- Chapter 13 - Being Stubborn for a While
Scolded her? Must be coaxed, must be coaxed.
The sedan drove for an unknown amount of time before finally stopping outside a small manor. Xuan Yuchi’s phone was dead, and there was no data cable or wireless charging in Margat’s car.
She had originally wanted to summon 666, but with only two lottery chances a day, she had to save them for when they mattered most.
Before Xuan Yuchi could get out, a white-faced robot opened the car door for her.
“Hello, Miss Xuan. The Master has been waiting for you for a long time. Please follow me.”
Xuan Yuchi stepped out, and Margat drove away.
A tray extended from the bottom of the white-faced robot, prompting Xuan Yuchi to stand on it.
Xuan Yuchi held onto its shoulder and was transported by the robot to the inner garden, where Bai Ci was leisurely sipping tea under a sunshade.
Seeing her arrival, Bai Ci poured her a cup of tea: “Have a seat.”
Xuan Yuchi clapped her hands and sat down: “Cut to the chase.”
Bai Ci: “It was our family that framed the Xuan family.”
Xuan Yuchi was slightly stunned.
That was too direct…
But what good was Bai Ci admitting it? The evidence was the most important thing.
Xuan Yuchi said seriously: “Where is the evidence?”
Bai Ci: “You promise to do one thing for me, and I will provide you with the information I can offer.”
Xuan Yuchi: “What thing?”
Bai Ci: “Come with me.”
Bai Ci stood up and walked towards the white house, with Xuan Yuchi following closely behind. They went from the ground floor to the basement.
Unlike a typical basement, Bai Ci’s basement was vast and expansive. Its simple, futuristic decor made it look like a laboratory.
Bai Ci pushed open the silver door, and inside was indeed a large laboratory. The researchers who were adjusting data in front of electronic screens immediately stopped what they were doing.
“Mother.” Bai Yangyang glanced at Xuan Yuchi, her deep-set eyes filled with complex emotions.
The first time Xuan Yuchi saw Bai Yangyang, she also felt she looked familiar, but she couldn’t remember where she had seen this person.
Since she was Bai Ci’s daughter, perhaps they had met as children. Although the Bai family’s status wasn’t as high as it was now, the Xuan family was never arrogant, unlike the Bian family, who only associated with people in their own circle.
Bai Ci: “Miss Xuan, I’m telling you such a big secret about our Bai family. Asking for a tube of your blood isn’t too much, is it?”
Xuan Yuchi’s eyelid twitched. Of course, it was too much!
A tube of her blood was extremely precious. When she was little and had blood tests, her mother had to coax her three days in advance. During the blood draw, her mother and their auntie would stand on her left and right to accompany her, and the needle chosen was the finest internationally available.
Hearing the words “a tube of blood,” Xuan Yuchi almost fainted on the spot. Reviving the family was indeed too heavy a burden.
Xuan Yuchi covered her arm: “Change the request.”
Bai Ci: “No.”
Bai Yangyang had already wheeled over the tools for the blood draw: “My technique is good, it won’t hurt you.”
Xuan Yuchi was briefly conflicted inside. The arrow was on the bowstring; she might as well make the sacrifice… She could always eat something good later to replenish herself.
“What do you want my blood for?”
Bai Yangyang: “For experiments. It won’t harm you.”
Bai Yangyang looked different from the Bai family members Xuan Yuchi had met. When she spoke, she sounded like a protagonist in a TV drama, and her eyes were clearer than Bai Ci’s.
Xuan Yuchi looked at Bai Ci and said firmly: “You tell me first, and then I’ll cooperate with the blood draw.”
Bai Ci hesitated, but Bai Yangyang spoke first: “An elder in your family was colluding with an elder in the Bai family.”
Bai Ci quickly glared at Bai Yangyang. Why was this child so bad at keeping a secret!
A thunderclap went off in Xuan Yuchi’s mind. The downfall of the Xuan family was actually due to someone in their own family. Who could it be?
She went over the elders in her family but couldn’t come up with a clue. It seemed she would have to wait until she returned home to ask her mother.
Bai Yangyang had Xuan Yuchi lie down on the bed and meticulously disinfected her arm with iodine. Bai Ci angrily walked out.
Bai Yangyang suddenly took a packet of popping candy from her pocket and placed it in Xuan Yuchi’s other hand.
Xuan Yuchi stared at the popping candy, and some memories surged into her brain as the candy entered her mouth.
That year, she was in the eighth grade. The school organized physical exams, but her mother couldn’t come because she was busy. When the blood-drawing line reached Xuan Yuchi, she stood up and ran to the back to queue again.
Finally, she was the only one left. Xuan Yuchi trembled, looking at the needle. It was a girl in her class, one she didn’t usually notice, who took her hand and encouraged her to go up.
Just as the needle was about to be inserted into her arm, the girl covered her eyes and put a packet of popping candy into her mouth.
Xuan Yuchi studied Bai Yangyang’s face and asked with uncertainty: “Are you He Lanyue?”
Bai Yangyang nodded, pulled out the syringe, and quickly pressed a cotton swab onto the spot. Xuan Yuchi hadn’t felt even a tiny bit of pain throughout the process.
“I used to follow my mother, but now I follow my birth mother. My name is Bai Yangyang now.”
She placed the drawn blood into a small window, where someone seemed to be waiting and took the blood away.
“Margat will take you back. Goodbye.” Bai Yangyang gave her a friendly smile.
Outside the door, Bai Ci received a call from Bian Yunchen and felt a massive headache.
“I only invited Miss Xuan to be a guest at my home. I have no other intentions.”
Bian Yunchen’s voice was cold enough to freeze water: “I’m at your gate. Send her out immediately.”
Bai Ci’s heart ached with resentment. Just then, Xuan Yuchi opened the door and glanced at her with contempt: “I won’t see you out, then.”
Xuan Yuchi thought, this old woman must have gone crazy; why was her tone so strange? So she couldn’t help but say, “The Bai family is indeed a small, unimportant family. They have no sense of hospitality.”
After saying that, she quickly hurried away, leaving Bai Ci clutching her chest in a huff.
Bai Yangyang came out with the test report and handed the dozen-page report to her mother. Bai Ci said irritably: “Just read me the important parts.”
Bai Yangyang: “She has no organic diseases, and her mind is also perfectly normal.”
Bai Ci frowned: “Could her previous escape to Northern Vietnam have been a smokescreen? No, how is that possible? Wasn’t your prediction very accurate? If she didn’t have a problem with her mind, why would she suddenly come back and act like a completely different person?”
Bai Yangyang lowered her head: “Mother, perhaps my ability is insufficient.”
Bai Ci sighed: “Check again.”
Bai Yangyang: “Yes.”
Just as Xuan Yuchi walked into the sunlight, she saw Bian Yunchen striding towards her, holding an umbrella, still wearing the grey suit dress from the fashion show.
She quickly threw away the cotton swab in her hand, but the red dot on her arm was immediately locked onto by Bian Yunchen’s deathly grey gaze.
“Sister Bian, are you here to pick me up?” She managed a smile, but then she saw Bai Fu following behind and quickly put away her smile.
Could she be here with Bai Fu for some sort of family gathering?
Bian Yunchen clenched Xuan Yuchi’s wrist, her expression growing more serious.
Bai Fu, who was behind them, had a throbbing vein on her forehead. Wasn’t Bian Yunchen completely ignoring her?
“You’ve been at work for only a few days and you’re already neglecting your duties? Do you know how long I waited for you outside the show?” Bian Yunshen’s tone was scolding, and the strength in her hand didn’t lessen, as if she wanted to snap Xuan Yuchi’s wrist.
“Sister Bian, ouch, ouch, ouch!” Xuan Yuchi shook off her hand, complaining tearfully.
Bai Fu secretly laughed. It seemed Bian Yunchen wasn’t that concerned about Xuan Yuchi after all.
Half an hour ago, Bian Yunchen called Bai Fu and asked her to take her to Bai Ci’s house. When Bai Fu asked why, Bian Yunchen remained silent.
Only upon reaching the manor did she realize that Bai Ci had lured Xuan Yuchi here. No wonder Bian Yunshen’s car speed had been accelerating all the way.
But thinking about it now, a big star like Bian Yunchen, who everyone fawned over, would naturally be in a foul mood after waiting for someone for so long after an event.
Bai Fu curved her lips: “Yunchen, I’m going to find my aunt now. See you when we get back home.”
Bian Yunchen nodded, gave Xuan Yuchi a deep look, and turned to walk ahead.
Xuan Yuchi trailed behind, seething with anger. Sister Bian had gone too far, scolding her in front of an outsider.
When they reached Yunchen’s car, Xuan Yuchi stood there, not moving.
Bian Yunchen had already fastened her seatbelt, rolled down the window, and looked sidelong at the person outside, her tone softening a bit: “Get in.”
Xuan Yuchi pouted and muttered: “You, scolded, me.”
Bian Yunchen rubbed her temple. There was a noticeable red mark on the web of her thumb and forefinger, exactly where she had gripped her earlier.
Something was wrong. It was as if she had been controlled by another person just now, saying words she would never say.
What was done was done. Bian Yunchen unfastened her seatbelt and got out of the car, disregarding the fact that this was Bai Ci’s territory. She walked to Xuan Yuchi, tucked the loose hair by her face behind her ear, and said softly: “It was my fault.”
That simple apology instantly brought a smile back to Xuan Yuchi’s face. After all, it wasn’t often that Sister Bian actively admitted she was wrong.
She quickly wiped the smile away, lifted her chin, and looked away, asking sternly: “What was your fault?”
Bian Yunchen sighed softly: “Xuan Yuchi, let’s stop this nonsense.”
Right after leaving the show, she received a call from Xuan Ling, who said Xuan Yuchi’s phone couldn’t be reached and asked if she was with her.
Bian Yunchen called Xuan Yuchi’s phone, but it also couldn’t be reached. She then asked her driver and Yu Ming. Yu Ming saw Xuan Yuchi get into a Mercedes, which looked like a good car.
Her heart immediately began to pound. A foreign country and a sudden departure—the combination of these two factors almost made her head ring.
Bian Yunchen clutched her arm and crouched on the ground in a dizzy spell. Media flashbulbs instantly surrounded her, and her bodyguards nearly called an ambulance.
Fortunately, she held onto her last shred of rationality and asked Yu Ming to report the incident, which led to the license plate number. The car owner was named Bai Yangyang. This surname immediately made her zero in on the Bai family.
She didn’t dare to act rashly, afraid that a sudden move would be detrimental to Xuan Yuchi. She could only find Bai Fu and ask her to take her to Bai Ci’s lair…
After arriving at the manor, she called Bai Ci, and in just a few sentences, she learned that Bai Ci had brought Xuan Yuchi here.
She suddenly felt that she had been wrong before. She had wanted everything to quietly return to its original state, but the Bai family was clearly still scheming.
And she had overestimated her ability to withstand losing Xuan Yuchi again.
The same mistake must not happen a second time.
Bian Yunchen opened the car door, signaling Xuan Yuchi to get in.
Xuan Yuchi’s eyes sparkled with emotion, and she thought to herself, the sun must have risen from the west today!
Were her days of acting imperiously about to begin?!
She obediently sat down, then coughed lightly and put on airs: “I’m still not appeased, but it’s a bit hot outside.”
Bian Yunchen closed her car door. After getting in, she took a bottle of peach-flavored sparkling water from the car fridge. Xuan Yuchi quickly snatched the grape-flavored sparkling water next to it, and Bian Yunchen put the peach-flavored one back.
Bian Yunchen: “Your taste has changed a lot.”
Xuan Yuchi drank the sparkling water with a gurgling sound, thinking for two seconds: “It seems so. I used to like cheese, but now I lose my appetite when I see it.”
Bian Yunshen’s eyes darkened, and her fingers tapped on the steering wheel.
Xuan Yuchi held the sparkling water, secretly regretting that she had accepted it so easily. She should have been stubborn for a while longer and made Yunchen coax her into drinking it!
A lost opportunity will not come again…
Xuan Yuchi’s eyes rolled, and she sat up straight: “Sister Bian.”
Bian Yunchen kept her hands steady on the steering wheel and glanced at her.
“Should we reconcile?” Xuan Yuchi asked.
Bian Yunchen stepped on the brake, looked at Xuan Yuchi solemnly, and then suddenly curved into a smile.
