- Chapter 26 - Causing Trouble for Bad Guys and Such
“Me?” Seeing the vicious ghost’s hair stand on end from the shock, Wen Yunqing laughed without reservation. “I am naturally without sect or school.”
“My mood is pretty good today, so I’ll give you one more chance to choose,” Wen Yunqing said with a smile, wondering if her Darling Yimeng was asleep now, and if she was, whether Wen Yunqing was present in her dream.
Ghosts who are able to become vicious ghosts usually have human lives on their hands. This particular ghost was no exception. Seeing Wen Yunqing’s obvious distraction, she immediately seized the opportunity, channeling all her strength to lash out at Wen Yunqing’s neck.
Wen Yunqing directly flicked out the prepared Heavenly Thunder Talisman. Before the vicious ghost could even get close, an arm-thick bolt of lightning struck the ghost directly.
The half-red, half-black vicious ghost instantly turned grayish-black. Accompanied by white smoke rising from her body, her form began to dissipate and fade away bit by bit.
Just before her soul completely scattered, Wen Yunqing saw the ghost’s distorted features revert to their original appearance. She looked like a fair-faced young girl. With an expression of release, she completely vanished from the world.
This female ghost likely had a troubled past, and perhaps becoming a vicious ghost was unavoidable. But none of that concerned Wen Yunqing. She had uncharacteristically given the opponent two chances today, and yet the ghost still didn’t cherish them.
Wen Yunqing acted quickly. It took only half an hour from discovering the vicious ghost to resolving it. After confirming that the ghost’s soul had scattered, she turned and walked toward the girls’ dormitory.
“Don’t you want revenge?” Shen Ling said seriously. “Or do you want to become the very people you despise, using your abilities to persecute these innocent students?”
“No, we don’t! We aren’t that trash!” The two female ghosts sounded extremely agitated, radiating cold energy.
Lu Zhiming, standing off to the side, quickly slapped a talisman onto Shen Ling’s back to prevent her from being harmed by the ghosts’ yin energy.
“If that’s the case, you should stop, let go of your obsession, and… and reincarnate, giving yourselves a chance,” Shen Ling said. Beneath her seemingly serious expression was a feeling of helplessness.
She had assisted the Special Affairs Department many times and had seen many strange things, but this was the first time she had to persuade female ghosts to turn over a new leaf by invoking concepts of karma and reincarnation. She was, after all, a person who had been steeped in Marxist-Leninist thought. To make her say such things was truly too…
“No, I want revenge! If there is a cause and effect to everything, why shouldn’t the bad guys be punished? Why should the victims have to suffer in silence!” one of the long-haired female ghosts shouted, the black qi around her beginning to condense.
“This isn’t suffering in silence; this is making peace with yourselves,” Shen Ling said, opening her badge. “Trust me, I will do my utmost to bring those who harmed you to justice.”
“Really?” Seeing Shen Ling’s badge, the two female ghosts became hesitant again. The image of the People’s Police was still very righteous in their hearts.
“Captain Shen will certainly try her best to bring the criminals to justice, but she can’t guarantee the final outcome.” Seeing the resentment around the two female ghosts lessen, Lu Zhiming, who was serving as the background, spoke up.
“As long as you make peace with yourselves, you can break free from the school’s restrictions on you,” Lu Zhiming said, ignoring Shen Ling’s look of disapproval. “Although you only have three days, I think you can still do something.”
“For example, you could go to your enemies to scare them a little, or find evidence of their crimes and give it to Captain Shen,” Lu Zhiming said. “That way, when you reincarnate, you can leave with more peace of mind.”
“Really?” Both female ghosts were excited.
“Of course,” Lu Zhiming nodded. Feeling someone tugging at her sleeve, she turned to look at Shen Ling.
Shen Ling’s face clearly expressed her disapproval. “It’s best not to do anything illegal. Furthermore, evidence you steal might not be admissible in court. The law will punish the culprits on your behalf.”
Before Lu Zhiming could say anything, the two female ghosts instantly hugged each other and huddled in a corner, too frightened to move, as if they had met a terrifying creature.
“Haven’t you sorted things out yet?” Wen Yunqing strolled over. Seeing Shen Ling, her eyebrows subtly adjusted. “Have we met somewhere before?”
“The police station, regarding the human trafficker,” Shen Ling instantly recognized Wen Yunqing.
“Oh, Officer Shen, it was you.” Wen Yunqing also remembered. She walked over to Lu Zhiming and said, “I’ve dealt with the vicious ghost. Here’s your bell back.”
“Good, thank you for your hard work.” Lu Zhiming took the bell and naturally put it in her pocket. “We have a little bit of trouble here. Captain Shen thinks letting these two ghosts solve their own problems isn’t appropriate.”
“Officer Shen, what’s inappropriate about it? Are you worried something might happen to them on the way?” Wen Yunqing asked, offering enthusiastically, “If that’s the case, I can give them two talismans to temporarily boost their power.”
“…” Shen Ling had a headache. Lu Zhiming was enough to worry about, and now here was another one causing trouble.
“Lu Zhiming, if I remember correctly, when you asked for my help, you asked me to persuade these two ghosts not to cause trouble and to turn over a new leaf, right?” Shen Ling sighed. “Are you not indirectly encouraging them to do bad things by telling them to seek ‘revenge’ now?”
“Does this count as doing bad things?” Lu Zhiming asked seriously. “Punishing bad people should represent justice, right?”
“I agree it represents justice,” Wen Yunqing nodded in support.
Two against one, Shen Ling could only sigh helplessly and pinch the bridge of her nose. “I’m stating this upfront: startling them is fine, and stealing evidence is fine, but you cannot cause a death. Otherwise, I can’t clean up this mess.”
“Understood, Captain Shen. Don’t worry, I know my limits,” Lu Zhiming promised.
Shen Ling didn’t know what more to say. Lu Zhiming had lost all credibility in her eyes. This kind of assurance was practically equivalent to setting up a jinx.
“I was never here today. If anything goes wrong, you handle it yourself.” Shen Ling gave the two shivering female ghosts one last look, felt her headache worsen, immediately removed the talisman from her back, and left without looking back.
Wen Yunqing didn’t delay either. She asked Lu Zhiming for the paper talismans, infused them with her spiritual energy, tossed them directly onto the two minor ghosts, and immediately made her escape.
At two in the morning, Wen Yunqing relied on the fingerprint scanner to get back into her house.
She struggled for less than a second between going directly back to her room and checking on Wen Yimeng before heading straight for Wen Yimeng’s room.
Wrapping spiritual energy around the doorknob, Wen Yunqing opened the bedroom door without making the slightest sound and tiptoed inside.
“Wen Yunqing!” Wen Yimeng suddenly called out.
Wen Yunqing, who had just reached the bedside, froze and immediately held her breath, looking down.
Hmm? Isn’t my Darling Yimeng sleeping with her eyes closed?
“Idiot…” Wen Yimeng murmured softly, then fell silent again.
Phew—So she was dreaming! It seemed Darling Yimeng’s dream included her. This proves she is still very important in Yimeng’s heart!
Wen Yunqing, who conveniently ignored the word “idiot,” then took advantage of the sleeping person to set up several simple defensive measures in her room.
It was one thing when she didn’t know about ghosts and monsters in this world, but now that she did, she had to take precautions.
The next day, Wen Yimeng came downstairs for breakfast on time. Seeing Wen Yunqing sitting next to her, she habitually greeted her.
“Good morning.”
“Good morning~” Wen Yunqing smiled at Wen Yimeng, then popped a piece of fried egg into her mouth.
Wait a minute, something isn’t quite right? Wen Yimeng turned to look at Wen Yunqing. “Didn’t you say you were staying at school last night to take care of something?”
“Yes, but I thought about it, and I prefer being with you, so I came back,” Wen Yunqing said with a smile.
Wen Yimeng snorted softly. Do I look like an idiot? Why would I believe such a flimsy excuse!
Wen Yunqing didn’t mind and continued to eat her food, finishing the two fried eggs (representing a perfect score) and the sausage.
“The teachers grading the papers this time aren’t from our school. Write your composition seriously and don’t write anything weird,” Wen Yimeng instructed Wen Yunqing before they entered the exam hall. “Also, for modern prose, you need to use the methods Zhou Jun taught you to think, not your own random interpretations.”
“Okay, I remember all of it. I’ll do my best,” Wen Yunqing nodded seriously. “I’ll be in the same exam room as you for the next test.”
Wen Yimeng didn’t pour cold water on her ambition this time. “Good. I’ll be waiting for you in the first exam room.”
The final exam schedule was the same as the midterms: Chinese, Math, Science Comprehensive, and Foreign Language, spread over two days.
Perhaps due to those two bolts of lightning from Wen Yunqing, nothing happened at Ruihua during the two days of the exam.
As soon as the exams were over, news quickly began to circulate.
“Do you know? Something happened to a board member at our school. I heard he encountered an evil spirit when he got up to use the restroom at night. I don’t know how, but he chopped off his own…” The student couldn’t help but rub his arm. “Not only did he chop his third leg into pieces, but he also flushed it down the toilet. If his nanny hadn’t found him quickly, he might have bled to death.”
“How could such a thing happen?” Wen Yimeng wrinkled her nose. Even imagining such a scene was polluting her mind.
“Are you talking about that board member? I heard from my cousin that he’s not a good person. He always liked to pick out good-looking students from the poor students’ list and constantly summoned them for private talks.”
“Ugh, disgusting. What’s wrong with the Ruihua board? How could they let such trash in?”
“Alas, he’s rich. He donated an entire building.”
“When did that person have his accident?” Wen Yimeng asked.
The student who was asked thought for a moment. “It was the night before our exams. He’s still lying in the hospital now.”
Wasn’t that the night before last? The same night Wen Yunqing said she had something to stay at school to deal with?
