- Chapter 33 - The Debt of Kindness
After several weekends of exploration, Yu Zhouyao gained a new level of understanding and insight into controlling her own mental power.
If everyone’s mental power is compared to a body of water, each has its own characteristics: some are vast and deep, while others are shallow and wide. If Yu Zhouyao’s mental world was a flat, waveless ocean, what would Mu Mingyue’s look like?
Harnessing mental power must follow one’s individual traits. Because Yu Zhouyao’s frequency was naturally low, “Mental Blood-Burning” was nearly impossible for her. Conversely, she found it much easier to achieve a frequency reduction.
Finishing her practice, Yu Zhouyao panted heavily. “So, Ancestor? How was my performance today?”
“Mhm. Your mental power is 40% weaker than your normal state. Yu Zhouyao, you cannot lower your waveband any further. Any more and you won’t be able to support the mecha’s basic operations.”
Yu Zhouyao unscrewed a bottle of water and gulped it down. “I know. I can feel that this isn’t my limit yet, but I don’t plan on challenging the absolute floor of my mental power. Every time I try to lower it, it feels like I’m voluntarily drowning. There’s a painful sensation, like being throttled. It’s exhausting and dizzying.”
“You little brat! Pay attention to your health. I’d hate for you to die so young.”
“Hehe.”
After the water cleared her throat, Yu Zhouyao continued, “Grandma, I reckon I’ve… maybe, probably, definitely mastered ‘Reverse Mental Blood-Burning.’ Is it time to talk to Mu Mingyue?”
“Suit yourself…” The mechanical voice paused, sounding slightly worried. “That Mu girl… she reached the stage where she must learn to control her power long ago. She hasn’t even dared to touch a mecha during class these past few weeks, despite her talent.”
Yu Zhouyao sighed inwardly. “Then it’s settled. See you next week!” She vaulted out of the cockpit and performed a front-flip landing.
Walking back to the dorm, Yu Zhouyao pondered how to phrase things so the Eldest Miss could try “Reverse Blood-Burning” without the risk of an accident.
-
- She needed a secure training ground, the mecha or engineering classrooms were ideal.
-
- She needed medical help. Dr. Pei was a one-woman army, but Mingyue’s loss of control could harm others.
-
- She needed an intelligent mecha to monitor real-time fluctuations. She could “borrow” Grandma for that.
So annoying, Zhouyao thought. Doctors are the hardest people to deal with in this world. She decided to call Dr. Pei.
“Hello, it’s Pei Xian. Yu Zhouyao, is there an emergency?” “Not exactly. I have some new ideas regarding mental power control. Do you have time to chat?” “I do. Can you come to the hospital now?” “On my way.”
At the hospital, Yu Zhouyao briefly introduced her results. Dr. Pei leaned back, stunned. “You’re saying you’ve already figured out ‘Reverse Mental Blood-Burning’? Yu Zhouyao, you…”
“To be honest, I’ve only tried it on myself, but it worked every time. The logic is sound.”
Dr. Pei straightened up, taking a sharp breath. “What kind of freakish talent do you have? I’m almost jealous. No wonder Dawn Academy chose you. I’ll talk to the family. Since this involves unverified research, I have to be cautious.”
“Thanks,” Yu Zhouyao smiled. “By the way, Dr. Pei, is it convenient to settle the final payment for my debt?”
Pei Xian froze, then burst into laughter. “Don’t worry about it, Zhouyao. Your debt was settled long ago.”
“What?”
“Mingyue paid it off for you.” Dr. Pei looked at her deeply. “Wait—did you not know?”
Yu Zhouyao wanted to say something, but the words wouldn’t come out. A massive ripple spread through her heart. When did she pay it? Why? Why didn’t she tell me? Was she hiding it, or was there another reason?
She wasn’t so destitute that she needed charity. She had savings, Eric’s wages… she could have worked at a construction site or taken “grey area” jobs if she had to. What was she thinking? Why help me and say nothing?
A strange mix of emotions flooded her. She felt cherished, yet she feared being the object of a high-born’s casual charity.
Yu Zhouyao walked back to the dorm in a trance. Several times, she opened her chat with Mu Mingyue, but she couldn’t type a single word. How do you start that conversation? How do you ask while keeping both parties’ dignity intact?
She was desperate for an answer, yet terrified that the answer would be one that confirmed her fears—that she was just a project for a bored aristocrat. She kept opening and closing the chat. She tried to rationalize it: Mu Mingyue is a bit of a ‘tea-green’ socialite, but she isn’t an arrogant snob.
Her roommate, Lu Yuan, noticed her pale face. “Zhouyao, are you okay? You look drained.”
“Just… too much homework from Teacher Zhai,” Zhouyao lied. “I’m going to lie down.”
She sprawled on her bed, covering her face with her arm. Dr. Pei was cruel for telling her. For the first time in her eighteen years, Yu Zhouyao felt the agonizing highs and lows of being emotionally invested in someone.
By Monday, she had managed to bury her emotions under her usual “fearless” facade. During mecha class, the focus shifted to Two-Person Combat Coordination. Since Mu Mingyue was still on medical leave from piloting, Yu Zhouyao practiced alone.
“Zhouyao, how was practice today? Hard?” Mu Mingyue asked afterward, her mask of perfection as flawless as ever.
Yu Zhouyao unscrewed a water bottle. “The individual moves are easy. The coordination is likely the hard part. It’s a shame you can’t join.”
Mu Mingyue sighed. “Sorry, Zhouyao. Am I holding you back?”
“No. I just think it’s a waste that you can’t practice.” Yu Zhouyao paused. “By the way, Miss Mu… I talked to Dr. Pei last week. About ‘Reverse Mental Blood-Burning.’ I’ve successfully lowered my own frequency. When the conditions are right, maybe you could try it too?”
Mu Mingyue’s eyes lit up with genuine hope. “Really? That’s amazing, Zhouyao! I knew you’d find a way! You’re incredible!”
“Yeah. Talk to your family about it when you get back.”
Yu Zhouyao smiled. See? Mu Mingyue isn’t like that. Even if she’s using me, she always uses positive encouragement. She felt like a fool for her doubts over the weekend.
