I Got A Girlfriend After Losing My Memory (Transmigration) - Chapter 18
Before Tao Ran could get angry, Tang Fuzhi resorted to her usual tactic: flattery.
She had long discovered that Tao Ran was utterly defenseless against her flattery. If she just acted sweet and charming, Tao Ran would move heaven and earth to get her whatever she wanted, even the stars themselves.
She had thoroughly tested this strategy during their time together.
Tang Fuzhi blinked her bright, watery eyes at Tao Ran, her voice soft and sweet as she moved her hand from Tao Ran’s cheek to her palm, surrendering the initiative. “Okay, let’s go ride the carousel now.”
The young woman’s radiant smile was infectious, her amber eyes sparkling with light, utterly captivating.
With Tang Fuzhi’s hand resting in her palm, their skin touching, Tao Ran could feel her warmth.
Most importantly, Tang Fuzhi’s dependence, trust, and flattery were undeniable. Tao Ran simply couldn’t resist this version of her.
Tao Ran squeezed the young woman’s soft hand, casting aside her earlier annoyance. A faint, unconscious smile tugged at the corners of her lips. “Let’s go.”
Their tickets covered all attractions, allowing them to enter with a simple facial scan, bypassing ticket checks.
Since it was a weekday, the amusement park wasn’t crowded, eliminating the need to wait in lines.
Tao Ran helped Tang Fuzhi mount the carousel horse, her hand resting on Tang Fuzhi’s waist for support.
Tang Fuzhi’s waist was a sensitive area. Usually, a light touch was fine, but today Tao Ran’s firm grip made her feel a ticklish sensation. She instinctively leaned back slightly, and Tao Ran’s grip tightened, likely to prevent her from falling, finally helping her settle onto the horse.
Tao Ran sat behind Tang Fuzhi, her right arm circling Tang Fuzhi’s waist, her chin resting on Tang Fuzhi’s shoulder, her soft breath brushing against Tang Fuzhi’s ear.
It tickled a little.
After spending a week together, Tang Fuzhi had grown somewhat accustomed to their usual kisses and hugs, but those moments had always been private, just the two of them at home.
This was the first time they were being so intimate in public. Tang Fuzhi felt the warmth behind her, her cheeks flushing slightly.
Other couples and groups of female friends were also riding the carousel.
Soon, the carousel began to move, slowly and gently, making it the perfect first ride at the amusement park.
Tang Fuzhi gripped the carousel’s pole, watching the people, scenery, and objects around her begin to move.
Though both involved observing the world in motion, riding the carousel and watching from a car were entirely different experiences.
This sensation was novel for Tang Fuzhi.
Unbeknownst to her, as she became engrossed in her surroundings, Tao Ran’s eyes behind her remained fixed solely on her, completely unaffected by the environment.
They had visited amusement parks together before, but those times they had come as ordinary friends.
Occasionally, their hands would accidentally brush, but Tang Fuzhi would immediately pull away whenever she noticed.
Tao Ran’s gaze darkened slightly.
Tang Fuzhi was a girl who couldn’t hide her feelings well, yet her occasional behavior toward Tao Ran left her utterly perplexed.
Just when Tao Ran thought Tang Fuzhi might have a crush on her, Tang Fuzhi would distance herself. Conversely, when Tao Ran assumed Tang Fuzhi disliked her, the girl would show subtle kindness in small, tender ways.
After several such instances, Tao Ran longed to ask Tang Fuzhi how she truly felt, but she feared that shattering the fragile pretense of friendship would leave them with nothing at all.
Just as Tao Ran had finally mustered the courage to confess her feelings to Tang Fuzhi, Tang Fuzhi said, “I heard Huo Yuan might be interested in you.”
Tao Ran’s heart lurched. She instinctively wanted to explain to Tang Fuzhi, but before she could speak, Tang Fuzhi continued, “I think you two would be perfect together.”
Tang Fuzhi’s smile was as radiant and innocent as ever, yet it carried a cruel naivety. Despite barely knowing Huo Yuan, she rattled off his virtues, then twisted the knife with, “I think you two would be perfect together.”
In that moment, Tao Ran felt her blood turn to ice. Her hands and feet went numb, her mind blank.
She couldn’t believe Tang Fuzhi was truly oblivious. The person Tao Ran loved was right in front of her.
As Tang Fuzhi finished her well-wishing and turned to leave, Tao Ran’s hand moved faster than her thoughts, seizing Tang Fuzhi’s arm.
Tang Fuzhi glanced back, meeting Tao Ran’s gaze. Tao Ran’s grip was tight, painful even, but Tang Fuzhi remained silent, patiently waiting for Tao Ran to speak.
After what felt like an eternity, Tao Ran finally found her voice, her throat dry and hoarse. “I love you.”
Tang Fuzhi visibly stiffened, completely caught off guard by Tao Ran’s sudden declaration.
She seemed about to say something, but it was as if words were stuck in her throat. After a long moment, she forced a strained smile. “I know. I’m your best friend, and you’re my best friend too.”
Tao Ran’s anger flared. She refused to believe Tang Fuzhi didn’t understand her true meaning. For the first time, she shouted at Tang Fuzhi, “You know that’s not what I meant!”
Her anger twisted into a bitter laugh. “When I said I like you, I love you, I meant romantically, not platonically! Who wants to be your ‘best friend’? I want to be your girlfriend!”
Tang Fuzhi’s breath caught in her throat. She parted her lips, but no words came.
Her silence, in a way, was a rejection.
Tao Ran had already anticipated this. She took a deep breath, forcing her voice to remain calm.
She didn’t want to scare Tang Fuzhi. “Liking you is my problem. I know you don’t feel the same way, and that’s okay. But please don’t push me onto someone else.”
Whether it was Tang Fuzhi’s imagination or not, she thought she detected a hint of pleading in Tao Ran’s words.
After Tao Ran finished speaking, she released Tang Fuzhi and left.
Tao Ran had assumed that would be the end of it. Now that the window had been broken, she had even prepared a whole series of plans to pursue Tang Fuzhi. But the very next day, Tang Fuzhi was in a car accident.
The carousel turned slowly, but a ride didn’t last long and was soon over.
Tang Fuzhi had a wonderful time, her eyes sparkling with excitement as she eagerly took Tao Ran’s hand and led her to the next attraction: the roller coaster. “Let’s go on that one!”
She’d noticed the screams coming from the roller coaster as soon as they entered the park—men and women alike, their shrieks sounding so thrilling!
Tao Ran lowered her gaze to Tang Fuzhi’s delicate fingers clasping her hand. With a gentle squeeze, she curled her fingers around the girl’s soft hand and nodded. “Let’s go.”
The past was behind them. At least now Tang Fuzhi had her in her heart and mind. At least now Tang Fuzhi was still by her side.
That was enough.
