- Chapter 36 - Progress and Connections
According to Luna’s diagnostic report, Yu Zhouyao had successfully completed various operations across different mental power spectrums.
Dr. Pei flicked the report paper. “Impressive, Yu Zhouyao.”
Yu Zhouyao tilted her head slightly, saying relaxedly, “Ah, just luck. Pure dumb luck.”
Pei Xian replied, “Based on your physical indicators, there are no issues. You two should be able to train with peace of mind now.”
Mu Mingyue was also delighted. “That’s wonderful, Zhouyao! I knew you were amazing. It’ll be hard work for you to teach me from now on.”
The eldest miss tucked her arm through Zhouyao’s, her hand resting lightly against Yu Zhouyao’s.
Yu Zhouyao shuddered, nearly freezing on the spot. “Eldest Miss, um, okay, alright, I’ll do my best.”
With a smile in her eyes, Mu Mingyue said, “Then we’ll be counting on you, Zhouyao.”
Yu Zhouyao found a spot to sit at the edge of the training grounds. While resting, she shared her insights and experiences with Mu Mingyue. Mu Mingyue listened intently, nodding frequently.
“Mm-hm, Yu Zhouyao, I understand. I’ll keep that in mind.”
Under Dr. Pei’s supervision, Mu Mingyue boarded the intelligent mecha. As the lights flickered on, the mecha “Luna” activated.
Yu Zhouyao’s gaze remained locked on the mecha, not relaxing for even a blink.
Leaning against the instruments, Dr. Pei asked her, “Worried?”
“I am. Aren’t you?”
“After all these years, occasional worry has long since turned into a habitual heartache.”
“Yeah, then let’s wish the Eldest Miss luck together.”
Yu Zhouyao released her mental power, encircling Luna from a distance.
The mecha was like a massive iron cage, locking the pilot inside like a steel coffin. If an accident occurred, it would be difficult for those outside to break in forcefully for a rescue; the person inside could only save themselves. The Eldest Miss was the bird in this cage.
Mental power training is a deeply private and personalized process. It is difficult for outsiders to provide substantive help. Yu Zhouyao could only watch the mecha from afar, using her own mental power to sense the fluctuations coming from it.
Vaguely, Yu Zhouyao sensed that the mecha’s own mental power seemed to be weakening.
Looking at the data, Mu Mingyue was making efforts that were nearly imperceptible, like the old man trying to move a mountain, tiny, yet bringing hope.
Half an hour passed, and the mecha still hadn’t moved. It seemed the Eldest Miss was still struggling with her mental power.
Dr. Pei sent a command, instructing Luna to pause the training and for the pilot to disembark.
The cockpit opened, revealing a sweat-drenched Mu Mingyue.
Standing on the ground, Yu Zhouyao looked up at her. “How do you feel? Are you tired?”
Mu Mingyue panted slightly. “Mm, a little. Mental power training is much harder to do than it sounds.”
Yu Zhouyao handed her a towel to wipe her sweat.
Mu Mingyue looked at her as if complaining, “Yu Zhouyao, just like you said, my mental power is like a boiling ocean; it’s turbulent everywhere. Every time I try to dive a little deeper, it’s like being a paper boat soaked in water; my throat feels the pain of drowning. This is really hard, Zhouyao.”
Yu Zhouyao comforted her softly: “Eldest Miss, don’t be afraid. I felt the same way when I practiced before. Just do what you can. If it hurts too much, please stop to prevent any physical issues.”
Mu Mingyue leaned against the metal shell of the cockpit and whispered, “Okay, I got it.”
After resting for a while, Mu Mingyue continued her practice. Since it was the first day, neither Dr. Pei nor Yu Zhouyao dared to let her overtrain. After three sessions, the day’s schedule concluded.
The high-intensity mental practice seemed to drain Mu Mingyue’s physical and mental energy simultaneously. As soon as she stepped out of the mecha, she leaned against Yu Zhouyao.
“Eldest Miss, can you still walk? If you’re tired, let’s rest before we go.”
Mu Mingyue buried her face in Zhouyao’s shoulder and whispered, “Too tired. I can’t walk. Yu Zhouyao, carry me.”
Her voice was so light, like a murmur of exhaustion. Yu Zhouyao couldn’t believe her ears, thinking she had misheard.
Maybe she’s just too tired, Yu Zhouyao thought.
“Eldest Miss? Eldest Miss?”
Mu Mingyue seemed to have blacked out from exhaustion, closing her eyes to rest directly against her.
Yu Zhouyao’s heart skipped a beat. For a moment, she couldn’t tell if the Eldest Miss was being sincere or intentional.
Even though the training ground was an enclosed space, Yu Zhouyao felt she could clearly sense every change in the atmosphere. With Mu Mingyue leaning on her shoulder, the faint sound of her breathing played against Zhouyao’s heart like a rhythm, making her heart burn and her face flush.
Yu Zhouyao could physically feel her heart racing like a speeding car, as if it were about to burst out of her chest.
Afraid that Mu Mingyue wasn’t leaning securely, she placed her hand tentatively on the Eldest Miss’s shoulder.
After tidying up the area, Pei Xian turned around to see the two of them huddled together.
The reliable adult said nothing, simply walking over and asking Yu Zhouyao softly, “Is she asleep?”
“I think so.”
“Is it convenient to walk?”
“Yes.”
“Need help?”
“Just help me steady her for a moment.”
Pei Xian held Mu Mingyue while Yu Zhouyao shifted her position to gently lift her onto her back.
Dr. Pei led the way to Mu Mingyue’s bedroom. Yu Zhouyao placed her on the bed, and Pei Xian tucked in the corners of the quilt.
The Eldest Miss was too tired; she had fallen asleep. She had been tired for so many years, tired to the point of being a “Sleeping Beauty.”
A flash of heartache crossed Yu Zhouyao’s eyes.
The two of them left the bedroom quietly, walking one after the other down the hallway.
“Yu Zhouyao,” Dr. Pei started, then stopped.
“What is it, Dr. Pei?”
“The data from just now came through. It was very successful.”
“Really? That’s great.”
“Luna indicates that during the practice, Mingyue’s mental power frequency dropped by zero point five percent compared to usual.”
“Mm,” Yu Zhouyao responded. This low figure met her expectations. She said, “At least it’s a good start.”
Dr. Pei paused for a moment before saying, “Yeah.”
She continued, “Even if the decrease isn’t large, at least there’s hope for progress, right? That’s good. Perhaps, after practicing like this a few dozen more times, it can reach a relatively safe level. I’ll take your data back to study it more carefully. You’ve worked hard this time.”
Yu Zhouyao replied, “I’m glad I could help. I’ve been at Shuguang for a long time and owe the Mu family many favors. The Eldest Miss, you, and others, even if it’s just a small bit of help, I’m happy to provide it.”
Dr. Pei looked like she wanted to say more but hesitated.
Yu Zhouyao had a faint inkling of what Pei Xian wanted to say.
She felt a bit apprehensive, fearing the other woman would ask something point-blank. She hadn’t fully figured out her own thoughts yet, nor was she ready with an answer.
Yu Zhouyao didn’t know what she was afraid of. This feeling was completely different from the adrenaline rush of facing a life-or-death crisis.
In the end, the reliable adult said nothing. She just stared at Yu Zhouyao for a moment, trying to observe something in her expression.
After a long silence, she said, “You’ve worked hard, and so has Mingyue. Are you free to come over every Sunday from now on?”
“I can. I’ll make time,” Yu Zhouyao breathed a sigh of relief.
Mu Mingyue had a very sweet sleep. She woke up feeling refreshed, without a hint of fatigue. By the time she opened her eyes, it was already dinner time. She went downstairs to find the other three already seated in the dining room.
Seeing her come down, her mother said with concern, “Oh, Mingyue is awake. Wonderful. You must be hungry, come sit down and eat.”
“I’m coming, Mommy.”
Without a second thought, Mu Mingyue sat next to Yu Zhouyao, directly opposite Pei Xian.
Her cousin took a sharp breath, stopping halfway. Pei Xian glanced at her but said nothing.
Seeing her daughter, her mother kept talking happily: “Mingyue, Xiao Xian told me the practice results were very good. Seeing you wake up so energized makes me feel relieved. You really should thank little Yu; she’s been a huge help. Come, come, Zhouyao, don’t be shy, treat this like your own home and eat more. If there’s anything you don’t like, just say so and I’ll have the chef make something else.”
Sitting beside her, Yu Zhouyao looked as well-behaved as a kitten. “Thank you, Auntie. Everything is delicious, I like it all.”
“Oh, that’s good then.”
Mu Mingyue thought for a moment and added, “Zhouyao, thank you so much for today. I feel amazing right now. Thank you! Oh, right, this steamed sea bass is great, you should try some.”
She took a piece from the belly of the fish and placed it in Yu Zhouyao’s bowl.
“Ah, thank you. Thank you, Eldest Miss,” Yu Zhouyao replied hurriedly, thanking her.
Mu Mingyue thought to herself that she was always so clumsy, clumsy in a way that made people want to laugh. Like a cat baring its claws, it really made her want to tease her.
Looking up, she saw her cousin staring at her again.
Mu Mingyue gave her lovely cousin a sweet smile.
Mu Mingyue enjoyed the meal immensely. No scheming, no fake pleasantries, just eating with interesting people. Having resolved a long-standing trouble, she was so happy she even ate an extra helping of rice.
After dinner, Mu Mingyue saw Yu Zhouyao to the door.
She took Yu Zhouyao’s hand and thanked her softly: “Zhouyao, thank you so much for today. I really don’t know how to repay you. Next week, next week, are you free? It’s okay if you aren’t; I’ll just have my cousin watch me practice.”
Yu Zhouyao was slightly taller than her. Looking down, Zhouyao noticed the other girl’s earlobes were slightly red.
“Um, I’ll be free. I’ll finish my engineering homework ahead of schedule.”
“That’s great! Yay, Zhouyao can stay with me again this week. That way, I’ll be with Zhouyao during mecha class, and Zhouyao will be with me on Sundays. How wonderful.”
Pei Xian coughed, interrupting her.
“Alright, Mingyue, it’s getting late. I should take Yu Zhouyao back. You should rest early too.”
Geez, what’s with my cousin today, always interrupting? Not cute at all.
Mu Mingyue waved goodbye to them.
Back in her room, Mu Mingyue opened her optical computer to find that Pei Xian had sent her a single, large question mark.
Xian: ?
Ah, no wonder my cousin kept interrupting today. I wonder what she noticed? So hard to guess.
Mu Mingyue’s lips curled into a smile.
Hehe.
