- Chapter 77 - A Side Story of Jinxiu
Gu Jinhua felt that Zheng Xiuxue had been acting strangely lately.
The strangeness showed in the way she kept avoiding her. For example, during a recent set visit, Zheng Xiuxue clearly had nothing urgent going on, but suddenly went off to hang out with someone else, leaving Gu Jinhua alone and awkward.
It left her feeling upset. But no matter how uncomfortable she felt, she just couldn’t bring herself to blame Zheng Xiuxue. Instead, she always ended up sulking quietly on her own.
In the past, if something like that happened, Zheng Xiuxue might have felt a little guilty and come to coax her. But now, she acted like nothing was wrong. Gu Jinhua was tired of this kind of silent struggle and had already gone several days without speaking to her.
Then one day, Qi Xiyao invited her to play a game, and inside the game lobby, she saw Zheng Xiuxue.
At first, Gu Jinhua wanted to leave right away. But when she heard the cheerful laughter between Zheng Xiuxue and Qi Xiyao, a quiet anger began to stir in her chest.
After all, she didn’t owe Zheng Xiuxue anything. It was Zheng Xiuxue who had been acting high and mighty, constantly messing with her. She wasn’t going to put up with it.
So, Gu Jinhua didn’t run away like a mouse seeing a cat. Instead, she deliberately avoided direct interaction and made casual jokes with Qi Xiyao.
While Yu Peirong wasn’t in the lobby yet, the three of them played in a very awkward atmosphere. Both Gu Jinhua and Zheng Xiuxue spoke only to Qi Xiyao and deliberately ignored each other, which made Qi Xiyao visibly uncomfortable. She really didn’t understand how complicated things could be between college students these days.
Although Gu Jinhua was already a well-known up-and-coming screenwriter in the industry, she was still just a university student. Zheng Xiuxue was in her senior year, currently interning. She was already capable of helping Yu Peirong with work, but she was still only twenty years old.
The deadlock finally broke when Yu Peirong joined the team.
Zheng Xiuxue was very serious about gaming. She was not the type to fight with friends over a match, but she also couldn’t stand being held back in competitive games.
Once she realized the infamous hook player on the opposing team was her own sister Yu Peirong, she lost interest. She would rather lose points solo than have her rank depend on her sister’s performance. So she decisively left the team.
She said she had something to do, but in truth, she switched to a side account to play freely. Gu Jinhua, who knew her well, immediately followed her lead. When she saw Zheng Xiuxue go offline, she also logged off and switched to her own alternate account.
It was like an unspoken agreement between the two of them. As soon as she logged in, Gu Jinhua instinctively invited Zheng Xiuxue to a private game room.
Zheng Xiuxue accepted the invite, but once she entered the lobby, she hesitated. Just as she was about to exit, Gu Jinhua clicked the “Start Match” button.
Her voice, slightly hoarse from not drinking water, came through with a low, raspy tone. She asked with deliberate sarcasm,
“Now suddenly you’re free?”
To her surprise, Zheng Xiuxue didn’t respond. Disappointment and confusion welled up inside Gu Jinhua. Her voice caught in her throat as she sat at her desk, staring at the mirror beside her monitor. Her expression slowly shifted into one of frustration and helpless sadness.
She clenched her sleeves and, after a moment, hesitated as she moved to click the “Cancel Match” button. Her voice was uncertain.
“If you really don’t want to—”
“Let’s talk. Tomorrow.”
Zheng Xiuxue interrupted her.
The sudden response made Gu Jinhua freeze. Before she could say anything else, they were already pulled into the game to select heroes.
They ended up playing for a long time but said almost nothing to each other. Aside from the occasional necessary in-game communication, there was only silence. They played until two or three in the morning, exhausted, and finally went to sleep.
As an Alpha, Gu Jinhua had strong stamina, so staying up late didn’t affect her much. Still, before going to bed, she set the meeting time for the next evening. That way, they could avoid the dinner rush, and Zheng Xiuxue would have time to sleep in.
They met at a Japanese-style barbecue buffet, a place the two of them had often visited together in the past. It had private rooms. Tomahawk steaks simmered in a sukiyaki pot, and the sweet ingredients mixed with the aroma of grilled beef. On the hot iron plate, slices of squid and marbled wagyu sizzled as they cooked.
Gu Jinhua prepared a dipping sauce with sesame paste and handed it to Zheng Xiuxue. It was just the way she liked it. She used her chopsticks to dip a freshly cooked slice of beef into the sauce. The smell alone was enough to lift anyone’s mood.
Zheng Xiuxue was wearing light makeup. They hadn’t seen each other in a while, and her hair was now cut short, just brushing her shoulders, making her delicate face look even more elegant. Unlike the soft and graceful Omega types with long hair, Zheng Xiuxue’s short haircut gave her a refined and noble aura. Her eyes were a pale shade, and when she stared quietly at Gu Jinhua, the one who had intended to come and confront her suddenly found herself unsure how to speak.
Gu Jinhua lowered her head and focused on slicing the tomahawk steak, her heart full of frustration at her own weakness.
After all, it was Zheng Xiuxue who had been acting strangely. She had ignored her for no reason, hung out with other people, and made her feel irritated and hurt.
If it had been someone else, Gu Jinhua would have had no trouble giving them a piece of her mind. Her sharp tongue could cut down anyone in seconds. But it was different with Zheng Xiuxue. Even though nothing made sense, and no amount of self-reflection gave her answers, she still couldn’t bring herself to be harsh.
“I’m sorry.”
Zheng Xiuxue’s gentle voice broke the silence. She looked at Gu Jinhua with soft eyes and a faint, apologetic smile on her lips. Her fingers tapped lightly on the table.
“I shouldn’t have ignored you without a word these past few days.”
As soon as those words were spoken, Gu Jinhua’s hand slowed. Her nose stung, and a wave of soft-hearted grievance suddenly overwhelmed her. Her breathing grew uneven. She pressed her lips together. Even though the food still smelled delicious, her appetite had almost completely disappeared.
Zheng Xiuxue hated seeing her like this. She knew Gu Jinhua wasn’t an actress, but spending time around film sets had rubbed off on her, and she had picked up a few acting skills. Still, whenever she saw her look so vulnerable, it tugged at her heart.
She began to panic, realizing she might have taken her teasing too far and was now trying to make up for it.
“But did you forget what day is coming soon? These past few days—”
“I’m full.”
Before she could finish, Gu Jinhua pushed her plate away and got up to leave.
Zheng Xiuxue froze for a moment, then quickly jumped to her feet and followed.
Outside the mall, the night was hazy and dim. Gu Jinhua walked quickly, avoiding people as she headed toward her car. Even in heels, Zheng Xiuxue kept up, her pace hurried and anxious.
“Jinhua!”
“Gu Jinhua!”
When had the proud Miss Zheng ever had to chase someone like this? Thankfully, Gu Jinhua soon unlocked the car door, and Zheng Xiuxue rushed into the passenger seat, slightly out of breath.
The car was parked in a quiet and secluded area. Zheng Xiuxue was out of breath from chasing after it. She had already been feeling a bit hungry, and when she got into the car, she lost her balance and almost fell onto the seat. Fortunately, she was caught firmly by a pair of steady hands.
She fell right into Gu Jinhua’s warm embrace.
They were so close that their breathing intertwined. It was impossible to tell whose breath brushed against whose face first, or who leaned in for the kiss. But once their lips touched, neither wanted to let go.
Zheng Xiuxue ended up pressing her entire body against Gu Jinhua. Her breath was hot and shallow. She felt Gu Jinhua’s hands wandering across her body, which made her nervous. She quickly pushed her away.
Gu Jinhua withdrew from the kiss, reluctantly pulling back. She licked the corner of her lips as if savoring the moment. Her breathing was heavy as she asked softly, “What’s wrong?”
Only then did Zheng Xiuxue realize how dark it was inside the car. The curtains had been drawn down. Gu Jinhua must have prepared everything in advance while waiting for her to arrive. The car had been set to autopilot, and the destination was clearly Gu Jinhua’s home.
Zheng Xiuxue was no naive girl. She could tell exactly what was going on. She had truly believed that Gu Jinhua had been angry and had been worried about how to comfort her. But now it was clear she had walked right into a setup.
“You…”
“Shh.”
The vehicle shifted slightly. It was too dark to see clearly what was happening. Gu Jinhua reached over and pulled a blanket from the backseat, gently covering her. Under Zheng Xiuxue’s slightly annoyed gaze, she leaned in again. Her voice was soft and tender, completely unlike how an Alpha usually sounded.
“You still haven’t apologized for making me upset. I just wanted to celebrate my birthday with you. If you wanted to keep it a surprise, that would have been fine. But why did you have to ignore me completely?”
Zheng Xiuxue looked slightly flustered and quickly explained.
“I didn’t plan to ignore you. I knew you were really busy that week and you even said you had writer’s block. I figured I could take care of the preparations myself and surprise you later. I didn’t expect you to actually get upset…”
She had not intended to start a fight. Her plan had been to wait until the birthday came, then reconcile with Gu Jinhua and celebrate. That way she would not have to deal with her complaining every day.
Besides, when Gu Jinhua was struggling with her writing, she often got irritable and hated being disturbed. Zheng Xiuxue had always understood that. After all, screenwriting was a stressful job.
But she had not anticipated the emotions that came with their time apart. When they were constantly around each other, everything felt normal. But once separated, she began to feel the kind of deep longing often described in romance novels.
If this had happened in the past, Zheng Xiuxue never would have admitted she could feel something like that for Gu Jinhua. But now, hearing her speak in such a soft and emotional voice, her heart completely melted.
“I thought you ran off with someone else…”
Gu Jinhua’s voice grew quieter and more fragile. Toward the end, her tone even sounded like she was about to cry. Zheng Xiuxue had never encountered an Alpha who acted so clingy. Seeing her like this, she completely panicked. She dropped all her stubbornness, quickly pulling out a tissue to wipe her tears.
But before she could wipe her face, Gu Jinhua caught her hand.
A familiar and gentle scent filled the air. It was Gu Jinhua’s pheromones.
Zheng Xiuxue’s heartbeat quickened. She leaned back against the seat for support.
This Alpha was actually using her pheromones to tease her.
“I really did have writer’s block,” Gu Jinhua said softly in the darkness. Her lips found the edge of Zheng Xiuxue’s mouth and kissed her again. The small gasp that escaped was quickly swallowed.
“But now that you came to find me, I finally feel inspired again. The part I was stuck on, only you can help me write it.”
