- Chapter 52 - Xu Xiaoqi
The air in the hospital carried an unpleasant, sharp smell of disinfectant. The VIP ward was quiet. On either side of the hallway stretched clean, white corridors where nurses moved quietly back and forth.
When Yu Peirong and Qi Xiyao arrived, they saw a tall woman sitting on a bench outside the ward. She wore a cap and was slowly sipping from a pouch of energy drink.
It was a common hospital product, the kind used to help Alphas replenish their strength. Despite the plain packaging, it looked oddly elegant in her hands. Her fingers were long and delicate, but her face showed little expression. When she heard footsteps, she looked up, and her expression instantly changed.
Ye An had always felt a sense of nervousness and fear around Qi Xiyao. Now, as she looked up, she immediately dropped the half-finished drink. Her eyes filled with unease, like a student waiting to be scolded by a strict teacher.
Yu Peirong had never seen anyone react to Qi Xiyao in such a strange way. Curious, she looked at Ye An more closely.
The woman looked familiar, but Yu Peirong could not quite place where they had met. Perhaps it was just a passing resemblance. Still, her gaze must have come across as a bit intrusive, because Ye An quickly avoided eye contact.
“Is she stable now?”
Qi Xiyao was the one to break the awkward silence. Without even realizing it, she had begun to take on a kind of quiet authority in front of Ye An. This was something she never imagined could happen before.
Ye An, who used to bark orders and speak to her with harsh words, now looked shy and timid. It felt unfamiliar and slightly unreal to Qi Xiyao.
Even though she knew this change in Ye An was not entirely because of her, it was still strangely fascinating to see.
Ye An nodded and answered respectfully.
“Miss Xu is no longer in a dangerous state. She is stable now and not showing any aggression. If you want to see her, it is okay to go in.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Qi Xiyao looked toward Yu Peirong.
Yu Peirong nodded in agreement, indicating they could now go in and speak with the patient.
Qi Xiyao had already explained Xu Xiaoqi’s situation in detail to Yu Peirong. However, she had deliberately left out one important detail: the emotional history between Xu Xiaoqi and her original self.
Now that she knew her original self had become Ye An, it made sense that Ye An should take responsibility for that complicated mess.
Qi Xiyao also did not want Xu Xiaoqi to become involved with Yu Peirong in that way. But only she knew that Ye An was once her. If she suddenly spoke about this bizarre situation, it would likely only harm the recovering patient’s mental state.
And really, who would even believe such an unbelievable thing? If she blurted it out, she might be the one ending up in a psychiatric hospital. That thought made her chuckle to herself.
With that, she and Yu Peirong pushed open the door together.
The soft winter sunlight poured into the room.
Her original self had arranged everything well for Xu Xiaoqi, placing her in the best room on the entire floor. The space had excellent lighting all year round. It was comfortable and perfect for recovery.
But during the worst of her mental episodes, Xu Xiaoqi had drawn the black curtains tightly closed. No matter how good the environment was, she preferred to keep herself in complete darkness, hiding away from any light.
Now, Xu Xiaoqi sat on the bed, wearing a simple white sweater. Her figure was thin from the long recovery, but for the first time, her eyes, once empty and dull, looked lively again as if light had finally returned to them.
She had always been a beautiful woman, but after her recovery, her whole presence was completely different from before.
When she saw Yu Peirong, a flicker of complex emotion passed through her eyes. At first, there was open joy, but that quickly shifted into uncertainty.
From her reaction, Qi Xiyao could tell that Ye An had not told Xu Xiaoqi the truth about her identity.
But since the patient had only just recovered, she probably should not be exposed to too much emotional stress. Qi Xiyao convinced herself that it was best to hold off on revealing anything. Still, it left her feeling just a little uncomfortable.
Yu Peirong remained completely professional. She lowered her gaze and politely asked about Xu Xiaoqi’s health. Then she calmly explained everything Qi Xiyao had previously told her.
She also played the audio recording.
Qi Xiyao and Yu Peirong both expected Xu Xiaoqi to be shocked or even furious. But instead, she remained calm. She only let out a small sigh.
After a moment of silence, she looked up at Yu Peirong. Her pale face wore a faint and distant smile.
“So you figured it out. They never noticed when I recorded it. After I left, I set the audio to be sent automatically. It went to an email address they didn’t know about. It’s a good thing they never found it, or this whole situation would never have been resolved.”
Yu Peirong was briefly confused. But once she connected this with what Qi Xiyao had told her, realization hit. Her expression shifted with surprise.
The recording that helped bring down Yu Shang was made by Xu Xiaoqi?
“Back then, I was drifting in and out of awareness. One day, when I was clear-headed, I brought a recorder with me. I never thought it would actually be useful.”
Recalling those memories was clearly painful, but somehow, Xu Xiaoqi could now speak about them calmly in front of Yu Peirong.
She seemed like a completely different person compared to her former, chaotic self.
“Later on, they probably realized something was off. When your mental state began to deteriorate too, they used that as a chance to check my emails and messages. But they did not find anything. I destroyed the recorder afterward. I was afraid they would discover it and make things worse. Thankfully…”
She stopped speaking there, but Yu Peirong seemed to understand the rest.
“Can I speak to you in private?”
Xu Xiaoqi’s voice trembled slightly. She looked at Yu Peirong with a mixture of hope and nervousness. The emotion in her eyes was subtle, but impossible to miss.
Yu Peirong instinctively turned to look at Qi Xiyao, who nodded and gave her a small smile.
Not long ago, Qi Xiyao might have hesitated. But now, she realized she trusted Yu Peirong. She also believed that no matter what Xu Xiaoqi felt, it would not be met with any overly romantic response.
More importantly, Xu Xiaoqi’s feelings were never meant for her in the first place. They belonged to someone else. And there were still things she needed to say to Ye An.
With that in mind, Qi Xiyao quietly closed the door behind her, leaving the room to the two of them. She turned and walked down the hallway where Ye An was standing nervously.
Ye An had been pacing anxiously, but the moment she saw Qi Xiyao come out, she rushed over, looking both excited and tense.
“How is Xiaoqi?”
“She’s doing fine,” Qi Xiyao answered honestly. Then she looked directly at Ye An and asked the question she had been holding back the whole time.
“If you’re so worried about her, why haven’t you told her the truth about what happened to you?”
Ye An’s face stiffened. She didn’t respond.
“What are you afraid of?”
Qi Xiyao studied her carefully. She realized that Ye An’s new appearance was actually quite attractive. Maybe not as radiant as Yu Peirong, but definitely still beautiful.
And she truly believed that Xu Xiaoqi wasn’t the type to judge based on appearances. From everything she had observed, it was clear that Ye An and Xu Xiaoqi had been in love with each other. It had always been mutual.
There was a ninety-nine percent chance they could be happy together, if only one of them took the first step.
Ye An hesitated for a moment. Her voice softened and sounded unsure.
“Do you really think I should tell her something like that at a time like this?”
Qi Xiyao pressed her lips together and fell into silence, thinking deeply.
That period had been devastating for her original self. The emotional pain she had suffered might have been just as severe as what Xu Xiaoqi experienced.
Xu Xiaoqi had been the only light in her darkness, someone who understood her, someone she had loved in secret. It was a quiet, unspoken love, something she longed for but never dared to hope would happen.
Her crush had been hurt because of her. During the peak of her career, Xu Xiaoqi suffered a cruel and inhumane attack. The original self had always been emotionally fragile, raised under the pressure and manipulation of the Yu family. They had emotionally abused her for years, leaving her with little strength to withstand pain.
When things became unbearable, she had chosen to run away.
But now, what could Ye An possibly say to Xu Xiaoqi?
Could she really admit that the reason she was punished was because she would eventually forcefully mark Qi Xiyao? That she would become just like those who had hurt Xu Xiaoqi, someone who would destroy an innocent Omega’s life?
Was she supposed to confess that if she hadn’t become Ye An, she would have turned into the very person Xu Xiaoqi hated most?
Of course she couldn’t.
What troubled Ye An wasn’t just whether or not she should be honest with Xu Xiaoqi. What truly weighed on her was the guilt she could not get past.
She had no feelings for Qi Xiyao. From beginning to end, there had only been one person in her heart, and that was Xu Xiaoqi. She admitted she had said cruel things in the past. That had been wrong. But she had never meant to cross any unforgivable line.
Still, she was already someone who had fallen. Was it right to selfishly pull Xu Xiaoqi down with her? Should she disturb the peace Xu Xiaoqi had finally managed to find?
Ye An’s head throbbed. It felt like her whole body was splitting apart. One part of her wanted to tell the truth, while the other begged her to walk away and leave things as they were.
While she stood frozen in silence, the door to the hospital room opened.
Both Qi Xiyao and Ye An looked up instinctively and turned toward the doorway.
Yu Peirong stepped out, her face calm and composed.
“Shall we go?”
Whatever she and Xu Xiaoqi had discussed inside, she didn’t say. Xu Xiaoqi didn’t come out to see them off. The room remained quiet. Clearly, she hadn’t been shaken by their conversation. Smiling gently, Yu Peirong looked up and reached for Qi Xiyao’s hand. She gave her a reassuring look, silently encouraging her to say goodbye to Ye An.
After watching them leave, Ye An could no longer hold back. She quietly pushed the door open again.
Inside, she saw Xu Xiaoqi sitting on the bed once more. Just moments ago, she had seemed so bright and full of life. Now she sat in silence, her figure thin and lonely, exactly like she used to be.
The sight pierced through Ye An’s heart. It felt as if an invisible hand had clenched her chest.
Her eyes suddenly blurred with heat. She hadn’t even realized she was crying.
For someone who had endured years of emotional abuse from the Yu family without ever shedding a tear, her eyes were now red.
