- I Helped My Best Friend with Her Romance—and Fell for the Enemy’s Strategist
- Chapter 4 - Are You Trying to Trample Her to Death?
Lin Ruocheng had been intently focused on the dance moves she was supposed to perform from the very beginning.
But she frustratingly realized, why did she have so many dance steps?
When she watched the instructional breakdown video, it didn’t seem this complicated!
The first and second sections had identical moves.
It looked simple enough… or so she thought.
“Everyone sees it, right? Don’t worry, by the end of the semester, you’ll all be dancing better than us. Take it slow, no rush.”
“We’ll start by breaking down the movements step by step. Please do your best to learn, your final grades depend on it.”
Whenever Lin Ruocheng felt nervous, she had a habit of scratching her palm. But after scratching for a while, she felt nothing.
She couldn’t resist glancing down.
Damn it! She wasn’t scratching her own palm at all.
It was Fu Yanxi’s palm!
Fu Yanxi remained expressionless, as calm as ever, seemingly unfazed.
Lin Ruocheng let out a deep sigh.
Well, as long as she was fine. Since she was the student council president, she probably wasn’t that hard to get along with, right?
“Today, we’ll begin by teaching you the dance steps for this song. The footwork is the most important part.”
Thankfully, she hadn’t worn her white sneakers today.
But… Song Wanqing was wearing white sneakers!
And with a quick glance to the side, she noticed her goddess and secret crush was also wearing white sneakers.
Great. Just great.
After class, there was no going anywhere else, they’d all have to head back to the dorm and scrub their own shoes.
“First, watch closely for the initial eight-count.”
The two instructors demonstrated at the front.
Although Lin Ruocheng wasn’t very flexible, she had a decent sense of rhythm.
Fu Yanxi gradually moved closer.
Guiding her little by little, she realized the girl with the cute orange avatar was the one right in front of her.
She carried a faint scent of oranges.
The perfume she wore was likely “Orange Dew” the fresh, citrus fragrance was subtle and not at all overpowering.
It smelled wonderful, almost addicting.
That perfume couldn’t be cheap, either.
Yet, her overall style was surprisingly modest and affordable.
“Your footwork is wrong, it should be like this.”
Fu Yanxi corrected her once.
Lin Ruocheng humbly accepted the guidance and gradually practiced as instructed.
The long three-plus minutes didn’t feel particularly tedious, just a bit dizzying from all the spinning.
Even so, she hadn’t forgotten her main mission.
She was taking this class at great personal cost, if Song Wanqing and Yu Qiuli didn’t have even a single moment of closeness, all this spinning would be a total waste.
Lost in her thoughts, she stumbled forward, crashing right into Fu Yanxi’s arms.
It happened so naturally.
So naturally that it almost seemed intentional.
Lin Ruocheng quickly straightened up.
“I’m sorry, President.”
“It’s fine.”
With their looks so perfectly matched and both being seniors, they had already drawn quite a bit of attention during practice. A few freshmen had even started filming with their phones. After all, in today’s world, girl-girl and guy-guy pairings often garnered more excitement than traditional ones.
Lin Ruocheng paid no mind to any of that. She immediately turned to check on Song Wanqing.
“Sorry, sis, I messed up again.”
“It’s okay, I made a mistake earlier too.”
The two continued practicing as if no one else was around.
Except now, their once-pristine white sneakers were covered in footprints, both of them.
Well, a perfect pair of geniuses.
If she didn’t know her best friend had a crush on the other person,
she might really have thought these two were sworn enemies.
Stepping on each other’s shoes was clearly intentional.
But now she realized it was purely accidental.
Not only that, within less than half a minute, one had already stepped on the other’s foot.
Perfectly even, no one was at a disadvantage.
Lin Ruocheng: “…”
Fu Yanxi: “…”
“Sorry.”
“Sorry.”
After the two awkward souls apologized to each other, they finally released their mutually tormenting hands and turned to look at their respective strategists.
Choosing ballroom dance was their own decision.
As for the two strategists, they were merely sacrificing themselves for their friends. If it weren’t for their best friends, why would they ever have signed up for ballroom dance?
Lin Ruocheng glanced at Fu Yanxi, leaned in, and whispered in her ear, “So, strategist, it seems you’re not doing so well either. Especially during lunch, what kind of advice were you giving? If I hadn’t suggested Wanqing invite her out tonight, would it have been over for good?”
As Lin Ruocheng slightly raised her head, the tip of her nose gently brushed against the other’s earlobe.
Fu Yanxi had never been in a relationship before.
Guiding Yu Qiuli was her first time.
And probably the only time in her life, she never wanted to fall in love, not ever.
“Yes… so I really admire you. Losing to you, I have no regrets.”
Fu Yanxi smiled affectionately and even reached out to ruffle the other’s hair.
Lin Ruocheng looked up, also smiling.
Truly a master.
If Song Wanqing had even half of her emotional intelligence, she would have won over her goddess long ago.
The two awkward souls just stared blankly at their strategists, their brains seemingly stuck loading something.
Wait a minute… weren’t they supposed to be the strategists?
Why did it feel like the two of them were the ones dating?
Wasn’t this only their second time meeting?
By the time the two-hour class ended, the shoes of the two awkward souls were no longer recognizable in color.
Lin Ruocheng could hardly bear to look.
Didn’t this person tell her earlier that the reason for choosing ballroom dance was to have some intimate contact?
And now, when it came down to it, she turned into a quail. Was her extra two or three centimeters of height just for show? And she used to be the captain of the girls’ basketball team? Seriously?
If these two ever got together, pigs would fly.
“Then… see you on the field tonight?”
“Okay.”
Fu Yanxi nodded.
Such a simple matter of moving their lips, why was it so difficult for these two?
Couldn’t they even talk?
After dragging her best friend away, Lin Ruocheng was utterly exasperated.
“What were you doing back there, sis? Were you trying to stomp your crush to death? Her nice white shoes are completely black now! It’s a miracle she didn’t punch you. If it were me, I would’ve thrown a punch long ago.”
Song Wanqing hesitated before speaking up.
She pointed at her own white shoes.
“But she stepped on mine too, and they’re just as black. We’re even, right?”
“Besides, she held my hand earlier! She held my hand! Her hands are so soft, and goddesses’ hands are always fragrant. You have no idea how good she smelled when she leaned in. Let me tell you…”
Lin Ruocheng had no desire to listen to her ramble.
This was just how she was, pretending to be reserved and timid in front of her crush, but completely letting loose when it was just the two of them.
If she keeps up this attitude on her first date tonight, I’ll be thanking my lucky stars. Winning over a crush would be a piece of cake, no need for me to worry at all.
Would I even need to be the mastermind by her side?
Absolutely not!
If only she had a bit more emotional intelligence.
