I Love Her Because She’s Dim-Witted And Filthy Rich - Chapter 31.1
Su Miao dazed for a moment, “Ah? What do you want to say?”
Duan Bainian entered Su Miao’s room and closed the door behind her. “First, I want to apologize to you. Last night I… I shouldn’t have been so fierce with you.”
Su Miao felt increasingly awkward. “You don’t need to apologize. I know I made you angry last night.”
Duan Bainian sighed. “That’s also what I’m about to talk to you about. Since we are both relatively calm right now, I want to confirm with you once more: you… you really don’t intend to establish a romantic relationship with me, right?”
Su Miao glanced at Duan Bainian, then quickly lowered her head and remained silent.
But such an answer was enough.
Duan Bainian felt a sharp pang of bitterness in her heart. “Then… let it be. Don’t worry, we are still friends.”
Su Miao was somewhat surprised. “Really? We’ll still be the same as before?”
How could it possibly be the same?
But she was just a child; if a lie could make her happy, what was the harm in saying it?
Duan Bainian turned slightly, avoiding Su Miao’s gaze. “Yes, the same as before. If you want to come over and play, you can still find me.”
Su Miao gave a cheer and stepped forward to hug Duan Bainian. “You’re so good! Duan Bainian!”
In a great mood, Su Miao pulled out her phone. “Look, this is a viral restaurant that’s been really popular lately. I heard the food is delicious. Let’s go eat there in a bit!”
The corners of Duan Bainian’s mouth quirked. “Okay.”
The two of them went downstairs afterward. Su Miao happily reported to her mother that they were going out for good food. He Aizhi nodded with a smile and told them to be safe on the road.
Once in the car, as Su Miao fastened her seatbelt, she said, “Duan Bainian, do you know? When you pushed me out of the car last night, I was heartbroken. I thought you didn’t want me anymore. I didn’t expect you to come looking for me again today, hehe.”
Duan Bainian really didn’t know how to respond to this. Telling the truth would make Su Miao sad; telling a lie would make herself sad.
She changed the subject. “Where is that viral restaurant you mentioned? Open the navigation.”
To be honest, this meal was no different from usual.
Duan Bainian was still that gentle older sister. She gently asked Su Miao what she wanted to eat, gently placed food in Su Miao’s bowl, gently wiped the oil from Su Miao’s lips, and gently told Su Miao not to run off while she went to pay the bill.
But Duan Bainian knew perfectly well in her heart that at this moment, she didn’t want to be gentle at all. She even wanted to simply throw a tantrum and leave.
But what was the point of throwing a tantrum at an immature child?
After paying, Su Miao said she needed to go to the restroom, and Duan Bainian waited at the entrance.
Baron’s call came in at that moment.
“I just saw your WeChat message. Why are you asking for my bank account number?”
Duan Bainian smiled. “I want to pay you back for the car you bought yesterday.”
Baron could hardly believe it. “Are you serious? I thought you were giving me a chance yesterday!”
Duan Bainian laughed helplessly. “Baron, if something could have happened between us, it would have happened years ago. How could it wait until now?”
Baron: “Alright then, let’s have dinner tonight? If you don’t eat with me, I won’t give you the account number.”
Thinking that her actions were indeed improper—she did have the suspicion of using Baron—she decided she should apologize in person over dinner. So, Duan Bainian agreed to meet for dinner that night.
When Su Miao came out of the restroom, she wanted to go shopping with Duan Bainian. She hadn’t gone shopping in a long time; the last time was back in July.
Duan Bainian really wasn’t in the mood to accompany Su Miao shopping, especially since she would have to pretend to be very happy. It was mentally exhausting. Thus, she declined: “I have things to do this afternoon. I’ll take you home in a bit.”
Su Miao was a bit disappointed. “Why do you always have so many things to do? You don’t have much work lately, do you?”
Duan Bainian: “I’m meeting a friend. I need to ask them for a favor later.”
Su Miao’s heart skipped a beat. “You aren’t going to see that man from yesterday again, are you?”
Worried that Su Miao would overthink, Duan Bainian subconsciously denied it. “No, it’s another friend.”
Su Miao looked dissatisfied. “Since when did you have so many friends?”
As she walked toward the parking lot, Duan Bainian said, “How can you survive in the entertainment industry without many friends? Alright, stop thinking about all these random things. I’ll take you home in a bit. You probably didn’t sleep well last night, so you can go back and take a nap.”
Of course, Su Miao didn’t want to go home. “Can I go with you? Just like yesterday.”
Duan Bainian refused, “It’s not appropriate. You should go home.”
Su Miao pouted and reluctantly got into the passenger seat.
Back home, Su Miao couldn’t sleep. She was incredibly bored. First, she played with a puzzle for a long time, but found it uninteresting. Then she dropped into her fan group chat. After a few lines, a group of fans started chasing her and calling her “daughter.” She felt even more bored… who would want a bunch of extra mothers for no reason?
She tossed and turned until after 5 PM when she received a notification that a package had arrived.
She opened it and saw it was the projector she bought a couple of days ago.
Su Miao tinkered with the projector for a while, getting happier the more she played with it.
Hehe, in the future, she could watch movies at home with Duan Bainian.
She happily sent a WeChat message to Duan Bainian: [Are you done with your work yet?]
A long time passed before Duan Bainian’s reply came back: [Not yet.]
Su Miao was a bit unhappy. What was Duan Bainian doing? Why was she replying so slowly? And it was already after 7 PM. She had been busy since after lunch; how could she still not be finished?
Upset as she was, it didn’t affect her desire to watch a movie with Duan Bainian. She asked again: [When will you be finished? Is it soon?]
This time Duan Bainian replied fairly quickly: [Yeah, it’s almost over.]
Su Miao immediately grabbed the projector and went downstairs. After a quick turn and not finding her family driver, she hailed a taxi herself and went to Duan Bainian’s apartment.
Su Miao went upstairs and knocked on the door, but no one answered for a long time. Thinking Duan Bainian probably wasn’t home yet, she crouched by the door to wait.
After a while, her legs felt sore and numb. She wanted to call Duan Bainian to ask when she’d be back, but worried she might be busy and unable to answer. So she sent a WeChat message instead, but received no reply for half a day.
Su Miao was waiting in discomfort and boredom. She walked to the corner of the stairwell, climbing up and down. On her seventh time sticking her head out of the stairwell window to look out, she finally saw Duan Bainian.
She saw Duan Bainian get out of a black car, followed by the man from yesterday.
Under the glow of the streetlights, she saw the two of them chatting very happily, smiling brilliantly. Duan Bainian also took a bag from the man’s hand, which looked like a gift.
Su Miao was stunned. She thought, Didn’t Duan Bainian say she was meeting another friend?
How could she lie?
The WeChat notification sound pulled Su Miao back from her daze. It was a reply from Duan Bainian: [I’m finished. Don’t worry, I’m already home. You should go to bed early too.]
Su Miao came to her senses. Looking down again, the two figures were gone.
Her heart was racing with panic. Actually, she couldn’t say exactly what she was panicking about, but her heart was thumping wildly and she felt miserable.
Once she regained her composure, she remembered the projector was still at Duan Bainian’s doorstep. So she left the stairwell and returned to the door.
She ran right into Duan Bainian, who was coming out of the elevator.
Duan Bainian clearly hadn’t expected Su Miao to be there. She said in surprise, “Why did you come over? You didn’t even tell me you were coming.”
Su Miao was in a daze. She pointed to the projector next to her. “I bought a projector online, and it arrived today. I thought I’d put it at your house and watch a movie with you.”
Duan Bainian actually didn’t want to see Su Miao much either. Every look made her angry, and the more she looked, the angrier she got.
But since the person was already here, there was no reason to drive her home. So she opened the door. “Come in.”
Su Miao followed into the house blankly. Duan Bainian had a strange expression. “You don’t want the projector at the door?”
Only then did Su Miao realize she hadn’t picked up the projector. She flusteredly went back to the door to bring it in.
Duan Bainian didn’t want to talk to Su Miao too much for the moment. She went to the bedroom to change her clothes, and then went to take a shower.
Coming out of the shower, she saw Su Miao still sitting motionless on the living room sofa. Duan Bainian frowned. “What are you doing sitting there? Go get your clothes, shower, and go to sleep.”
Su Miao still didn’t move. She was a bit dejected. “Duan Bainian, I saw that man bring you back. But you said at noon that the friend you were going to see wasn’t him.”
Duan Bainian’s movement of drying her hair paused. Not wanting Su Miao to overthink, she said, “I ran into him tonight and had dinner with him.”
Su Miao clearly didn’t believe this explanation. She subconsciously picked at her nails. “Are you… are you in a relationship with him?”
Duan Bainian found it somewhat funny. Did whether she was in a relationship have anything to do with Su Miao? Since Su Miao wasn’t willing to establish a relationship, what right did she have to control her?
But she only thought these words; she couldn’t say them out loud. She knew Su Miao too well. If she said something like that, Su Miao would definitely cry again, as if she were the one being wronged.
She didn’t want to argue about these things with Su Miao, because trying to argue with someone who is “pretending to be asleep” is impossible.
She went back to the bedroom and threw Su Miao’s pajamas onto the sofa. “Go shower quickly.”
Su Miao, however, was persistent. “You promised this morning that we’d be the same as before! How can you go and fall in love just like that?”
Duan Bainian tried her best to keep her tone calm. “First, I am not currently in a relationship. Second, we will always be best friends; that hasn’t changed.”
Su Miao’s eyes widened. “It’s different!”
Duan Bainian: “How is it different?”
Su Miao couldn’t say how it was different. After all, Duan Bainian said she wasn’t in a relationship. She changed the question: “Then will you fall in love in the future?”
Duan Bainian countered with a question, “What about you? Will you get married in the future?”
Su Miao immediately retorted, “Of course I won’t fall in love or get married!”
Duan Bainian smiled. “Really? Won’t you feel awkward if you aren’t married by the time you’re 30? At that time, your aunts and relatives will be pointing at your back, saying no one wants you.”
Su Miao’s face turned red instantly. She understood; Duan Bainian was being sarcastic. Yesterday she said it would be awkward if people found out two girls were dating. Now Duan Bainian was doing it on purpose.
Having snapped at Su Miao once, Duan Bainian didn’t feel relieved; instead, she felt increasingly frustrated. She spoke impatiently, “Go take a shower. I’m going to sleep first.”
Su Miao stared blankly at Duan Bainian’s back, unable to speak.
After standing foolishly for half a minute, Su Miao finally took her pajamas into the bathroom.
After showering, Su Miao went into the bedroom and saw Duan Bainian holding a tablet, watching a currently popular variety show. She immediately leaned forward with a fawning expression. “Is your arm-tired holding that? How about I set up the projector? It’s much more comfortable to watch while lying down!”
Duan Bainian acted as if she hadn’t heard anything and continued watching the show. Aside from the sound of the variety show, there was only silence in the room.
Su Miao’s fawning smile froze on her face. She poured herself a glass of water to ease the awkwardness, thinking of what to say to break the current situation.
After drinking the water, Su Miao felt the room was very dry. She went to turn on the humidifier. Turning around, she saw a red bag nearby—exactly the bag that man had given to Duan Bainian earlier.
Su Miao felt her heart skip a beat. She couldn’t take her eyes off the red bag.
