- Chapter 48 - Stirred Emotions
Qi Xiyao’s face turned red in an instant.
She had only been half-joking earlier, thinking it would be fun to tease Yu Peirong by calling herself her wife. She never expected the woman to take it seriously.
When she first began to suspect that Yu Peirong was not the same person she used to be, Qi Xiyao had already figured out that she was most likely an Alpha. She was probably pretending to be an Omega to gain Qi Xiyao’s trust.
During that entire time, Yu Peirong had never once taken advantage of her supposed Omega identity. Even during Qi Xiyao’s heat, when the opportunity presented itself so clearly, she still chose not to act.
Qi Xiyao never felt offended by this. In fact, she found it rather sweet. Yu Peirong was respectful, well-mannered, and showed strong self-control. The thought made Qi Xiyao feel warm inside.
But the truth remained. Qi Xiyao was an Omega, and Yu Peirong was an Alpha. If they showered together, there was a risk that their pheromones could react and something uncontrollable might happen.
Qi Xiyao admitted that she had strong feelings for Yu Peirong, but she was not ready to be marked by her, especially while she was still dealing with amnesia. Things would be awkward once Yu Peirong regained her memories. There were still many things Qi Xiyao had not yet explained. She wanted them to have an honest conversation before entering a relationship.
And more importantly…
Qi Xiyao bit her lip.
She did have feelings for Rong-jie, but even during her heat, Yu Peirong was able to stay calm and do nothing. That showed not only her self-control and good manners, but it also made Qi Xiyao wonder if her pheromones simply were not that attractive to her.
At the very least, they had not been strong enough to affect Yu Peirong’s judgment.
Qi Xiyao thought for a moment. She pressed one hand lightly against the bathroom door. When she felt Yu Peirong stop pushing from the other side, she knew her message had been received. Yu Peirong did not force her way in. Instead, her confused eyes looked softly toward her through the frosted glass.
Qi Xiyao spoke gently but firmly.
“That’s not allowed.”
“Why not?” Yu Peirong’s voice carried a hint of surprise and hurt. “Haven’t I already marked you?”
Qi Xiyao fell silent. She hadn’t.
Not knowing how to explain it properly, she suddenly thought of something and quickly said,
“Actually, I forgot to tell you, Rong-jie. We’re only engaged for now. We moved in together to see if we’re really compatible.”
Even as she said it, Qi Xiyao felt incredibly embarrassed. Her face flushed red. Luckily, she was standing behind the frosted glass door, so Yu Peirong could not see her expression clearly.
She was not sure if it was right to say something like that to someone with amnesia. But judging by Yu Peirong’s reaction, she seemed to accept the idea of having a wife without much hesitation.
“So before we get officially married, I haven’t really considered being marked.”
The Marriage Law had strict regulations for Alphas. An Alpha could mark multiple Omegas, but an Omega could only be deeply marked once. Unless it was a temporary mark, which faded after a few days, a deep mark could only be removed by injecting medicine directly into the gland. That kind of procedure was said to be as painful as a surgical abortion without anesthesia.
Most Omegas only allowed temporary marks during heat before marriage. They usually waited until the wedding to allow a permanent one.
Yu Peirong had not forgotten those biological facts. She nodded, the blush fading slightly from her face. Realizing she had gone too far, she softly said, “Sorry,” and closed the bathroom door for Qi Xiyao.
When Qi Xiyao finished showering and walked out, she saw Yu Peirong sitting on the couch, flipping through the TV channels with the remote, trying to find something to watch.
She had landed on a historical drama that one of the platforms had recently been heavily promoting. But the moment the show started playing, Qi Xiyao reached out and grabbed her hand.
Fresh from the shower, the Omega carried a soft, sweet scent of orchid and grape from her body wash. The refreshing fragrance reached out and covered the citrus tea scent that usually lingered on her skin.
Qi Xiyao’s long hair was still wet. Her eyes sparkled, and her voice was soft, though a bit awkward.
She spoke with a natural pout.
“That drama stars my nemesis. I really don’t want to see her. Could you change it?”
On the screen, a woman wearing a phoenix coronet was smiling brightly. Her makeup was heavy, and her narrow eyes looked fierce and proud. Yu Peirong quickly exited the program, returning the TV to standby. She looked up at Qi Xiyao with a serious expression.
“Did she bully you?”
Qi Xiyao hesitated. Not exactly.
Before joining Yishui Entertainment, she had also auditioned at another large company, Yeting Entertainment. Yishui mainly focused on solo music artists, while Qi Xiyao wanted to pursue acting, so Yeting had seemed like a better fit.
But the CEO of Yeting had a habit of acting superior and treated newcomers with a cold and suppressive attitude. Outwardly, the company appeared gracious and charming, but that was far from the truth. So Qi Xiyao left without hesitation and signed with Yishui.
During her short time at Yeting, an actress named Ding Xi, who had a bad temper and liked to pick on weaker people, noticed her. Around that time, Ding Xi had lost a role and saw Qi Xiyao talking to the CEO. She mocked her, suggesting that she had slept her way into an opportunity.
Qi Xiyao had never told Yu Peirong any of this before. At first, she felt the timing was not right. She was also afraid it would make her seem petty and leave a bad impression on Rong-jie.
But now…
She sat down on the couch, leaning gently against Yu Peirong, and looked into her eyes. There was a quiet fire in them, a smoldering anger on her behalf.
Since losing her memory, Yu Peirong had changed. The way she interacted with Qi Xiyao felt different now. Qi Xiyao was not sure if it was because she called herself her wife, or if this version of Yu Peirong, stripped of past burdens, was the real one.
She felt more at ease being around her than ever before.
Before, Rong-jie always suppressed her thoughts and emotions. Qi Xiyao could never tell what she was really thinking.
But now, it felt like she was seeing the true Yu Peirong. The one who had always hidden behind a careful mask. The one who had never let herself relax.
“But that’s all in the past,” Qi Xiyao said softly. She smiled and turned off the TV, letting the room fall into darkness.
“Let’s go to sleep. You haven’t been resting well lately. It’s time to relax.”
Qi Xiyao nodded and stood up with Yu Peirong. They walked back to their separate rooms in the large house. Everyone had their own space, and the two of them had never shared a bed. But just as Qi Xiyao was about to close her door, Yu Peirong called out to her.
Her tone was a mix of pleading and playful affection. She stepped closer, her breath warm and damp as it brushed against Qi Xiyao’s cheek. She lowered her head slightly, her voice soft and low, carrying an unmistakable hint of intimacy.
“Darling, can I have a goodnight kiss?”
Qi Xiyao’s face turned red again, and her heart began to pound uncontrollably. She had felt nothing all day, even while discussing business with Ye An, but now everything was in chaos. Every word and action from Yu Peirong seemed to hit her directly in the heart, filling her with a sweet, overwhelming warmth.
She had never been in a relationship before. Watching other people act clingy had always felt awkward and over-the-top to her. But now, even though she and Yu Peirong had not taken the step of marking each other, she already felt completely flustered by her.
At this point, it was no longer about Alpha or Omega. There were no pheromones involved. Looking into those bright eyes in the dark, Qi Xiyao leaned forward instinctively.
Yu Peirong gave her a gentle peck on the lips. It was brief and light, barely more than a touch, and then she pulled away.

The next day, the two of them talked about her amnesia and agreed not to tell anyone else for the time being.
Meanwhile, the police informed Yu Peirong that Yu Shang had escaped. The case would have to be delayed until he was found and brought in for questioning.
Fortunately, Yu Peirong had not lost her intelligence. She was still sharp, just as she had always been. After spending half a day in the office and listening to Qi Xiyao’s explanations, she quickly gained a solid understanding of how the company operated.
She guessed that she must have been a decisive and efficient executive in the past. By noon, she had already finished handling the tasks on her desk. When Qi Xiyao came by to check on her, she found Yu Peirong going over the company’s accounts herself. She was wearing gold-rimmed glasses, sitting at her desk, calmly highlighting and making notes.
After hearing what Qi Xiyao had told her earlier, she had begun reviewing the financial reports. She started by pulling up records from recent years. It was a massive workload, so she filtered out the key parts to handle herself and handed the rest to the secretary.
When the secretary walked in, the woman who had just been cheerful and playful transformed instantly. Her posture changed, and her gaze behind the glasses became calm and distant. Her tone turned businesslike, her manner polite but firm, radiating a quiet authority.
The secretary, eager to prove himself after a recent promotion, came in with his head held high. But even with the heater on in the office, he still felt a chill from his boss’s serious demeanor.
Yu Peirong’s red lips parted slightly as she issued clear instructions and responded to his questions in just a few words. After he respectfully left, she relaxed and returned to her usual gentle demeanor with Qi Xiyao. Her voice softened as she asked what she wanted for dinner.
She motioned for Qi Xiyao to come over, and when she did, Yu Peirong pulled her into her arms.
Caught off guard, Qi Xiyao landed on her lap, her back resting against Yu Peirong’s chest. Her body immediately felt hot, and she quickly turned the heat down a few degrees.
The room was bright, and the light fell softly across Yu Peirong’s face. Qi Xiyao was so close she could see the fine golden hairs on her skin. Yu Peirong’s breath fell gently against the back of her neck, sending a tingling sensation through her nerves.
On a normal day, it might not have meant much. But now…
As that warm breath brushed her skin, Qi Xiyao suddenly felt a wave of heat rise at the back of her neck. She quickly stood up, gasping for air.
Yu Peirong looked at her in surprise, clearly confused and concerned. But Qi Xiyao’s heart was racing, and her mind was growing foggy. Even her gaze had gone slightly unfocused, clouded with a light shimmer.
Why was it happening so fast this time?
There was no mistaking it. This was the early sign of another approaching heat cycle.
