had made off with her daughter.
“Are you ready?” Meng Qingwu glanced at her. Cheng Yi pursed her lips and nodded solemnly. Meng Qingwu arched an eyebrow and opened the door.
Ms. Meng seemed to have been waiting for them. She sat on the sofa with an unreadable expression, not even turning to look at them as they entered. This made Cheng Yi even more uneasy, but she forced herself to look composed; she didn’t want to show weakness in front of Ms. Meng.
“Mom,” Meng Qingwu greeted her mother.
Meng Shuyu looked up, gave a faint hum of acknowledgement, and then fixed her gaze on Cheng Yi. Cheng Yi’s heart tightened, but she managed a polite smile, terrified of embarrassing Meng Qingwu.
“Mom, let me introduce you. This is my girlfriend, Cheng Yi.” Meng Qingwu took Cheng Yi’s hand and gave it a little wave in front of her mother.
Looking at the two young women, Meng Shuyu thought to herself: Lan Xining really did have a stroke of luck. That prank actually brought them together.
“Mhm. I see,” Meng Shuyu nodded.
Meng Qingwu was somewhat amazed by her mother’s calm. Who would have thought that this Ms. Meng, who used to show pure disgust at the mention of homosexuality, would be like this now?
“Auntie,” Cheng Yi called out.
“Sit.”
Meng Qingwu pulled Cheng Yi down to sit, wondering privately where Lan Xining was. Ever since those two had reached an understanding, Lan Xining had been incredibly clingy. “Where’s Auntie?” she asked.
Meng Shuyu sipped her tea calmly. “She went back to the Lan house.” There was a banquet at the Lan family home tonight, and as a daughter of the family, she had to go help manage things.
“Oh.” Meng Qingwu fell silent.
With the mother and daughter not talking, the atmosphere became awkward. Cheng Yi was never one for small talk; in this stifling silence, she felt like she was sitting on pins and needles.
“Cheng Yi,” Meng Shuyu said suddenly.
“Yes, Auntie.” Cheng Yi sat bolt upright.
“You like Qingwu?” Her tone was still indifferent.
Cheng Yi’s expression was tense but extremely serious. She nodded. “Yes. I love Qingwu.”
Meng Shuyu nodded. She knew roughly what had happened between them. There was no need to ask for the reasons behind the old breakup, but… “Then how do I know you won’t abandon my daughter again for some other reason in the future?” Her gaze turned sharp, piercing through Cheng Yi.
She knew about the past, but that didn’t mean she had forgiven the pain Cheng Yi had caused her daughter.
Cheng Yi’s face dimmed. Her hands gripped the fabric of her trousers tightly.
“Mom…” Meng Qingwu started.
“Be quiet!” Meng Shuyu snapped with a cold glance. Meng Qingwu choked back her words.
Cheng Yi lowered her eyes before Meng Qingwu’s mother and said softly, “I don’t know how to make you believe me or trust me with Qingwu, but from now on, I will do my absolute best to make her happy and give you peace of mind.”
Meng Shuyu watched her in silence.
“Also, I will transfer all my assets to Qingwu. I know you likely don’t think much of them, but it’s my way of showing my commitment,” Cheng Yi continued.
“I am not ‘handing Qingwu over’ to you,” Meng Shuyu said suddenly.
“Huh?” Cheng Yi looked up, confused.
“It is the Cheng family handing you over to Qingwu!” Ms. Meng declared with power.
Cheng Yi: “…” Is there a difference? She turned to look at Meng Qingwu.
Meng Qingwu went from stunned to amused, shaking her head helplessly. She hadn’t expected Ms. Meng to be competitive about this, though it didn’t really matter to her or Cheng Yi. After all, they didn’t really distinguish between “top” or “bottom”…
“Oh. Then when it’s time for the wedding, Qingwu, remember to come to my house to pick me up as the bride,” Cheng Yi said after a pause, nodding seriously.
Meng Shuyu: “…” Aren’t you even going to try to argue for your side?
However, it was exactly this sensible attitude that improved Meng Shuyu’s opinion of her. Her expression softened significantly. On the other hand, Meng Qingwu turned to Cheng Yi, her eyes conveying a clear message: When did I say I was marrying you?
Cheng Yi blinked, looking quite innocent.
Meng Qingwu: “…” Forget it. I won’t argue with this fool. If I’m the one picking up the bride, so be it.
This “meeting the parent” was remarkably casual, but for Cheng Yi, it resolved a major lingering worry. She had expected to be rejected by Meng Shuyu, but she wasn’t. While the woman was still a bit cold, her attitude was enough to make Cheng Yi feel secure.
“Since you are together and have mentioned marriage, we should arrange a time for both sets of parents to meet,” Meng Shuyu said flatly.
Meng Qingwu: “…I think there’s no need to rush the wedding.” They had just gotten back together; they hadn’t even had a chance to date yet, and now they were sprinting toward marriage?
Meng Shuyu looked at her. “Why don’t you ask the person next to you if she’s in a rush?”
Meng Qingwu turned to Cheng Yi and saw her head drooping, her expression dim and looking very dejected.
Meng Qingwu: “…Don’t act pitiful. It won’t work.” She’s just trying to make me soft-hearted. They were still so young; was it necessary to enter the “grave” of marriage so early?
Cheng Yi looked up and smiled gently at her. “It’s okay. I respect your decision. Tell me whenever you feel like getting married.”
Meng Qingwu: “…” Damn it, now I feel even more guilty. “Fine, fine, fine! We’ll do it! It’s you who’s ‘marrying into’ the family anyway!”
In the end, Meng Qingwu gave up. They had been entangled for so many years; what else could possibly change? Since they had decided on each other, a wedding sooner or later was essentially the same thing.
Cheng Yi’s eyes lit up, then slowly dimmed again as she asked softly, “Are you sincere?” She didn’t want Meng Qingwu to marry her with hesitation.
Meng Qingwu rolled her eyes at her. “No, I’m marrying someone else.” I already agreed, and now she’s playing coy after getting what she wanted.
Cheng Yi wasn’t bothered. She smiled softly, her gaze never leaving Meng Qingwu, her heart softening the more she looked. Can we finally build a little home of our own?
Across from them, Meng Shuyu sipped her tea calmly, thinking these young people were truly a handful of awkwardness. Luckily for her, Lan Xining wasn’t there to hear that thought, or she would have coughed up blood. You have the nerve to call others awkward? You’ve been the ultimate “awkward monster” for over twenty years!
…
Ever since learning Meng Qingwu was willing to marry her, the smile on Cheng Yi’s face hadn’t faded. Her gaze toward Meng Qingwu was so intense it was practically visible. Anyone seeing them would know exactly what their relationship was. Cheng Yi didn’t mind. In an era where one could openly look at their lover, one should cherish it and love boldly.
“Stop looking!” Meng Qingwu reached up to cover Cheng Yi’s eyes. Ever since they left the Meng house and got into the car, this woman hadn’t stopped staring. If her gaze wasn’t so gentle and heart-melting, Qingwu would have thought she was a stalker!
With her vision obscured by Qingwu’s palm, Cheng Yi’s smile deepened. She asked softly, “Why shouldn’t I look? My girlfriend is very beautiful.”
Saying her girlfriend was beautiful in such a warm tone reminded Meng Qingwu of the night when Cheng Yi had murmured endearments while kissing the beauty mark under her eye.
Meng Qingwu felt a familiar stir in her body.
“Qingwu, do you want to come over and see my house?”
