As they left, Qi Xiyao pressed her lips together tightly. She looked as if something was weighing heavily on her mind.
Yu Peirong watched her quietly. She didn’t speak until she noticed the growing sadness in Qi Xiyao’s expression. Her voice was soft when she finally asked,
“Are you feeling jealous?”
Then she quickly added an explanation after seeing the look on Qi Xiyao’s face.
“I didn’t say anything important to Xu Xiaoqi.”
“If I had to say something,” she continued, “it’s just that her attitude toward me felt a little strange.”
Qi Xiyao wasn’t actually thinking about that, but when Yu Peirong brought it up, she responded with a question of her own.
“What do you mean?”
“I just feel like maybe she’s interested in me a little,” Yu Peirong muttered. Then she quickly raised both hands to show her innocence.
“But don’t worry, sweetheart. I would never do anything with her.”
She was very satisfied with Qi Xiyao as her partner and would never cross any moral lines.
Qi Xiyao couldn’t help but laugh.
“I know.”
Of course she knew Yu Peirong wouldn’t do such a thing, but hearing her say it out loud still felt different. It brought a quiet reassurance.
Yu Peirong did think Xu Xiaoqi’s behavior was strange. At first, she had seemed unusually enthusiastic, with a kind of visible shyness and nervousness that made Yu Peirong feel slightly uncomfortable. But after a few replies, Xu Xiaoqi’s attitude shifted. She seemed calmer, as if she had stopped trying to look through Yu Peirong to see someone else.
Had she mistaken her for another person?
Yu Peirong didn’t dig too deep into it, because she was soon swept up in her next big project.
The girl group talent show, a partnership with a television network, had officially started. As one of the main planners, Yu Peirong was constantly running back and forth to the venue.
They were working with Apple TV, one of the most influential networks in recent years, known for launching fresh talent through these kinds of shows. On opening day, every seat was filled, the audience packed wall to wall.
On the first day of filming, Yu Peirong made a special appearance to support the event. Since she had been showing up regularly, the young contestants weren’t afraid of her. They all knew that President Yu was surprisingly approachable and even joked around with her.
One of the mentors, a woman named Ali with a warm and outgoing personality, immediately wrapped an arm around Yu Peirong when she arrived. The two walked arm in arm, laughing and discussing the upcoming show.
“Peirong, tell me secretly, which contestant are you most excited about?”
There were several promising girls this season. The most eye-catching ones were a girl named Xia Shishi and a mixed-race trainee with a long English name.
Xia Shishi had previously debuted in a small group that disbanded. She came from a smaller company and was now aiming to make it into Yishui’s top tier. She trained with all her energy and determination. Her last group had failed due to company mismanagement, but her skills were solid. She already showed potential as the center pick.
The mixed-race girl was a dark horse. She had a tall, fit figure and had studied street dance for over ten years. Her foundation was strong, and her learning ability was excellent. She had also trained privately in vocals, so her singing was quite good. Her only disadvantage was her unique appearance, which could be polarizing.
But Yu Peirong was focused on someone completely different.
She looked across the group and pointed at a girl who wasn’t particularly noticeable.
“I’m placing my bet on her.”
“Feng Shuyi?” Ali gasped.
That girl was undeniably pretty, but in terms of strength, she was far behind the top-tier contestants. There were only seven debut spots, and even ranking in the top ten would be difficult for her.
Yu Peirong smiled and didn’t explain.
If you judged based on skills alone, Feng Shuyi didn’t have much chance of debuting. Her basics were shaky, and unless she could improve drastically in a short time, she would never catch up to the others.
But there was more to it.
Yu Peirong’s smile deepened slightly.
She had looked into every trainee’s background and discovered that the seemingly unremarkable Feng Shuyi had strong connections with Lu Zhiyao.
Lu Zhiyao came from an influential business family. If she were being honest, even someone like Yu Litian would love to curry favor with the Lu family.
After all, the Lus secretly owned an underground gambling empire. If they wanted to make one of their own trainees debut, it would be incredibly easy.
Soon after the show began, the self-introduction and seat selection segment took place. Like other talent shows, it followed the typical format. Feng Shuyi chose the eighth seat. During her interview, her eyes sparkled, and her expression was sincere.
She said,
“I chose the eighth seat to set a baseline for myself. It’s also a chance to improve. I know there are many talented girls here, and I might not make it into the final group, but I will give it everything I have. I want to make sure everyone can see me.”
Yu Peirong scoffed inwardly. Her interest in the program faded entirely as she listened to the act.
It was a live broadcast, and she felt her phone vibrate in her pocket. She stepped backstage to check the call.
The screen showed the caller ID: Lu Zhiyao.
Yu Peirong frowned.
She no longer felt such strong resentment toward Lu Zhiyao after losing her memory, but something about her still felt dangerous. As soon as she answered, Lu Zhiyao’s excited voice rang in her ear.
“Peirong, what do you think of the gift I prepared for you this time?”
Yu Peirong asked instinctively, “What gift?”
The laughter from the other end of the line made her scalp tingle. She felt a wave of nausea even before hearing the next words. After a moment, Lu Zhiyao said playfully,
“I know you saw her. Do you want me to send her over after the show? She’s really good in bed. I promise she’ll take good care of you.”
Yu Peirong’s expression changed. It took all her restraint not to curse. She ended the call abruptly and blocked the number.
That woman was completely insane.
What the hell was wrong with her?
She didn’t want to see Feng Shuyi again and was preparing to leave the venue. But soon, her phone rang again. It was another unfamiliar number.
She answered, only to hear the same voice.
It was Lu Zhiyao again.
Her tone turned cold.
“What do you want from me?”
“I don’t want anything,” Lu Zhiyao replied sweetly.
“Didn’t your father ask you to come meet me before? Oh, but now that he’s lying in a hospital bed, he can’t control you anymore. Is this how you show respect to your elders?”
Lu Zhiyao’s tone had always been strange and exaggerated. Even through the phone, Yu Peirong felt a wave of nausea rise in her stomach. She could not understand why an Alpha would choose to speak in such an affected and artificial way.
When Yu Peirong remained silent, Lu Zhiyao tested the waters and asked,
“Why aren’t you saying anything? Don’t tell me you’re still hung up on Qi Xiyao.”
Yu Peirong’s lips tightened into a firm line. Her grip on the phone unconsciously tightened.
“I’ll send you the private room number at Qihang Hotel. Let’s meet.”
**
On the way there, Yu Peirong sent a message to Qi Xiyao, telling her not to wait up that evening.
She leaned against the car window, watching the snow fall gently outside. Her heart felt heavy, and a quiet anger simmered beneath the surface.
Without her memories, she had no idea why this woman was so obsessed with her, to the point of delusion. Lu Zhiyao was born into wealth and privilege, yet she behaved without a shred of dignity. It was baffling.
Soon, the car pulled up at the hotel. Yu Peirong stepped out, heels clicking on the floor as she walked into the private dining room.
As an Alpha with a strong constitution, she wore only a thin down jacket over a cashmere sweater despite the snow. Winters in this city were harsh, with temperatures dropping below minus twenty degrees. The air could freeze water in seconds.
Inside the private room, the heating was on. The warm air rushed out the moment she opened the door.
Lu Zhiyao had arrived early. She was undeniably attractive, with sharper, more striking features than Yu Peirong. Her bold makeup made her look seductive and glamorous. But the moment she saw Yu Peirong, she deliberately changed her tone, raising her voice in a mock-sweet way, imitating the coyness of an Omega.
Yu Peirong had always suspected there was something mentally off about this woman. Seeing her behave like this again made her stomach turn.
“You finally agreed to see me. I thought your Uncle Yu Litian lying in a hospital bed meant he had lost control over you.” Lu Zhiyao chuckled softly. “How is Uncle doing, by the way?”
Her words sounded polite, but the glint in her eyes revealed a twisted sense of satisfaction.
Yu Peirong did not want to waste time with her. After sitting down, she asked the waiter for a cup of hot water. It was the only thing she could force herself to drink.
She looked up at Lu Zhiyao. Her eyes were cold, like a layer of frost that would never melt.
“If you have something to say, say it. Stop being disgusting. There’s no need to pretend.”
Lu Zhiyao clicked her tongue in amusement.
“So it’s true. You’ve really fallen for Qi Xiyao, haven’t you? Are you an Alpha or an Omega, Peirong? Actually, never mind.” Her lips curled into a sly smile. She tapped her fingers on the table as she lowered her voice.
“If that’s what you want, I’m having a party this weekend at Xin’an Residence. Why don’t you bring your little Qi Xiyao along?”
Yu Peirong understood what she meant. Her expression immediately darkened.
“I don’t know what I ever said to give you the wrong idea. But I’m warning you now. Do not even think about laying a finger on Qi Xiyao. I don’t care if this is your own twisted idea or something that came from Yu Shang or Yu Litian. You need to give it up now.”
Lu Zhiyao forced a laugh. She reached out, trying to touch Yu Peirong’s wrist. This was something she often did with others, a habit born from years of getting whatever she wanted. She had always believed that, with her family name and connections, she could touch anyone she pleased. Gender and secondary gender never mattered to her. No one had ever dared to resist.
She wore the smug smile of someone who believed the game was already won.
“Peirong, I think you’ve changed. Is that Omega really so good that you’re willing to pass up a huge contract just to keep her around? Now that Yu Shang has fallen, you could inherit everything from Yu Litian. You’re supposed to be his successor. A powerful match like ours could dominate the industry. Don’t tell me you still don’t understand what Yu Litian has planned for you.”
Before she could finish, Yu Peirong stood up without a word. She picked up her glass of hot water and threw it straight at Lu Zhiyao’s face.
Lu Zhiyao let out a sharp scream as the hot water splashed onto her skin.
