My Ex-Girlfriend Has Always Been Secretly in Love with Me - Chapter 3
Although Chu Qingyu’s mind was filled with chaotic thoughts and she could not understand what Ling Yun was thinking, she still forwarded Ling Yun’s contact information to Yu Yixian.
Pretty Freshman: Thank you, Senior! / Kitten doing a backflip.
Lights: You’re welcome.
Chu Qingyu put down her phone and began to stare at Ling Yun’s back. Suddenly, the phone on the desk chimed. She watched as Ling Yun picked up the phone, paused for a long time before her fingers finally moved, and then, after another interval, the phone began to chime repeatedly. Ling Yun did not put the phone down, but she didn’t reply to the message either; she just stared silently at the chat interface. Chu Qingyu estimated the time—after about another five minutes, Ling Yun’s fingers moved again.
Chu Qingyu: …
I don’t get it.
Chu Qingyu gave up on trying to figure out what was going on in Ling Yun’s mind. Although she had pursued Ling Yun in the past, at that time she was mostly just a superficial fan enjoying some banter. After all, a pure “iceberg beauty” like Ling Yun was very rare, and she had never dated someone like that; it was only natural to feel a momentary itch of curiosity.
However, before she could even start her pursuit, Ling Yun had seen through her little scheme and told her directly to her face that she did not like girls, and that if she couldn’t accept that, she should apply to change dorms.
Since the person had been so clear, Chu Qingyu was not one to be overbearing. Besides, her affection was as light as a drizzle, so she retracted two droplets of it. Furthermore, even if they couldn’t date, being friends was quite nice; living under the same roof with such a beautiful person would keep anyone in a good mood.
Later on, the two of them could be considered good friends. Chu Qingyu believed she understood Ling Yun well; after all, they had been roommates for four years, were both technicians on the same project, and shared a certain level of tacit understanding.
But this time, she was truly baffled. Did Ling Yun have feelings for that pretty freshman or not?
Yu Yixian had not expected Chu Qingyu to hand over Ling Yun’s contact information so readily; she had thought she would have to spend more effort persuading her. However, since she had it, she immediately added Ling Yun as a friend.
While waiting for the request to be accepted, Yu Yixian tapped on Ling Yun’s profile picture to observe it. It was a rather poorly shaped candied hawthorn (tanghulu). The background looked like a hallway and was quite dark, which ironically made the strangely shaped tanghulu stand out more.
This profile picture was quite interesting. Did Ling Yun like eating tanghulu?
What a coincidence! She had made them before!
Yu Yixian touched her chin and began to think about finding time to practice the technique of boiling sugar again. Although she had made them before, it had been a while and she was definitely a bit rusty.
After observing the profile picture, Yu Yixian began to study Ling Yun’s WeChat display name: [Not of the Human World (Fei Ren Jian)].
Forget it, she couldn’t understand that, but Ling Yun had accepted her friend request!
Yu Yixian immediately picked the cutest sticker from her collection and sent it over.
[X: Hello, Senior Ling! / Kitten waving cutely.JPG]
Yu Yixian watched, but Ling Yun did not reply; she assumed she must be busy.
[X: Senior must be very busy! Then please rest early, I won’t disturb you!]
[X: Looking forward to our next meeting!]
Yu Yixian put down her phone as Wang Xiaoyue came out of the bathroom and called her to get ready for bed.
“Alright, coming.” Yu Yixian stood up to change into her pajamas, grabbed her bath towel and towel, and was just about to go wash up when she saw her phone suddenly light up.
Someone had sent her a message.
Yu Yixian walked over to the phone and found it was a message from Ling Yun.
[Ling Yun: It’s alright.]
Yu Yixian was stunned, her eyes lighting up with surprise. Ling Yun was saying she wasn’t busy, which meant she didn’t think Yu Yixian was bothering her!
Yu Yixian didn’t want to take a shower anymore; she sat directly in the hanging chair and started chatting with Ling Yun.
[X: Did you eat dinner tonight, Senior~]
After waiting a while.
[Ling Yun: I ate. How about you?]
Seeing that Ling Yun had actually asked her back, Yu Yixian immediately shook her head and tail in delight. Wang Xiaoyue, who was to the side, came over and tapped on her desk.
“My lady, are you not going to take a shower?”
Yu Yixian hugged her phone and looked at Wang Xiaoyue with a smile like a little fox. “I want to chat with Senior first, you guys go ahead~”
Wang Xiaoyue was speechless, sighing and shaking her head as she went: “Sigh, a love-struck brain, truly a love-struck brain.”
Yu Yixian laughed and reached out to playfully swat at her. Wang Xiaoyue ran away laughing, making a face at her.
After the commotion, Yu Yixian almost forgot she hadn’t answered yet, so she quickly typed:
[X: I finished eating too. I went to have hotpot with my roommates today~]
[X: It’s a new place that opened in Wanda Plaza. The taste is quite good, Senior can go try it with friends when you have time~]
[Ling Yun: Okay.]
Yu Yixian thought of a few more topics. Although the number of characters in each of the other person’s replies was small, every sentence received a response. Yu Yixian swung happily in the hanging chair.
She had thought Ling Yun would hate her because of that scene earlier in the afternoon. Once they got more familiar, she would find an opportunity to explain; she didn’t want Ling Yun to misunderstand anything.
After Ye Qian finished washing up, she looked at the time; it was almost 11 o’clock. Even though the school didn’t cut the electricity on weekends, they would turn off the hot water, and there would be no hot water after 11. She walked behind Yu Yixian and gently pushed her. “Yixian, go take a shower first; it’s almost time.”
Yu Yixian looked at the time in surprise. It really was; she hadn’t realized she had been chatting with Ling Yun for so long!
“Okay, I’m going right now. Love you!” Yu Yixian turned back and made a small heart gesture at Ye Qian.
Ye Qian shook her head with a smile, looking at Yu Yixian with eyes like a mother hen watching her chick. She patted her head and returned to her own desk to start her skincare routine.
[X: Senior, I’m going to shower first, otherwise there won’t be any hot water soon TAT]
[X: What time do you sleep? Can I still chat with you? / Kitten peeking.JPG]
[Ling Yun: You can. Go shower.]
“Yay!” Yu Yixian threw her phone onto the bed in excitement, grabbed her bath towel, and rushed into the bathroom. The others looked at each other; Tang Jia looked confused, while Wang Xiaoyue and Ye Qian gave a helpless smile.
Da, da, da.
Yu Yixian ran back out looking embarrassed. “Forgot to bring something, hehe.”
She finished her shower just before 11 o’clock. Yu Yixian sat at her desk to start her skincare routine, with her phone charging to the side; she couldn’t help but glance at the phone from the corner of her eye.
The skincare routine that usually relaxed her felt very agonizing today. Once she finally finished, she immediately picked up her phone and opened WeChat.
[Ling Yun: Rest early. Goodnight.]
Although she was a little disappointed that she couldn’t keep chatting today, she had said goodnight to her!
Yu Yixian was happy again.
Over the next few days, whenever Yu Yixian had free time, she would look for opportunities to chat with Ling Yun—about two birds fighting on the road, a new delicious dish at the cafeteria window, and so on. Finally, Wednesday arrived.
There were no morning classes on Wednesday, so everyone had tacitly turned off their morning alarms. Afraid of disturbing them, Yu Yixian sat up the moment her single alarm went off.
She hadn’t slept well the night before because of her excitement, and her eyes still held a lingering haze of sleepiness. It took her a while to fully wake up.
She washed up quietly, changed her clothes, and grabbed her phone and the textbook for her second-period class as she headed out. Since she was a bit short on time, she simply went to the small supermarket by the cafeteria to buy two sweet buns and, after a moment’s thought, added two boxes of milk.
When Yu Yixian found the classroom on her schedule, more than half the seats were already taken. Some people were slumped over catching up on sleep, others were playing games—doing all sorts of things. Seeing Yu Yixian walk in, many looked at her with confusion, but assuming she might be a substitute student, no one paid her much mind.
Yu Yixian had sat in on other majors’ classes before; the back rows were the most popular, but as an auditor, it wasn’t appropriate for her to fight others for seats. The front rows were prone to being called on by teachers, so sitting in the middle was the best.
Finding a seat in the middle, she took out her phone and messaged Ling Yun:
[X: Senior, do you have a morning class today? / Kitten peeking.JPG]
[Ling Yun: Hmm.]
[X: Okay! Did you have breakfast, Senior?]
It took a while before the other side replied.
[Ling Yun: I’ll eat later.]
Yu Yixian looked at the extra bread and milk she had brought, feeling very satisfied. She had brought exactly the right thing.
She leaned back in her chair, watching the front door of the classroom expectantly. A moment later, a familiar figure walked in.
Chu Qingyu was yawning, but when she saw Yu Yixian staring intently, she was startled. Why is she here?!
“Senior Ling~ Over here~”
Chu Qingyu shut her jaw expressionlessly. Oh, she’s not looking at me.
Ling Yun, following behind Chu Qingyu, had a sullen expression. Looking closely, one could still find the lingering haze of sleepiness in her eyes.
Sure enough, even the calmest person finds it hard to maintain a pleasant expression when faced with an 8:00 AM class.
Upon hearing Yu Yixian’s voice, Ling Yun was instantly revitalized. She looked at her with mild surprise, and upon seeing her patting the seat next to her like a little kitten, her heart softened and she subconsciously wanted to walk over.
“You, be honest—how did you get so close to the little beauty?” Chu Qingyu put an arm around Ling Yun’s shoulder and whispered suspiciously.
Ling Yun glanced sideways at Chu Qingyu’s hand, and Chu Qingyu immediately pulled it back, muttering unhappily, “You really are someone who forgets her friends once she sees a pretty face.”
Ling Yun ignored her and walked over to sit down next to Yu Yixian.
Yu Yixian’s eyes curved as she raised her hand to wave. “Long time no see~”
Ling Yun sat on the outer side and placed her books on the desk. Her posture was inexplicably stiff. She coughed lightly and said in a husky voice, “Hmm.”
Yu Yixian didn’t mind Ling Yun’s lack of words. She pushed the bread and milk she had bought over to Ling Yun. “I didn’t know if you liked this brand of bread, but I just happened to bring an extra one this morning. Have a little something to pad your stomach.”
Ling Yun’s hand rested on the bread bag. Her long, slender fingers traced the plastic as she wondered what she was thinking. After a long while, she finally spoke. Under Yu Yixian’s puzzled gaze, she said with a self-deprecating tone: “You certainly are skilled at pursuing people.”
After she finished speaking, Ling Yun’s body went rigid, a flicker of annoyance passing through her eyes.
Yu Yixian was stunned at first, but then she reacted to what Ling Yun meant. She rested her chin on her hand, looking at Ling Yun with her eyes curved, her tone filled with a touch of coquettishness: “So, you knew my intentions, Senior? I’m so happy. And besides…” She reached out and tapped the bread, her fingertips brushing against Ling Yun’s fingers, “this doesn’t count as ‘pursuing.’ It was just a casual thought—I was afraid you’d be like me and go hungry because you couldn’t get up in the morning. However, does this mean you’ve agreed to let me pursue you, Senior?”
Ling Yun’s expression became complex. Even Chu Qingyu, who had heard the entire exchange from the row behind them, stared at Yu Yixian in shock.
The “little beauty” was just too good at climbing up the pole!
