I Was Taken by the Female Lead After Transmigrating into a Book - Chapter 13
Jiang Yueming lay on the bed, appearing to have no feeling.
Bai Feifei paused, just about to say that Jiang Yueming had just undergone surgery and might experience temporary memory loss and would not be able to talk much. Just then, she saw Jiang Yueming’s hand move. She actually lifted a few fingers, which Huo Wu caught.
Huo Wu took the opportunity to sit by the window, placed the lilies in her hand on the head of the bed, and smiled at Jiang Yueming.
Bai Feifei was dumbfounded.
She was surprised by Jiang Yueming’s attitude toward Huo Wu, and even more surprised that Huo Wu would come to see Jiang Yueming at all. And listening to the auntie in the next bed, the original owner had not come these last few days, but Huo Wu came often.
“Ah Wu…” Bai Feifei called out to her.
Perhaps out of consideration for Jiang Yueming’s presence, Huo Wu’s attitude was not as cold as before. “What’s wrong?”
Bai Feifei shook her head, just about to say nothing was wrong, when she suddenly noticed the nail clippers in her hand.
A lightbulb went off in her head. She said, “You help me clip her right hand. I won’t go over there; I’ll massage her.”
After the surgery, there would be a temporary physical impairment, and Jiang Yueming’s hands and feet would twitch from time to time. Huo Wu paused, didn’t refuse, and took the nail clippers from her. She lowered her eyes and began to clip Jiang Yueming’s nails.
She clipped them very carefully. After each one, she would also grind the tip of the nail to make it smoother. As Bai Feifei watched, her eyes slowly curved into a smile.
“The auntie in the next bed said that you often come to see my mom?” Bai Feifei asked her.
Huo Wu didn’t even lift her head and said indifferently, “More often than you do.”
Bai Feifei felt the sting, but she didn’t get angry. She just said, “I’ll come often from now on.”
Huo Wu finished clipping Jiang Yueming’s nails, put her arm back on the bed, and returned the nail clippers. Hearing her words, she curled her lips into a smile. “Isn’t that what you’re supposed to do?”
Bai Feifei heard the implication of her words, thinking she only wanted to come often because Huo Wu was here.
She wanted to explain, but Ji Meng, who was waiting outside, knocked on the door and called her.
Huo Wu turned her head and said, “What is it?”
Ji Meng’s face was not bad, but rather a little helpless. She said, “What else could it be? That little ancestor is causing trouble again.”
Bai Feifei was stunned and watched Huo Wu get up, walk to the door, and take the phone from Ji Meng’s hand.
Ji Meng and her only had a brief moment together before she closed the door from the outside.
Bai Feifei blinked and continued to massage Jiang Yueming.
Jiang Yueming seemed to have recovered some strength. She cleared her throat and was actually able to speak.
But her voice was light and weak, as if she had no strength at all. “Feifei, am I going to be a burden to you?”
Bai Feifei was stunned and instantly looked up. “What are you talking about? Of course not.”
Jiang Yueming stopped talking again, and just whimpered and cried.
Bai Feifei stroked her head and said softly, “Don’t think too much. You’re not a burden to me. This is what it’s like after the first treatment. You’ll get better after the second and third times.”
Jiang Yueming sobbed, “Can Mom still get better?”
“Yes,” Bai Feifei said with certainty. “After you’ve finished the second and third surgeries, I’ll ask you each time if you feel better, and you’ll know then.”
Jiang Yueming nodded silently, but the tears kept flowing.
The auntie in the next bed also helped to comfort her. Bai Feifei gave a grateful smile.
Jiang Yueming’s emotions were slowly soothed. About half an hour had passed since the surgery ended, and the initial side effects of the surgery gradually disappeared. She finally stopped crying and became more energetic. She asked Bai Feifei, “Where’s Ah Wu? I think I saw her just now…?”
Her voice was a little uncertain. Bai Feifei quickly interjected, “She went out to make a phone call. I’ll go call her.”
Jiang Yueming nodded quietly.
She had a very typical southern beauty’s appearance, and when she spoke, her voice was very soft, with the unique sweetness of the water towns of Jiangnan, sounding like a pampered child. Bai Feifei patted her hand and said, “You be a good girl, okay? I’ll peel some grapes for you when I get back.”
Jiang Yueming nodded quietly again, her eyes looking in the direction of the Shine Muscat grapes next to the bed, and blinked a little.
The Shine Muscat grapes were purely sweet, and after eating them, there was a fresh scent that was very appetizing, suitable for someone who had just had surgery and didn’t have much taste in their mouth. Huo Wu was indeed very thoughtful.
Bai Feifei went out and searched for a long time but couldn’t find anyone. She was also worried about exposing Huo Wu’s whereabouts, so she didn’t dare to ask at the nurse’s station. She just looked for her alone on the floor.
Huo Wu could be in the lounge, the rest area, the bathroom… Finally, she saw her in the fire escape stairwell.
Ji Meng was standing by the door with her arms crossed, pacing back and forth in place without any particular purpose.
Bai Feifei walked over. She couldn’t see anyone through the crack in the door, only some cigarette butts in the corner. They had been there for some time, likely left by a patient’s family member.
“Sister Meng, where’s Ah Wu?”
“Inside, on the phone,” Ji Meng glanced at her and said, “Is something wrong?”
“My mom wants to see her,” Bai Feifei said honestly.
Ji Meng thought about it and made way for her.
Before Bai Feifei entered, she suddenly stopped and said, “Does Ah Wu often come to see my mom?”
Ji Meng smiled and said, “Yes, she comes whenever she’s free. When Auntie misses her, she’ll fly back if Auntie sends her a message.”
As for Bai Feifei herself, she had been busy with who knows what these past few years. She was as elusive as a dragon, and the news about her was not healthy or positive at all, even to the point of being absurd.
Jiang Yueming’s condition had taken a sharp turn for the worse over the years, and it was not unrelated to Bai Feifei herself.
Ji Meng had never been this close to Bai Feifei before. Now she had a good look at her. Her face was fair and delicate, and she looked clean all over. Her eyes were black and white, and she didn’t look like a worldly adult, but more like a child, the kind that makes people want to indulge and protect them.
Seeing Bai Feifei’s attitude toward Jiang Yueming today, it was hard to believe that she hadn’t come to visit for so long. She seemed to know how to take care of a patient, and her relationship with Jiang Yueming seemed very close.
Bai Feifei smiled at her, her eyes curving into crescent moons. “Thank you, Sister Meng!”
This greeting, accompanied by that smiling face, made Ji Meng very happy. She smiled and said, “Go on in.”
Bai Feifei followed the sound and walked in. She saw Huo Wu around a corner. She was standing in a corner by the window, with one hand in her pocket, listening to the person on the phone. She didn’t interrupt, but her expression was relaxed and she looked a little gentle.
Bai Feifei’s steps subconsciously became lighter.
Then, the person on the phone seemed to have finally stopped talking. Huo Wu listened patiently for a while, and actually smiled, saying to the other end of the phone, “Don’t cry. I miss you too. If you really can’t wait, just fly over. I’m free these next few days, so I can be with you. I’ll have Ji Meng pick you up at the airport. See you tomorrow at the film set.”
Bai Feifei’s heart instantly sank.
Huo Wu hung up the phone and didn’t show any extra emotion when she saw Bai Feifei.
She put her phone away, both hands in her pants pockets, standing in place with a somewhat lazy posture. “Why did you come?”
Bai Feifei’s lips moved, and she said with some difficulty, “My mom was asking for you…”
“Yes,” Huo Wu responded, and lifted her leg to go up the stairs.
She brushed past Bai Feifei without a single extra word of explanation, or even a single extra word.
Bai Feifei looked at her back and found that she couldn’t see clearly. She rubbed her eyes and realized that she was crying.
The tears had blocked her vision, so of course, she couldn’t see.
She wiped her eyes, sniffled, and followed. At the door, she met Ji Meng again, who was waiting for her and hadn’t gone upstairs.
Ji Meng seemed a little surprised and taken aback. “What’s wrong? Why are you crying?”
Had she been in there for two minutes to find Huo Wu? And Huo Wu had already made her cry?
Bai Feifei said sullenly with her head down, “It’s nothing.”
She had known for a long time that Huo Wu had a girlfriend… She should have expected this. Bai Feifei looked up again, forced a smile, and said, “Sister Meng, I’m going back first.”
Ji Meng nodded to her, watching the two of them leave one after the other.
In the ward, Jiang Yueming seemed to have returned to normal.
When Bai Feifei went in, she was even sharing the grapes Huo Wu had brought with her roommates.
Jiang Yueming didn’t like to eat many things, but she especially loved fruit. When her appetite was poor after surgery and she couldn’t eat, fruit could be used to supplement her nutrition.
Some varieties of fruit were quite expensive, and the Bai family couldn’t afford to eat them often with their current financial situation. Every time Huo Wu came, she would bring a lot, which was why Jiang Yueming had a good relationship with her roommates.
Huo Wu only took off her mask for a moment when she first entered and talked to Jiang Yueming, but she kept it on after that. Bai Feifei guessed that this was why the aunties in the ward didn’t know who she was. Otherwise, the ward would not be as quiet as it was now.
When Huo Wu came back, she stayed and talked with Jiang Yueming for a while. Bai Feifei listened and remembered. It was then that she realized that during the years when the original owner had existed in her place, Huo Wu’s relationship with Jiang Yueming had become so good.
In terms of closeness, it would not be an exaggeration to say they were a biological mother and daughter.
“Are you leaving already?” Jiang Yueming reached out and grabbed Huo Wu’s hand reluctantly, like a child. “When will you come to see me next?”
Huo Wu squeezed her hand back and said with a smile, “You’ll see me again after your next surgery. Auntie, you don’t need to be afraid.”
Bai Feifei’s heart skipped a beat, and she subconsciously looked up.
Jiang Yueming relaxed a lot and finally let go of Huo Wu’s hand.
After saying goodbye to her, Huo Wu was about to leave. Bai Feifei looked at the time and knew she should be going too. She kept an eye on Jiang Yueming’s precautions while packing her things, planning to leave with Huo Wu.
“Ah Wu, wait for me,” Bai Feifei put the items from her checklist back into her bag one by one, but found that something was missing.
A small, inconspicuous item: the nail clippers.
Huo Wu hadn’t planned to wait for her. She had already walked to the door when she suddenly heard Bai Feifei say, “Mom, have you seen my nail clippers?”
Jiang Yueming’s movements on the bed stopped.
The other patients in the ward seemed to realize something and all turned their heads in unison to look at the innermost bed.
Huo Wu’s hand on the door handle paused. She froze at the door and subconsciously turned her head back.
Then she saw Bai Feifei empty all the things out of her bag—a numbers game, hair-cutting scissors, wet wipes… a lot of miscellaneous things, even as small as an eyebrow razor, all daily care items.
Everything she could think of, and even things she couldn’t, Bai Feifei had brought.
But the one thing that was missing was the inconspicuous pair of nail clippers that she had just used to clip Jiang Yueming’s nails.
