- Chapter 7 - Escape - I Won't Wait for You Like I Used To...
Qiu Shuang nodded after seeing Chen Jining’s actions. Actually, her relationship with Chen Jining hadn’t been entirely good for her. Chen Wanjun had indeed been distancing herself from her since that day, although Qiu Shuang thought the other person might be preparing a big move.
Song Ya, as always, persistently tried to invite Qiu Shuang out every week. To Qiu Shuang, the other person hadn’t changed at all; she was just as annoying as before. Every time they met, Song Ya would complain to her about Chen Jining, but after a few times, she stopped.
Did she realize she needed to compete, so she became this considerate?
Qiu Shuang didn’t know.
“Haven’t you finished grabbing? Come on, I’ll grab with you. Why grab with that stone-faced person? I think she’s just putting on an act every day. Didn’t you feel like she was a robot when you were dating her?”
Hearing Song Ya say this, Qiu Shuang had no rebuttal, as what the other person said was exactly right. Her senior seemed truly like a robot.
Dating her was somewhat new and interesting for Qiu Shuang.
It was indeed quite amusing to watch the other person look up all sorts of guides with a puzzled expression, trying to take her to experience various activities. Especially when the senior clicked on a different activity each time and saw that it was completely different from the guide.
At that moment, she seemed to vaguely feel that the senior was a living person.
A very reliable person…
Qiu Shuang didn’t know where the end of their agreement was, but at least at this moment, she was happy with her senior.
With the intense final exams over, Qiu Shuang boarded the train home and returned to her house. She wasn’t very eager to go home and face them, as no matter how hard they tried to create a cozy atmosphere, it couldn’t cover up what had happened in the past.
“You’re back, look how much thinner you’ve gotten again.”
Qiu Shuang, carrying her luggage into the house, looked at her mother’s ingratiating face and sighed. Since that accident three years ago, everyone had changed.
The originally cheerful atmosphere at the dinner table inexplicably became heavy. Qiu Shuang listlessly picked at the food in her bowl. After staring at Qiu Shuang for a long time, her father only said one sentence.
“Are you dating?”
“No.”
I don’t like men, never have.
After staying at home for a few days, Qiu Shuang left the house and began her holiday job. It just so happened that they were short-handed, so she quickly found a job.
Her parents actually doted on her quite a bit, at least they wouldn’t make her work part-time, as in the eyes of the two traditional elders, a student’s main task was to study. The issue of money should be handled by adults. Aside from their traditional side, Qiu Shuang could actually easily accept both of them.
They wanted her to become an obedient woman, but that wasn’t their problem, it was the problem of the era.
She was still growing up in a rebellious space, becoming her own person.
“Hello, $18.52.”
After expertly scanning the code, Qiu Shuang sighed. She actually wasn’t short of money; the money her parents gave her was perfectly enough, she could even save a little. She just simply liked the feeling of leaving home. After giving half of the money she earned to her parents as filial piety, she could keep the rest for herself.
And Qiu Shuang knew that the half she gave would be returned to her by her parents again someday in the future.
Working outside instead of staying at home, she could earn money and didn’t have to listen to the nagging at home. Her parents would also be happy and tell everyone that she was sensible and knew how to ease her parents’ burden.
Qiu Shuang was actually very savvy about social etiquette, but she didn’t want to engage in it. At least in her eyes, these things were not worth doing. She didn’t want to waste extra energy on these meaningless things.
Thinking of this, Qiu Shuang continued to expertly scan code after code, until she saw a familiar figure standing at the entrance.
It was Chen Wanjun. In fact, Qiu Shuang had almost forgotten how long it had been since they last met, two months or three months?
She thought she had forgotten the other person, but the long memory of the past echoed in her mind again.
“Long time no see.”
After the other person said this, she brushed past and began to purchase items normally. The communication between the two was completely like that of strangers who hadn’t seen each other for a long time, but this was exactly what Qiu Shuang wanted.
It wasn’t until after she got off work and changed out of her uniform that Qiu Shuang saw the familiar figure again.
Qiu Shuang didn’t know how long the other person had been waiting, nor what the other person was thinking. She just sat there silently, as if waiting for the final judgment.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m waiting for you.”
Hearing the other person say this, Qiu Shuang couldn’t help but laugh. She even felt that this scene was so familiar in the past.
She remembered that every night, she seemed to be quietly standing under the street lamp, waiting for the other person.
In high school, the head teachers of different classes always had slightly different times for evening self-study. She remembered the other person was 5 minutes later than her, so she would always wait under that street lamp for one 5-minute period after another.
So many long 5-minute periods. Qiu Shuang thought she had forgotten, but in fact, she remembered.
At that time, she didn’t feel the night was long, nor did she feel the coolness of spring, summer, autumn, or winter.
She only remembered how much she anticipated and how happy she was when the other person arrived while she was waiting under the light.
It wasn’t until the day they completely broke up that she walked on that road for a long, long time, and waited for a long, long time, but could never wait for the other person’s figure again.
The other person didn’t want to see her anymore.
“Do you have something to say?”
Chen Wanjun, sitting there, was silent for a moment after hearing the cold words from the other person. She recalled a very distant past; she, too, had been very much looking forward to the other person at that time.
In fact, the distance from the school to that street lamp was not far, but it was always so dark. Chen Wanjun was always afraid of the dark, but she always thought that someone was waiting for her not far ahead, and she wasn’t so afraid of the dark anymore.
However, it was what she deserved to have made things the way they were now. She was a coward who fled the battlefield, so she should bear all of this.
“I’m sorry, I really wanted to see you…”
Hearing the other person say this, Qiu Shuang was silent for a moment, and finally sat down beside Chen Wanjun. Neither of them said anything, they just quietly looked at the street lamp across the road. No one knew what was on their minds.
It wasn’t until the supermarket officially closed that the only light left in their eyes was the lamp across the street.
“In the past, you would always wait for me under the light.”
“Yes, but I won’t wait for you anymore.”
After saying this, Qiu Shuang left calmly. She didn’t feel like she owed anything; she was the one who could rightfully demand a debt, but she also didn’t want to look into the other person’s eyes and say those cruel words, because Qiu Shuang had to admit.
Qiu Shuang was not as heartless as Chen Wanjun.
When facing the person she once loved, she couldn’t bear to say those words. She really couldn’t be a bad person.
She wouldn’t say that her past happiness was a waste, nor would she say that everything she liked was fake, because that would be too cruel to the sincere, teenage self of the past.
Chen Wanjun, love always has an expiration date. Now, it has expired.
Qiu Shuang walked straight home. She didn’t turn back to look at the other person’s figure, or rather, she was afraid to look back and see the other person’s lost soul.
She respected her past self and didn’t want to insult her past self.
The holiday quickly passed. With the extra money in hand, Qiu Shuang returned to campus again.
For some reason, perhaps through the tempering of a holiday, the senior looked very different from before; at least she looked like she had more of a living person’s aura.
“Shuangshuang, I’m planning to write a new paper. What do you think of this topic?”
Regarding the other person, even in a private setting, she was still calling her intimately, but Qiu Shuang had no reaction. She could only sigh that the senior was too deeply immersed in the role, and that junior guy really messed up the senior badly.
“Well, I’m not in this major, so I might not understand much, but I think that with Senior’s intelligence, the title you come up with must be fine.”
Chen Jining had actually guessed Qiu Shuang’s answer, but she really wanted to find some common topic with the other person.
Except for the occasional dates and the appearances of a perfect girlfriend in the eyes of outsiders, there was actually seemingly zero communication between the two. They had different majors, different life goals, and different life paths.
So, what could she use to keep her?
A knock on the door sounded, and a familiar voice rang out.
“Shuangshuang, my mom asked me to bring a lot of local specialties. I brought them over for you and your roommate to try.”
Chen Jining listened to the word ‘roommate’ instead of ‘girlfriend’ from the other person and looked at Qiu Shuang. After Qiu Shuang gave her a look, Chen Jining understood what was going on.
Lu Chen was the person Qiu Shuang admired the most throughout her high school days. In Qiu Shuang’s eyes, he was always calm, rational, and could help solve any problem. If you had any problem, just find him, and he would help you solve it.
It was hard for Qiu Shuang to describe the other person with the beautiful words in the world, because no matter what words she used, Qiu Shuang always felt they were simply not worthy of the perfect other person.
But the other person would always appear kindly when she needed him. To some extent, Qiu Shuang liked the other person very much.
“Thank you very much, Auntie. By the way, this is what my mom brought me. Lu Chen, take it back and try it.”
Chen Jining smiled after seeing the interaction between the two. In the past six months of getting along, Chen Jining had actually figured out Qiu Shuang’s psychology.
Qiu Shuang was like a little tortoise. If you knock hard on its shell, it will retract inside and won’t come out, nor will it get angry. If you occasionally stroke it, it might poke its head out and feel very happy.
A typical avoidant personality.
Perhaps she was waiting for a truly gentle person, or waiting for someone who could break her shell, but it seemed unlikely to be her, no matter who it was.
