- Chapter 8 - Birthday - If only time could stop at this moment, how wonderful it would be..
Unfortunately, Chen Jining didn’t know what the other party had been through, or perhaps she really could have analyzed it for her.
After a brief greeting with Qiu Shuang, Lu Chen also exchanged a few simple words of inquiry with Chen Jining, ensuring neither coldness nor awkwardness, before turning and leaving.
“It seems she really is a sensible person.”
Following Chen Jining’s remark after the other party left, Qiu Shuang also nodded in agreement.
“Yes, she’s never too enthusiastic, nor too distant, but I think this is just right. It saves me the trouble of figuring out how to treat her.”
“But, why did she call me ‘roommate’ just now?”
Upon saying this, Qiu Shuang informed Chen Jining. When Chen Jining learned that Qiu Shuang had revealed to others that they were “contract girlfriends,” a trace of bitterness emerged in her heart. She should understand that the relationship between them could completely end the day the contract terminated.
She shouldn’t harbor any extra thoughts or nurture such wishful thinking.
Yet, she truly couldn’t restrain herself. She wasn’t satisfied with being a contract girlfriend but didn’t know how to take the next step.
In other words, both of them were people who retreated, both needing to take one more step forward. But precisely because they stood still, waiting for the other to move first, the resulting outcome was often that, in the long passage of time, one person would awaken and bravely take that step, or the two would simply part ways.
After all, the world is so vast, and time so immense, that others who dare to run will always cross paths with them.
“Yes, Senior. Don’t worry, Lu Chen is very tight-lipped and won’t expose our relationship.”
“No, no, I was thinking, I might be holding you back a bit. The way you maintain this so-called agreement with me seems to make it difficult for you to start a new relationship.”
“…I don’t think I have such intentions for now. Rather than saying I’m helping the Senior, it’s actually the Senior helping me. At least Wan Jun hasn’t contacted me for a long time, and if I don’t see her, I won’t miss her, and it’ll be easier to let go.”
Hmph, still calling her Wan Jun…
Hearing Qiu Shuang say this, Chen Jining lowered her head. The other party’s reasoning was indeed very sound. More importantly, Chen Wanjun was not a perfect person. If Chen Wanjun were perfect, then perhaps she would become the unerasable ‘white moonlight’ or ‘cinnabar mole’ in Qiu Shuang’s memory.
But who could have guessed?
The other party chose to escape, which, in Chen Jining’s eyes, was a very foolish act. But since she did it, she could only bear the consequences.
“Is that so? Then my decision was really wonderful, solving a pressing problem for both of us.”
For Qiu Shuang, the first year of university was uneventful. Although she could feel Song Ya’s harassment becoming more frequent, it wasn’t a big problem. After all, the other party was currently pretending to be a normal person and wouldn’t go so far as to do anything disgusting.
If possible, Qiu Shuang had actually considered spending three years together like this with the Senior. After the Senior graduated, she would quickly find an internship and work, and her university life could also end happily.
At this moment, Qiu Shuang didn’t know there was such a thing in the world called the “unexpected turns of life.”
As summer vacation approached, Qiu Shuang’s birthday was also imminent. In the past, Qiu Shuang didn’t really celebrate her birthday much, as her parents seemed to view it as something associated with showing off or rivalry.
Throughout the three years of high school and three years of middle school, Qiu Shuang had lost count of how many gifts Song Ya had compensated her with.
She still remembered the girl who, with a fierce expression, forcefully shoved a gift into her hand and ran away with blushing ears.
If only time could stop at that moment forever, how wonderful it would be. The girl with the blushing ears had long since changed her appearance.
Thinking of this, Qiu Shuang sighed. People should always look forward. Qiu Shuang was grateful for meeting so many people. Despite many unpleasant incidents in between, she was still thankful for the beautiful things she had encountered.
She genuinely loved this world and all beautiful things.
Returning to the dorm, Qiu Shuang saw a gift box stacked by the door. She didn’t know who sent it.
Qiu Shuang bent down, picked it up, took it inside, and tore open the packaging.
After fully opening the box and seeing what was inside, Qiu Shuang fell silent. It was a music box. It didn’t look meticulously crafted but evoked her past memories. Qiu Shuang already knew who sent this unsigned gift.
In high school, Qiu Shuang actually didn’t have much money. To prevent accidents, from then on, she had to report everything she wanted, and her pocket money was pitifully scarce. So, over the long season, Qiu Shuang saved up those small amounts of money bit by bit and bought a music box.
She felt that the two girls standing intimately in the music box looked very much like her and Chen Wanjun, so she bought it and gave it to her.
For Chen Wanjun, this was the first gift she had ever received in her life. She was her parents’ first child, and usually the first child is expected to carry the parents’ hopes, but her arrival seemingly didn’t bring joy to the family, because she was a girl.
At least from Chen Wanjun’s childhood memories, her parents weren’t very close to her. Her name was chosen by her grandmother, who hoped she would be a graceful lady. But facts proved her grandmother’s expectations wrong.
How could someone poor and ambitious possibly become a graceful lady?
Or perhaps Chen Wanjun knew the truth of the world. In the world of the lower class, a graceful lady represented a resource, representing being eaten by others. She didn’t want to be eaten.
Chen Wanjun received the first gift in her life. Perhaps it seemed cheap from a future perspective, but to the young girl, it was very precious. She treasured this gift, even though its fate was to be shattered by her younger brother.
Chen Wanjun thought, perhaps this was the first time she had ever been truly angry. She angrily pushed the other party away and went to pick up the broken pieces on the floor, trying to put them back together. But broken glass could never be put back together; it merely pierced her fingertips.
The result was that she was fiercely reprimanded and lost her dinner.
“What exactly are you thinking in your heart?”
Looking at this familiar gift, Qiu Shuang was silent. She didn’t know what the sender wanted to do. Did they want to use this to awaken past memories?
“Is it to make me soften my heart?”
Qiu Shuang didn’t know the answer to this question. Outside, the rain was falling continuously.
She looked out the window and thought she saw a familiar figure standing downstairs, but quickly, that figure disappeared.
Qiu Shuang thought, perhaps this was the most unforgettable birthday of her life, or something else. As a contract girlfriend, Chen Jining naturally prepared a gift as well. But seeing the test papers the other party brought out, Qiu Shuang was momentarily speechless.
Qiu Shuang looked at the gift in the other person’s hand. Today was indeed the most special birthday of her life. Could she throw it out the window?
“This is…”
“Your professional course grades are unstable, because you’ve been too playful. To ensure you can get the next scholarship, I personally suggest you consolidate your knowledge.”
“Thank you, Senior…”
“Alright, just kidding. This is the real gift.”
Seeing Qiu Shuang’s wry smile, Chen Jining took out another gift box from behind her. Upon receiving the gift, Qiu Shuang was a little confused. After seeing the other party’s eager eyes, she unwrapped the box. Inside was a beautiful necklace.
“Senior, why did you suddenly give me this? It looks expensive…”
“It’s not very expensive. Just accept it, since I’m your contract girlfriend, I should buy you something. Besides, you don’t have class this afternoon, do you? The weather has cleared up, let’s go out and wander around.”
Still in a daze, Qiu Shuang was pulled out by Chen Jining. Looking at the slightly damp ground, Chen Jining felt a little regretful. It was a shame it rained, otherwise, she could have taken her to an amusement park.
Now, they could only go somewhere else.
Upon arriving at the indoor activity plaza, Qiu Shuang curiously looked around. Her attention was instantly caught by the small train driving across the floor. Chen Jining also noticed what she wanted.
“Go on, ride it once.”
“Ah, but…”
Qiu Shuang didn’t finish her sentence. She felt a bit embarrassed, or perhaps that it seemed a little childish for an adult to compete with children for a toy.
Chen Jining seemed to see the worry in her heart, smiled, and then walked forward.
“Come on, just consider it keeping me company.”
So, the two of them rode the spinning small train in the leisurely plaza. Qiu Shuang felt extremely happy today. She got to ride the small train she had always wanted. When she was very young, her mother thought such things were meaningless for her studies, so she wasn’t allowed to ride them. Her father also felt that it would be better to buy some practice problems with that money.
It was almost laughable that she was already an adult, fulfilling her dream in this environment.
Just as Qiu Shuang was enjoying herself, the frequent bombing of messages on her phone caught her attention.
Qiu Shuang tapped the screen to see Lu Chen’s red envelope and message of concern, followed by Song Ya’s barrage of destructive greetings.
“Where are you? Why aren’t you in the dorm???”
Seeing the other party’s string of questions made Qiu Shuang even more confused. If she remembered correctly, Song Ya had a full day of classes this afternoon. Why would she run out of school to see her?
“Song Ya, don’t you have a full day of classes today?”
“I took a leave of absence for you! And you made me come all this way for nothing!”
Left with no choice, Qiu Shuang could only tell her she was out with Chen Jining. She didn’t want to experience being inexplicably surrounded by strangers again.
Upon seeing Qiu Shuang’s reply, Song Ya almost threw her phone. That annoying Chen Jining! What kind of Senior is she, relying on being one year older to put on airs of supposed maturity, and even going to an amusement park to ride a small train? Hmph, she could pull off such childish tricks too!
Scheming woman!
