I Was Taken by the Female Lead After Transmigrating into a Book - Chapter 12
The car drove away.
Ji Meng subconsciously wanted to see Bai Feifei’s reaction behind them, but she was unexpectedly amused.
“She’s still waving at you back there,” Ji Meng said. “Really not going to say hello?”
Huo Wu took immense effort to resist turning her head, and said flatly, “Just drive.”
Ji Meng was not afraid of her being upset. She chuckled lightly and said, “That girl, Bai Feifei, is as bright and radiant as a little sun.”
Just as she was about to turn a corner, she glanced back and saw that Bai Feifei had perfectly timed their impending departure. She was still waving and bouncing up and down in the same spot.
Ji Meng suddenly felt a little dazed, thinking that the girl didn’t look like she had gone through a major family upheaval at all.
Not many people could go through so much turmoil and still be so happy.
Ji Meng stared at the back for a while and said with certainty, “A little sun from the Super Mario brand, and it bounces, pounce, pounce… Don’t you like to play that game?”
Huo Wu tapped the car door twice with her hand, her face turning cold, and said, “That’s enough.”
Ji Meng shrugged and said no more.
Huo Wu lowered her head to look at her phone. The screen showed a little figure in a red hat, bouncing from platform to platform in a level. In front of it was a small chimney.
She operated the figure, and with a whoosh, it jumped into the chimney.
GAME OVER.
Huo Wu frowned, exited the interface, and looked at the desktop. She said, “Don’t go back to the film set. Go to a flower shop first.”
Ji Meng turned the corner, didn’t ask any more questions, and said yes.
The car was long out of sight. Bai Feifei stood there, reluctant to leave, and sniffed the lingering scent in the air, exclaiming, “It smells so good.”
Fu Xiaoxiao, who happened to walk up next to her, immediately had a hesitant expression. She could only smell the exhaust fumes, and said with difficulty, “Are you sick?”
“I’m not sick, thank you,” Bai Feifei wrinkled her nose, and then happily said, “Ah Wu just told me to buy some cherries.”
“What for?” Fu Xiaoxiao asked, confused.
Bai Feifei said very seriously, “I’ve thought it through carefully. She must know that my stomach hasn’t been well these last two days, so she wants me to eat more fruit. Isn’t this the season for cherries? She cares about me, and wants me to go buy some.”
Fu Xiaoxiao was silent, still not understanding the direct connection between buying cherries and a bad stomach.
Bai Feifei continued, “She cares about me, so that means she likes me, right?”
“That makes sense!” Fu Xiaoxiao finally understood. “I also think she definitely likes you. Auntie Xue just said that Ji Meng came out to save you, and said she wanted to take you on, but who knew you’d already managed to convince the boss yourself… Ji Meng is Huo Wu’s agent, and she works for Beidou. She wouldn’t create trouble for herself. She must have had Huo Wu’s permission to do this.”
Bai Feifei was stunned, and subconsciously looked back at Bai Xue, who was still standing with her hands behind her back under the porch.
“Why didn’t you tell me earlier?” Bai Feifei murmured.
“Why would I have told you earlier?” Fu Xiaoxiao said, her big eyes wide, her air of being a two hundred and fifty percent fool almost innate.
Bai Feifei felt like she was punching cotton and said, “If I had known a little earlier, I could have talked to her for a little longer!”
She also wouldn’t have to deceive herself and comfort herself by saying that Huo Wu liked her. Huo Wu cared about her, told her to buy fruit, and also asked Ji Meng to ask Bai Xue to come to her rescue. She also considered her future and asked Bai Xue to personally take her on.
—Before Bai Xue retired and went into seclusion, she had managed five award-winning actresses.
Even though she had been away from the industry for many years, her connections, network, and abilities were still there. Taking on a rookie like her was more than enough.
In the evening, after eating lunch, Bai Feifei went home to pack some things.
Fu Xiaoxiao was squatting on the first floor playing a game with the volume up loud. At first, she didn’t notice her. It was only when Bai Feifei started putting her things into her bag that she looked up, put down the controller, walked over, picked up a pair of scissors, and said, “What are you taking all this stuff for? Going to an arts and crafts class?”
The scissors were not ordinary household scissors; they were hair-cutting scissors with serrated blades.
Bai Feifei reached out and took them back. “Come with me to a place. Once we get there, I’ll let you go and have fun. I’ll even let you drink and stay out all night tonight.”
Fu Xiaoxiao’s eyes lit up. “Where are we going?”
“Fifth Hospital,” Bai Feifei paused and said.
Fu Xiaoxiao was stunned. “The mental hospital?”
“Yes.”
Fifth Hospital is the city’s Fifth People’s Hospital, the Mental Health Center.
The original owner’s mother was being treated there. Counting the time, she should have been admitted for about a week of treatment.
The original owner’s mother…
Bai Feifei waited for Fu Xiaoxiao to start the car, and then suddenly looked back at the courtyard.
She had lived in this book for thirteen years, from the age of three until she left at sixteen. Thirteen springs, autumns, and summers. She couldn’t tell the difference anymore between who the real Bai Feifei was, and who should be the daughter of the person now in the hospital.
“Let’s go, my love!” Fu Xiaoxiao drove out and called to her. “What are you thinking about? Don’t worry, Auntie loves me very much. I’ll go with you…”
“You don’t need to go in,” Bai Feifei said. “She’s having an MECT surgery today. After the surgery, she won’t recognize anyone and won’t want to talk. There’s no point in you staying there with me.”
“Okay,” Fu Xiaoxiao said in response.
When she dropped her off at the hospital, as Bai Feifei was about to get out of the car, Fu Xiaoxiao grabbed her forearm, lowered her voice, and said softly, “Call me if you need anything. I won’t drink tonight.”
“Okay,” Bai Feifei patted her forehead and said with a smile, “Then go and bond with Auntie Xue. Learn from her how to be a good assistant. She also started out as an assistant and ended up becoming a top agent.”
After saying goodbye to Fu Xiaoxiao, Bai Feifei went straight up to the tenth-floor ward of the inpatient department.
This was what the original owner had written in her calendar.
July 23rd, wear a white dress, put on light makeup to see Mom, Ward 1052, Bed 16.
Bai Feifei walked forward along the corridor. In the afternoon, the corridor was bright with the simple, white aesthetic unique to the People’s Hospital. Occasionally, family members would walk back and forth with nurses. Their pace was not hurried, but there was no emotion on their faces.
Bai Feifei found the ward and looked inside through the small window on the door.
The bed was empty.
She found a nurse and asked, “Hello, I’d like to ask where the patient in bed 16 is?”
Patients with severe depression have a caregiver, and their whereabouts are recorded 24 hours a day.
The nurse looked through the chart and said, “She’s already in the operating room.”
“What time did she go in?” Bai Feifei was stunned. “Wasn’t the surgery scheduled for six o’clock sharp?”
“The surgery schedule depends on the doctor’s arrangements for the day. There may be changes,” the nurse glanced at her and said, “Are you the patient’s family?”
Bai Feifei nodded quickly and heard the nurse say, “Take the elevator on the left down to the sixth-floor operating room. Wait there to pick her up.”
Bai Feifei acknowledged this, turned around, and went downstairs with her bags.
After waiting outside the door for about twenty minutes, someone was pushed out. Bai Feifei looked and confirmed it was her mother, Jiang Yueming. She put her bag back on and ran over.
The nurse who was pushing the gurney looked up and asked, “Are you the patient’s family?”
Bai Feifei nodded and followed her into the special elevator, going straight up to the tenth floor. MECT patients are conscious after the surgery, but judging by Jiang Yueming’s appearance, there were still side effects. Although she was conscious, there was no light in her eyes. She was also very quiet, and the frequency of her blinking was very slow, aside from her breathing.
She sighed, listening to the doctor’s instructions, and together they helped her lie back down on the bed.
The nurse gave some instructions and left. The ward became quiet. A breeze blew in from the opened window crack, feeling warm, because the air conditioning in the room was set low.
The ward was not a private room; there were two other beds next to them. The patients also had smiles on their faces and looked over, even helpfully offering to assist. After Bai Feifei thanked them, one auntie who looked to be in her fifties asked her, “Who is the person on the bed?”
Bai Feifei smiled at her and answered in a clear voice, “She’s my mom. Thank you, auntie, just now.”
The auntie smiled and waved her hand, saying with a twinkle in her eyes, “I haven’t seen you here for the past few days. Have you been busy with school?”
“Yes,” Bai Feifei found it hard to say yes or no, so she just answered vaguely.
She took a pair of nail clippers from her bag and began to clip Jiang Yueming’s nails.
When she finished one hand, Bai Feifei looked up, took a wet wipe to clean her hand, and saw that Jiang Yueming was crying silently, her eyes fixed on her.
Bai Feifei’s voice caught in her throat for no reason, and her eyes suddenly turned red. After a long pause, she finally managed to say a word that felt a little too unfamiliar to her: “Mom?”
Tears fell from the corners of Jiang Yueming’s eyes. Bai Feifei skillfully took out a tissue and wiped them away, then took a few more tissues and placed them under Jiang Yueming’s ear to prevent the pillow from getting wet with tears.
Jiang Yueming had no response for her, neither in her actions nor in her words, but Bai Feifei could feel her emotions. She wanted to speak, but her body wouldn’t allow it.
Bai Feifei said in a low voice, “I’m not going anywhere today. I’ll just stay here with you. You’re not feeling well right now. I’ll take care of you. I’m clipping your nails. Be a good girl, okay?”
Jiang Yueming blinked, and indeed stopped moving. Only the tears continued to flow.
For some inexplicable reason, the auntie in the next bed also started crying. She didn’t have family to take care of her, so the patients in the ward would comfort each other. Bai Feifei lowered her eyes and continued to clip Jiang Yueming’s nails.
Just then, the door opened.
Everyone in the room looked up at the door. Bai Feifei was busy clipping Jiang Yueming’s nails and didn’t care who it was, so she didn’t pay attention. The auntie who had just greeted Bai Feifei smiled at the person at the door and said, “Xiao Huo is here? Came to see bed 16 again?”
Bai Feifei’s hand trembled, and she almost clipped crookedly. She instinctively looked up.
At the door was Huo Wu.
She was wearing a light-colored dress, and her hair was simply tied back into a low ponytail. Some loose strands fell along her cheeks, casually hanging by her ears, making her look both elegant and gentle.
She was holding a bouquet of lilies in her arms, and in her hand, she was carrying Shine Muscat grapes, which were very hard to find in this season, and which were Jiang Yueming’s favorite fruit.
Their eyes met for a moment. Huo Wu paused at the door, seemingly surprised to see Bai Feifei there. There was shock, confusion, and more than anything, doubt.
She entered, took off her mask, and walked straight to the side of bed 16. She softened her voice and said to Jiang Yueming on the bed, “Auntie, I’ve come to see you.”
