- I Need To Find A Way To Make Her Love Me Again
- Chapter 56 - On What Grounds Should I Save You?
A sudden gust of wind whistled through the trees, yet the falling leaves remained silent. It was a mere test, but the opponent’s reaction allowed Wei Yao to guess the answer with ease. This descendant of the Yan clan truly didn’t know how to hide herself. However, Wei Yao didn’t care about the rise or fall of the Yan clan; she was only here because she needed a “vessel.”
Since she had been able to find her way here, it proved that the people of the Yan clan had not been completely wiped out.
Her nose twitched as a familiar scent wafted into her nostrils. Wei Yao stood up and looked toward the horizon, thinking to herself that this was truly a case of “searching far and wide only to find it without effort.” The person she was looking for was actually heading right toward her.
She scanned her surroundings and flew up into a Malacca tree dozens of meters high. Hiding herself within the foliage, she parted the thin, drooping branches to watch from afar.
She saw a group of fairies dressed in indigo-blue “ruyi” skirts layered with moon white gold-woven cloud crane overcoats. They held vermillion lacquered long poles, the tips of which were fitted with small golden beams. Hanging from these beams were white banners embroidered with a hundred bats and flowers, the five colored glazed beads at the bottom of the banners shimmered brilliantly in the sunlight, dazzling the eyes.
Wei Yao narrowed her eyes, watching the solemn faced fairies clearing the way in front. Following behind them were eight strongmen carrying a jade coffin high on their shoulders. The exterior of the coffin was inlaid with diamond shaped jade pieces, and the jade walls were carved with exquisite patterns of the “Secret Eight Immortals.” It was a masterpiece of craftsmanship.
However, Wei Yao’s gaze was fixed more on the woman following at the very back, surrounded by three “moths.” The woman had beautiful features, but her expression was terrifyingly sinister.
Wei Yao whispered to herself, “Why does this woman exude such a crooked, evil aura? She hasn’t a shred of the air of a prestigious orthodox sect.”
Just as she thought this, a sword-glare came splitting through the air toward her face, severing the branches and leaves that concealed her.
When Yan Xiaoling saw the woman hiding in the tree, she wondered who it could be. Looking closer, she realized it was Yi Rong. The wariness in her eyes lessened slightly as she shouted, “You have quite the nerve to dare come back here.”
But as soon as she spoke, the person who had been standing on the tree branch a second ago appeared directly in front of her the next, delivering a heavy blow to her chest. As her world spun, she heard the panicked screams of the procession ahead. She mustered her strength and roared, “No one is allowed to move!”
Yan Xiaoling crawled halfway up from the ground, looking up at the woman standing before her. With a dark face, she asked, “Who are you?”
Wei Yao glanced at her dismissively. She reached out and placed her hand on the woman’s shoulder, slender tentacles sprouted from her palm and stabbed downward. With an expression that completely disregarded the other person, she said, “You don’t need to know the answer.”
Yan Xiaoling sensed that the other person was funneling something into her body, as if trying to possess her. Enduring the agonizing pain, she pinched a talisman between her fingers and slapped it onto the back of the woman’s leg. Immediately, skeletal, sharp claws burst from the ground and grabbed the woman’s ankles.
Even so, the person before her did not stop. She remained indifferent to the movement beneath her feet. Yan Xiaoling tried to further control her “human ghouls” (Ren Gu) to attack, but at that moment, her head felt as if it were exploding with pain, making it impossible to concentrate.
Fragments of memory suddenly flashed through her mind. Following those memories, she began to recite a complex incantation. Miraculously, the throbbing pain in her head began to dissipate slightly.
Wei Yao noticed her demonic energy was being pushed out and let out a surprised “Huh?” before saying, “The Yunyin Heart Method?!”
Taking advantage of her momentary distraction, a speck of red light rippled out from the horizon. It moved like a fluttering wave, pouncing rapidly as hundreds of “Blood Swallows” swarmed and enveloped the woman from above.
Seeing the sea of red before her, the veins on Wei Yao’s forehead throbbed. She hated birds most of all. She reached out to crush a fluttering Blood Swallow, then gathered her Qi and released a shockwave. A whirlwind rose from her body, sweeping all the Blood Swallows aside.
Seeing a purple clad woman appear out of nowhere and take her target to the other side, Wei Yao’s expression soured. Encountering one person after another who ruined her plans made her extremely displeased.
When Yan Xiaoling saw that Liu Ruoni had actually come to help her, she snorted and said, “Rare for you to actually show some discernment.”
Liu Ruoni ignored the woman beside her, her eyes fixed on the opponent. The scattered Blood Swallows flew back into her hand, condensing into a curved blade. She immediately leapt into the air, swinging the blade toward the woman.
Seeing that this newcomer didn’t waste a single word on small talk and went straight for the kill, Wei Yao realized she was a formidable opponent and stopped taking her lightly.
A mass of black mist extended from beneath her feet, and slender tentacles rose from the ground, charging in unison toward Liu Ruoni.
Liu Ruoni struck out left and right, parrying the tentacles lunging at her. With a swift flick of her wrist, she sliced them in half and pressed her advantage downward.
Wei Yao tried to step back, but seeing the skeletal hands still gripping her ankles, she couldn’t shake them off. She reached down and violently yanked the figures hidden underground out to use as a meat shield.
Upon seeing the mangled limbs, distorted, rotting, and stitched-together corpses, Wei Yao screamed, “Ah! What on earth are these? They’re disgusting!”
She hurriedly hacked off the hands grabbing her and used her tentacles to fling them far away. She treated the dead bodies like balls, tossing them toward the woman chasing her.
Yan Xiaoling looked up to see the person in front of her stomping her feet in rage and shouting:
“I can’t stand it! I can’t stand it!” “Who created these sub-human, ungodly, filthy things? Burn them all, quickly!”
Hearing this, Yan Xiaoling sneered, “And what kind of thing are you?” Remembering how the woman had just made her head feel like it was splitting, she was filled with fury and cursed, “You little wench, I’ll kill you for sure.”
With a thought, the puppet like human ghouls on the ground finally began to move again. The severed arms even found their way back to their bodies.
The sight made Wei Yao even more nauseated. She contorted her face and said, “You’re both so young, how can you have such vulgar tastes?”
Liu Ruoni secretly agreed, these things were indeed of the lowest taste. However, she glanced at the agitated Yan Xiaoling. Controlling these human ghouls was making her lose control of her emotions, but she couldn’t afford to break down yet.
With that thought, Liu Ruoni saw that the human ghouls had already entangled the fake “Yi Rong.” She secretly released a Blood Swallow to slip away, then kicked off the ground, soaring upward to launch another full force attack.
Wei Yao was utterly revolted by the human ghouls. Seeing the skinless, faceless, disgusting things surrounding her, every hair on her body stood on end in protest. She had no desire to keep tangling with them.
She struck the curved blade out of the attacking woman’s hand and used the momentum to swing her own energy in a circle, slicing the surrounding human ghouls in two. Not wanting to see them split and fuse back together again, Wei Yao turned and fled.
She ran as if her feet were greased. Liu Ruoni hadn’t intended to dwell on this fight anyway, seeing her flee, she didn’t give chase. When she saw Yan Xiaoling about to fly after her on a sword, she spoke up: “Do you not want to walk the Path of Guidance anymore?”
Hearing the reminder, the fire in Yan Xiaoling’s head cooled slightly. Seeing the crowd watching them, she suppressed her anger and said, “No, let’s continue.”
Liu Ruoni gave a brief “Mm.” She watched the other woman resume commanding the group, then her gaze fell on the jade coffin, and her eyes darkened.
Wei Yao didn’t stop until she had walked quite a distance and saw that no one was following. She slowed her pace, though the imagery of those horrific corpses still flashed before her eyes. She shook her head vigorously to clear the unpleasant thoughts.
She hissed and asked the other soul inside her body, “The Yan clan is supposed to be a prestigious family; how did they produce a descendant with such vulgar taste and crude behavior? It’s terrifying.”
“She’s even worse than a silly child like you.”
Yi Rong… remained silent, unable to respond to that.
Wei Yao then thought of the group’s grand procession, which looked like they were performing a ritual. She said, “You said the Yan clan is nearly extinct, so why are there still so many people here in the Yulan Palace?”
Yi Rong replied, “They are not from the Yulan Palace.”
Wei Yao said, “I know that. I mean, what are all those people doing here? What kind of ceremony are they performing?”
Yi Rong said, “I don’t know.”
Wei Yao couldn’t help but roll her eyes. “How can you be so stupid? What do you know?”
Yi Rong said, “These matters have nothing to do with you. Get out of my body, quickly.”
Wei Yao replied, “Hah, you think I don’t want to? Once I find a suitable and powerful vessel, who would bother with you?”
“You should be grateful I’m in your body. Otherwise, with your current strength, who could you beat? You’d be getting hung up and thrashed by everyone.”
Yi Rong…
Wei Yao felt even more sorry for herself. Because things were going poorly everywhere, she had to hide in this useless descendant’s body. As she sighed over this, she wasn’t paying attention to where she was walking and stepped on something soft and springy.
A howl rang out, startling her.
Looking down, she saw a head with a scruffy beard and hair like a messy bird’s nest buried in the ground. Wei Yao reached out her foot and gave it another kick. The man cried out in pain and pleaded, “Lady, I am not a bad person, nor am I a monster. Please stop stepping on me.”
The man’s voice was weak and powerless, but Yi Rong recognized him as the Young Sect Master of Mount Yuanming, Jiang Yeuren. She said, “I know this person.”
Wei Yao gave an “Oh?” and bent down to look at yet another person who looked neither like a human nor a ghost. “Why are you buried out here in the middle of nowhere?”
Jiang Yueren had been captured by Yan Xiaoling a long time ago while investigating the human ghouls at Yulan Palace and had been buried in the soil ever since. He couldn’t remember how long it had been, enduring wind, sun, and the cycle of day and night, accompanied only by mountain birds and insects.
Although his spiritual energy kept him from starving to death, he was plagued by the anxiety of being trapped with no one knowing or coming to his rescue. He was heartbroken that the truths he had discovered could not be revealed to the world.
Finally, he had encountered a living person. He cleared his throat and tried to use the refined tone of a gentle young master. “Lady, I apologize for frightening you.”
“I was harmed by a treacherous person and have been trapped here for many days. Meeting you today is my great fortune.”
“Could you please help me and dig me out?”
Wei Yao frowned, as the man hadn’t answered what she wanted to know. “I’ve noticed that when you people speak, you never get to the point.”
“I asked how you got buried here because I want to know the whole story.”
“I don’t want to hear some vague ‘harmed by a treacherous person’ nonsense.”
Jiang Yueren was stunned. He looked up to see a playful, mocking look on the woman’s face. She didn’t seem to feel that her words were an intrusion of privacy at all.
Seeing the woman curl her lips into a mischievous smirk and make a move as if she were about to leave, she said: “How exactly were you harmed? You’d better tell me the whole story clearly. Otherwise, on what grounds should I save you?”
