- Chapter 11 - Wife, Serious Business
Beneath the concealment of the bathrobe, Gu Fei could still see the skin close at hand with absolute clarity, feeling every nuance of the rose.
With the tip of her tongue lightly pressing, she closed her eyes, her face flushing as her nose dipped deep into the sensation.
She continued until her ear was pinched, and Pei Yao’s puzzled voice drifted down from above.
“Gu Fei.”
“Mm?” Gu Fei, still intoxicated by the moment, responded with a muffled, delayed hum.
“Is the other one my phone?”
“Mm, yes.” Gu Fei parted her lips and nudged her head against Pei Yao’s embrace with her eyes closed. Taking into account that “Qin Qingwei” was in a new identity, she proactively added an explanation. “Wife, your old phone was lost. This is a new one I bought today.”
“I see…”
Looking at this new phone, where the chat history and photo gallery were both clean, Pei Yao’s expression held a trace of doubt. If this new phone was hers, then the one that couldn’t be opened earlier should be Gu Fei’s.
Raising an eyebrow as a realization struck her, Pei Yao looked down at Gu Fei, who seemed to have developed an “addiction” to the current activity. She gripped Gu Fei’s ear and slowly gave it a twist.
“Ah!”
Gu Fei, being disciplined once again, opened her eyes with a look of confusion and grievance. She was becoming increasingly certain that this new identity of Qin Qingwei’s was likely the one most prone to using “physical force” against her. She used “violence” over the slightest disagreement.
Pitifully forced out of her embrace, Gu Fei sat up straight while clutching her ear, looking at Pei Yao with accusing eyes. “Wife, what did I do wrong this time?”
Pei Yao glanced at her, unmoved by Gu Fei’s pathetic display. She simply tossed the phone with the uncracked password in front of her.
“I tried it. It won’t open with my birthday.” With that, she crossed her arms and let out a soft laugh. “Did President Gu remember wrongly, perhaps mistaking another girlfriend’s birthday for mine?”
The smile on Pei Yao’s face was exceptionally gentle as she spoke, but the threat in her eyes was incredibly heavy, causing Gu Fei to daze out for a moment while staring at her.
She even found herself mentally categorizing the differences between Qin Qingwei’s various personas. For instance, the same gentle smile could carry entirely different meanings. Qin Qingwei’s gentleness was genuine; Gu Yi’s gentleness carried a sense of seduction; Teacher Song was gentle yet distant. As for this new identity whose name she didn’t yet know…
Gu Fei silently rubbed her ear with lingering fear, her voice becoming involuntarily cautious as she explained. “There are no other girlfriends. It really is your birthday.”
She picked up her phone and accurately unlocked the screen using Qin Qingwei’s birthday: 1026.
Pei Yao, having witnessed the entire process, stared directly at her, not even bothering to maintain her smile anymore.
“My birthday is February 9th—the same month and day as yours. Is it that hard to remember? President Gu, do I need to remind you again?”
“…”
The coldness on her face was almost tangible, causing the retort “0209 is my birthday” to be swallowed back down.
Suddenly, Gu Fei realized that Qin Qingwei’s different identities actually had different birthdays.
She had been careless.
Biting her lip in a mix of frustration and alertness, Gu Fei watched as Pei Yao began coldly tying her belt, preparing to get out of bed. In a panic, Gu Fei scrambled for an explanation.
“1026 is actually… it’s my mother’s birthday.”
While mentally apologizing to the Qin Qingwei who had been “promoted” to mother and the Ms. Gu who had been forced to change her birthday, Gu Fei lowered her head and grabbed Pei Yao’s wrist, spinning a low-voiced lie.
“Because I missed my mother especially much a while ago, I changed the password… I’m sorry, I remembered incorrectly.”
Knowing she was telling a ridiculous lie, Gu Fei nearly buried her head in her chest. She didn’t even know how she managed to say those words. But in such a critical moment, she couldn’t stand by and watch Qin Qingwei truly misunderstand her.
A birthday used as a password must belong to someone very important. To Gu Fei, the important people were naturally Qin Qingwei, the elder Ms. Gu who passed away over a decade ago, and Gu Lian. But she couldn’t very well lie using Gu Lian’s name; what if her wife actually decided to confront her on a whim? Gu Lian definitely wouldn’t help her lie.
It was better to go all in with the first option.
Feeling like an unfilial daughter, Gu Fei covered her face and apologized to her mother in her heart once more.
“…Fine, I wrongly accused you.” Pei Yao, thinking she was crying, bit her lip with a hint of guilt and reached out to pat Gu Fei’s head comfortingly.
“I really haven’t been promiscuous, but you keep doubting me.” Taking advantage of Pei Yao’s soft heart, Gu Fei quickly cleared up the rumors.
Pei Yao looked down at her hesitantly, her gaze falling on the faint tooth mark left on her chest. Her voice became slow and heavy.
“That’s because… I’m very insecure. Ever since my company went bankrupt, I’ve been kept by you… like a canary.”
Gu Fei, who was currently “crying” against her belly, blinked and listened intently, her brain working at high speed. So the background for the new identity is like this.
“Even though you got engaged to me and gave me a legitimate status, I have nothing now… only you.”
After a heartfelt confession and self-analysis, Pei Yao cupped Gu Fei’s face. Her elegant eyes had turned red, and there was a faint shimmer of moisture at the corners. “I won’t be like this again. Don’t be mad at me, okay?”
“Okay.” Gu Fei, still processing the new back story, nodded sincerely and gave Pei Yao a big, warm hug. In reality, her heart was crying with pity. She had no idea what Qin Qingwei had been through to construct such a pitiable new identity for herself.
Before today, Gu Fei always thought fantasies were beautiful. But her wife’s actual condition told her otherwise.
When they lay back in bed, perhaps because she had shared her true feelings, Pei Yao felt a bit embarrassed and intentionally turned her back to Gu Fei. Gu Fei, processing the transitions between the identities, stared dizzily at her back.
Eventually, Pei Yao, having waited for a long time without receiving any initiative, lost her patience.
“Gu Fei, aren’t you going to hold me while we sleep?”
“I am.” Gu Fei snapped back to reality and hugged her from behind. As soon as their bodies touched, Pei Yao proactively backed into her embrace.
“Are you still tired?”
The honest Gu Fei instinctively shook her head.
In the darkness, Pei Yao curved her lips in a silent smile. She reached down and took Gu Fei’s hand, placing it in her own embrace. “With you with me, I should sleep very well tonight.”
“Goodnight, wife. Sweet dreams.” Gu Fei pressed a light kiss to the nape of her neck. Having grown accustomed to the feeling, she instinctively gave her a gentle massage with her palm.
This elicited a soft laugh from Pei Yao.
“It seems that except for doing ‘serious business,’ you aren’t tired any other time, right?”
“…” Gu Fei, understanding the hint, buried her face in her back and feigned sleep with a red face.
As the first light of dawn appeared, Gu Fei was still tossing and turning. She replayed Qin Qingwei’s states over the last few days in her mind, her palm tightly interlaced with her wife’s beneath the covers.
Because of the lie she told last night, Pei Yao hadn’t insisted on checking her phone further and fell asleep shortly after cuddling with her. But as Gu Fei watched her sleeping face, she realized something after the fact.
For “Pei Yao,” her birthday was the same as Gu Fei’s. But for “Song Yanran,” it likely wasn’t. And the password for that new phone was set by Song Yanran using Gu Fei’s birthday.
Her heart felt incredibly soft. Gu Fei bit her lip, her eyes turning red as she nuzzled into the crook of Qin Qingwei’s neck with deep attachment.
The next morning, Pei Yao was the first to wake. Ever since her company went bankrupt, she had struggled with sleep and memory. Sleeping with Gu Fei last night was the best night’s rest she’d had recently.
She turned her head slightly and looked at Gu Fei, who was still fast asleep on her shoulder, instinctively reaching out to rub her thumb against the corner of her mouth.
While Gu Fei was still sleeping, Pei Yao quietly picked up the phone from the bedside. Before sleeping last night, she had intentionally placed both phones on her side to make it easier to check this morning.
She did trust Gu Fei, but that didn’t stop her from checking Gu Fei’s phone.
Skillfully entering the photo gallery, Pei Yao checked everything patiently. Confirming there were no intimate photos, she moved to WeChat. Upon entering, she saw a chat box pinned to the top labeled “Wife.”
She stared at it for a while, then picked up her own phone for comparison. Clearly, the “Wife” in Gu Fei’s phone wasn’t her. But yesterday, Gu Fei said her old phone was lost, so this… should be her original account.
To verify, Pei Yao tapped a voice message and played it softly. According to her assessment, it was indeed her own voice.
Her lips curved into a smile. In a good mood, she put both phones back. She intended to go downstairs and make a “love breakfast” for Gu Fei, but before she could get up, she was grabbed by the person beside her.
“Wife…” It was Gu Fei’s unconscious murmur in her sleep.
Pei Yao stopped her movement to get out of bed. When she turned around, she realized Gu Fei was covered in a layer of fine sweat, and her brow was tightly furrowed.
“Gu Fei…” Pei Yao whispered, worriedly wiping the sweat from her forehead. Fearing she was caught in a nightmare, Pei Yao gently shook her shoulder to wake her.
When Gu Fei opened her eyes dazed, she was met with Pei Yao’s gentle, smiling face. “Did you have a nightmare?”
Gu Fei instinctively nodded then shook her head. She felt it wasn’t a nightmare, though the sight of Qin Qingwei constantly changing identities in the dream did make her feel sad.
Pei Yao smiled and tapped her nose, teasing her to lighten the mood. “You were calling for your wife in your dream. I thought a dream about me must be a sweet one, but I guess it wasn’t…”
Gu Fei instinctively grabbed her fingertips and pressed her hand against her chest. “It was a sweet dream.”
No matter what the illness was, she would stay by her wife’s side and cure her.
“Silly…” Surprised by her sudden solemn attitude, Pei Yao recovered and pressed a kiss to her cheek. After a thought, she gave up the idea of getting up and lay back down beside Gu Fei.
Beneath the light quilt, she reached up and casually pulled the collar of her nightgown open, the smooth fabric sliding off her shoulder. Facing Gu Fei’s blushing and soft expression, Pei Yao brought her into her arms.
In the next moment, Gu Fei heard her gentle voice right by her ear.
“I heard that nursing can soothe one’s mood. Do you want to try?”
