I Got Together With the Fake Heiress - Chapter 18
Upon returning, they certainly couldn’t avoid a lecture, and Wen Yunqing used the same excuse as she did at the police station, taking all the blame onto herself. Wen Yimeng remained silent, but the look she gave Wen Yunqing had changed noticeably.
“Why did you take all the responsibility?” Once they reached the third floor, Wen Yimeng couldn’t help but ask.
Wen Yunqing paused; she wasn’t very keen on deceiving Wen Yimeng. “Actually, it can’t exactly be called taking all the blame. I truly felt something was off at the time, which is why I deliberately went around the corner before getting into the car.”
Wen Yimeng was somewhat surprised. “Did you discover something?”
“Just some feelings,” Wen Yunqing said, extending her hand and pulling Wen Yimeng into her embrace. “I’ll tell you secretly; don’t tell anyone else.”
“What is it?” Wen Yimeng subconsciously tensed up, ignoring Wen Yunqing’s action.
“Actually, I was completely sober after getting into the car,” Wen Yunqing said mysteriously. “When the car stopped, I immediately took out their boss, and I even hypnotized the rest of them to call the police and surrender.”
“Really?” Wen Yimeng asked, half-believing, half-doubting. Was Wen Yunqing really that amazing? How did she manage to do that? Just say she ‘took out’ the person, and she did?
“Fake. I just wanted to take the chance to get close to you,” Wen Yunqing instantly changed her tone. While Wen Yimeng was still in her arms, she couldn’t resist kissing her earlobe.
Wen Yimeng’s expression changed, and she immediately pushed Wen Yunqing away. “Pervert!”
“I just touched your ear; does that count as being a pervert?” Wen Yunqing looked at her innocently. “I didn’t grab your waist and pin you against the wall to kiss you.”
“…” Wen Yimeng felt her breathing become labored. Which part of her brain had gone wrong? How could she have actually sincerely believed what she just said?
“Alright, it’s getting late; time for bed,” Wen Yunqing said cheerfully. “If my darling Yimeng is too scared to sleep alone tonight, I can make a sacrifice and sleep with you.”
Wen Yimeng took a deep breath, slowly exhaled, and then bit out one word through clenched teeth.
“Get lost!”
Because of Wen Yunqing’s “bizarre” statement, Wen Yimeng didn’t overthink things that night. After showering, she lay in bed and fell asleep quickly.
After the sports meet, the midterm exams arrived as Wen Yunqing had anticipated. Due to being a transfer student, Wen Yunqing’s seat was arranged in the last spot of the final examination room, sitting with the twenty-nine students who had the lowest scores.
“Zhang Yao?” As soon as she walked through the door, Wen Yunqing spotted an acquaintance in the very first seat and casually greeted him. “Long time no see.”
Although Wen Yunqing’s skin had turned fairer and her hair had grown out a bit, Zhang Yao recognized her immediately. A somewhat guilty smile appeared at the corner of his mouth. “It’s Classmate Wen, long time no see.”
Wen Yunqing glanced at Zhang Yao one more time, then went to her seat to wait for the exam.
The first subject was Chinese Language and Literature. As someone who had read many ancient texts, Wen Yunqing’s literary foundation was quite good. Apart from the modern reading comprehension questions that felt a bit strange to her, her answering process was very smooth. After writing a flowing, 800-character essay, Wen Yunqing raised her hand to signal, handing in her paper early and leaving.
“Teacher, I’m submitting my paper too,” Zhang Yao raised his hand immediately after seeing Wen Yunqing leave.
The proctor walked over and frowned reflexively upon seeing Zhang Yao’s paper. “Classmate, your essay is not finished. Are you sure you want to submit?”
“I said I’m submitting, so what’s with all the nonsense!” Zhang Yao said impatiently, shoving the paper into the teacher’s hand, grabbing two pens, and immediately getting up to leave. The proctor could only manage a strained smile and let the students in the classroom continue answering.
Wen Yunqing had finished an hour early. At this time, there weren’t many people in the school. After walking toward the supermarket for a distance, she noticed someone following her, and it wasn’t just one or two people. Since she had time to spare, Wen Yunqing took a deliberate turn, walking toward a more secluded area.
“The opportunity is here. You guys go up in a moment,” Zhang Yao said in a low voice. “After it’s done, two thousand yuan per person. If any of you get caught, don’t implicate me, understand?”
“We take money to do jobs; we understand the rules,” the leader was a burly man with a tattoo on his neck, his expression ferocious. Zhang Yao nodded, thinking that since he had called eight people this time, he couldn’t help but add one more thing: “Don’t hit too hard, don’t cause any fatalities.” He had investigated; this Wen Yunqing had been very close to Wen Yimeng recently, so she probably held some weight in the Wen family. If Wen Yunqing were seriously injured, he might get implicated too.
The Tattooed Man nodded. Seeing Wen Yunqing about to reach the end of the path, he immediately signaled his seven brothers, and they surrounded her.
“What do you people want?” Wen Yunqing turned around, her eyes scrutinizing them.
“We take money to do jobs. If you cooperate, we won’t do anything to you,” the Tattooed Man said, and the eight men directly surrounded Wen Yunqing.
Wen Yunqing sighed. She hadn’t done anything, so why was so much trouble coming her way? “How much did the other party offer? I’ll give you double.”
Hearing Wen Yunqing’s offer, the Tattooed Man’s expression shifted slightly. He exchanged a look with his subordinate.
“Five times. Tell me who your employer is.” Seeing the hesitation in their eyes, Wen Yunqing raised the stakes at once. The current situation was different from last time; she wanted to maintain the image of a good student at school.
“We have professional ethics; we cannot reveal information about the employer,” the Tattooed Man said, his expression fluctuating significantly. After hesitating for a moment, he continued, “The other party offered us two thousand each. There are eight of us.”
“I will give you one hundred thousand. You don’t have to tell me who the employer is; just beat the other party up instead,” Wen Yunqing stated. “I trust your professional ethics; I can give you fifty thousand upfront.”
“Deal. No need for upfront payment; we always take the money after the job is done!” the Tattooed Man agreed readily. People in their line of work only cared about money; this offer was already many times higher than what the original employer offered, so of course, they were tempted!
Zhang Yao, cautious not to expose himself, could only hide far away and watch. Seeing the Tattooed Man and his group only surrounding Wen Yunqing without making a move, he couldn’t help but get anxious. What were these guys doing? Didn’t they agree on the price? Why weren’t they starting? Did they feel reluctant to hit a woman?
Before Zhang Yao could figure it out, he saw the Tattooed Man returning with his men, looking at him with ill intentions.
“What are you doing? Why didn’t you attack? Why are you coming back!” Zhang Yao panicked. What were these guys doing? “Do you still want the money!”
“Sorry, we are canceling your job,” the Tattooed Man said, then stepped forward and landed a punch directly on Zhang Yao’s face.
Zhang Yao had no idea that their target had switched to him, so he took the punch without any defense. “Damn it, what’s wrong with you guys? I hired you to beat someone else, not me!”
“We’re beating you!” The Tattooed Man signaled his companions. The eight men surrounded Zhang Yao, and each one landed a few hits on him. Soon, Zhang Yao was lying on the ground, crying out in pain. Of course, the strikes were not too heavy; they knew that students at this school all had backgrounds, so they were merely teaching him a lesson, after which they took several pictures of him clicking their fingers (kāchā kāchā sound effect) before leaving.
“Isn’t this Classmate Zhang Yao?” After the group left, Wen Yunqing strolled casually up to Zhang Yao. “Why is your lip bleeding? Did you fall down?”
Seeing Wen Yunqing appear, Zhang Yao had basically guessed the truth—Wen Yunqing must have said something to those men, causing them to turn on him.
“Yes, I slipped just now, so I fell,” Zhang Yao’s smile was very forced. He dared not confront Wen Yunqing directly and could only swallow this hidden loss.
“I just lost a little money. Do you think I should go find the culprit to settle the score?” Wen Yunqing showed Zhang Yao a “friendly” smile. “Or perhaps the friendly and united Classmate Zhang Yao is willing to give me some money to comfort me?”
“…” What could Zhang Yao say? He could only tearfully hand over one hundred thousand yuan, indirectly paying to be beaten up by himself.
“Zhang Yao, three strikes and you’re out,” after receiving the money via WeChat transfer, Wen Yunqing looked at Zhang Yao and said with a cold smile. “Next time, you won’t just lose money. I hope you keep this sentence firmly in mind.” Although Wen Yunqing said this with a smile, the moment Zhang Yao met her gaze, his heart jumped fiercely. If it wasn’t money, did she want his life? Thinking this, Zhang Yao immediately nodded like a chick pecking grain. “No more, no more, there definitely won’t be a third time!”
Wen Yunqing didn’t say anything more. She gave him a meaningful look before leaving. She had important matters to attend to; soon, her darling Yimeng would finish her exams, and she needed to secure a good spot in the cafeteria to order food in advance.
The exam spanned two days. Having been intensely tutored, Wen Yunqing didn’t find it difficult. Every time she finished an answer sheet, she confidently submitted it, absolutely refusing to look at it again. As for Zhang Yao, having been taught a lesson once, he became extremely obedient, staying until the end of every exam. Upon seeing Wen Yunqing, he automatically moved three meters away, striving to minimize his presence in front of her.
“Yunqing, how did you feel about this exam? Did you find anything particularly difficult?” As soon as the exam ended, Zhou Jun brought out her little notebook to inquire about Wen Yunqing’s experience.
“Everything was fine. I don’t think it was very hard,” Wen Yunqing replied confidently.
“Really?” Wen Yimeng didn’t quite believe it. Since the sports meet, Wen Yunqing had always had a thousand reasons to avoid tutoring. Could she still score well under those circumstances?
“Naturally. I actually have a talent for studying too,” Wen Yunqing said with a smile. Since she recovered her spiritual power, she could achieve photographic memory. Under this premise, how could she possibly not get good grades!
When the results were posted, Wen Yunqing was very confident in her scores; she firmly believed she could definitely place in the top fifty of her grade. This kind of confidence lasted until the day the results were announced.
“How is this possible! I’m actually fifty-first?!” Looking at the report card in her hand, the expression on Wen Yunqing’s face contorted; this was impossible!
“Fifty-first?” Wen Yimeng heard this and was the first to lean in, saying with some surprise, “You actually managed to get fifty-first? It seems Zhou Jun’s tutoring was quite effective.”
Wen Yunqing looked utterly dejected. “But we agreed beforehand that if I could score in the top fifty, I wouldn’t have to follow that study plan.”
Zhou Jun rushed over upon hearing this. She hadn’t paid attention to Wen Yunqing’s rank but instead looked at her scores for each subject.
“Yunqing, why is your Chinese Language score only 110 points?” Zhou Jun frowned slightly. In her impression, Chinese Language should be Wen Yunqing’s strong suit; she should be capable of scoring 130 points.
“Ah, this. I’m not very clear on that either,” Wen Yunqing said while stuffing the recently distributed exam papers into her drawer.
“Yunqing, would you mind letting me see your paper? I need to see where your weak points are,” Zhou Jun said seriously. Based on the current situation, as long as Wen Yunqing stabilized her Chinese Language score at 130 points, getting into Peking University would be certain.
“I looked at the paper already. My modern literature and essay didn’t turn out well, which is why I lost points,” Wen Yunqing said casually. “Zhou Jun, why don’t you teach me modern literature for a while every day from now on?”
“Modern literature reading comprehension?” Zhou Jun thought for a moment and replied, “Generally, as long as you memorize the answer templates, you can just plug them in. If you need tutoring, then do two more practice essays every day.”
Wen Yimeng watched Wen Yunqing thoughtfully and tentatively asked, “Wen Yunqing, you didn’t score zero points on the modern literature section, did you?”
“Nonsense, I got two points,” Wen Yunqing retorted instinctively.
“Two points?” Zhou Jun frowned. “Yunqing, let me see your paper. How could you only get two points?”
“…” Wen Yunqing desperately wished she could use an illegal forbidden technique to rewind time by one minute. “There’s no need for that. I just had a small deviation in my understanding.”
“What emotion did the author express in the article?” Wen Yimeng, seeming to guess something, asked while trying to suppress a laugh.
“Naturally, it’s the author’s feeling of missing his hometown,” as soon as Wen Yunqing finished speaking, Wen Yimeng couldn’t help but chuckle aloud.
“Cough, cough, I just thought of a joke,” Wen Yimeng rearranged her expression. “I’ll ask you: what did the author’s dream in the last paragraph imply?”
Wen Yunqing’s brow furrowed slightly. If the person asking wasn’t Wen Yimeng, she would have already flipped out. “It implies that the apocalypse is coming, which is why there’s a strange light in that person’s eyes.”
“Hahaha, Wen Yunqing, have you been reading too many novels lately?” Hearing that answer, Wen Yimeng genuinely couldn’t hold back. “The author of that piece was anti-war; he was always using irony and science fiction to express the theme. How could you take it literally? Where is this apocalypse coming from!”
Seeing the smile on Wen Yimeng’s face, Wen Yunqing no longer felt sad. If Wen Yimeng could always smile so happily, then her embarrassing herself once wasn’t a big deal.
“I finished the test quickly at the time, so I didn’t think too much about it.” In reality, Wen Yunqing had been overconfident in herself and answered based on her first impression.
“Classmate Wen Yunqing, may I see your essay?” Wen Yimeng would bet that Wen Yunqing’s essay was a complete joke; otherwise, she wouldn’t have scored this low.
“Really?” Wen Yunqing asked, a trace of eagerness appearing in her eyes. “If you want to see it, it’s not impossible, but only you can look.”
“Okay,” Wen Yimeng didn’t think much of it, secretly preparing her phone, planning to secretly take a picture. If Wen Yunqing angered her in the future, she could use this photo to tease her.
The essay topic this time was very conventional: a short piece of material was provided, and candidates were asked to debate whether innate talent or hard work was more important. Wen Yimeng first looked at the essay score and saw the thirty-eight points, and she knew instantly: Wen Yunqing’s essay was 100% off-topic.
With the intention of watching a spectacle, Wen Yimeng looked at the first paragraph of the essay, and then she was stunned. What was going on? Why couldn’t she understand it?
“Wen Yunqing, how did you write this essay?” A question mark couldn’t help but appear above Wen Yimeng’s head. “Who writes like this, using Classical Chinese?”
“Didn’t they say the writing style was unlimited, excluding poetry?” Wen Yunqing looked innocent. “I just used the writing style of the ancients.”
“…” This reason was quite sufficient. But this still wasn’t right; if it were Classical Chinese, the score should have been higher, not thirty-eight points. Wen Yimeng’s understanding of Classical Chinese was limited. After skimming through the majority of it, she grasped that it was an essay arguing for the importance of hard work.
Rubbing her eyes, just as Wen Yimeng was about to return the paper, she coincidentally saw the final sentence.
“Thus, strive hard, and you shall gain Yimeng! ~” Wen Yimeng read it out subconsciously, and the expression on her face became extremely vivid. Taking a deep breath and slowly exhaling, Wen Yimeng suppressed the urge to smear the paper on Wen Yunqing’s face and asked through gritted teeth, “Wen Yunqing, what exactly did you write in this essay!”
“You just read out my core idea,” Wen Yunqing smiled, saying with ease. “I didn’t rely on my talent to make you like me, so I could only rely on my hard work to make you like me.”
“…” Wen Yimeng felt her hands were too slow; she should have covered Wen Yunqing’s mouth earlier.
Hearing their conversation, Zhou Jun silently retreated a few steps. Although she didn’t know what secret dealings were going on between the two, it was definitely right to stay further away.
“How could you write something like this in an essay?” Wen Yimeng truly asked through gritted teeth. “It’s one thing for you to fool around normally, but how could you…”
“Yimeng, did you understand this essay?” Wen Yunqing asked. “Was what I said wrong? I was only expressing the affection of an older cousin for her younger cousin.”
Wen Yimeng froze. “It’s about affection for a younger cousin?”
“Yes, didn’t you see that?” Wen Yunqing looked at her with a sly smile. “This essay—I approached it from the angle of familial affection.”
Wen Yimeng glanced at the densely written essay. She could only understand about half of it; there were many rare words and phrases that she couldn’t read well.
“However, I did go off-topic this time. My focus was on familial love, so I lacked sufficient discussion on talent and effort,” Wen Yunqing said candidly. “Getting thirty-eight points is probably because the grader really appreciated my writing style.”
Wen Yimeng stared at Wen Yunqing with a dark expression. She had reasonable grounds to suspect that Wen Yunqing intentionally wrote such an essay just for this moment, to make her so embarrassed that she wanted to dig three rooms and one hall with her toes.
“Yimeng, although I wrote about sisterly affection, my feelings for you are the kind you were thinking of just now. I am very serious, not just playing around,” Wen Yunqing said this with a clear conscience. She admitted that when they first met, she only claimed to like Wen Yimeng because of her looks; that initial affection was more about possession and attainment. But now it was different; she had genuinely invested her feelings. Her current affection for Wen Yimeng was the kind that wanted to be with her.
The expression on Wen Yimeng’s face changed slightly, but in the end, she solidified her original thought: even if everything Wen Yunqing did for her before wasn’t a pretense, they still couldn’t be together. At most, they could become slightly better friends. She didn’t have romantic love for Wen Yunqing yet; at best, it was just a favorable impression.
Seeing Wen Yimeng remain silent, Wen Yunqing knew she had failed again. But it didn’t matter. As someone with extensive “theoretical” experience, Wen Yunqing was still very confident. If those playboys could achieve a successful “chase-wife-to-the-crematorium” scenario, how could she, who was so excellent, fail to win over her beloved?
Although Wen Yunqing only ranked fifty-first, Zhou Jun still put away her study plan, allowing Wen Yunqing to arrange her own tutoring content. Wen Yunqing herself was not a studious person; if she could, she wouldn’t want to tutor for even one minute. However, considering Zhou Jun’s family situation and Wen Yimeng’s enthusiasm for studying, she reluctantly set the tutoring time to an hour and a half per day.
“Not bad, you didn’t disgrace me,” Father Wen said, holding both of their report cards—one fifty-first, one tenth.
“Dad, Yimeng’s and my scores are so good, do you have any way to show your appreciation?” Wen Yunqing asked. “How about increasing our allowance?”
Looking at Wen Yunqing, who now resembled him by five points, Father Wen’s face broke into a smile. “Good. I’ll add one hundred thousand to each of your allowances this month!”
“Thank you, Dad,” Wen Yimeng said sweetly, while a flicker of disappointment crossed her eyes. It was fitting that having blood ties meant asking for money came so naturally.
“I performed so well this time thanks to Yimeng helping me study; you can give my share to Yimeng,” Wen Yunqing said with a smile.
“One thing is one thing, and the other is another. You deserve a reward for your good score. As for Yimeng’s reward, that’s a separate matter,” Father Wen said. He was very happy to see the sisters getting along harmoniously. “Yimeng, is there anything you want lately?”
Wen Yimeng shook her head and replied obediently, “The allowance Dad gives me is a lot; I’ve already bought anything I wanted.”
Father Wen tapped the table with his finger. “Then we’ll save that request for later. If you want something in the future, just tell me.”
“Mmm-hmm, thank you, Dad,” Wen Yimeng said, a brilliant smile appearing on her face. Wen Yunqing leaned back in her chair, wondering why she felt that Wen Yimeng’s smile now seemed somewhat forced, not as genuinely happy as when she was teasing her in the classroom earlier. Why was that? Did darling Yimeng not like being in this home as much as she thought?
If Wen Yunqing and Wen Yimeng’s scores were considered good, then Zhou Jun, who successfully scored first in the grade, was truly outstanding. The day after the results were announced, the head teacher, Lou Youpeng, specifically praised Zhou Jun before explaining the papers, telling her to maintain this score and encouraging the classmates to learn from her.
Just as Lou Youpeng finished praising her, a teacher from the Academic Affairs Office entered the classroom with a serious expression and knocked stiffly on the door.
“Is Classmate Zhou Jun here? Please step out for a moment,” the Academic Affairs teacher said with a stern face.
“I am Zhou Jun. Teacher, what can I help you with?” Zhou Jun stood up and asked curiously.
The teacher from the Academic Affairs Office scrutinized Zhou Jun up and down and said, “Someone has reported you for cheating. Please come with us to the Academic Affairs Office.”
“Cheating?” Upon hearing those words, Class One immediately erupted into an uproar.
“Teacher, you must be mistaken. Zhou Jun is consistently in the top three; why would she cheat?” The Sports Committee Member was the first to stand up to defend Zhou Jun.
“Exactly, exactly, you must have made a mistake,” because of the sports meet, the boys in the class began defending Zhou Jun.
The teacher from the Academic Affairs Office frowned, looking at this group of students who were mostly wealthy and influential, and suppressed his temper. “Students, we received a report. According to procedure, we need Zhou Jun’s cooperation for the investigation. As for whether this matter is true, we will post a relevant announcement after the investigation is complete.”
“The innocent will be proven innocent. I am willing to cooperate with the investigation,” since the teacher from the Academic Affairs Office had offered an explanation, Zhou Jun also stated her position. After all, every one of her points was earned through her own ability; cooperating with an investigation was not an issue.
