I Got A Girlfriend After Losing My Memory (Transmigration) - Chapter 23
Maybe being constantly managed had made her a little unhappy, but deep down, she still wanted to be with Tao Ran.
Seeing Tang Fuzhi about to leave, Xu Rujia quickly suggested, “Since you’re meeting President Tao, why not pack a lunch? You can eat together when you get to the office.”
Tang Fuzhi paused, realizing Xu Rujia had a point.
When ordering, she instinctively wanted to choose dishes Tao Ran liked.
But as her eyes scanned the menu, Tang Fuzhi realized something unsettling: Tao Ran knew her preferences inside and out, yet she knew nothing about Tao Ran’s.
Tang Fuzhi felt a pang of helplessness.
After a moment’s hesitation, she randomly selected a few dishes Tao Ran often made herself.
The restaurant was quick to serve. Xu Rujia packed the takeout boxes into the car, ready to drive straight to Tao Ran’s office. But Tang Fuzhi suddenly spoke up.
“I want to go home first.”
Xu Rujia turned back, surprised.
Just moments ago, Tang Fuzhi had seemed so eager to see Tao Ran. Why the sudden change of heart?
Tang Fuzhi pressed her lips together, turning away to avoid explaining.
Fortunately, Xu Rujia had the good sense not to press the issue. She simply started the car and drove home.
Worried the food would spoil if left out too long, Tang Fuzhi hurried home to change her clothes.
The outfit Tao Ran had prepared for her that morning.
Back in the car, she immediately noticed Xu Rujia’s curious, slightly suggestive gaze.
Tang Fuzhi pressed her lips together, feeling a little embarrassed, and adopted a stern tone. “Don’t look!”
It’s not like I wanted to match Tao Ran’s outfit or anything.
It’s just… it’s better to dress formally for the office.
Yeah, that’s all it is.
Tang Fuzhi mentally reassured herself, repeating the explanation to convince herself.
Arriving at the Tao Group headquarters, Tang Fuzhi gazed up at the towering skyscraper, its peak disappearing into the clouds.
For the first time, she truly grasped the scale of Tao Ran’s background.
“This is Tao Ran’s company?” she asked, barely believing it.
Xu Rujia nodded.
Tang Fuzhi took a deep breath.
She had always suspected Tao Ran was wealthy, but she couldn’t reconcile such a massive corporation with her small apartment.
Sighing, she entered the building. The receptionist immediately bowed with a smile. “Good day, Miss Tang.”
Tang Fuzhi startled, tentatively replying, “H hello.”
She was about to ask which floor Tao Ran’s office was on when the receptionist warmly greeted her and led her toward the elevator. “President Tao will be thrilled to know you’re here.”
The receptionist pressed the elevator button and waved goodbye with a smile.
Xu Rujia marveled at the impeccable service. “No wonder it’s the Tao Group.”
Tang Fuzhi watched the elevator numbers change, and with a ding, the doors opened.
Tao Ran’s secretary, He Ruo, visibly surprised to see Tang Fuzhi, quickly composed herself with a professional smile. “Miss Tang, what brings you here? President Tao is still in a meeting. Would you like to wait in her office?”
Tang Fuzhi nodded, took the takeout bag from Xu Rujia, and entered Tao Ran’s office.
It was her first time here.
The office, like Tao Ran herself, was decorated in a minimalist black-and-white palette. A massive bookshelf lined the left wall, just like the one in her home study.
The desk was cluttered with miscellaneous documents, but the most surprising thing was a jar of candy.
The vibrant colors clashed sharply with the office’s austere decor, making it hard not to wonder about their presence.
Tang Fuzhi crouched down to examine the candies more closely. She realized they weren’t a mix of flavors, but only lemon, apple, and orange.
Exactly her favorites.
This realization softened Tang Fuzhi’s heart. Her lips curved into a smile, and her amber eyes sparkled with delight.
She casually set down her takeout box, picked out a lemon candy, and let its tangy-sweet flavor burst in her mouth.
Just as she liked it.
Tang Fuzhi turned around. Across from the bookshelf was a massive floor-to-ceiling window offering a panoramic view of the city below.
It gave her a sense of standing atop the world.
Stepping further into the room, Tang Fuzhi discovered a small adjoining chamber.
The layout of the small room mirrored Tao Ran’s bedroom at home.
The wardrobe held a selection of formal attire for quick changes, including even a few sets of undergarments.
Tang Fuzhi examined the contents more closely and discovered several brightly colored outfits. After careful comparison, she realized they seemed to be her size.
Office
Small room
The two women’s changes of clothes
Even underwear
All these items placed together made it hard not to jump to conclusions.
Tang Fuzhi’s cheeks flushed crimson as she silently gnawed on her fingernails, lost in thought.
Could it be that before I lost my memory, I used to play office games with Tao Ran?
That’s way too inappropriate for children!
Though we’re not children anymore.
Tao Ran had just finished a meeting, having dealt with those old geezers. A dull throbbing pulsed behind her eyes, accompanied by a sharp ringing in her ears.
She’d only taken over the company less than a month ago. Though her grandfather had helped, some of the old guard still coveted her position, constantly scheming to oust her.
Back in her office, she spotted a takeout box on her desk, assuming He Ruo had ordered lunch for her.
She wasn’t in the mood to eat, but tossing it would be wasteful. She decided to take the box to He Ruo as a treat.
He Ruo’s workstation was right outside Tao Ran’s office.
For some reason, He Ruo wasn’t at her desk.
Tao Ran didn’t think much of it. She left the takeout box on He Ruo’s desk, sent her a text, and returned to her office.
Closing the door, she instinctively opened a drawer to grab her medicine, but then remembered Tang Fuzhi’s warning to take it sparingly, fearing she’d become dependent.
Tao Ran glanced at the candies on her left, casually unwrapped one, and popped it into her mouth. She couldn’t quite taste the flavor.
Her mind kept replaying fragments of her time with Tang Fuzhi, especially the words Tang Fuzhi had spoken before losing her memory:
“If you ever feel restless or have a headache and want medicine, just eat a candy. Imagine I’m right beside you, and the pain will go away.”
The girl’s soft voice seemed to echo in her ear.
“Of course, if it’s really unbearable, you can have one or two occasionally. But try to limit them. Doctor Zheng said these pills can become addictive if you take too many.”
Tao Ran opened her eyes, glanced at the medicine in the drawer, and decisively tossed it into the trash.
Now that Tang Fuzhi was awake, she no longer needed these things. Tang Fuzhi herself was her best medicine.
Tao Ran smiled silently, remembering how Tang Fuzhi had offered her the candies.
She rubbed her thumb against her fingertip.
I miss Tang Tang already.
It had only been four hours since they’d parted.
Tao Ran pulled out her phone and dialed Tang Fuzhi’s number, but the familiar ringtone came from the room next door.
She opened the door and, as expected, found the girl with slightly flushed cheeks, looking flustered at the sudden ringing of her phone.
Almost instinctively, the moment Tao Ran saw Tang Fuzhi, the world seemed to fall silent, and the dull throbbing in her head vanished.
“What are you doing here?”
As she spoke, Tao Ran noticed Tang Fuzhi was wearing the outfit she had prepared for her that morning.
Perhaps due to the lingering headache, Tao Ran’s tone wasn’t as gentle as usual, sounding slightly cold.
Tang Fuzhi, misinterpreting her coldness as unwelcome, pouted in mild displeasure. “What, you don’t want me here?”
Realizing her words had come across too coldly, Tao Ran’s face softened into a smile, her voice regaining its familiar warmth.
“I’m so happy you’re here.”
Tao Ran reached out and pulled Tang Fuzhi into a hug, closing her eyes to savor her warmth, her soft breathing, and the faint scent of white tea.
She really is my best medicine, Tao Ran thought.
Tang Fuzhi, sensing Tao Ran’s uncharacteristic tenderness, felt her ears grow warm. Her instinctive push was met with an even tighter embrace.
After what felt like an eternity, Tang Fuzhi’s legs began to ache from standing, and her stomach rumbled loudly. She murmured softly, “Are you feeling better yet?”
Standing so close to Tang Fuzhi, Tao Ran naturally heard her stomach growl and chuckled softly.
Tang Fuzhi’s face flushed even deeper. She reached out to cover Tao Ran’s mouth, “Stop laughing!”
She pressed her hands over Tao Ran’s ears, trying to hide her embarrassment like an ostrich burying its head in the sand.
Tao Ran smiled, caught Tang Fuzhi’s hand, and brought it to her lips, pressing a kiss against her palm. Her voice dropped to a low murmur, “Why haven’t you eaten yet?”
Remembering what she had said to Xu Rujia at the restaurant, Tang Fuzhi’s ears burned. She yanked her hand away.
I’m not telling her the truth.
It’ll make it sound like I missed her.
“I packed you some lunch. I wasn’t sure what you’d want, so I picked a few dishes you usually make.”
The smile on Tao Ran’s face faltered. She recalled the takeout box on her desk earlier and felt a sudden sense of foreboding.
Sure enough, when Tang Fuzhi stepped out of the office, she noticed the lunchbox was gone. She turned back in surprise, “Where’s the lunch I brought you?”
Just as I thought.
Tao Ran quickly shifted the blame, “He Ruo probably didn’t notice it and thought someone had left their things in my office.”
Tang Fuzhi frowned slightly, sensing something was off. “But He Ruo clearly saw me when I came in.”
When she came in with the takeout box, He Ruo had greeted her at the door. How could she not have noticed?
Before Tang Fuzhi could dwell on it, Tao Ran was already at the office door, anxious to keep Tang Fuzhi from following. “I’ll go ask. Wait here.”
The moment she stepped out, Tao Ran hurried to He Ruo’s desk. Seeing the takeout box on the desk, she felt a wave of relief.
Thank goodness.
Upon closer inspection, the packaging was indeed different from He Ruo’s usual orders. It wasn’t from her regular place. Tao Ran had simply been too preoccupied with her bad mood to notice earlier.
Just then, her phone buzzed with a notification. It was a reply to the text she’d sent He Ruo earlier.
He Ruo: President Tao, that’s from Miss Tang for you. Didn’t you see her in the office?
Tao Ran replied with a curt “Never mind” and carried the takeout box back into her office.
She found Tang Fuzhi sitting in her chair, another box on the desk, and the medicine she’d just thrown in the trash.
Tao Ran’s heart sank.
