Chapter 56: After All the Twists and Turns, It’s Still Her.
Faint, hurried gasps echoed in the darkness. Meng Qingwu’s chest heaved rhythmically, yet she pressed herself tightly against Cheng Yi, unwilling to pull away.
Cheng Yi was in the same state, perhaps breathing even harder than Meng Qingwu. She lightly caressed Qingwu’s back, helping both of them steady their racing heartbeats.
“Can you still manage a shower?” Meng Qingwu asked.
This person was so drained right now; she looked ready to fall asleep right there on the spot.
Cheng Yi’s eyes were half-lidded, embracing Meng Qingwu with deep attachment. Her voice was soft, almost like a spoiled child’s: “Wait a little longer.”
The night encouraged the spread of tenderness. Feeling this emotion again made Cheng Yi reluctant to let go so soon. Hearing this, Meng Qingwu didn’t rush her; she closed her eyes and together they felt the lingering afterglow of their passion.
After lying together for quite some time, they finally got up to clean themselves in the bathroom. Tossing the discarded sheets casually onto the floor, they lay back down on the bed and stretched lazily.
Cheng Yi crawled over to lie beside her, resting a hand on the curve of Qingwu’s waist. Facing her, she asked, “Back then… what did you actually like about me?”
She was still a bit puzzled. At the same time, a question began to form: does liking someone strictly require a reason?
She carefully recalled her feelings for Meng Qingwu. Besides initially thinking this person was incredibly beautiful, it was that pitiable beauty mark under her eye and those eyes she couldn’t bear to refuse.
Meng Qingwu looked at the confused woman, closed her eyes, and said lazily, “Haven’t I told you before?”
“To me, you felt like an old friend from the first sight.”
Few people could seize her gaze at first glance the way she had, to the point where Qingwu had spent the entire night trying to find ways to get close to her.
She raised a hand and traced a finger lightly over Cheng Yi’s heart, her tone languid: “As for later… I just felt you were wonderful in every way.”
Her serious demeanor was endearing, and her gentleness was intoxicating. At that time, she just felt this was the one—because except for her, no one else could stir her soul like this.
Cheng Yi held her tighter, affectionately nuzzling her face against Qingwu’s. Then, neither spoke again, remaining in each other’s arms until dawn.
…
Early the next morning, a phone alarm rang.
Meng Qingwu, irritated by the noise, grabbed the blanket and pulled it over her head, trying to escape the annoying sound.
“Mmm—”
A soft moan came from beside her. Soon, the alarm was turned off.
Meng Qingwu’s foggy brain cleared instantly. She sat up, and seeing the bleary-eyed Cheng Yi lying next to her, she finally remembered they truly were together last night. And they had explored each other’s worlds quite thoroughly.
She smiled, reached out to rub Cheng Yi’s face, and leaned down to kiss the corner of her lips. In a slightly raspy morning voice, she asked, “Do you have things to do today?”
She had noticed that the alarm didn’t come from her own phone.
“Mmm—” Cheng Yi half-squinted and smiled. “I have to go to my teacher’s house for dinner today.”
“Teacher?”
“Professor Li Zhiyi. The one you all wanted to hire for a project before.”
Meng Qingwu remembered the man; a giant in his field isn’t easily forgotten.
“Will you come with me?” Cheng Yi opened her eyes, tugging at Qingwu’s sleeve and shaking it like she was acting cute.
Meng Qingwu looked down at her. “In what capacity?”
Cheng Yi laughed. “As his student’s girlfriend.”
Meng Qingwu gave a light laugh, signifying her consent.
Cheng Yi sat up, checked her phone, and then looked back at Meng Qingwu, saying somewhat hesitantly, “I need to send a message to Qi Yu to ask how her foot is doing.”
“After all, she was injured because of me,” Cheng Yi explained.
“Send it. I’m not so petty that I’d mind that,” Meng Qingwu rolled her eyes. Is that necessary? She’s making me look like a total jealous wreck.
Cheng Yi smiled secretly. she just didn’t want any possibility of another misunderstanding with Meng Qingwu. She sent the greeting to Qi Yu, and after receiving a reply, her brow relaxed significantly.
“Getting up?” Seeing her like this, Meng Qingwu didn’t ask more. She just stood up and looked at her. Seeing Cheng Yi’s messy, sleepy appearance made her want to smile.
This person appeared so elegant and aloof to the world, yet she was the only one who got to see this private side of her. Her hidden sense of possessiveness was deeply satisfied.
“Yeah,” Cheng Yi got out of bed, her voice warm. “I’ll make breakfast for you. After breakfast, we’ll go to Teacher’s house together, okay?”
Li Zhiyi and his wife had no children. As his most prized student, Cheng Yi often visited them to chat and share a meal so they wouldn’t be too lonely.
“Okay,” Meng Qingwu nodded. She didn’t have anything planned for today anyway.
Eating Cheng Yi’s breakfast again, the warmth in Qingwu’s heart chased away the morning chill. Looking at the woman sitting opposite her, her expression grew increasingly soft.
After all these years, after all the twists and turns, it was still her.
…
After the simple breakfast, since it was her first time visiting and she was going as Cheng Yi’s girlfriend, Meng Qingwu refused to go empty-handed. While Cheng Yi was picking out gifts, she wandered around beside her.
“What do your teacher and his wife like?”
Cheng Yi looked up and saw her slightly nervous expression. She laughed. “They don’t lack anything. If you really want to bring something, bring some fruit. They both love fruit.”
Meng Qingwu gave a soft “oh.” That sounded simple enough.
Eventually, the two arrived with a pile of gifts. Meng Qingwu finally met the legendary Professor Li Zhiyi. His slightly graying hair was combed neatly back, and his well-fitted Zhongshan suit made him look a bit old-fashioned. However, when he smiled, one could feel a warmth radiating from within.
“Why did you bring so much stuff?” Li Zhiyi was clearly delighted to see Cheng Yi, though he mock-scolded her for the gifts.
“It’s a tribute,” Cheng Yi laughed warmly.
Li Zhiyi didn’t dwell on it. Instead, he turned his gaze toward Meng Qingwu and laughed heartily. “You must be Ms. Meng, right?”
Meng Qingwu was surprised. “You know me?”
“Come in and chat first.” The smile on Li Zhiyi’s face deepened. After welcoming them in, he called out to his wife in the kitchen: “Yunshu, Xiaoyi brought her girlfriend over!”
A clattering sound came from the kitchen, and soon a gentle woman in an apron appeared. Her features carried the charm of years of refinement. Seeing Cheng Yi and Meng Qingwu, a wide smile broke across her face.
“Xiaoyi’s girlfriend? I take it this is Ms. Meng?” She also identified Meng Qingwu immediately.
Now Meng Qingwu was even more astonished. If Li Zhiyi knew her, it made some sense—she had sought him out for a project. But if his wife knew too, there was only one explanation.
She looked at Cheng Yi and, as expected, saw her face turning slightly red with embarrassment.
Seeing Cheng Yi like this, the smile in Meng Qingwu’s eyes deepened. She greeted the couple: “Teacher, Mistress, I am Meng Qingwu, Cheng Yi’s girlfriend.”
She directly followed Cheng Yi’s way of addressing them as elders. This gesture clearly pleased the couple, and their gaze toward Meng Qingwu became increasingly affectionate.
Once they sat down, Meng Qingwu asked the question from the door again: “How did you both know about me?”
Would this wooden block, Cheng Yi, actually mention me on her own?
Hearing this, the two elders burst into laughter. The more they laughed, the more distressed Cheng Yi became, calling out shyly: “Teacher! Mistress!”
Clearly, she wanted them to stop.
“Haha, she’s actually shy!” The wife laughed even harder. Watching the interaction between Meng Qingwu and Cheng Yi, she felt a sense of relief. Just from the way their eyes met, one could tell their sincerity for each other.
“This child won’t let us speak,” the wife teased, pulling Meng Qingwu close. “Once, she came to see us and drank too much with Old Li. She sat there crying and calling your name. It gave me and Old Li quite a fright back then.”
As she spoke, she seemed to recall the scene; her expression was a mix of heartache and amusement, and her gaze toward Meng Qingwu grew even softer.
Meng Qingwu froze. Cheng Yi called my name while drunk?
She looked at Cheng Yi, who was now so embarrassed she couldn’t meet Qingwu’s eyes at all. Cheng Yi dragged the Professor into the kitchen to deal with the fruit they brought.
Meng Qingwu’s eyes curved, but her heart began to ache. During those years of her own sadness, how could Cheng Yi have been any better?
The Professor’s wife pulled her aside and started sharing stories about Cheng Yi. From her, Qingwu learned a lot about what Cheng Yi had gone through over the years. She finally understood that when Cheng Yi said she would take her through those four missing years, this was the kind of thing she meant.
Her heart softened completely, all because of the woman named Cheng Yi.
…
When Cheng Yi and the Professor emerged with the fruit platter, they saw Meng Qingwu and the wife chatting animatedly. Cheng Yi couldn’t help but smile softly.
Li Zhiyi noticed the change in her, his eyes full of relief. “That girl is very good.”
They were people who had lived most of their lives; they trusted their judgment. The girl had a righteous spirit, and her conduct was impeccable. That kind of aura didn’t belong to someone with ill intentions. Most importantly, she had made Cheng Yi much softer.
The old Cheng Yi was like a hedgehog wrapped in quills; except for a few close people, she let no one near. But now, that sharp coldness was receding, replaced by a significant softening.
“Have some fruit first.” Cheng Yi set the platter down. After the elders started, she picked up a bright red strawberry and held it to Meng Qingwu’s lips, looking at her with gentle eyes.
The two elders saw this, smiled, and very tactfully looked away.
This time, it was Meng Qingwu’s turn to be embarrassed. She glanced at the elders pretending not to see and whispered a scolding: “What are you doing? Teacher and Mistress are watching!” Her face was flushed, and she refused to open her mouth.
Seeing her shy expression, Cheng Yi laughed as if she had won a round, coaxing her softly: “It’s okay. Teacher and the others are like family.”
Meng Qingwu glared: “How come I never see you feed me in front of my mom?”
Cheng Yi: “…”
Have we ever even sat together with her? If not, how could I feed you…
