Love Notebook of a Reclusive Beautiful Boy - Chapter 16
Chapter 16
At seven o’clock in the morning, the Du residence was very quiet.
Du Yu had taken a day off yesterday, so he bound to go to school today.
After eating breakfast, Nanny Fang was packing Du Yu’s bag—a backpack with a very large capacity. While putting the backpack on him, she said to Jiang Sheng beside her, “I heard the Master say last night that Mr. Jiang will accompany A-Yu to classes from now on. I feel so much more at ease.”
Jiang Sheng was talking to Old Ma by the table. Hearing this, he didn’t say much in response, only asking, “Is everything ready?”
Du Yu was wearing his school uniform today. St. Paul’s universally adopted a European-style uniform: a white shirt inside with a grey plaid bowtie, paired with a black suit jacket on the outside, and grey suit trousers below.
Although the colors were simple, the exterior design carried a strong British style, and the school badge of St. Paul’s was on the chest.
The uniform had just been delivered yesterday, and the lines of the ironed suit were still brand new. Although Du Yu’s height was not as tall as Jiang Sheng’s, it was considered above average among his peers. His tall, thin figure wearing the suit, combined with his fair skin, instantly made his temperament appear clean and elegant.
Nanny Fang straightened his clothes for him and said with some emotion, “Our A-Yu has truly grown up. Dressing like this makes me almost unable to recognize him.”
Jiang Sheng took a glance; Du Yu dressing like this was indeed quite a striking sight.
He smiled. “This clothing suits him well.”
Nanny Fang was also full of smiles. “Exactly, our A-Yu’s facial features are beyond reproach.”
Seeing that everything was about ready, Jiang Sheng had Old Ma go start the car.
“Alright, A-Yu, we have to go to school.”
Nanny Fang picked up the photo frame to show Du Yu, and stuffed it into the bag while speaking, “A-Yu, I’ve put the photo in your bag. Look at it when you get to school.”
After saying that, she still said to Jiang Sheng with worry, “I’ll trouble Mr. Jiang. This photo absolutely cannot be allowed to be smashed to pieces again.”
After Jiang Sheng told Nanny Fang to rest assured, he took Du Yu and prepared to leave.
Just after leading him a few steps, before even walking out the door, Du Yu suddenly tugged at his sleeve. His large eyes looked at him, and he said softly, “Flying… bird…”
Jiang Sheng froze for a moment. “Flying bird?”
Nanny Fang walked a couple of steps over. “What’s wrong? Was something left behind?”
Jiang Sheng didn’t understand Du Yu’s meaning. He knew Du Yu still didn’t comprehend many things very well and often spoke in fragmented words. Some he could understand, but this “flying bird” he truly didn’t comprehend.
Could it be yesterday’s butterfly?
But Du Yu knew how to say “butterfly.”
Jiang Sheng turned his head toward Nanny Fang and asked, “Flying bird—what is that?”
“Flying bird?”
“Mm, Du Yu said it. What could it possibly be?”
Nanny Fang didn’t quite understand either. She thought about it and said, “There is a parrot in the back garden, is he talking about that? But I’ve never seen A-Yu go over there.”
“Bring it over to let him see,” Jiang Sheng said.
Nanny Fang immediately called a servant to hurry to the back garden and bring that green parrot over.
That servant was very fast, running and panting back with the cage a few minutes later.
Jiang Sheng asked softly, “Is it this one, A-Yu?”
Du Yu’s brows knitted slightly, and he shook his head.
Nanny Fang was a bit anxious. “There are no other birds in this house.”
Jiang Sheng lowered his head slightly, his tone gentle, trying to get A-Yu to think carefully. “What kind of flying bird is it? A-Yu, speak a bit more clearly.”
Du Yu glanced at Jiang Sheng, a thoughtful look in his eyes. Soon, his eyes lit up for an instant, and then his fresh-toned humming voice could be heard.
It was obvious that he really liked that pocket watch. The moment he hummed this song, he became somewhat cheerful. While humming, his head even nodded along with the rhythm of the beat; the movement was very small, but the pleasure in his voice could not be concealed.
Jiang Sheng understood instantly.
Letting out a laugh, he said, “Alright, I know.”
After saying that, he spoke to Nanny Fang, “Find someone to go up to the attic and bring down that pocket watch on the table.”
Nanny Fang hurriedly called a Filipino maid over.
In a short while, the pocket watch was brought down.
“This is the flying bird A-Yu was talking about?”
Nanny Fang truly couldn’t fathom what relation this pocket watch had to that flying bird. In her heart, she could only silently sigh that it was indeed better for Du Yu to study more.
Jiang Sheng took it over. Only when he saw the golden flying bird on the watch cover did he understand.
He smiled, pinching the pocket watch chain. “Is it this one?”
Du Yu’s eyes and brows curved into a smile as he nodded, and then he took it from Jiang Sheng’s hand.
That flying bird was carved to look lifelike. Du Yu lowered his head to touch it, and then carefully tried to hang it around his neck.
Jiang Sheng caught his wrist. “It’s not worn like that, A-Yu.”
Du Yu raised his eyes slightly, his innocent and youthful gaze looking at him.
“Give it to me.”
Du Yu glanced at Jiang Sheng’s open palm and obediently placed the pocket watch upon it.
Jiang Sheng lowered his head to thread the clip on the chain into the button of the suit jacket to secure it, and then placed the pocket watch into the chest pocket.
“Wear it like this, understand?”
Du Yu didn’t respond to him, bowing his head to stare at the pocket watch inside the pocket.
Helpless, Jiang Sheng didn’t explain much more either, and took him back to school.
…
Class hadn’t started yet, and the classroom was somewhat rowdy.
As Jiang Sheng led Du Yu past the window, he was spotted by someone with sharp eyes. They made signals with their eyes toward Zhao Youqi, who was sitting in the front row, to alert him.
Zhao Youqi turned his gaze and saw Jiang Sheng and Du Yu walk in.
He was currently harboring a breath of stifled rage in his heart, and said in a bizarre, mocking tone, “Officer, there are regulations in the school. Non-students are not allowed to enter the classroom.”
Jiang Sheng ignored him, leading Du Yu with the intention of returning to their original seats. As a result, Zhao Youqi stood up and reached out an arm to block them. “It was already explained to you very clearly. Do you really take this place for a police station, coming as you please and leaving as you please?”
“Get out of the way.”
Jiang Sheng’s voice was cold and indifferent.
In terms of age, he was six or seven years older than these people. To be honest, he really didn’t want to lower himself to their level.
“I precisely won’t!” Zhao Youqi’s voice was a bit loud. “I’m telling you, I asked my dad last night, and he told me that you retired from the police force long ago! Still wanting to drag me to the police station? My dad will be the first one not to let you off!”
Jiang Sheng couldn’t be bothered to pay attention to him. Holding Du Yu’s hand, he glanced at Zhao Youqi and said, “Get out of the way.”
Zhao Youqi had been used to being flattered since childhood. That day, Jiang Sheng treating him that way in front of so many people made him lose a lot of face.
He originally thought Jiang Sheng was a Jinguang police officer and intended to swallow his anger, but when his father told him last night that this person had retired from the police force long ago, he instantly flared up with raging fury.
This dead weakling actually dared to deceive him!
“I just won’t get out of the way, so what? Want to hit me? I’ll have my dad find people to play you to death.”
After clamoring in this manner, Zhao Youqi felt that he had at least retrieved some of his face, and smiled somewhat triumphantly.
Du Yu turned his head somewhat blankly to look at Jiang Sheng, his clear gaze completely full of bewilderment.
He probably didn’t understand what they were doing.
Jiang Sheng squeezed his hand, giving him a reassuring smile. “It’s nothing.”
Turning his head back, the gentle smile that had just been on his face vanished instantly. His mouth was firmly set, and his expression looked very fierce and sharp.
He reached out his hand, pinching Zhao Youqi’s wrist with a force so great it felt as though it would crush Zhao Youqi’s hand bones to pieces.
His voice was indifferent and cold: “Regarding the matter last time, I considered you young and didn’t hold it against you. But I will make one point clear to you—it doesn’t matter if you provoke me, but if you dare to touch him…”
Jiang Sheng’s gaze lightly flicked over to Du Yu on the side. “You might as well not want this hand.”
Zhao Youqi was in so much pain that he couldn’t speak. His face looked agonized, pulling back his arm as he cried out with a gasping voice, “Quickly, quick, re—release your hand…”
With a light flick, Jiang Sheng retracted his hand.
He had purposely squeezed very heavily this time. It wasn’t that he wanted to teach him some lesson, but simply wanted to warn him, so that these people wouldn’t come to find trouble with Du Yu over nothing.
Zhao Youqi’s hand hurt terribly, and tears were even forming from the pain.
How could he have known that this person’s strength was so immense? He only left behind the line: “You just wait and see!”
After this line—which couldn’t be more cliché—he was crowded by several classmates and went to the infirmary.
He had failed to steal the chicken and instead lost the rice, leaving the classroom in an exceptionally wretched state.
The people in the class hadn’t expected the situation to reverse completely, and their jaws dropped one after another in surprise.
Jiang Sheng paid no attention to the gazes of those people. He pulled out the chair, taking off Du Yu’s bag while saying, “A-Yu, you sit on the inside.”
Understanding his meaning, Du Yu sat inside.
Jiang Sheng sat down beside him.
Except for feeling a bit strange, there was nothing else to it. After all, he hadn’t sat inside a classroom for many years. Sitting together now with a group of people six or seven years younger than himself, the feeling was still quite awkward.
Fortunately, however, Jiang Sheng would automatically ignore this kind of awkwardness.
Placed on the desk was the national literature textbook—it was still the same edition that Jiang Sheng had studied in the past. Jiang Sheng flipped through a couple of pages and found that the contents inside had basically undergone no changes.
Continuing to flip through a few more pages, he felt it was rather boring, so he placed it on the desk and flicked his eyes over to Du Yu beside him.
He currently had his head lowered, looking toward the floor, his head almost sticking inside the desk drawer. Jiang Sheng thought he was listening to the pocket watch again, and patted his shoulder with some helplessness. “Alright, A-Yu, class is about to start, don’t play anymore.”
Hearing this, Du Yu raised his head.
His brows were slightly arched, a trace of mystery flashing through his gaze, and the joy in his voice could not be concealed. “A-Sheng, look…”
Amused, Jiang Sheng asked, “Look at what?”
Du Yu extended his hands over, his two hands clasped together, looking as if there was something inside.
“Look…”
He said it once more.
Then, quietly and very slowly, he opened one hand. Lying inside was a paper butterfly.
