- Chapter 78 - Anqi’s Side Story
When Xu Xiaoqi slowly regained consciousness from the haze, the first thing she saw was that familiar face.
The woman carried a faint scent of perfume. It was not a fragrance Xu Xiaoqi particularly liked, but she still breathed it in deeply, almost greedily, as though trying to hold onto every trace of her.
In Xu Xiaoqi’s memory, Yu Peirong would have blushed under such closeness. But this time, the woman simply looked slightly surprised and gently avoided her. She was not rude, but there was a polite distance in her manner.
“Miss Xu, how are you feeling now?”
That was the first thing Yu Peirong said to her.
And it marked the very moment Xu Xiaoqi felt like she had been pushed into a bottomless abyss.
She sat in a daze for several minutes. Once she was sure her memory was not failing her, a wave of sadness rose and engulfed her completely.
She had thought her feelings were already obvious, made clear through every word and action. She believed it would have been impossible to misunderstand what she meant. But now, it seemed as if none of it had reached her.
Or perhaps, it had reached her, and Yu Peirong’s feelings were simply not the same.
Compared to before, there was a bit more gentleness in her tone, but that gentleness came with caution. It was measured, restrained, and kept her at a distance.
She asked about her physical condition, as if following a checklist. Xu Xiaoqi still felt disoriented and even began to doubt whether her mind was playing tricks on her again. But the truth was right in front of her.
When Yu Peirong finally stood up and turned to leave, Xu Xiaoqi also rose to her feet. It was then, upon meeting someone’s anxious and uncertain gaze, that her heartbeat suddenly changed.
That girl had introduced herself as Ye An.
**
Ye An had known Xu Xiaoqi for quite a while.
At first, she did not think too much about it. She simply enjoyed chatting with the person on the other side of the screen. Every conversation left her feeling relaxed, and all the frustration she had bottled up because of Yu Shang and Yu Litian would quietly disappear.
That unexpected online encounter with Xu Xiaoqi might have been the best thing that had ever happened to her.
But the word “like” felt too extravagant for someone like her.
Ye An’s biological mother had passed away when she was very young. She had no clear memories of her, only the knowledge that her mother had left behind an inheritance for her to manage. Before she turned eighteen, Yu Litian had a long and serious talk with her. Once she gave her consent, the family company Yishui was handed over to Yu Shang.
There were times when Ye An truly felt jealous of Yu Shang.
But Yu Shang had never treated her especially well or terribly either. Compared to Yu Litian, who was unpredictable and emotionally distant, Yu Shang at least made the effort to acknowledge her presence. For a girl who had grown up lonely, receiving even a little attention from her family after giving up control of the company felt like a blessing.
Even so, if she wanted to be seen and heard by her father, she had to act like Lu Zhiyao. She had to become a charming and reckless Alpha.
At one social event, one of her so-called friends introduced her to a refined-looking executive surnamed Wang. He was an Alpha who held a little power and seemed to assume she was just like him. He handed her a room card to a private suite, the kind used by people in their social circle for casual and chaotic hookups. The card was ice-cold in her hand, and her stomach churned at the thought.
From that day on, she kept her interactions with people like that on the surface only. She smiled, she nodded, but never allowed herself to cross the line. Deep down, she simply could not bring herself to go through with it.
It was during one of those nights, after she had drunk too much, that she happened to meet Xu Xiaoqi online.
At the time, Ye An had no idea that the person she was talking to would one day become a near-celebrity, just one step away from stardom. She only knew that speaking with her felt easy and genuine. Their conversation held no hidden agendas, and it felt light and comforting.
After realizing she had developed feelings, Ye An spent an entire night wide awake.
She had never thought about love before. She had never let herself even consider the possibility. But this feeling came over her like a tide, strong and relentless, washing over her completely.
But by the next morning, she forced herself to calm down.
The more she cared, the more she felt restrained and the clearer she saw the complexity of the world she lived in.
She truly liked Xu Xiaoqi. And because of that, she could not allow herself to pull Xu Xiaoqi into the mess that was her life, a world full of danger and uncertainty.
Once she understood that, Ye An began to distance herself deliberately.
She limited their interactions. When Xu Xiaoqi reached out, she pretended she was unavailable. When she had to reply, she used short and cold messages, trying to push her away little by little.
Unlike what she had expected, Xu Xiaoqi quickly sensed something was off and called her directly. Her voice was clear and straightforward as she asked, “What’s wrong?”
That was the first time Ye An had heard Xu Xiaoqi’s voice.
She sounded like someone born to sing. Her tone was naturally beautiful, smooth and soothing, and in the quiet stillness of the night, it gently broke through the fragile wall Ye An had built around her heart.
That night, they stayed connected on voice chat until dawn.
Xu Xiaoqi softly hummed the original version of a song she was working on called Night Voyage Star, and they discussed how to create a demo. In truth, Xu Xiaoqi had always been underestimated. Her music production skills were exceptional, no less than any of the top producers in the industry.
After listening to the demo version, Ye An, already emotionally stirred by the melody, offered her some feedback. The two of them began to refine the song together, working seamlessly, and eventually met in person. From there, they developed a connection that was subtle and lingering, filled with ambiguity but never fully defined.
It was beautiful while it lasted.
Until it was all destroyed by Yu Shang.
After Xu Xiaoqi’s memories were thrown into chaos, she was admitted to a private care facility. From that point on, even visiting her required all of Ye An’s courage.
Not long after, she officially became Ye An.
She had once thought those memories from the past would be buried forever, unable to serve as a bond between them any longer. Xu Xiaoqi never brought it up again, but Ye An continued to remember all of her little habits. Every time they met, she could not help but quietly express the joy she still felt, no matter how hard she tried to hide it.
One evening, Xu Xiaoqi got drunk.
Ye An brought her home. She had intended to leave, but just as she turned to go, Xu Xiaoqi reached out and grabbed the edge of her shirt, pulling her back.
Ye An nearly jumped in surprise.
She caught the faint scent of pheromones filling the air and quickly realized it was the natural release that came with an Omega being intoxicated. She had smelled it before. She liked it very much. But Ye An was probably the most timid Alpha in the world and had never dared to entertain even the smallest inappropriate thought about this Omega.
But in the very next moment, Xu Xiaoqi took hold of her hand.
The warmth she had imagined over and over in her mind had finally become real.
In the darkness, Xu Xiaoqi’s breath fell softly against her cheek. Her gaze was direct and unwavering, her eyes locked on Ye An’s with startling clarity.
“This time,” she whispered, “where do you plan to leave me behind and go?”
