- Chapter 34 - The Private Tutor
A few days later, Mu Mingyue arrived at the engineering classroom carrying an exquisite box of pastries.
“Good evening, Zhouyao. I’m here!”
Yu Zhouyao tidied up the scattered parts and invited the young miss to sit.
“Cousin said that from a medical perspective, she hasn’t observed any issues with your training method yet,” Mu Mingyue began. “My mother was quite happy when she heard the plan; she kept praising you for being so clever. I feel the same, no matter what, I’ve tried so many methods since I was a child, and we might as well treat a dead horse as if it were alive. It’s good to try a new way of thinking. What do you think, Zhouyao?”
Yu Zhouyao blinked. That’s strange. Even Dr. Pei couldn’t find any similar cases of loss of control? Is it because she isn’t part of the military system? According to Grandma, there are definitely plenty of mental power accidents in the military.
“We should still proceed with caution,” Yu Zhouyao said carefully. “After all, mental power training is one of the hardest subjects in the academy. We need to be careful about safety.”
Mu Mingyue nodded. “I asked someone to inquire with my aunt. She said she’ll send over a mental power detection device.” She tucked a straw into her milk tea and continued, “As you know, the Thirteenth Army guards the border. Our resources aren’t as plentiful as the inland corps. Even if the Thirteenth Army wants to study mental power, we’re always short-handed.”
“Is that so?” Yu Zhouyao picked up a cookie. “The border is like that. We’re always poor—lacking money, resources, and people. Does the Thirteenth Army not train for mental power?”
Mu Mingyue paused. “There should be some training. The specifics involve military secrets, so I didn’t ask. Like I said before, the Second Army is the one truly skilled in mental power.” She paused, then added, “Oh, I almost forgot to tell you! My family thinks your method is worth a try. They want to know if you’re free this weekend to come to the Mu estate and guide my practice.”
Yu Zhouyao nearly choked. “EH?!”
Mu Mingyue covered her face and giggled. “Oh, Zhouyao, the Mu family isn’t a den of monsters. Why such a big reaction?”
Yu Zhouyao hadn’t expected this. She stammered, “Ah?! This…” She swallowed hard and tried to level her voice. “No… just a bit surprised. Your home is definitely the best choice for practice—plenty of space, plenty of medical staff… it’s just… Miss Mu, what have I done to deserve such an invitation?”
Mu Mingyue smiled. “Don’t be so polite. Besides, isn’t it common to hire a private tutor for paid lessons at one’s own home?”
Yu Zhouyao rubbed her head and managed a smile. Right, whatever you say, Miss Mu. In this territory, the Mu family’s word is law.
“So,” Mu Mingyue leaned in, “when are you free?”
“Mhm… Sunday, I guess.”
“Great! It’s a deal! See you at the school gate then~”
The invitation completely threw Yu Zhouyao off balance. She was both excited and worried. What would the Mu parents think of her? Would her closeness with the young miss leave a bad impression? Compared to the Mu family, a powerhouse of the borderlands she was just a speck of dust. If she accidentally offended someone important, her future military career would be over.
She shook her head, trying to clear the dark thoughts. Stop it. Mingyue is a lovely, bright girl!
Instead of overthinking, she decided to practice more. She hurried through her homework and returned to the mecha classroom.
“Yu Zhouyao! Why are you here again?!” Grandma shrieked. “Don’t you welcome me, Grandma?” “Tsk, you’re a nuisance! Coming here every few days to torture this old lady.” “I’m just visiting a ‘lonely senior.’ I’m worried you’re bored in the hangar, so I’ve brought you a ‘tribute’ of mental power.” “Hmph, then hurry up and pay it!”
After their usual banter, Yu Zhouyao practiced all afternoon, nearly draining the mecha’s power core. She even hopped out to swap in a fresh energy tube for Grandma. When she returned to the cockpit to practice “Reverse Blood-Burning,” the mecha stopped her.
“What are you doing? You’ve practiced dozens of times. Any more and you’ll ruin your body.”
Yu Zhouyao lowered her eyes. “I know. But this Sunday… I have to teach Mu Mingyue. I can’t lead her astray.”
The radio waves fluctuated. “Are you… nervous?” “A little,” Yu Zhouyao admitted. “I’m afraid of teaching her wrong, or being disliked by her family.”
The mechanical voice turned surprisingly gentle. “Don’t be afraid. It’s normal for young people to fear the unknown. But in mecha piloting, your talent is extraordinary. Just charge forward with confidence.”
“Thanks, Grandma,” Zhouyao whispered, leaning back. “Talking to you is really relaxing.”
“Tsk,” the voice dropped back to its usual tone. “If you have ‘pre-exam anxiety,’ practice twice more and then get out of here.”
Sunday arrived. Yu Zhouyao spent a significant sum on a bouquet of fresh-cut flowers as a housewarming gift. She couldn’t afford anything too expensive, but something too cheap wouldn’t suit the Mu family’s status.
A silver shuttle pulled up, and Mu Mingyue waved from the window. “Morning, Zhouyao!”
“Morning.”
Yu Zhouyao handed over the flowers as she boarded. “Are these for me? Thank you!” Mu Mingyue sniffed the daisies. “They smell so fresh.”
“I’m glad you like them.”
“Why are you so quiet today? Nervous?”
“Yeah, a little.”
Mu Mingyue glanced at her. Yu Zhouyao was sitting perfectly straight, hands and feet neatly tucked in. It didn’t look like her at all. Mu Mingyue chuckled inwardly and tapped Zhouyao’s shoulder with a playful fist. “Don’t be nervous. My mom is very kind, and my cousin will be there too.”
The shuttle moved fast, and before Yu Zhouyao could mentally prepare herself, they had arrived. Mu Mingyue hopped out and opened Zhouyao’s door. “We’re here, Teacher Yu.”
Yu Zhouyao’s cheeks flushed. “Stop teasing me.”
Mu Mingyue held the flowers in one hand and naturally took Yu Zhouyao’s hand with the other. “Well then, Student Yu Zhouyao, welcome to my home. Ready to help me practice?”
“I surrender, Miss Mu,” Yu Zhouyao sighed, letting herself be led through the garage and into the main hall of the Mu estate.
