I Was Taken by the Female Lead After Transmigrating into a Book - Chapter 14
When Ji Meng came in, she realized the atmosphere in the room was a little off.
It was tense, ready to break at any moment. To find a more fitting word, it was like a standoff.
She had no idea what was going on. In this situation, it was not good to break the ice abruptly, so she just quietly touched Huo Wu’s arm and said, “What’s the situation?”
Huo Wu glanced at her and said in a low voice, “She lost a pair of nail clippers.”
A look of confusion filled Ji Meng’s face. “?”
Why would the atmosphere in the room be so tense over a lost pair of nail clippers? Even the other patients in the room seemed to be extraordinarily silent.
Soon, Bai Feifei gave her the answer.
Bai Feifei searched her bag again carefully, confirming it wasn’t there. Then she looked up at Huo Wu and said, seemingly very calmly, “Ah Wu, have you seen that pair of nail clippers?”
Huo Wu shook her head. “I put it on the head of the bed after I finished clipping Auntie’s left hand.”
“On the head of the bed, huh.” Bai Feifei smiled at her. “Then maybe I missed it. I’ll look again. Can you wait for me outside?”
Huo Wu was silent this time and agreed.
She and Ji Meng walked to the door and sat down on a chair, but they kept an eye on the movement inside the room.
Ji Meng didn’t speak rashly either. She looked for Bai Xue’s chat window, typed a few words, and asked her what was going on.
Bai Xue didn’t reply right away. Ji Meng put her phone away again and looked aimlessly at the motivational poster on the opposite wall.
Inside the room, Bai Feifei searched the head of the bed, and finally found the nail clippers under the bed sheet.
The small purple item was pressed down at the very bottom, so much so that not even the slightest bump could be seen. Bai Feifei rubbed it with her thumb, looked up at Jiang Yueming with a smile, and said, “I found it, Mom. Xiaoxiao gave me this, and if I lost it, she would have gotten angry with me. Do you remember Fu Xiaoxiao? The little girl who grew up with me.”
Jiang Yueming nodded slowly, not knowing whether she was responding to Bai Feifei’s question or just reacting subconsciously.
Bai Feifei smoothly put everything back into her bag as if nothing had happened. She stroked Jiang Yueming’s hair and said, “Don’t overthink things. Everything will be fine. I’ll come to see you another day. If you want anything, just ask the caregiver to tell me, okay?”
Jiang Yueming still nodded, holding two grapes in her hand and playing with them aimlessly.
Bai Feifei’s eyes were sore, and they even hurt a little. She held back her emotions, stood up, and prepared to leave with her bag. But her hand was held by Jiang Yueming.
The grip was light, and she let go after just one pull.
Bai Feifei looked back.
Jiang Yueming was like a child who had done something wrong, with her head down, tears falling on the blanket, instantly soaking a small area.
She sobbed and said, “Feifei, Mom didn’t mean to…”
“I know,” Bai Feifei let out a big sigh of relief. “Of course you didn’t mean to. I know everything.”
“You know everything?” Jiang Yueming looked up, her face still a little pale, and tears once again poured out.
Bai Feifei nodded, was silent for a while, and then hugged Jiang Yueming. She said softly, “Mom, in this world, you are the only family I have left. Even if it’s not right to say this, but next time, before you can’t control your thoughts and actions, think about it: you have me, your daughter, and I love you very much.”
She felt a damp warmth on her chest. Bai Feifei took a few deep breaths and comforted Jiang Yueming for a while longer.
Perhaps because her emotions had been so up and down, Jiang Yueming’s energy was quickly depleted. She lay back down on the bed and subconsciously murmured, “I really didn’t mean to. I don’t know why I hid it…”
“Then tell me when you have the courage to,” Bai Feifei smiled at her. “There’s nothing we can’t talk about between us, Mom.”
Jiang Yueming finally felt at ease and slowly fell asleep.
The other patients in the ward also seemed to know what was going on. Bai Feifei bowed to them and said in a low voice, “Aunties, my mom just got here, and her condition is not very stable. Please bear with us these next few days.”
“We understand, child,” the auntie in the next bed said with a gentle smile. “You go.”
Jiang Yueming was sent here alone by her caregiver. For so many days, besides Huo Wu and the agent Ji Meng who was with her, Bai Feifei was the third person to come and see her.
They didn’t understand how much suffering was behind all this, but a normal person wouldn’t suddenly get this kind of illness. There must be a reason for it.
At the door, Huo Wu saw everything.
After Bai Feifei went out, she stood at the door for a while, and seeing Huo Wu still waiting for her, she said, “Ah Wu, I have to go to the attending physician’s office. Can you wait for me a little longer? It won’t take long.”
Huo Wu looked at her for a long time, nodded, and said, “Yes.”
Watching Bai Feifei leave, Huo Wu’s lips were pressed together. Her arms, which were wrapped around herself, were slightly tensed, and her knuckles turned white.
The people in the room were probably being considerate of Jiang Yueming sleeping, so their voices were very low. She couldn’t hear them clearly, and could only vaguely hear a few unimportant words.
Ji Meng next to her took a quiet breath.
Huo Wu looked up and turned to face her.
Ji Meng handed her the phone and said in a low voice, “I asked Bai Xue, and only then did I find out that this matter is so serious…”
Bai Xue had not been suffering from depression for long, but the onset was sudden and severe. She didn’t have a strong tendency for self-harm, but she was still ordered by the doctor to be hospitalized for treatment. After that, she temporarily chose to leave the industry to recuperate until her comeback this year.
She had been hospitalized for a while, and it was in the very same hospital they were at now. She knew the situation in the severe depression area very well.
Huo Wu had already seen the message Bai Xue sent. It wasn’t long, only two words, but it was shocking enough.
[Bai Xue: Suicide.]
Huo Wu’s heart skipped a beat at these two simple words. She handed the phone back to Ji Meng, her eyebrows furrowed even more.
Ji Meng now completely didn’t dare to be silly and just waited quietly for Bai Feifei to come back.
After a while, Bai Feifei came out of the doctor’s office and walked toward Huo Wu with a slightly lighter step.
“Ah Wu, I’m done!” Bai Feifei’s eyes were shining.
Huo Wu glanced at her. For the first time, she didn’t give her a cold stare, didn’t say anything sarcastic, and didn’t give a cold, uncomfortable smile. She proactively responded, “Yes.”
Bai Feifei said on her own, “Are you going back to the set later? Have you eaten? How about I treat you to a meal?”
Ji Meng was about to say something, but she heard Huo Wu briefly agree, saying, “Okay.”
Bai Feifei also thought she had misheard, and had already said, “Never mind then…” but then she realized Huo Wu had agreed.
She quickly looked up, her face full of unconcealable surprise. “Really?!”
Huo Wu’s expression was a little unnatural. “Are we going or not?”
“We are! We are, we are, we are!” Bai Feifei happily scurried to her left side.
Ji Meng glanced at them and felt that it wasn’t right for three people to walk shoulder to shoulder in the small hospital corridor, so she voluntarily fell back half a step.
They walked a few steps to the elevator.
She watched the backs of the two people in front of her, one tall and one short, and said, “So, where are you guys eating? What’s the privacy situation like? If you haven’t arranged anything yet, I can book a place for you?”
This question stumped Bai Feifei.
Eating out would definitely require them to take off their masks. Even if they went to a private room, it wouldn’t be a hundred percent guaranteed… Especially since she would be eating with her. In a situation where she was getting so much negative attention.
Bai Feifei’s breath hitched. She suddenly remembered the fridge full of groceries at home that she and Fu Xiaoxiao had stocked up on at the supermarket. Her eyes lit up. “How about I cook? Sister Meng, you can come too. I’m living alone at home right now!”
Ji Meng was stunned and subconsciously looked at Huo Wu.
Huo Wu didn’t hesitate for a moment and had already agreed.
Ji Meng rubbed her nose and swallowed the rest of her words—it would take more than four hours to drive from B City to the film set. If they left now, it would be evening when they got there. If they also spent time making and eating a meal and socializing, they might not get to the set until midnight.
In the car.
The only sound in the car was Bai Feifei’s chattering. She didn’t know where she got all her energy. She would say whatever came to her mind, and could be happy for a long time just pointing at a sign on the side of the road.
Huo Wu listened quietly the whole time. It wasn’t until they entered the villa area that Bai Feifei looked at the sign on the side of the road and suddenly got lost in thought. She said, “So many years have passed, and this place seems to have become unrecognizable to me.”
Huo Wu was confused for a moment. “Haven’t you been living at home the whole time?”
Bai Feifei blinked. “I meant when I was in school…”
Huo Wu’s confusion deepened. She glanced at her, and her hand moved slightly, as if she wanted to check if she had a fever. In the end, she put it down and said indifferently, “You were picked up and dropped off by a driver when you were in college. You didn’t live in a dorm.”
Bai Feifei rubbed her nose and finally stopped talking.
Even though she had taken over the body, she had no memories of the original owner. She could only infer what had happened before, like where she lived and who picked her up. The book couldn’t possibly mention these things.
Bai Feifei paused, looked out the door, and said, “We’re here!”
The small villa wasn’t very big, but Jiang Yueming was clearly a person who loved life. She had planned everything meticulously, and every room served its purpose, making people feel comfortable and at ease when they returned home.
Bai Feifei couldn’t wait to open the door and get slippers for Huo Wu.
Ji Meng parked the car and was a step behind. After getting out of the car, she looked at the lawn in the courtyard that was almost ankle-high and sighed, “This child is pitiful. She just graduated from college and had to go through such a big blow… Oh, by the way, there’s something I don’t know if I should tell you.”
Huo Wu gave her a look. “Don’t beat around the bush. Just say it if you have something to say.”
“The night Bai Feifei called you for help,” Ji Meng paused and said, “I felt like something was wrong afterward, so I looked into it. Her college classmate had set up a dinner for her, and that classmate’s father was the buyer who acquired ‘Wanjia.’ The classmate never showed her face again after that, and still hasn’t. We also found a few pinhole cameras in that room afterward. They weren’t connected to the internet. I still have them, all in a locked box.”
Huo Wu pursed her lips.
Bai Feifei was clinging to the door, only showing the tip of her black head, as if she wanted to call her but was worried about interrupting her conversation with Ji Meng.
She looked pretty and well-behaved.
Huo Wu walked into the house and said slowly to Ji Meng, “Tell me, can someone’s personality suddenly change completely a few years ago, and then suddenly become exactly the same as before a few years later, acting as if everything that happened never did?”
Ji Meng sneered. “How is that possible?”
