- Chapter 11 - Singing, Dancing, Rapping, and Playing Basketball
“Hurry up, get the cameras ready!”
“Where’s the microphone? Where the hell did the mic go?”
“Damn it, where’s the band teacher? Taking a shit? Hand him his instrument and make him play in the toilet…”
On-site, preparations were proceeding in an orderly manner.
With the director’s cue, the cameras rolled, and the competition officially began.
All three tracks were now open simultaneously.
The mentor for the “Peerless Beauty” track: Yang Dami, also known as “Big Mimi”—a nickname that, well, those who know, know.
After blowing a kiss to the camera, Yang Dami swayed her way to her seat.
The mentor for the “Unique Brilliance” track: Xue Qianqian, a perfect blend of humor and wit. He waved at the camera before taking his seat.
As for the “Supreme Voice” track mentor, Hua Chengyu, he had already sat down before the camera even focused on him. Even when the lens turned his way, his face remained stern, as if someone owed him money.
With all three tracks open, the called contestants would enter their respective tracks one by one.
Meanwhile, the waiting room had three large screens broadcasting the live footage.
“Contestant No. 1, Du Lei, Unique Brilliance track.”
…
A cute mechanical voice echoed through the room’s speakers.
However, no one noticed the tiny red dot on the speaker, resembling an eye, silently observing everyone in the room.
This was the production team’s little trick—a hidden camera meant to capture the contestants’ most unfiltered reactions for later broadcast.
“Damn, Brother Du actually made it through!”
“Brother Ma too—he got the Supreme Voice pass card!”
As time passed, cheers of envy erupted in the room for those who advanced, while those who failed muttered a few words before falling silent.
Chen An sat alone in the corner, idly keeping track of the number of contestants who passed in each track.
Several hours later, most of the contestants had already performed.
The Supreme Voice track had ten passers so far.
Peerless Beauty had eleven.
Unique Brilliance was struggling, with only eight.
Perhaps the mentor was too strict, or maybe originality was just that hard.
Bored out of his mind, Chen An wondered why his turn hadn’t come yet. He just wanted to get eliminated quickly so he could go back to recording his song.
The thought of selling a single song for 800,000 yuan made him grin like an idiot.
Little did he know, just as he was smiling, another contestant had just failed to advance in the Unique Brilliance track.
His name was Cai Xu, a trainee from Beihai Entertainment with two and a half years of practice under his belt.
Accompanying him was his older brother, Cai Kun, who was still in the waiting room. The moment he saw his brother get eliminated, his expression darkened.
Already in a foul mood, his peripheral vision caught someone in the corner still grinning.
He turned and realized it was that blind guy.
Originally, Cai Kun hadn’t planned to bother with him, but now he couldn’t hold back.
Laughing? What’s so funny? Did his brother’s elimination amuse him that much?
“You think this is funny?” Cai Kun strode over to Chen An in two or three steps, his voice low, clearly suppressing his anger.
The remaining contestants, yet to perform, perked up at the scene, eagerly watching the drama unfold.
While Chen An was still lost in his fantasy about the 800,000 yuan, he sensed someone standing in front of him speaking.
He asked in confusion, “Are you talking to me?”
“Just because you’re blind doesn’t mean you’re deaf, right?” Cai Kun’s tone dripped with sarcasm.
“A blind guy coming on a show—can’t even see. Are you planning to play the sympathy card and then cash in as a streamer after the episode airs?” Cai Kun sneered at Chen An. “I’ve seen plenty of schemes like yours.”
In just a few sentences, he had completely belittled Chen An, as if that was all he amounted to in his eyes.
Chen An frowned. Who the hell was this guy? He hadn’t even said a word—what had he done to deserve this?
Was he being targeted just because he was blind?
Fine. If that’s how it was, he wouldn’t hold back either.
“You’re a trainee, right?”
“That’s right. I’m Cai Kun, a trainee at Beihai Entertainment. Remember my name, kid—I’m going to be a huge star. Piss me off, and I’ll make sure you can’t survive in the entertainment industry, let alone the internet.” Cai Kun looked down at him with a cold smirk.
“Two and a half years of training, can play basketball and cook?” For some reason, Chen An blurted this out instinctively.
“What the—? That rhymes. You into rap or something?” Some of the other contestants muttered.
Meanwhile, Cai Kun’s eyes burned with anger, as if he’d just been mocked.
How did this guy know he’d been a trainee for two and a half years? And basketball really was his hobby.
As for cooking—that was something others did for him.
He was going to be a superstar. There was no way he’d ever step into a kitchen.
“You’ve really done it now, kid.” Just as Cai Kun was about to say more, the speakers called his name.
“Just wait. I’ll deal with you later.”
After tossing out that threat, Cai Kun adjusted his appearance, flashed what he thought was a charming smile, and strode toward the “Unique Brilliance” stage.
“Damn, dude, you’ve got guts.” Once Cai Kun was gone, one of the contestants scooted over to Chen An and gave him a thumbs-up.
“You actually dared to mess with Cai Kun? What’s your deal?” The contestant studied him curiously.
Instead of answering, Chen An asked, “Is Cai Kun really that big of a deal?”
“Of course!” The contestant leaned in and whispered, “He’s a Beihai Entertainment trainee. Anyone who lasts two and a half years there has real skills.”
Chen An nodded thoughtfully.
So this little show had some pull after all—they could even get entertainment company trainees.
Though if someone like Cai Kun could make it, Beihai Entertainment couldn’t be all that impressive.
In his mind, he’d already downgraded Beihai to a third-rate agency.
Just then, Cai Kun appeared on the “Unique Brilliance” stage, broadcast on the overhead screen.
His voice rang out, instantly grabbing everyone’s attention—even Chen An perked up.
After introducing himself, Cai Kun added, “Mentor Xue Qianqian, I know you like playing basketball. Maybe we can have a match sometime.”
Xue Qianqian’s interest was piqued. Smiling, he replied, “You’ll have to go easy on me—I’m terrible at it.”
“Ha, mentor Xue, you’re too modest. Basketball is just a hobby of mine—I’m certainly no match for you,” Cai Kun said with a humble expression.
Xue Qianqian continued, “Do you have any other hobbies then?”
“Indeed, mentor,” Cai Kun replied with a confident smile. “I have many hobbies, but if I had to pick my favorites, there are only four.”
“Oh? And what are those four?” Xue Qianqian asked with a chuckle.
“Singing, dancing, rapping, and playing basketball.”
