- Chapter 13 - Hmm, Wrong Track?
“Hmm? Wasn’t it already over?”
Xue Qianqian looked puzzled at Ye Yi beside him.
Similarly, Ye Yi wore a completely bewildered expression as she checked the contestant list in her hand—the previous performer was indeed the last one.
So what was this about?
In the director’s booth, Chen Xu was stunned when he saw Chen An appearing on the “Unique Brilliance” competition stage. He turned to Li Jing beside him and asked, “Didn’t he choose the ‘Peerless Beauty’ track?”
“That’s right.” Li Jing frowned at Chen An on the screen. “Could he have taken a wrong turn?”
Hearing this, everyone immediately understood.
That was indeed possible—it would be easy to make such a mistake without being able to see.
“So what do we do now? Should we redirect him?” Li Jing asked the director.
“Well…” Chen Xu hesitated before asking another staff member, “Does Mentor Yang Dami still have any passes left?”
“No, only Mentor Xue Qianqian has one pass remaining now.”
Hearing this, Chen Xu looked back at Chen An on the screen. “No need. If it’s a mistake, let it be. Even if we redirect him to the Peerless Beauty track, he wouldn’t advance.”
“Then I’ll notify both teachers.” Li Jing nodded and picked up the communicator to relay the message.
On the Unique Brilliance stage, Xue Qianqian and Ye Yi exchanged confused looks. After a moment’s hesitation, Xue asked, “Are you also a contestant here?”
Hearing this, Chen An couldn’t help but think to himself:
How unprofessional is this show? Don’t they know whether I’m a contestant or not?
Better get eliminated quickly so I can go back to recording songs.
He nodded and replied, “Yes, mentor.”
Xue Qianqian thought to himself, “Maybe the production team knew I was one contestant short and specially arranged this.”
But why is this contestant blind?
Seeing Chen An standing there with his white cane, Xue Qianqian felt a headache coming on. His track was supposed to have the highest quality standards—why was he getting all these unconventional contestants?
“May I ask your name?” Xue Qianqian inquired.
He had no information about this contestant whatsoever—regarding Chen An, he was completely in the dark.
“Hello mentor, I’m Chen An from Imperial University,” Chen An replied.
“A student.” Xue Qianqian nodded and gestured for staff to bring a chair.
Only after Chen An was seated did Xue Qianqian properly observe him. The young man carried a guitar on his back—could he actually see?
Still puzzled, Xue said, “Chen An, what’s the name of the original song you’re performing today?”
“Someone Like Me.”
“That title…” Xue Qianqian’s last bit of prejudice melted away. So what if he was blind? Did that mean he couldn’t make music?
“Alright then, someone like me, please begin your performance,” Xue Qianqian said seriously.
Chen An nodded and smoothly took the guitar from his back. To Xue Qianqian and Ye Yi’s surprise, he actually closed his eyes—though it probably made no difference either way.
As his left hand formed chords and his right hand plucked the strings, the division of labor between them somehow produced the most moving sounds.
“This intro…?”
Xue Qianqian immediately straightened in his seat, all other thoughts vanishing from his mind.
Just this level of proficiency with the guitar alone was enough to show how much effort Chen An must have put in to achieve such skill despite his blindness.
Such perseverance alone demanded my utmost respect.
The venue fell completely silent. The production team was equally quiet, and even Li Jing, who had just finished sending a message, looked up at Chen An playing on the screen.
After a brief guitar intro, Chen An leaned toward the microphone and began singing in a husky voice:
“Someone as outstanding as me
Should have lived a brilliant life
So how, after twenty-odd years,
Am I still drifting in the sea of people~”
These four lines captured the universal human lament of resisting mediocrity.
Xue Qianqian’s heart trembled, and his expression grew even more attentive.
“Someone as clever as me
Long bid farewell to innocence
So why did I still trade a love
For a body full of scars...”
Yes, clever people always think they’ve outgrown naivety. Yet who would have guessed that when giving their heart to love, they often become the most naive of all?
Just as the lyrics said—having shed what they thought was innocence, only to find themselves scarred after a relationship.
“Someone as lost as me
Someone searching like me
Someone as ordinary as me
How many more have you seen?”
As the first verse ended, Chen An’s vocal mastery and guitar skills—worthy of a champion—left everyone with reddened eyes.
A whistle interlude sounded, as if sighing over a lifetime of experiences.
Xue Qianqian sat stunned, watching Chen An while his mind replayed his own struggles—decades of obscurity before his talent finally brought him success, making him a top artist in the entertainment industry.
These lyrics felt like his own biography: the youthful arrogance, the humbling failures, and the unexpected fame that came only after years of quiet perseverance.
These words… they were written so well.
“Someone as common as me
Never cared for pretense
So why do old songs sometimes
Suddenly leave me dazed?
Someone as timid as me
Always holding something back
So why did I once throw caution to the wind
For someone’s sake…”
His voice carried stories, quietly narrating the secret chapters of the human heart.
How many people in this world resent their ordinariness yet remain ordinary despite yearning for poetry and distant horizons?
What does resisting fate matter when you ultimately must submit to it?
You’re just that kind of person—unnoticed, uncared for, the protagonist of your own solitary world, performing without audience or applause.
As the guitar swelled, Chen An’s voice, after recounting a lifetime of defiance, ended with a final self-questioning:
“Someone as lonely as me
Someone as foolish as me
Someone resisting mediocrity like me
How many are there in this world?
Someone as inexplicable as me
Will anyone ever care?”
When the song ended, Xue Qianqian frowned deeply, completely immersed. Only one thought remained:
This couldn’t have been written by someone untouched by life’s storms.
Perhaps… whatever took his sight was what inspired this.
Against his will, he felt a pang of sympathy for this seemingly young man before him.
Who would have thought—in the end, the production team had delivered me a true surprise.
“Qianqian, Qianqian.” Though equally moved, Ye Yi beside him had checked her communicator and now wore a complicated expression, somewhat reluctant to interrupt the visibly excited Xue Qianqian.
“What’s wrong?” Xue Qianqian still had a smile on his face.
Ye Yi hesitated, then leaned in to whisper in his ear.
Meanwhile, Chen An finally heard the melodious mechanical voice he had been longing for.
