- Chapter 76 - The Mermaid and the Lucky Pearl
Long Ling and Annie boarded the cruise ship together. After entering, there were only the three of them.
Violet sat in the cabin and arranged for the ship’s chef to prepare some food.
Long Ling and she had been swimming in the sea for so long, they must be hungry.
It would take some time for the ship to sail from here to the Mysterious Island, enough time for them to adjust their state and replenish their energy.
“Let’s eat together.”
Violet elegantly crossed her legs and sat beside Long Ling.
Annie sat opposite, feeling a sense of oppression. Eating at the same table as a dragon like Violet created a lot of psychological pressure.
Annie wasn’t that resilient and waved her hand: “I’m full from drinking coconut water. Sister Long Ling, you eat. I’ll go to the bow for some fresh air.”
Long Ling nodded slightly: “Okay.”
Annie got up and left directly, with a waiter following by her side.
Long Ling originally thought it would be some seafood, as she had eaten enough seafood in the City of Freedom over the past two days. But what was actually served were some very light side dishes.
Long Ling picked up her chopsticks and tasted a couple of bites, finding the dishes to be Chinese style, not greasy, very sweet and delicious. It was the way she had once taught Mina to cook.
Violet observed Long Ling’s eyes widening and felt very pleased: “Is it delicious? The vegetables you grew yourself.”
Long Ling was biting a cool cucumber strip and was stunned by the remark: “It’s been so long? The vegetables haven’t spoiled, and you arranged for someone to tend the farm?”
Violet said softly: “I was waiting for you to come home. All the vegetables you planted on the farm have matured. I had a portion loaded into a carriage and sent to your tavern.”
She thought Violet would have bulldozed the farm she had painstakingly created and planted pasture grass instead.
Long Ling’s feelings were complicated: “Thank you, but there’s no need to send any more after this batch. We’ve already separated, and the farm is yours.”
In the deep sea, Long Ling’s attitude had softened, but she still wanted to completely sever ties with her.
Violet was a little angry: “I will still arrange for people to take care of the farm, and the ripened vegetables will be sent to you.”
Long Ling originally thought she could make Violet retreat, but Violet was still so insistent.
Long Ling’s eyes avoided hers: “I won’t accept them.”
Violet stretched out her long finger and pressed it against Long Ling’s slightly parted red lips: “I will keep sending them.”
The atmosphere between the two was somewhat tense. Long Ling stopped talking to Violet and quietly ate her dishes with her head down.
Violet poured a glass of wine and handed it to Long Ling: “The strawberry fruit wine is still the one you brewed. I drank it every day when you weren’t here.”
Long Ling, who had just taken a sip with her head down, couldn’t help but choke.
Red wine stained her lips. Violet quickly took a handkerchief and wiped the corner of her mouth.
A smile blossomed in Violet’s eyes: “Why are you still so easily flushed? When you weren’t at the manor, I could only sleep holding your pillow every day.”
Long Ling’s cheeks grew hotter. It was hard for her to imagine Violet sleeping with her pillow.
Would Violet’s dragon tail appear and tightly wrap around her pillow?
Long Ling muttered to herself: “I should have taken the pillow with me.”
Violet’s eyes turned dark: “Don’t you dare.”
The heartless little strawberry dragon left her nothing after they separated, not even a piece of clothing. She searched everywhere and only found the crystal kitchen Long Ling had left behind.
Others would leave a token of love to reminisce after leaving, but Long Ling left completely clean, as if she didn’t want any involvement with her in the future.
The more Violet thought about it, the deeper her resentment grew. She picked up the wine glass Long Ling had drunk from and pressed her own red lips against it.
Long Ling’s gaze passed through the ship’s window, looking at the moonlit waves.
The cruise ship quickly arrived at Arripo Island. They could see a bright light from afar; many dragons came here at night.
Annie had been feeling the sea breeze the whole way and eagerly said to Long Ling: “Sister Long Ling, let’s buy tickets to see the show. We can see lots of mermaids.”
Annie led the way, with Long Ling and Violet following behind her.
They went together to the grand stage covered with a red carpet. Beautiful and melodious singing faintly came from behind the red curtain, and the area was already packed with people.
The ticket seller in front was also a beautiful mermaid. The fins on her ears were the blue of seawater, almost transparent, like a luxurious small fan. Her legs were not the bright, shimmering fish tail Long Ling had imagined, but human-like legs. It seemed she could shapeshift, just like a dragon.
Long Ling inquired about the price. A regular ticket was ten gold coins, and a first-class ticket was one hundred gold coins. The seats were closer to the front, allowing for a closer view of the mermaid dance performance.
Long Ling bought three first-class tickets, gave one each to Violet and Annie, and entered the inner hall with them to watch.
They arrived late, but their tickets secured them very good seats, allowing them to sit directly in the front row, center.
This was Long Ling’s first time watching a performance, and everything felt new. The chairs here were polished smooth from underwater reefs, decorated with red gemstone-like coral on the backrest, and the sponge cushions were soft and comfortable to lean against.
The lighting around the stage was already prepared, but the performance hadn’t started yet.
Long Ling looked at the first-class ticket in her hand. The ticket was not made of paper like they usually used, but like the scales of some marine creature, soft yet tough to the touch, with a slight abrasive feel. The shape of the entire ticket resembled a fish swimming in the water.
It was written with “Mermaid Tour Performance Troupe,” the director’s name and contact information, and a small red paw print stamp on the performance time, looking very cute.
Long Ling clenched the ticket in her palm, her lips curling slightly, and she looked up attentively at the stage.
Her palm suddenly felt heavier.
Long Ling looked down and saw an extra ticket in her hand. She turned to look at Violet beside her.
Violet looked at Long Ling’s fresh and curious expression and said softly, “For you.”
Long Ling saw the spoiled look in Violet’s eyes, and her cheeks felt warm: “Why are you giving it to me?”
Violet gestured with her eyes for her to look at the back of the ticket. Long Ling flipped both tickets over and found numbers on the back. Her ticket was number 185, and Violet’s ticket was number 186.
Surprise flashed in Long Ling’s eyes: “There are numbers on the back?”
Violet’s eyes shifted: “There was a wooden sign next to the ticket seller earlier. It said that after the performance, the mermaids would draw a number and give away a lucky pearl.”
A burning air current blew against Long Ling’s earlobe, causing her skin to shiver slightly.
Her heart inexplicably softened: “You keep it.”
Violet smiled and said, “Don’t you like this ticket very much? If it wins, the winning ticket will turn into foam.”
Long Ling suddenly understood what Violet meant, but talking so closely in a whisper, she could smell the rose scent on Violet, which was a bit too intimate.
Long Ling had never broken up with anyone before; she didn’t know if this was appropriate.
Long Ling returned the ticket to Violet: “It might not even win. You keep your own ticket.”
Violet tucked it back: “No, I gave it to you, so you keep it.”
Just as Long Ling was about to hand it back again, Annie suddenly said to her: “Sister Long Ling, take it. Isn’t an extra chance to win a good thing? You bought my ticket, too, so if it wins, I’ll give it to you.”
“Besides, didn’t you want to give a gift to the elf? You could give her this lucky pearl.”
Violet’s face instantly darkened. She wasn’t generous enough to give the little dragon a chance to give a gift to a rival.
Annie had a point, but Long Ling thought about the moon shadow bunny Aeloriis had taken her to see. Aeloriis was a very good friend to her, and she wanted to give Aeloriis something more interesting.
“No need, thank you, Annie. Whoever wins keeps it. I just wanted to see the mermaid performance. I will buy some other things for Aeloriis.”
Annie nodded: “Okay, anyway, there are many mysterious merchants here; we’ll definitely find something that satisfies Sister Long Ling.”
As soon as Long Ling finished speaking, the hand she had lowered was firmly clasped by Violet, fingers interwoven, holding it tightly in her palm.
Violet’s mood lifted slightly upon hearing that the little dragon was not going to give the lucky pearl to the elf, but she still didn’t want the little dragon to see Aeloriis.
Soon, the red curtain was drawn back, and the spotlight shone on the center of the stage. First, a magician in a black cloak walked onto the stage, picked up his staff, and bowed slightly to everyone.
Everyone hadn’t seen a beautiful mermaid and felt a hint of disappointment.
However, the lights suddenly dimmed. When the lights came back on, the stage had turned into a vast ocean.
This magically maintained sea area had waves rolling and brought the salty scent of the sea breeze, as if it was about to splash onto people’s faces any second.
Then, one by one, mermaids swam over, waving their soft, shimmering fish tails, enthusiastically greeting the audience.
How beautiful! This was the most beautiful race in this world Long Ling had seen since the elf race. They had delicate and beautiful scales, just like a dragon’s tail.
After becoming a dragon, Long Ling began to develop a fondness for creatures with beautiful scales.
Long Ling couldn’t help but gasp in admiration. The little mermaid in the center noticed her cute expression and even made a big heart shape with her hands towards her.
Long Ling was a little shy. Just as she saw it for a second, her eyes were blocked by Violet the next second.
“Don’t accept heart signs from others,” Violet said in a lowered voice, sounding somewhat gnashing her teeth.
Long Ling: She knew she shouldn’t have come to the island with Violet.
By the time Long Ling pulled Violet’s hand down, the mermaids had already started dancing in the water.
Long Ling had also danced with Aeloriis during the Elven Mother Tree Festival, but the elf dance and the mermaid dance were completely different.
The elves’ dance was a dance of nature, carrying the scent of the forest, sunshine, and dew, bathed in the golden light of the tree god’s blessing, with petals and ribbons falling onto their skirts. Dancing together was a celebration of the forest festival.
The mermaids were more like spirits living in the ocean. Their dance seemed full of love for the sea, and their singing sounded like a call from the sea. Accompanied by the conch, it made people’s hearts surge, like becoming a free little fish happily playing in the deep, dark sea.
Long Ling didn’t snap out of it until the mermaid dance ended. The little mermaid in the very center slightly raised her hands, and everyone in the audience cheered. The fish tickets in their hands simultaneously rose into the air, and streaks of pale blue light flashed across the surfaces of the tickets in front of them.
This feeling was like waiting to win the lottery. Long Ling looked at the two tickets in front of her, her heart pounding, feeling nervous.
Annie sat next to her, constantly whispering her and Long Ling’s numbers.
Violet kept her eyes fixed on the front.
The little mermaid’s eyes seemed to possess magic, taking in all the cheers from the audience. With a gentle flick of her fish tail, the blue light on all the tickets went out.
Just as everyone was anxiously waiting to see who would win, Long Ling was suddenly embraced by an excited Annie: “Sister Long Ling, you won!”
Long Ling was surprised for a second and saw the fish ticket with the number 186 turn into a golden bubble and fly towards the little mermaid.
That was the ticket Violet had given her!
The surrounding dragons all looked at Long Ling with envy.
The little mermaid received the golden bubble in her palm and winked at Long Ling. A crystal-clear, round tear rolled down and turned into a beautiful pearl.
“Congratulations to number 186 for winning the lucky pearl. If you give it to the person you love, you will surely find happiness.”
The pearl was wrapped by the little mermaid in the golden foam she had just used. With a gentle flick of her fish tail, she sent the pearl to Long Ling.
When the smooth, beautiful pink lucky pearl fell into Long Ling’s hand, the golden foam instantly dissipated. The pearl shone with a faint golden light, carrying the mermaid’s blessing, and was still warm to the touch.
When Long Ling looked up again, all the mermaids had finished their performance and left.
The surrounding audience left one after another while discussing the mermaid performance.
Violet gave the ticket that hadn’t won to Long Ling, her lips coldly beautiful: “You cannot give the lucky pearl to anyone else, understand?”
Annie suddenly popped her head up: “Does that ‘anyone else’ mean me?”
Violet glanced at Annie and continued to stare at Long Ling.
Long Ling knew clearly that Aeloriis wasn’t a dragon, so she definitely wouldn’t like pearls.
She touched her nose and changed the subject: “Let’s go, Annie. Let’s look somewhere else.”
Annie nodded, smiling brightly: “Let’s go. I also know a merchant who sells super delicious monster meat. Sister Long Ling, I’ll take you to try it.”
Violet watched Long Ling and Annie leave together, a dark light flashing across her eyes.
Her lonely figure was constantly being watched by another person.
