I Got Together With the Fake Heiress - Chapter 27
Could Wen Yunqing possibly have something to do with the board member’s accident?
This somewhat preposterous thought only flashed in Wen Yimeng’s mind for a moment before she quickly dismissed it.
Although the person who had the accident was a Ruihua board member, he didn’t live at Ruihua. So what if Wen Yunqing was at Ruihua at night? She couldn’t fly, so how could she possibly be involved in something like that!
Wen Yimeng subconsciously searched the crowd for Wen Yunqing. After scanning the area, she quickly spotted Wen Yunqing… and Lu Zhiming standing next to her. The two seemed to be discussing something.
“If I had known that person would cause so much trouble, I would have just let the ghost tear him apart,” Lu Zhiming said expressionlessly, with a hint of apology in her tone. “I heard that pressure is already being put on Captain Shen. If those people approach you, you don’t need to tell them anything. I’ll handle it.”
Wen Yunqing nodded. “I understand. Please tell Officer Shen that if she can’t hold out, I have a method that is permanent. If she’s interested, she can come find me.”
“Oh?” Lu Zhiming raised an eyebrow. “Are you planning to do that?”
“If they cross my bottom line, I’ll take action.” Wen Yunqing and Lu Zhiming had no trouble communicating, as they were very much in sync regarding certain ideas.
“The way you put it, I don’t know whether I should hope they annoy you or not.” A smile appeared on Lu Zhiming’s face. “Your sister seems to be looking for you. I won’t bother you any longer.”
Wen Yunqing followed Lu Zhiming’s gaze and quickly saw Wen Yimeng pouting, looking displeased.
Suppressing the urge to smile, Wen Yunqing strode over to her side. “Let’s go home.”
“You’re going home now?” Wen Yimeng huffed. “You and Teacher Lu seem to be very close. What were you talking about just now?”
“Hmm, we were just discussing the things I couldn’t tell you before,” Wen Yunqing thought for a moment. “Do you want to know about it?”
“If you don’t want to say it, don’t say it. I don’t want to know right now,” Wen Yimeng said.
At this time, saying no meant yes, so Wen Yunqing silently translated her words internally. Then, familiar with the routine, she took Wen Yimeng’s hand and began organizing her thoughts while walking toward the gate.
“Are you a materialist?” Wen Yunqing asked. Stating things directly was definitely out of the question; she needed to gauge Wen Yimeng’s acceptance level.
“Are you asking if I believe in ghosts in this world?” Wen Yimeng raised an eyebrow. “I don’t really believe it. If ghosts really exist, why can murderers still live well? Why can so many bad people escape the grasp of the law?”
Wen Yunqing couldn’t help but nod as she listened. Considering things from the perspective of an average person, Wen Yimeng’s words were indeed logical.
“Actually, I have a little bit of research into metaphysics. That night, I stayed at school to discuss some matters with Lu Zhiming,” Wen Yunqing said cautiously.
“Teacher Lu discusses metaphysics with you?” Wen Yimeng’s face was full of disbelief. In her eyes, Lu Zhiming was a top physics graduate. A physics graduate interested in metaphysics? Could Newton’s coffin lid still be held down?!
“You don’t believe me?” Wen Yunqing raised an eyebrow. “When have I ever lied to you?”
Wen Yimeng carefully recalled. It seemed Wen Yunqing really hadn’t lied to her before.
“The metaphysics you’re talking about, is it research into the I Ching?” Wen Yimeng asked, trying to bring the subject back to a normal realm.
“Lu Zhiming probably is, but I’m not. What I research is…” Wen Yunqing pondered for a moment. “Something relatively miraculous that exists between heaven and earth.”
Wen Yimeng fell silent. She understood every single word Wen Yunqing said, but why did she not understand when they were strung together? What were “miraculous things that exist between heaven and earth”? Could there really be ghosts in this world?
The topic dropped as the two walked out of the school gates. Before Wen Yimeng could see the car coming to pick her up, she spotted another woman on the periphery—a woman who was overly familiar and who brought her a great deal of fear.
“What’s wrong?” Feeling her hand being tightly grasped, Wen Yunqing turned her head to ask. “Are you feeling unwell?”
“N-no, I’m not.” Wen Yimeng forced herself to look away, trying not to think about the person she had just seen.
But sometimes, avoidance is not a solution. After Wen Yimeng got into the car to pick them up, her phone received a message. Upon seeing the content, her face instantly went several shades paler.
“What text message did you see?” Wen Yunqing immediately noticed the anomaly, her eyebrows slightly furrowed. “Blackmail or a threat?”
Wen Yimeng subconsciously hid her phone. “No, nothing. It’s an unimportant spam message.”
“But the expression on your face isn’t telling me that.” With such an obvious excuse, Wen Yunqing naturally spotted the problem instantly. “Yimeng, are you afraid of something?”
Wen Yimeng remained silent, tightly clutching her phone, avoiding Wen Yunqing’s gaze.
This obvious gesture of avoidance confirmed what Wen Yunqing had just said: Wen Yimeng was afraid, afraid of the person who sent the text message.
Wen Yunqing didn’t press further but patted her shoulder and said, “Don’t be afraid. I will always stand by your side.”
Wen Yimeng was silent for about three minutes, then spoke in a very small voice. “Really?”
“Of course,” Wen Yunqing nodded.
“What if I stood against the whole world? Would you still stand by my side?” As soon as the words left her mouth, Wen Yimeng felt utterly stupid. How could she have asked such a ridiculous question!
“Then there must be a huge problem with the world. I would stand by your side and then properly teach them how to be decent people,” Wen Yunqing said with a very serious demeanor, not finding the question ridiculous at all.
As long as one’s strength is great enough, even if you are wrong, you will ultimately be deemed right. Just like her in her previous life, no matter what she said, there would be a group of people agreeing with her.
“Really?” Wen Yimeng blinked, confirming repeatedly.
“Tell me, what do you need me to do?” Wen Yunqing asked.
Wen Yimeng rubbed her eyes with the back of her hand. “I don’t need you to do anything. Just remember what you said just now.”
After speaking, Wen Yimeng unlocked her phone again, immediately deleting the message she had just received and adding the number to the blacklist.
She was about to turn eighteen soon, and her household registration was with the Wen family. Unless she was abandoned by everyone in the Wen family, so what if that woman came looking for her? Could she forcefully make her drop out of school and lock her up in the countryside?
Back at the Wen house, Wen Yimeng’s mood had mostly stabilized. She showed no signs of abnormality when greeting Mrs. Wen.
“You’ve all worked hard. I specially asked the maid to cook your favorite dishes. Come quickly,” Mrs. Wen said with a smiling greeting. Her mood brightened further seeing her two daughters sitting on either side of her.
“Mom, is it just the three of us eating tonight?” Wen Yunqing asked, using her chopsticks to pick up some lean meat and place a piece in both Mrs. Wen’s and Wen Yimeng’s bowls.
“Yes, your father and brother are both on a business trip to the capital, and they probably won’t be back until the twenty-seventh or twenty-eighth of the lunar month.” Mrs. Wen smiled, her eyes crinkling, greatly appreciating Wen Yunqing’s gesture.
“It’s still early for the New Year. How do you plan to arrange your holiday?” Mrs. Wen asked.
Wen Yunqing thought for a moment. “I don’t have any specific plans. I might go shopping or see a movie with Yimeng when we have time.”
“Since we’re all free, why don’t we go out and buy some New Year’s goods together these next few days?” Wen Yimeng suggested.
Mrs. Wen nodded in agreement. “Good idea. Then this year we’ll go buy the New Year’s goods ourselves, and we can get you two some new clothes then too.”
The dinner with just the three women was very harmonious. After eating, they sat together on the sofa and watched television for a while, until ten o’clock when they each returned to their rooms.
The two walked up to the third floor together. Just as Wen Yunqing was about to head to her room, she felt her sleeve being pulled.
“What is it?” Wen Yunqing turned her head to ask.
“Come here,” Wen Yimeng said softly. “Come to my room.”
“Hmm, is Darling Yimeng inviting me to sleep with you?” Wen Yunqing’s eyes immediately widened.
Wen Yimeng slowly exhaled. “I have something very important to tell you. Do you want to hear it?”
“Of course, Darling Yimeng, I’ll listen to whatever you say.” Wen Yunqing said with a smile, directly gripping Wen Yimeng’s hand and leading her toward the room.
Wen Yimeng glanced down, then allowed Wen Yunqing to pull her back into the room.
“The person who sent me the text message today is Li Hong,” Wen Yimeng said as soon as the door closed.
“Li Hong?” Wen Yunqing frowned. “Who is she?”
“You don’t know Li Hong?” Wen Yimeng’s eyes were filled with shock. “Did you never know the name of your… adoptive parents?”
Wen Yunqing was silent for three seconds before realizing. “It’s her. I’ve been with my maternal grandmother since I was small and haven’t seen her many times, so naturally, I wouldn’t pay attention to her name.”
Wen Yimeng was at a loss for words. Wen Yunqing’s reaction instantly disrupted the speech she had been preparing for a long time.
“I saw her at the school gate today. She’s probably here to ask me for money,” Wen Yimeng took a deep breath, deciding to blurt everything out.
“She found me when I was in junior high. She approached me under the guise of a classmate’s parent, occasionally hinting at the plight of her ‘child’ and trying to elicit sympathy from me.”
“I didn’t think much of it at the time, just felt sorry for her, and gave her some small money. Once we got familiar, she came to me with a paternity test, saying that she and I were the real mother and daughter, and told me to obey her.”
Reaching this point, Wen Yimeng closed her eyes, trying to suppress her habitual resistance and fear. “If I didn’t listen, she would tell Mom the truth, send me to the countryside, and make me live with an elderly person who had… issues with their head. When I became an adult, I would be married off to an old man, for the rest of my life…”
“Alright, I know.” Wen Yunqing interrupted her, pulling the slightly trembling Wen Yimeng into an embrace.
“If she had found me now, I wouldn’t be scared. I would tell Mom and Dad the truth,” Wen Yimeng buried her head in Wen Yunqing’s shoulder.
“But… but I was really scared back then. I didn’t want to be sent to the countryside. I wanted to stay in the Wen family and be the little princess spoiled by the family,” Wen Yimeng said, her voice laced with a slight sob.
“Wen Yunqing, can you really forgive me?” Wen Yimeng asked. She felt terrified just hearing about that situation, let alone Wen Yunqing, the one who had actually experienced it.
“You did nothing wrong. You don’t need my forgiveness,” Wen Yunqing gently patted her back and softly comforted her. “The one who is wrong is Li Hong. She was the one who switched us, she was the one who threw me into the countryside, and she was the one who deliberately threatened and scared you. You did nothing wrong.”
Wen Yimeng was only a junior high school student four years ago. Facing a prepared Li Hong, what could she have done? It was already commendable that she had retained her kindness until now.
Wen Yimeng sniffled. “But… but the person who should have experienced all that was me. I am Li Hong’s child, I…” “Sired but never raised. A person like that is unworthy of being a mother,” Wen Yunqing stated. “Wen Yimeng, remember this: you only have two identities now.”
“One, you are a child of the Wen family, and two, you are my beloved. Do you understand?”
