- Chapter 2 - Rival, Childhood Sweetheart and Sudden Appearance
Qiu Shuang didn’t have any thoughts about Song Ya’s decision, nor could she, as in the eyes of both their parents, they were supposed to be “sisters.”
Lying in bed, Qiu Shuang began to contemplate her future. She didn’t know what the future held, or what kind of life she yearned for. Qiu Shuang just felt that living in the present was enough, and it would be even better if the person beside her, who was constantly chattering, was no longer in her life.
Song Ya hugged Qiu Shuang tightly, burying her head in the other’s neck. Her mouth seemed to be muttering something.
“Don’t like her anymore, like me, okay…”
Seeing Qiu Shuang motionless and seemingly completely asleep, Song Ya sighed, then picked up the phone next to her.
So what if Chen Wanjun was beautiful and excellent? So what if she was brought home? She still couldn’t be kept, and wasn’t Qiu Shuang still in her bed? The thought made Song Ya very happy.
She snapped a photo of herself and Qiu Shuang lying together and sent it to a certain person.
Chen Wanjun was still in bed, contemplating her major life decisions, when a notification popped up on her phone, leaving her somewhat confused. She clicked it open and saw it was that dead person, Song Ya. She and Song Ya had always been incompatible, practically born enemies.
Clicking it open and seeing the other party’s smug look made her even angrier.
Giving Shuangshuang such a tacky cartoon pajama? If it were her, she would have given her…
This thought had just risen before she ruthlessly suppressed it. Wake up, what on earth am I thinking! I’ve already driven her away, so I must make a clean break.
Chen Wanjun lay in bed all night without sleep, staring at the ceiling. She was seriously contemplating some issues. As a top student who was always first in her class, she was naturally smarter than others and understood certain things about so-called hormones.
These irrelevant physiological phenomena, from a scientific perspective, proved one thing: she seemed to quite like Qiu Shuang, or at least her body accepted her. However, from the perspective of social tradition, it was always boys and girls who were together, so she couldn’t be with Qiu Shuang.
The combination of men and women was the natural order, and the cost-effectiveness of a same-sex relationship was far lower than that between a man and a woman.
How should she choose between her dreams and love?
Chen Wanjun didn’t know. After that, she blocked Qiu Shuang.
Song Ya looked at the recipient of the message, who remained silent. Song Ya tossed her phone aside and, holding Qiu Shuang, fell into a sweet dream. Thus, she missed the opening of the person in her arms’ eyes and the quiet word:
“Disgusting.”
At that time, they were all too young, always mistaking fleeting things for forever, and never realizing that what was truly pure and beautiful had long since disappeared.
September’s golden autumn was the time for a new batch of university freshmen to enroll, symbolizing their first step into society, formally stepping onto the university campus.
A young girl carrying luggage stood at the school gate, her face full of worry. Passersby couldn’t help but turn back to look at her. She had an extraordinarily beautiful face, along with a ridiculously childish and tacky outfit.
Qiu Shuang looked at the red exclamation mark on her phone, which indicated that her message could never be sent, and said nothing.
A phone call suddenly came in. Qiu Shuang saw the caller ID “Song Ya,” her brow furrowed tightly, but muscle memory made her answer quickly.
“It’s me, Ya Ya. What’s wrong with registration today?”
Song Ya’s voice came from the other end of the line.
Qiu Shuang was already accustomed to the other party’s intuition and didn’t find it strange, nor did she reply, just quietly listening to her next sentence.
“I just heard that Chen Wanjun blocked you. What happened?”
Qiu Shuang thought for a moment, raised an eyebrow, and then replied to the other party.
“…I don’t know, maybe because of those rumors. Ya Ya, which university did you go to?”
“Me? You still don’t know? You haven’t checked my Moments? Xx Dance Academy! We’re in the same city, we can continue to be good friends and hang out together!”
Qiu Shuang heard the cheerful laughter from the other end of the phone, said nothing, but felt a wave of nausea.
She was dismissive of Song Ya’s inexplicable personality shift; the other party was a master at playing the role of a “good girlfriend.” Qiu Shuang had arrived at the dorm early to organize her things, saving Song Ya the trouble of running over to help her with her luggage.
However, when she looked at the bunk opposite, Qiu Shuang was still a bit surprised. She had arrived early enough, but she didn’t expect someone to be even earlier than her.
Halfway through organizing, the roommate who had already registered and disappeared returned. The moment the other party stepped into the room, Qiu Shuang’s eyes lit up. The person exuded an unreachable, icy feeling. It wasn’t that Qiu Shuang was a masochist; it was just that she liked people like this the most. It was good if they didn’t like to talk; that way, everyone could live their own dorm life.
She was truly afraid of talking to people now.
“Chen Jining, Psychiatry.”
Qiu Shuang was a little surprised to hear that the other person’s major was different from her own, then nodded. Maybe she was the one who was left alone, so she was grouped with other majors.
“Qiu Shuang, Finance.”
Chen Jining looked at the somewhat indifferent girl in front of her. It seemed the other party might have had some psychological trauma; otherwise, she shouldn’t have reacted like this since she entered the room.
Chen Jining had originally been troubled by having to study and research information from books, but now, in a way, it counted as early practice…
Qiu Shuang lay on her bed and closed her eyes, preparing to rest for a bit. She didn’t pay any mind to this so-called roommate. It would be best if they just minded their own business, especially since they weren’t in the same major.
In a daze, she seemed to dream of the past.
Good luck with the college entrance exam!
The red banner was pulled up behind the classroom. The decreasing countdown was written on the blackboard. Everyone was writing frantically, striving for a good score, but Qiu Shuang was not. She sat by the window seat, staring blankly outside, watching the younger students run freely on the playground.
In the sunlight, the girl’s face was reflected on the glass. She was a beauty, with a pair of peach blossom eyes, thin cherry lips, a smooth, high nose bridge, and two sweet dimples when she smiled. But her slightly downturned lips also carried a hint of bitterness, making her both lovable and giving her a hazy sense of fragility.
“What’s wrong, Shuangshuang?”
Her deskmate’s call pulled her drifting thoughts back.
“Nothing, Lu Chen…”
Qiu Shuang only felt that she was quite lucky; her deskmate was a top student and a genuinely nice person. However, Qiu Shuang kept wondering why Wanjun suddenly stopped replying to her messages.
Lu Chen just smiled, looking at Qiu Shuang who said “nothing” but was still spaced out. Her good deskmate was always like this. She might study wholeheartedly for five out of ten days, and the rest of the time was just so-so. Fortunately, God gave her a good brain, so she didn’t get scolded.
“Alright, the college entrance exam is coming up, you should pay attention.”
Qiu Shuang turned back to look at her deskmate. Lu Chen was a relatively tall girl, slender and very gentle, with fair skin, giving people a very intelligent feeling. Qiu Shuang liked the warmth and infinite tolerance she felt from Lu Chen, that close intimacy was like coming home.
“Okay…”
So, when did everything start to change?
Qiu Shuang felt that she might be broken. Why did she inexplicably smile whenever she thought of that person? Why did she always want to inexplicably get closer to her? It wasn’t until she researched a lot of information that Qiu Shuang realized a fact: she was unlucky enough to fall in love with her “friend.”
Qiu Shuang wasn’t sure what impact becoming a lesbian would have on her life. She thought, since she wanted to do it, she would. Looking at the faint white scars on her arm, she just remained silent.
In school, Qiu Shuang, Chen Wanjun, and Song Ya were the best of friends, like a trio of wild girls. According to geometry, a triangle is the most stable shape, but in reality, things went against expectations.
In Qiu Shuang’s words, the two of them were like two wolves on a wasteland, each occupying their own territory, and Qiu Shuang stood in the middle, ending up being disliked by both, at least at certain moments, they would form a united front.
On the small market street outside the school gate, Chen Wanjun complained about Song Ya’s ill intentions while criticizing Qiu Shuang.
“Why are you eating this junk food again? The college entrance exam is coming soon, aren’t you afraid of getting sick?”
“But it’s delicious…”
“Heh, don’t you know what’s more important?”
Seeing Chen Wanjun’s expression start to turn cold, in order to escape the next round of lecturing, Qiu Shuang threw the half-eaten kao leng mian (a type of grilled cold noodles) into the trash can.
“Fine, I won’t eat it.”
Only then did Chen Wanjun show a satisfied smile, and then continued talking about Song Ya.
“If you ask me, she’s so rich, why are you hanging out with her? If she doesn’t make it this time, she can just try again next year. How many ‘next years’ do you have to waste, do you know that?”
“Okay, I know…”
But will she let me go? Qiu Shuang looked towards the distant, unclear horizon.
“I advise you to study hard, score a few more points, and maybe you can go to a better school and study a better major…”
Chen Wanjun was earnestly and “sincerely” advising Qiu Shuang, while Qiu Shuang’s thoughts slowly drifted away. She wasn’t thinking about her future life; her gaze gradually shifted back to Chen Wanjun.
Chen Wanjun was beautiful, visibly beautiful. Otherwise, Qiu Shuang thought, if it weren’t for this beauty, it would be difficult for her to continue staying by her side.
Qiu Shuang looked at her. Chen Wanjun had an extreme kind of feminine beauty, different from the fragile, “white moonlight” quality of Qiu Shuang. Chen Wanjun’s beauty was aggressive. Her mother came from a distant region, perhaps a mix of blood from across half of China, which made her appearance distinctly different from ordinary locals. She possessed a high nose bridge, deep-set eyes, and long eyelashes. Chen Wanjun was looking at Qiu Shuang very seriously, telling her all her grand principles.
After talking for a long time, Chen Wanjun realized that Qiu Shuang wasn’t paying attention at all, which instantly angered her. She then patted the other’s shoulder.
“What are you looking at?”
“You’re beautiful.”
“…”
Upon hearing this, Chen Wanjun instantly cooled down and then walked forward.
The sunset cast the silhouettes of the two girls longer and longer. As the two walked further away, another figure stood silently under the tree, watching them depart. Song Ya clenched her fists tightly. When she opened her hand, several crescent-shaped marks were visible on her palm.
“So, you chose her?”
