I Heard I’m a Scummy Alpha? [Transmigration] - Chapter 49.2
“Since it was out of concern for Yan Zui, I’ll let it slide this time.” Qi Yunwei gave her a friendly smile, put away the license, and left.
Remembering how Qi Yunwei had helped her out of a tough spot just the other day, Shen now felt mortified at having misunderstood her like this.
She slunk back to the secretary’s office. Assistant Peng had just returned from lunch and greeted her. When she didn’t respond, he looked over curiously and found her staring blankly into space. “What’s wrong?”
Shen slowly lifted her eyes. “I said something wrong to Miss Qi.”
With no one else in the office, Peng pulled up a chair, intrigued. “What did you say? Didn’t Miss Qi go to driving school? When did you even run into her?”
Listlessly, Shen recounted their entire exchange. After listening, Peng frowned. “Finishing all the tests in one day? That has to be a joke. You didn’t suspect anything?”
“But the license was real,” Shen insisted. “I checked carefully. It was definitely hers.”
“You’re too naïve,” Peng said firmly. “Anything can be faked these days, right down to the last detail. Unless she’s lying about finishing all four subjects in a day, the license has to be fake.”
Shen wavered, starting to feel half-convinced.
“But Miss Qi doesn’t strike me as that kind of person. Why would she bother faking a license?” Shen asked, confused.
“To win President Yan’s favor, obviously. Once she has a license, won’t President Yan buy her a luxury car? We’ll see what she shows up driving in a few days.”
Peng stood up, stretching. “Anyway, I need a nap. You should grab something to eat.”
Still full of doubts, Shen went to the cafeteria. By then it was already past one, and the place was nearly empty.
After picking up her food, she turned to find a seat and spotted Yan Zui’s bodyguard, Zhou Xiao.
She’d always found this simple, good-natured bodyguard likable. With the spot next to him free, she walked over. “Zhou Xiao, mind if I sit here?”
Halfway through his meal and scrolling on his phone, Zhou Xiao looked up at her with a smile. “Go ahead.”
They ate quietly for a while, until Zhou Xiao suddenly let out a loud exclamation. “Unbelievable! That’s my friend.”
Curious, Shen glanced over. Zhou Xiao was staring at his phone with awe. “What happened?”
“Nothing major.” He tried to sound modest, though his face radiated pride. “I introduced a friend to a driving school two days ago. She signed up for an express course. Guess what?”
“What?” Shen asked instinctively. Don’t tell me she also passed everything in one day.
“Yesterday, she cleared all four subjects. Today, she got her license! The coach I referred her to was so thrilled he even posted about it on his feed. Now the whole school knows about her—calls her a genius!”
Shen: “…” No way. It can’t be that coincidental.
“Look—her coach even put on a suit and tie just to take a photo with her.” Zhou Xiao handed over his phone.
On the screen was Qi Yunwei’s face.
“Zhou Xiao, your friend is Miss Qi?” Shen asked weakly.
Zhou Xiao rubbed his nose and chuckled. “Yeah. Even though Yunwei’s an Alpha, she’s really easygoing. Never once looked down on me for being a Beta. She and President Yan even had me over for dinner once. Their cooking is amazing.”
Watching Zhou Xiao’s blissful expression, Shen fell silent once more.
So, Qi Yunwei’s cooking was really this good? No wonder President Yan insisted on eating the lunches she made every single day.
She really shouldn’t have listened to Assistant Peng and doubted Qi Yunwei. President Yan had already bought her a car long ago; there was no need for Yunwei to fake a driver’s license just to get one.
If the gossip group ever found out about this, they’d be absolutely stunned. Who would’ve thought that the “useless” Qi Yunwei could pass her driving test all in a single day?
Calling her impressive would be an understatement.
Compared to her, Secretary Shen suddenly felt like she was the real failure.
The car wouldn’t be ready for a while—it’d at least have to wait until after their vacation.
Originally, the plan was to dedicate the entire week to practice driving. Who knew she’d overperform and get it all done in a day? Now, Yunwei had to find something else to keep herself busy with.
[Xiaoman, I remember the novel spans decades. Were there any mentions of frustrated painters, late-blooming writers, undiscovered computer prodigies? Or any other types of overlooked talents? Tell me everything.]
【Master, Xiaoman found them! The novel does mention such people!】
【Xiaoman searched and identified five candidates: First, the computer genius Wu Baizhi. He hasn’t touched a computer yet, but when he enters college, he’ll pick one up, teach himself, and within a year become a top-level expert. Later, major tech companies will deem him a massive threat, join forces to crush his startup, and in the end, he’ll be buried in debt and leap to his death.】
【Then there’s Meng Yin, the painter. In college, she was falsely accused of plagiarism by a classmate and dragged through a public scandal. For three years, she never touched a paintbrush. After losing both parents, she lived alone, picked up her brushes again to fight the loneliness, and began creating the comic Defier of Heaven. Its dazzling colors and bizarre storylines sparked huge attention. But Meng Yin was plagued by depression, and malicious reviews only worsened it. A year later, she threw herself from a building.】
【Next is the gifted screenwriter Shi Zhongluan. After offending a famous director, he was blacklisted by the entire film industry. With no income, his apprentices all abandoned him. Eventually, he died destitute in a car accident.】
【There’s also Ke Bolin, an advertising genius who saved three failing companies from collapse. But after discovering his wife’s affair, he was beaten by her lover and left paralyzed, sinking into despair.】
【Lastly, Liu Xie, who dropped out of Bofali Conservatory of Music. He was a brilliant composer and once a wealthy second-generation heir. After a sudden disaster destroyed his family, he couldn’t bear the blow. Returning home from abroad, he slit his wrists. After his death, his compositions were discovered, turned into songs, and went viral worldwide.】
Chi Yunwei: “Which one am I supposed to save first?”
【Liu Xie. Next month, on the 25th, his family will host a reunion. Everyone will be there except him, since he’s still abroad. After a night of revelry, everyone will fall asleep drunk. Around midnight, lightning will strike a tree near the villa, starting a fire. The entire family will perish.】
[So there’s still more than a month.]
Chi Yunwei said: [Xiaoman, tell me more about Liu Xie’s family.]
【Of course, Master.】
After listening, Yunwei formed a plan.
The Liu family was also a wealthy business family, even collaborating with subsidiaries of the Yan Corporation. The reason for the reunion was to celebrate their long-term supply contract with the Yan Corporation—ten years of guaranteed business.
Once she and Yan Zui returned from vacation, she could deal with it properly, and aboveboard.
But for now, there was nothing left to do.
Just as Yunwei was about to turn on the TV for a bit of entertainment, her phone rang. The caller ID showed Feng Yue.
It had only been four or five days since their last contact. Had Feng Yue already found something?
Yunwei answered, “Hello?”
“Miss Qi, this is Feng Yue.”
His voice sounded low, heavy.
“Doesn’t sound like things went well for you,” Yunwei remarked.
Feng Yue said, “Miss Qi, last time you told me that Qin Feili always kept Lingling’s bracelet close to him. So I tried everything to check his personal belongings. Yesterday, I finally managed to invite him to the sauna. I took the chance to go through everything he wore—even checked his shoes. But I found nothing. When we bathed, we were face to face. I can be sure: there wasn’t a single accessory on him.”
He hesitated. “Miss Qi, could you have remembered wrong? Maybe the bracelet’s somewhere else?”
Yunwei shook her head. “No. Qin Feili definitely kept it close. I don’t know him and I’ve never been able to approach him. Mr. Feng, think carefully—what is something Qin Feili never parts with, even when bathing? Something so ordinary you might overlook it.”
The only clue Yunwei had was that single line from the novel: kept close at all times.
Whether the bracelet was found or not would depend entirely on Feng Yue’s insight.
Silence filled the line—only Feng Yue’s breathing could be heard.
Suddenly, his breath hitched, then grew rapid. “Miss Qi, I think I know. But I’ll need to confirm it.”
Three days later, while Yunwei and Yan Zui were having dinner, Feng Yue called again.
Yunwei put him on speaker.
His voice was hoarse, as if he had just cried. “Miss Qi, you were right. Qin Feili really did keep the bracelet close.”
“Twenty-five years ago, Qin Feili avenged me against Wang Renzhi. He came back injured, and though he had surgery, his leg never healed. Since then, he’s relied on a cane.”
“That cane’s been by his side for twenty-five years. Every time I saw it, I reminded myself of the price Qin Feili paid for me, that I must always be grateful. I never imagined—the bracelet was hidden in that cane all along.”
His voice broke. “All these years, I’ve mistaken my enemy for my benefactor. I, Feng Yue, am nothing but a fool—the biggest fool in the world. I failed Lingling.”
“This isn’t your fault,” Yan Zui suddenly cut in.
Feng Yue froze, recognizing her voice. “And this is?”
“Don’t worry, Mr. Feng,” Yunwei said calmly. “President Yan won’t breathe a word of this.”
“So, President Yan and Miss Qi, you two, I understand now.” Feng Yue’s tone shifted, as though something clicked in his mind.
Chi Yunwei: “?” Understand what? What exactly do you ‘know’?
Yan Zui’s pale face tightened, her voice cold. “If you need help, Mr. Feng, contact me through Chi Yunwei. I’ll assist however I can.”
Hearing the suppressed anger in her voice, Feng Yue’s own trembled. “Thank you, President Yan. Thank you, Miss Qi. I truly hope the two of you live a happy life together, bound forever, till death do you part.”
Qi Yunwei: “…”
Wait. Wasn’t this conversation supposed to be heavy and tragic? How did it end up here?
Yan Zui replied evenly, “We will. Thank you.”
Qi Yunwei’s eyes widened in shock. Wait—was that really something you were supposed to admit out loud?
