- Chapter 47 - Amnesia
When she heard how Qi Xiyao addressed Yu Peirong, Ye An pressed her lips together and stayed silent. Her expression was uneasy, and she looked visibly nervous.
Qi Xiyao ended the phone call quickly and didn’t say much to the person on the other end. She maintained full control in front of Ye An and lowered her voice as she asked,
“You like Xu Xiaoqi, don’t you?”
Ye An’s face instantly turned red. It was the first time she looked like a real person instead of a numb puppet. Just as she started stammering in response, Qi Xiyao continued,
“What are you so nervous about? It’s not like I’m going to fight you for her.”
Whenever Ye An faced Qi Xiyao, she seemed overwhelmed by fear, like she was completely powerless, obedient to every word. It was as if she were facing some kind of terrifying figure. She spoke uneasily, repeating Qi Xiyao’s words.
“Right. You have a wife. You wouldn’t fight me…”
Qi Xiyao couldn’t help but laugh.
This person wasn’t that unlikeable, at least not anymore. Maybe she wasn’t a good person in the past, but she had never been truly evil either. It was more that her environment had pushed her down a dark path.
Her feelings for Xu Xiaoqi were obvious. Qi Xiyao wasn’t sure if Xu Xiaoqi felt the same way, but she knew the original version of Ye An had never confessed. Most likely, it was because of her background.
She had grown up in such an unstable environment that she couldn’t offer Xu Xiaoqi any real security. In recent years, her life had been hanging on by a thread, and she had no energy left to pursue anyone at all.
Whether Ye An could win Xu Xiaoqi’s heart after helping her recover would be up to fate. Qi Xiyao had no interest in playing matchmaker.
She was focused on someone else now, so after a few final instructions to Ye An, she left.
On her way back, Qi Xiyao received a call from Yu Peirong.
But this time, it was different. Yu Peirong, having lost her memory, no longer had her usual calm demeanor. A note by her hospital bed listed Qi Xiyao’s number, and in that moment, Qi Xiyao became her lifeline.
Yu Peirong’s voice was naturally gentle and low, but now it had taken on a softer tone, almost like a delicate Omega.
After a few soothing words, Qi Xiyao simply explained,
“I’m your wife. I just stepped out for a bit, but I’ll be back soon. Do you want me to bring you anything to eat? Maybe some porridge?”
On the other end, Yu Peirong quietly sipped water from the cup by her bedside. Her mouth felt dry, but she didn’t like plain water. She preferred it with a bit of tea.
Her voice was soft, and she looked blankly at the white walls of the hospital. Surrounded by the sharp smell of disinfectant, she felt a strange sense of melancholy.
“Just come back soon. I don’t want anything else.”
When Qi Xiyao gently pushed open the hospital room door, her heart was pounding even faster than before. Especially when she saw the barefaced woman sitting up slowly on the bed, gazing at her. Their eyes met, and Qi Xiyao could barely breathe.
Before the system shut down, it had warned her that after regaining consciousness, Yu Peirong might suffer temporary memory loss due to head trauma.
This phase would be similar to an Alpha’s susceptibility period. She might become irritable, unstable, or even unpredictable. She would need care, support, and constant company.
Yu Peirong’s long hair was loose around her shoulders. The blue-and-white hospital gown made her skin look slightly pale, but her features remained sharp and beautiful. Her hair was a little messy, and her confused eyes gave her a softness Qi Xiyao had never seen before. She looked unexpectedly adorable.
Without realizing it, Qi Xiyao smiled and sat down beside her. She was about to call her “Rong-jie” like she always did, but before she could say a word, Yu Peirong wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
She leaned in and took a deep breath, inhaling the subtle grapefruit sweetness of Qi Xiyao’s scent. It was completely different from the harsh smell of the hospital and filled her with comfort.
Without thinking, Yu Peirong reached for the suppressant patch over the Omega gland on Qi Xiyao’s neck. She managed to peel up one corner before Qi Xiyao grabbed her hand and stopped her.
“Not here. You can’t do that here.”
Qi Xiyao hadn’t expected this version of Yu Peirong to act like this and quickly stopped the dangerous move.
Yu Peirong looked deeply into her eyes and gently hooked a finger under Qi Xiyao’s soft chin. Her breath was warm against her face.
“Why not? Aren’t you my wife?”
Qi Xiyao looked flustered and a little embarrassed, which made Yu Peirong smile. Her tense expression finally relaxed, and she started to act spoiled without even realizing it.
She didn’t know why it felt so natural, but the moment she heard that Qi Xiyao was her wife, it felt like everything made perfect sense.
“Sweetheart, I’m feeling better. Can we go home now?”
Qi Xiyao hesitated before asking,
“Rong… do you remember anything?”
Yu Peirong still remembered her general identity and knew she didn’t get along with her family, though she couldn’t recall the reason. Qi Xiyao had explained that the two of them were married. She understood that, but not much else.
Apparently, she had hit her head and lost most of her memory.
But she really liked the soft and sweet woman in front of her.
Qi Xiyao still didn’t feel entirely at ease, so she had the doctor come in and do a full examination. Once everything checked out, she arranged for discharge and took Yu Peirong home.
Yu Peirong didn’t ask many questions. She packed up her things and quietly followed Qi Xiyao.
Back at home, she felt like the space looked familiar, but she couldn’t recall living there. Qi Xiyao could cook, but after a long day, she was too tired to prepare dinner, so she decided to order delivery. She asked Yu Peirong what she wanted to eat.
Standing in front of the bathroom mirror while brushing her hair, Yu Peirong replied,
“Just order whatever you want. I’m not picky.”
The food arrived quickly. It was a simple but flavorful meal—scallion oil fried noodles and a dry pot rice dish with cumin-seasoned potato wedges, enoki mushrooms, and shredded chicken. The aroma was rich, the texture soft and sticky. After lying in a hospital bed for so long, Yu Peirong was starving. She finished the entire meal. It was exactly the kind of flavor she liked.
While they ate, Qi Xiyao felt it was time to explain some important things. She started with a brief overview of the situation at Yishui Entertainment.
The girl group Yu Peirong had planned was now in the recruitment phase. They had brought in three hundred trainees. Before filming the competition show, two hundred would be eliminated. The remaining one hundred would compete for debut spots.
In about a month, the first elimination round would be over. Most of the show’s decisions were left to mentors and producers, but Yu Peirong had originally said she wanted to be personally involved. Now, it was unclear whether she still could.
Most importantly, the company’s chief executive had lost her memory.
And that was no small matter.
Qi Xiyao had no intention of telling anyone else about this for the time being.
After hearing about the current situation with her family, Yu Peirong didn’t show much sadness. She only frowned slightly, tapping her fingers against the table while quietly thinking.
“And there’s one more thing I forgot to tell you,” Qi Xiyao sighed, the thought only now coming back to her. “Yu Shang and Zhou Qianjin have escaped. Before leaving, they went back to the house, hired someone to unlock the doors, and stole several of Yu Litian’s bank cards.”
Yu Shang knew the passwords to some of Yu Litian’s small-limit bank accounts. Of course, what counted as a small amount for someone like Yu Litian would still be considered a fortune for ordinary people.
With those cards, Yu Shang and his mother could live comfortably for a long time.
Qi Xiyao had also been wondering. When Yu Litian handed over all of Yu Shang’s incriminating evidence to Yu Peirong, it looked like a gesture of full trust in his daughter. But in truth, it wasn’t.
He had simply pushed all responsibility onto Yu Peirong. That way, if Yu Shang and Zhou Qianjin ever wanted revenge, their first target would be her, not him.
Besides, that cunning old fox made sure that none of the evidence he gave Yu Peirong had anything to do with money.
Qi Xiyao remembered a time when Yu Shang had falsified financial records. He almost got caught and ended up working overnight trying to cover it up. She had even bumped into him at the company, looking haggard with dark circles under his eyes.
She didn’t believe for a second that the two of them hadn’t touched any dirty money.
As the original female lead of the story, Qi Xiyao was no naive innocent. She laid out her reasoning carefully to Yu Peirong, who listened with her eyes lowered, quietly considering it.
“In that case, we should have the company’s finances thoroughly audited,” Yu Peirong said after a moment. “If Yu Shang tampered with anything, we need to catch it.”
She couldn’t remember how she handled things before, but now that her wife had taken the lead with such decisiveness, Yu Peirong trusted her completely. She was happy to follow Qi Xiyao’s lead.
Qi Xiyao could feel Yu Peirong’s absolute trust, and it warmed her heart.
It was the first time she had seen Yu Peirong behave so obediently in front of her, like a little kitten. Every word she said was taken seriously. Qi Xiyao couldn’t help laughing and teased her.
“President Yu, aren’t you afraid I’ll sell you off the moment you let your guard down?”
“I am. I’m terrified.”
Before Qi Xiyao could respond, Yu Peirong suddenly leaned in and pressed a kiss to her chin. She didn’t go any further, just gently licked and kissed the soft curve of her jaw, like a kitten drinking milk. Qi Xiyao froze, completely caught off guard.
She had expected Yu Peirong, after losing most of her memory, to become unstable or irritable, just like the typical temperamental characters in dramas.
She had even prepared herself to console her through mood swings.
But she hadn’t expected that this was the kind of comfort Yu Peirong would need.
Still, Qi Xiyao had to admit that she found this version of Yu Peirong even more adorable than before.
After some playful teasing, Qi Xiyao started to feel a bit sweaty and decided to take a shower.
She had just taken off her outer clothes and was about to step into the water when she heard footsteps outside. Someone knocked on the bathroom door, and after she gave permission, a head peeked in.
The woman’s voice was soft and pleading, full of sweet charm. She blinked at her and asked with a playful pout,
“Sweetheart, can’t we take a shower together?”
