My Ex-Girlfriend Has Always Been Secretly in Love with Me - Chapter 4
Yu Yixian blinked playfully while watching Ling Yun stare at her with a complex expression, reaching out with a feigned gesture to take back the bread. “Do you not like this bread? I’ll bring you something else next time.”
Ling Yun immediately pressed her hand down. “No.” After saying this, she opened the bread and took a light bite, then said slowly, “You have many classes; don’t come here next time.”
Yu Yixian rested her chin in her hands, watching Ling Yun with a beaming smile, saying neither yes nor no.
The bread was small, and since Ling Yun really hadn’t eaten anything in the morning and was quite hungry—especially with Yu Yixian by her side—Ling Yun didn’t want to keep her waiting too long, so she lowered her head and finished the bread in a few quick bites.
After finishing the bread, a flash of reluctance crossed Ling Yun’s eyes, and her fingers tightened around the bread bag.
This was the first thing Yu Yixian had given her voluntarily, something given only to her, and now it was gone just like that.
Seeing Ling Yun’s lowered head, Yu Yixian assumed she didn’t know where to throw away the bag, so she naturally took it and crumpled it into her own empty bread bag.
“I’ll go throw this away after class.”
Ling Yun nodded with difficulty, turning her head away so she wouldn’t have to look at the bread bag, fearing her thoughts might be discovered by Yu Yixian. Changing the subject, she spoke, “How did you know I had a class today?”
Hearing Ling Yun ask this, Yu Yixian thought she was unhappy, especially since she had just told her not to come again, so she quickly explained: “I asked my roommate to find out. I’m sorry, Senior; it won’t happen again!”
Oh no, she thought, had she gotten too carried away? Perhaps Ling Yun’s response to her was just out of politeness. What if she didn’t like girls? If she had known, she should have asked first! She had really been too reckless this time!
Yu Yixian patted her head, showing a look of annoyance.
Ling Yun paused when she heard the sound, turning back to meet Yu Yixian’s gaze. Seeing the disappointment in her eyes, her tone couldn’t help but soften a few degrees. “It’s fine. Ask me next time; the class schedule isn’t very accurate.”
Yu Yixian’s eyes instantly lit up, but then she hesitated. There were people all around; even though she didn’t mind, she was afraid that asking would affect Ling Yun. Forget it, she would ask after class!
“Alright, the teacher is here. You should focus on class, Senior!”
Ling Yun noticed that Yu Yixian was still feeling a bit down and wanted to ask her about it, but she heard her tell her to focus on the lecture.
Ling Yun pursed her lips slightly and nodded in hesitation. “Okay. If you’re bored, you can play on your phone.”
After giving her instructions, Ling Yun opened the book needed for the class and even pushed it toward Yu Yixian’s direction.
Yu Yixian couldn’t understand Ling Yun’s specialized course, and for some reason, the way the teacher spoke on stage seemed to have a kind of magic—it was even more sleep-inducing than her Advanced Mathematics teacher.
But she felt a bit embarrassed to play with her phone in front of her crush, so Yu Yixian simply lay on the table and observed Ling Yun intently.
She hadn’t observed Ling Yun from such a close distance before. Her eyelashes were so long; she had just noticed a tiny mole at the corner of her eye. It was just so small, and it had been hidden by her lashes before, so she hadn’t seen it until now.
Ling Yun suddenly took an eyeglass case out of her coat pocket and put on her glasses to cover the panic in her eyes, taking the opportunity to change her position. She pressed both arms against the book on the table, attempting to use them to block Yu Yixian’s intense gaze.
If Yu Yixian were to observe Ling Yun from the front, she would have discovered that her pupils were unfocused; in fact, she had been keeping track of Yu Yixian’s every move the entire time.
This was something she had never experienced before—Yu Yixian’s focused gaze.
It caused a bittersweet feeling to well up in her heart, making her crave even more.
Ling Yun covered it up well. Yu Yixian only thought she was listening attentively to the lecture and didn’t mind that her view was partially blocked. Since she couldn’t see clearly, Yu Yixian began to reminisce about the day they first met.
That day, just one cold, distant glance from Ling Yun had made her heart beat wildly, and she could still recall that feeling now.
It was a physical sensation she had never experienced before—like drowning in water, unable to breathe, and then a hand appeared before her, pulling her from the depths of the water to breathe again.
It had only been a moment, but her heartbeat, her breathing, and her gaze were all firmly held and drawn in by that hand.
It pulled her up and let her down.
So this was the feeling of love at first sight.
Yu Yixian lay on the table as quietly as a kitten. Perhaps the teacher’s lecture was too soothing, or perhaps she hadn’t rested well last night, but her eyelids gradually closed.
Ling Yun had been keeping an eye on Yu Yixian from the corner of her vision, and seeing her close her eyes and her breathing become steady, she finally confirmed that she had truly fallen asleep, a touch of helpless laughter appearing in her brows.
In fact, it wasn’t just Yu Yixian; Chu Qingyu, sitting behind them, had gone to play chess with the God of Dreams as soon as class started. Ling Yun said she was listening attentively, but in reality, she had already mastered the content being taught; usually, she used this time to catch up on sleep just like Chu Qingyu.
After all, she had been far too busy lately. She had to attend classes during the day, go to the company for an internship with Chu Qingyu after class, find time to visit her mother at the hospital, and at night, in addition to writing her thesis, she had to program small applications to earn money. She wished a single day had forty-eight hours.
She was busy until three or four in the morning every day, and her rest depended entirely on catching up during class.
Although she couldn’t catch up on sleep today, she didn’t feel the slightest bit of exhaustion; instead, she felt vibrant and joyful from the inside out.
Ling Yun followed Yu Yixian’s lead and lay on the table as well, their faces turned toward each other. She could almost feel the fragrance wafting from Yu Yixian’s breath.
It was faint and warm, like a sunflower that had fully enjoyed the embrace of the sun and grown vigorously.
It was a fragrance that only she could smell.
She had read a theory once that if you are the only one who can smell a scent radiating from a person, it proves that your body has recognized them before your soul has.
She had known for five years that her body had recognized Yu Yixian before her soul did.
Ling Yun traced Yu Yixian’s appearance with her eyes, her heart filled with complex emotions—both joyful and lost.
She had finally been seen by Yu Yixian, but Yu Yixian had not recognized her.
Ling Yun’s roving gaze landed on those closed eyes. The long lashes drooped slightly, revealing a touch of cuteness, but when those eyes opened, they were filled with vitality and brightness, as if nothing in the world could defeat her.
It was also those eyes that, when looking at her back then, held only admiration and expectation, without a hint of impurity, simply reflecting the thoughts of their owner.
And it was precisely at that moment that she had a sudden, impulsive thought, completely deviating from her goal at the time.
The bell for the end of class rang. Yu Yixian buried her head in her arms to escape.
She felt someone nudge her, and a faint, icy sensation—like snowflakes landing on the tip of one’s nose—lingered around her.
“…Wake up, class is over.”
Although Yu Yixian sat up obediently, her eyes remained closed, her head bobbing up and down.
Someone seemed to be chuckling in her ear. Yu Yixian twitched her eyelids, suddenly remembering what she had been doing before she fell asleep, and she jolted awake, startling Ling Yun who had been observing her.
Watching Ling Yun’s pupils constrict, Yu Yixian touched her face awkwardly. “Sorry, Senior, I scared you.”
Ling Yun shook her head. “It’s fine. Class is already over, and I remember you still have another class…”
Yu Yixian checked her phone, shouted “Ah!”, stood up, and startled Chu Qingyu, who hadn’t woken up yet, behind her.
“…Hm? Earthquake?” Chu Qingyu clutched her chest, looking around blankly.
“I have to go, Senior! Let’s chat when you’re free!” Yu Yixian shook her phone, clutched her books, and scrambled over Ling Yun’s legs, jogging out of the classroom.
Ling Yun sat in place, recalling the motion Yu Yixian had just made, and squeezed her eyes shut tightly.
When she opened them again, Ling Yun’s expression returned to her usual coldness. She tapped Chu Qingyu’s desk and left behind a single word: “Let’s go.”
Chu Qingyu clutched her books, yawning while following behind Ling Yun, saying listlessly, “I’m telling you, if you like the little beauty, then hurry up and agree to her. You can’t possibly not know who is number one on the Economics Department’s ‘Must-Chase’ list.”
Ling Yun frowned. “That list is still active?”
Chu Qingyu said “Mhm,” rubbing her sore neck. “I don’t know who blew it up before, but they restarted it last month.”
Ling Yun’s footsteps paused, but she didn’t continue the conversation.
That night, the Economics Department’s “Must-Chase” list blew up again.
…
Yu Yixian ran into the classroom, gasping for breath, and sat down beside Wang Xiaoyue.
Looking at Yu Yixian’s sweaty face, Wang Xiaoyue reached into her pocket, took out a tissue, and handed it to her. “Wipe your sweat, don’t catch a cold.”
Yu Yixian put down her books and leaned against Wang Xiaoyue. Seeing this, Wang Xiaoyue immediately fanned her with her hand to help her recover.
Tang Jia and Ye Qian were sitting behind them. Seeing Yu Yixian run in, Tang Jia looked confused, not knowing what Yu Yixian had been doing all morning; Ye Qian, however, knew and just shook her head helplessly.
After the classes for the day were finished, Yu Yixian and Wang Xiaoyue had no elective courses that evening, so they were free to stay in the dormitory to rest. Tang Jia and Ye Qian had taken their phones to attend their elective classes.
Wang Xiaoyue leaned toward Yu Yixian, full of gossip, curious about how things had gone today.
Yu Yixian hugged her arms and thought for a moment. “I think it was pretty good. Do you think Senior Ling likes girls?”
“How would I know that?” Wang Xiaoyue grabbed a bag of potato chips from her desk and entered gossip mode. “But I did ask around. That Senior Ling seems very cold; quite a few people have pursued her and been rejected.”
“How many is ‘quite a few’?” Yu Yixian immediately became nervous.
Wang Xiaoyue thought about it. “Probably about as many as the people who pursue you.”
Yu Yixian was confused. “Are there many people who pursue me?” She hadn’t felt it.
Wang Xiaoyue nodded vigorously. “A lot! Do you have any idea how many people have asked me for your contact information? But I never gave it out.” After all, she knew what kind of people her friends were; they weren’t worthy of her Yixian.
Yu Yixian hugged Wang Xiaoyue’s hand that was holding the chips in a touching manner. “Xiaoyue, you’re the best” and then, with lightning speed, she snatched a chip.
“Alright, hurry up and tell me, did you two have any… hehe…” Wang Xiaoyue swatted Yu Yixian’s hand away and placed the bag of chips between the two of them, looking at Yu Yixian with anticipation.
Yu Yixian gave a simple account of what happened that morning, then looked at Wang Xiaoyue. “Do you think I should find her and explain what happened that day?”
Wang Xiaoyue touched her chin, suddenly remembering something. “Didn’t you say your ex-girlfriend’s cheating partner was Senior Ling’s roommate? What is her character like? Forget it, don’t gamble on those ethereal things. I suggest you tell her. What if she tries to sabotage you? You can also use that opportunity to ask Senior Ling if she likes girls—don’t end up falling for a straight girl!”
Falling for a straight girl was simply the iron law of lesbians!
Besides, to be honest, she didn’t have a good feeling about that person surnamed Chu; she didn’t look like someone who would say good things about her Yixian.
Yu Yixian thought Wang Xiaoyue made sense. She selfishly hoped Ling Yun wasn’t straight, but just in case—she was just talking about the possibility—what if she really happened to run into that iron law?
