I Got A Girlfriend After Losing My Memory (Transmigration) - Chapter 17
Before Tang Fuzhi’s amnesia, their relationship had actually been much closer.
They shopped together, played games together, and video-called each other whenever they couldn’t meet in person.
Yet Tao Ran always felt like she couldn’t quite win her over. Their bond felt less like that of lovers or pursuer and pursued, and more like that of close girlfriends.
After Tang Fuzhi lost her memory, perhaps because she was still unfamiliar with Tao Ran, she maintained a distance.
Even when they kissed.
But Tao Ran could sense that Tang Fuzhi, after losing her memory, had become much easier to approach.
Before the amnesia, Tang Fuzhi had been like a carousel. Though they were so close, Tao Ran could never quite catch up to her.
But now, Tang Fuzhi was like a marathon. The distance was still vast, but with effort, Tao Ran could close the gap.
Perhaps Tao Ran’s words had been too sentimental, because Tang Fuzhi found herself unconsciously drawn into her emotions.
Never one for comforting others, Tang Fuzhi awkwardly grasped the hem of Tao Ran’s robe, her amber eyes meeting hers. “I never said I wouldn’t,” she murmured.
They slept in the same bed every night. Sitting together now was hardly a big deal.
Tao Ran’s face lit up instantly, snapping out of her reverie. She wrapped an arm around Tang Fuzhi’s slender waist, pressing her forehead against hers.
Still so easily fooled, she thought. A little vulnerability and she’ll agree to anything.
Her husky voice carried a subtle, almost imperceptible allure. “Why are you being so good?”
The faint scent of cedarwood clung to Tang Fuzhi. Gazing into Tao Ran’s gentle eyes, where her own reflection swam, she could hear the frantic pounding of her heart.
Time seemed to stand still. The bustling crowd around them blurred into a hazy background, and Tang Fuzhi’s vision narrowed until only Tao Ran remained in focus.
Their lips, the same shade of red, drew closer and closer.
In that moment, Tang Fuzhi found herself distracted by a fleeting thought: sharing the same lipstick actually made sense. At least their mouths wouldn’t be two different colors after the kiss.
Though, with such a small area, it probably wouldn’t even be noticeable.
Before Tao Ran could lean in for the kiss, a child’s voice shattered the intimate atmosphere.
“Mommy, what are those two ladies doing?”
The child’s innocent question, delivered in a pure, childlike tone, startled Tang Fuzhi into instinctively stepping back. She glanced at the little girl’s genuine curiosity and felt a wave of embarrassment wash over her.
The mother quickly scooped up the child and covered her eyes. “Nothing, sweetie. The ladies are just playing a game. Didn’t you want cotton candy? Let’s go get some.”
The more the mother tried to hide it, the more curious the little girl became. Her chubby hands tugged at her mother’s arm, trying to free her eyes. “What game? I want to play too!”
At six or seven years old, the little girl already had some weight to her. Combined with her constant squirming, her mother couldn’t restrain her for long.
Though Tao Ran was slightly annoyed by the child’s interruption, she couldn’t help but notice the blush on Tang Fuzhi’s cheeks and the way she deliberately turned her face away in embarrassment. It was rather endearing.
Like an ostrich burying its head in the sand when faced with something it doesn’t know how to handle, Tao Ran thought.
A faint smile curved her lips as she spoke gently, “Of course not. This game is only for people who like each other.”
The little girl’s gaze shifted between Tang Fuzhi and Tao Ran, her eyes widening in realization. “I get it! It’s like me and Mommy. Mommy loves kissing Yueyue’s cheeks too!”
Some things were too complicated to explain to a child, so Tao Ran decided to play along. “Almost.”
Seeing Tao Ran’s earnest yet deceptive expression, Tang Fuzhi shot her a subtle glare.
Satisfied with her answer, the little girl happily took her mother’s hand and waved goodbye. “Mommy’s taking Yueyue to get cotton candy now. Bye, pretty lady! Bye, pretty auntie!”
At that age, children can’t yet grasp the concept of age. The little girl simply assumed Tao Ran and Tang Fuzhi were like her and her mother, a loving mother-daughter pair.
Naturally, she addressed Tang Fuzhi, whom she perceived as the “daughter,” as “Sister,” and Tao Ran, whom she saw as the “mother,” as “Auntie.”
Not only Tao Ran and Tang Fuzhi were stunned, but even the little girl’s mother was dumbfounded. Afraid of offending them, she offered an apologetic smile and quickly corrected her daughter, “No, you should call both of them ‘Sister.'”
The little girl’s round, wide eyes glanced at them, her chubby face etched with confusion.
“But Auntie said they’re like Yueyue and Mommy. Doesn’t that mean Auntie is also that Sister’s mommy?”
Tang Fuzhi, who had been feeling slightly awkward, burst into laughter at the child’s words, shooting a teasing glance at Tao Ran.
“Children don’t understand these things,” the little girl’s mother said, embarrassed and unsure how to explain.
Tang Fuzhi stepped forward, knelt down in front of the girl, and gently stroked her hair. The child’s hair was soft and comforting to the touch.
“You’re right,” Tang Fuzhi said softly. “I’m the sister, and she’s the auntie.”
After saying goodbye to the little girl and her mother, Tang Fuzhi walked over to Tao Ran, surprised to see her with such a sour expression.
In the week they’d known each other, Tao Ran had always been gentle and smiling around her. It was rare to see her looking so grumpy, as if someone owed her millions.
Not that Tang Fuzhi disliked Tao Ran’s usual cheerfulness. She wasn’t some kind of masochist. It was just that Tao Ran’s constant, gentle smiles felt a bit unreal, as if the entire week had been a dream.
Seeing Tao Ran’s displeased expression now actually made Tang Fuzhi feel a bit more grounded.
At first glance, Tao Ran looked like she’d been put in a bad mood by a little girl. Tang Fuzhi found this amusing and deliberately tilted her head, stepping closer.
“Auntie?”
Tao Ran’s face darkened further.
Tang Fuzhi reached out and took her hand, gently shaking it like a kitten begging for attention, her voice soft and sweet.
“Come on, you’re in your twenties. Being called ‘Auntie’ by a little girl isn’t the end of the world.”
The girl’s soft, sweet voice softened Tao Ran’s heart, but her expression remained sour.
“Is that really what I’m upset about?”
Tao Ran wouldn’t have minded if the little girl had called both her and Tang Fuzhi “Auntie” or “Sister.”
But one calling her “Sister” while the other called her “Auntie,” and then mistaking her and Tang Fuzhi for mother and daughter? That was a generational leap!
They were clearly a couple.
Tang Fuzhi burst out laughing, finding Tao Ran’s reaction unexpectedly endearing.
Seizing the moment while Tao Ran wasn’t looking, she reached out and pinched her cheek.
The texture was surprisingly delightful.
