- Chapter 12 - “Ji Ni is too beautiful”
“You certainly have diverse interests,” Xue Qianqian smiled at the middle-parted young man before him.
Truthfully, he’d long known the identity of this contestant.
As a trainee from an entertainment company, his inclusion was inherently unfair to the ordinary competitors.
These trainees received professional training and had entire teams backing them, while the regular contestants had nothing but themselves.
Though Xue held no particular fondness for such trainees, he maintained his professionalism by earnestly evaluating their performances.
After all, if you chose him as a mentor, he would see it through to the end.
But whether they could meet his standards—that depended entirely on their abilities.
“Contestant Cai Kun, please begin your performance,” Xue Qianqian said with a smile.
“Understood, mentor.” Cai Kun took a deep breath and snapped his fingers toward the band.
A burst of static-filled music erupted—intensely rhythmic—as Cai’s body began moving to the beat.
Then came the lyrics:
“Only cause you’re too beautiful, baby
Only cause you’re too beautiful, baby
Only cause you’re just too beautiful, baby
Only cause you’re too beautiful, baby~”
The sudden vocals startled Xue Qianqian and the other music producer beside him.
“What is he even singing?” whispered Ye Yi, leaning toward Xue.
“It sounds like…” Xue frowned, hesitating to voice it.
“It sounds like… ‘Ji Ni is too beautiful’?”
“Huh? Why would anyone write lyrics like that?” Ye Yi seemed genuinely shocked.
“Let’s just keep listening.” Rubbing his throbbing temple, Xue refocused on Cai Kun’s singing and dancing.
In the waiting room, over half the contestants burst into laughter at the first line.
“Good lord— ‘Ji Ni is too beautiful’?”
“Are you sure he said ‘Ji Ni’? Not something else~?”
“These ridiculous lyrics… and that headache-inducing dance…”
Everyone was laughing—
Everyone except Chen An, who couldn’t see what was happening and could only hear the laughter and the bizarre singing around him.
Although he didn’t quite understand why the first line of the song had to be “Ji Ni is too beautiful,”
he had to admit—the rap that followed was actually pretty good.
No wonder he was a trainee. His vocal skills were already leagues ahead of most of the regular contestants on stage.
It’s just… the song itself really wasn’t very tasteful.
He sighed inwardly. Small-scale shows really attract this caliber of trainees.
In the control room, director Chen Xu massaged his temples, staring helplessly at the live feed.
What is this trainee thinking?
How are we supposed to broadcast lyrics like this?
The entire production team bit back laughter as they watched Cai Kun’s exaggerated shoulder rolls—until a basketball suddenly rolled onto stage.
When Cai incorporated it into his routine, they completely lost it.
This is painful. Physically painful to watch.
Back in the waiting room, contestants were wheezing with laughter. Even onstage, Xue Qianqian clutched the mic with one hand while covering his mouth with the other—his contorted face betraying the effort to stay composed.
Ye Yi similarly pinched her thigh, mentally replaying every tragic moment of her life to suppress giggles during those torturous seconds.
Oblivious, Cai Kun kept performing with infectious enthusiasm until the song ended. Drenched in sweat but beaming, he bowed to Xue Qianqian.
“Mentor, my performance is complete.”
“Haha~ cough, good, not bad.” As soon as he released his grip, Xue Qianqian nearly burst out laughing, quickly covering it with a light cough before saying, “That was quite a performance. I can tell you genuinely enjoy singing, dancing, rapping, and basketball.”
“Yes, mentor,” Cai Kun replied.
“Mmm~ I’ll give you my vote…” Before he could finish, Ye Yi beside him gently tugged at his sleeve.
Xue Qianqian gave her a puzzled look.
She then whispered something in his ear.
Cai Kun watched this unfold, his nervousness undeniable.
After two and a half years as a trainee, this competition was his shot at debut.
If he got eliminated in the preliminaries, his company would likely drop him immediately.
“Ahem, alright, Cai Kun. Your performance was impressive, so I’ll give you—” Xue Qianqian’s solemn expression made Cai Kun’s heart clench.
“—a pass.”
For a moment, Cai Kun froze, then his face lit up with excitement.
“What the hell? He actually passed?”
“There’s gotta be foul play here. No way.”
“That can’t be right. Teacher Xue is supposed to be the fairest judge.”
In the waiting room, everyone stared at the screen showing Cai Kun’s jubilation, confusion written on their faces.
Only Chen An remained calm.
He’d listened carefully to the entire song—aside from the slightly bizarre opening, the rap section was actually quite good.
Cai Kun did have some talent after all.
So his passing wasn’t entirely unexpected.
After Cai Kun’s turn, more numbers were called as contestants left the waiting room one by one, like soldiers heading to battle.
Soon, the room grew quiet.
Last up: Chen An, Peerless Beauty track.
“Finally,” Chen An exhaled, surprised to be the last contestant.
“Far left, Peerless Beauty track,” he muttered, standing up with his guitar and heading left.
His white cane tapped ahead, but it bumped into a table in the room.
“Ouch, my foot!” Chen An grimaced in pain as his big toe made intimate contact with the table leg.
Fortunately, his canvas shoes provided some protection. After rubbing his toe, he stood up again.
But…
“Which way was left again?”
He froze. The collision had disoriented him completely.
Maybe… this way?
Hesitating briefly, he steeled himself and moved forward until he found an entrance.
“This must be it,” Chen An sighed in relief, even mentally patting himself on the back for figuring it out as he stepped through.
Meanwhile, at the Peerless Beauty track judging panel, Yang Dami turned to her co-judge. “Are we still missing one contestant?”
Zhang Xiaoda nodded. “Yeah, the director said it’s some blind guy.”
“A blind person?” Yang Dami paused, about to say something but stopped when she noticed the cameras. “How many passes do we have left?”
Zhang Xiaoda checked their list of approved contestants and smirked. “We’re already full. No chance for this blind dude.”
His expression dripped with disdain; his laugh laced with mockery.
Next door at the Unique Brilliance category, Xue Qianqian sighed, counting on his fingers. “We’ve only filled fourteen spots so far, right?”
Ye Yi checked their list and nodded in confirmation.
Xue Qianqian was feeling rather frustrated. Even after lowering his standards, he was still one short.
But just then, the sound of a cane tapping against the ground and footsteps suddenly approached, followed by a tentative voice asking, “Am I here yet?”
