I Was Taken by the Female Lead After Transmigrating into a Book - Chapter 15
The two of them entered the house together.
The slippers at the door were neatly arranged and looked very new. Not far away, on a cabinet, were the newly removed tags.
Ji Meng sat on the shoe-changing stool, greatly puzzled, and took off her shoes. Her red high heels looked very out of place with the overly childish slippers in front of her. She looked at the style she hadn’t seen in a long time with curiosity and looked down. “What’s this? A little yellow chick? What’s yours? A big strawberry?”
Huo Wu was quiet for a few seconds, trying to find some more normal-looking slippers from a cabinet on the side, but she failed.
Bai Feifei had already gone into the kitchen. She was rattling around, and there was the dull thud of a knife hitting a cutting board.
“Accept it, Ah Wu,” Ji Meng laughed. After putting her feet into the slippers, she observed them for a while. “After so many years with you, I’ve almost forgotten what ‘cute’ is…”
Huo Wu’s dressing style had always been simple. She was tall and had a good figure, a walking clothes rack in herself. But after seeing the same monotonous style for over a decade, anyone would find it hard to bear and would lose their aesthetic sense.
Huo Wu didn’t say anything and changed her shoes as well.
It was actually very comfortable. After putting her feet in, the pressure from wearing high heels all day was relieved, and she actually felt a genuine urge to let out a sigh of contentment.
The two of them walked in together.
The house was bright, and the furniture and appliances were all spotless, as if they had just been cleaned. The doors and curtains of all the rooms were wide open, and the wind from the central air conditioner made people feel comfortable and at ease. Even though there was only one person living there, the atmosphere of a “home” was still created. It was the kind of place where you could take a picture and upload it to social media without needing to touch it up.
Ji Meng admired the place and concluded, “She’s better at living than you are.”
Huo Wu also had a temporary residence in B City, a two-bedroom apartment that was large, over 130 square meters, and came with an outdoor garden.
This was in stark contrast to Bai Feifei’s home. The overall decor of Bai Feifei’s home was a European pastoral style, with little floral patterns and lace everywhere, and the dust covers were also decorated in this way.
Huo Wu’s place…
…was completely black, white, and gray.
Every time Ji Meng went there, it didn’t feel like someone’s home, but more like a model room.
Bai Feifei came out of the kitchen.
She was holding two trays in her hands, her eyes bright. “You guys have some fruit first. I’ll go get ready. I cook very quickly!”
The fruit was quite a variety. Huo Wu also loved to eat it. After she thanked her, she watched Bai Feifei go back in to get busy.
“Aren’t you going to help?” Ji Meng nudged her with her foot.
Huo Wu’s eyes lingered on the kitchen door for a brief moment, and finally she shook her head and said, “Help with what? Is cooking that difficult?”
Ji Meng just smiled, thinking she was so stubborn.
Bai Feifei was not being humble when she said she was quick. From the time she went in until she came out, it had only been forty minutes. She had already prepared the main course with side dishes, and even a dessert.
“What’s this? A jelly?” Ji Meng’s eyes widened. She used a spoon to tap the wobbly, round jelly in front of her. Below the jelly, there was a layer of powder, like a dipping sauce, a very strange combination.
Ji Meng said with a little disbelief, “You made this?!”
Bai Feifei nodded seriously. “Yes, Sister Meng, you should try some…”
After saying that, Bai Feifei turned around and said enthusiastically, “Ah Wu, the one I made for you is plum-flavored. It’s very appetizing. Don’t you always feel tired and have a poor appetite in the summer? Want to try it?”
Huo Wu took the spoon Bai Feifei handed to her, holding it between her thumb and forefinger, but she made no further movement.
Bai Feifei watched her nervously, her hands clenched into fists on the table, like a child waiting to be praised.
Huo Wu’s hand stopped. She said softly, “You have something dirty on your face.”
“Huh?” Bai Feifei was confused and subconsciously licked the corner of her lips with her tongue. “Where?”
Her lips, which were already pink, looked even more crystalline because of the moisture. Huo Wu tightened her grip on the spoon, her voice also tightening. “On the side of your face.”
Bai Feifei reached out and touched it again, but she couldn’t feel anything.
Huo Wu finally frowned, and with her free hand, she reached out and wiped away the white smudge on her face.
Her face was very soft, like an egg.
Huo Wu lowered her eyes, wiped the smudge on a tissue, and said, “There, it’s gone.”
Bai Feifei subconsciously scratched her face, taking a deep breath for some reason—it was just a simple wipe, but for some reason, she felt the itch on her face spread to her heart.
It was almost dinner time, and all the dishes Bai Feifei made were appetizing. The two of them got hungrier as they ate, and couldn’t help but eat their fill.
After she finished eating, Ji Meng slumped back in her chair and felt a belated sense of fatigue after a full meal. “It’s been so long since I’ve had a proper meal… This is even more delicious than the food at a five-star hotel.”
Bai Feifei thought she was deliberately complimenting her and said with a smile, “It’s not that exaggerated.”
“I’m serious,” Ji Meng laughed, and pointed at the empty bowl in front of her, which even the soup had been drunk from. She said with a smile, “I can’t put my finger on the difference, but the things you make make people want to finish all of it.”
The plates on the table were completely empty.
Bai Feifei turned to look at Huo Wu. She was eating the last bite of cold noodles, her eyelashes slightly lowered, and her lips were red.
Outside, the sky was getting dark. The streetlights in the villa area had already turned on, illuminating small, intermittent areas, making one want to go out for a walk.
Bai Feifei thought so and made that suggestion.
Ji Meng didn’t want to move. She couldn’t explain why, but she was terribly lazy. All she wanted to do was lie down and rest for a while; she might even fall asleep the next second. “You two go. I’ll rest for a bit and recharge my energy. When you’re done with your walk, I still have to drive her back to the film set.”
Bai Feifei was suddenly a little nervous. “Ah Wu, do you want to go?”
Huo Wu looked at her, and then out the window.
A moment later, she nodded and said, “Okay, let’s walk.”
Bai Feifei’s father was not a very ambitious person. Before his bankruptcy, he was more focused on his family. Bai Feifei couldn’t imagine what could have driven such a person to abandon his beloved family and commit suicide, but it was undeniable that even after he left, he left everything he could for his wife and daughter.
The sky was getting late, and it was dinner time. There were not many people on the road, but there were many people in the neighborhood walking their dogs. There was a small garden platform nearby, which was a favorite place for people in the area to walk and cool down. Bai Feifei and Huo Wu walked side by side, and found that time could indeed be quiet and beautiful.
“About what happened during the day,” Huo Wu suddenly said, breaking the quiet and somewhat ambiguous atmosphere. “I’m sorry.”
Bai Feifei didn’t realize what she was talking about for a moment. She subconsciously looked up, past her shoulder, at her refined profile, and said dumbfounded, “What?”
“The nail clippers,” Huo Wu pursed her lips. “It was my fault. I was too careless.”
“How can you blame yourself?” Bai Feifei paused and said, “How could a normal person know that a patient in the severe depression ward would hide these things? Besides, I’m the one who brought the items, and I’m the one who asked you for help. I should have been the one to be careful.”
Huo Wu’s eyes were fixed on Bai Feifei, both of her hands were in her pockets, and they were sweating.
Bai Feifei looked at her, her eyes wet, like they were sparkling with fire.
Just like before she left, they were full of trust, full of affection, full of pure sincerity.
This kind of person…
Huo Wu stopped.
In front of them was a bustling crowd. Under the lights were some of the celebrities that Bai Feifei had often seen in the newspapers these days, from various fields. Some were chatting with friends, some were enjoying the evening breeze, and some were silently smiling and watching the children play in the distance.
Behind them was the small path they had walked on, where countless streetlights seemed to extend to an unknown end, where nothing could be seen clearly.
Many years ago, it was the exact same situation.
She had learned that the Bai family had returned to B City, and she left the set late at night and waited for a full hour downstairs.
Bai Feifei was urged by Jiang Yueming to leave the house. Before she went upstairs, she was still admonishing Bai Feifei not to be willful and to talk to her properly.
At that time, she was full of hope, and even a little angry, and she had many fantasies about Bai Feifei apologizing to her, telling her that she was wrong, hoping she wouldn’t blame her, and then telling her her own difficulties.
But in the end, she only saw a person who looked completely unfamiliar, with tattoos all over her body, flirting with someone on the phone, and then said something to her with a look of disgust.
“Get lost.”
That single word completely crushed her. After that, she watched with her own eyes as Bai Feifei hugged and kissed the person who had come to pick her up, looked at her as if she were garbage, and then drove away arrogantly with the roaring sound of the engine.
It was also a hot summer day at that time, but she felt as if she was in an ice cellar, so cold that she was sweating all over, and her fingertips were numb, just like now, with her palms all sweaty.
But when they met again, Bai Feifei behaved like a child. She didn’t even know how to kiss properly. With just a little bit of teasing, her whole body would go numb, and she could only gasp and cry.
Huo Wu stopped under an old tree. It was the rainy season, so the weather was humid and muggy, but the evening was more comfortable. There was a cool breeze, and occasionally, frogs could be heard croaking by the roadside.
It was not quiet, even a little noisy.
In this situation, Huo Wu spoke. She looked at Bai Feifei and suddenly said, “Bai Feifei, what exactly do you want to do?”
