- Chapter 8 - Is This Marriage Based on Love? Or Is It a Conspiracy?
“Dad!”
Jiang Xu walked over and affectionately wrapped his arms around Ning Chu’s shoulders.
Ning Chu’s ink-black eyes flashed with surprise. “You remember who I am?”
“Of course I remember my own father.”
“I thought you had amnesia. I came over today just to see that confused look on your face.” Ning Chu looked disappointed. “Turns out you remember me after all. That is no fun at all.”
“…” Jiang Xu was speechless. Is having a child just for entertainment? It was clear that to his father, children were merely toys.
Jiang Xu sat on the sofa, his long legs resting casually on the coffee table, his posture relaxed and idle.
Ning Chu slapped his leg. “Sit up straight!”
“Dad, my head hurts!” Jiang Xu leaned against Ning Chu, lifting his bangs to reveal the gauze on his forehead.
“How did you get such a bad bump? Do not move yet.” Ning Chu picked up his phone. “I am going to take a photo and post it to my Moments.”
Jiang Xu’s sense of being touched vanished completely. He felt heartbroken. “Dad, am I really your biological son?”
“How can you question my loyalty to your other father?” Ning Chu started typing on his phone. “I am going to call him right now and tell him everything.”
Jiang Xu imagined his father’s stern, majestic face. He immediately pleaded for mercy. “Dad, I was wrong! I spoke without thinking. I deserve to be punished!” He patted his own mouth, his eyes filled with pleading.
Ning Chu snorted through his nose. “At least you are sensible.” His gaze swept over Jiang Xu, his expression teasing. “Waking up so late? You and Zhiyan must have had a good time last night.”
Mentioning last night made Jiang Xu angry. “Dad, Xu Zhiyan actually released pheromones to seduce me last night. I have every reason to suspect his character is flawed.”
“It is just a little intimacy between husbands. What could be the problem with that?” Ning Chu asked, puzzled. “Did you not say you liked his pheromones? You even said they were the best-smelling pheromones in the whole world.”
A question mark slowly formed in Jiang Xu’s mind. “…I said that?”
“You have praised his pheromones more than once.” Ning Chu noticed Jiang Xu’s strange reaction. “You do not remember?”
Jiang Xu shook his head. “My amnesia means I do not remember anything related to Xu Zhiyan. To be precise, I do not even remember how I ended up married to him.”
Ning Chu did not believe him. “Stop playing games! How could you possibly forget Zhiyan?”
“I am serious.”
“You really do not remember?”
“I am being more sincere than real pearls.”
Ning Chu lowered his eyelashes and sighed. “Then Zhiyan must be heartbroken!”
“…” Jiang Xu cried out indignantly, “Dad, am I your son, or is Xu Zhiyan your son?”
“A son-in-law is half a son. I have long treated Zhiyan as my own child.” Ning Chu poked Jiang Xu’s forehead. “Tell me the truth, do you really remember nothing about Zhiyan?”
“It is not that I remember nothing at all.” Jiang Xu snorted. “I remember everything about how he used to suppress, slander, and mock me in the entertainment industry.”
Ning Chu asked, “Did those things you mentioned actually happen?”
Jiang Xu stared at him with wide eyes. “Dad, have you been brainwashed by that jerk Xu Zhiyan? Do you doubt my word too? Heavens! My father does not love me.”
“Enough! Stop howling!”
Ning Chu knew his son was a drama queen, but Jiang Xu’s attitude toward Xu Zhiyan made him realize the severity of the situation. He patted Jiang Xu’s shoulder with a serious expression. “Sit up. I want to talk to you about something important.”
Jiang Xu immediately sat up straight, his bright, clear eyes fixed on Ning Chu. “Dad, you are the person I trust the most. I do not believe what others say. I only trust your words. Why did I get married to Xu Zhiyan?”
Ning Chu replied, “Because of love.”
“!!?!” Jiang Xu shook his head in disappointment. “The person I trust the most has lied to me. My father does not love me!”
“…” Ning Chu glanced at him. “If you did not like Zhiyan, why did you enter the entertainment industry? Such an obvious answer does not need me to elaborate further.”
“Marriage is not something that can be achieved through one-sided affection. The point is why Xu Zhiyan would want to marry me. A man like him would not be forced into marriage by someone’s casual declaration of love. Is it because we have a 100% compatibility rate? But that cannot be right. We measured it before, and it was only 79%.”
“The compatibility rate improved later.”
“This thing can be improved? I thought it was determined at birth!”
“For ordinary Alphas and Omegas, it is irreversible. But for high-level AO, that is not necessarily the case.”
Jiang Xu grasped the crucial point. “That jerk Xu Zhiyan used his high rank to deliberately tamper with our compatibility rate and forced me to register for marriage. I knew he was not a good person!”
Noticing Ning Chu’s look, Jiang Xu frowned. “Dad, why are you looking at me like that?”
“If you were not my son, I would honestly consider getting you a mirror.”
“…” Jiang Xu understood the implication. “Are you saying that I do not look in the mirror before I go out, so I do not know my own worth?”
“I am just reminding you that Zhiyan had no reason to do that. With his status, background, and appearance, he has no shortage of top-tier Omegas following him. If it were not for love, why would he choose you?”
Jiang Xu fell into deep thought. This was the exact question he could not fathom. Yet, he could not believe that someone who had mocked and disliked him would suddenly have a change of heart and fall in love with him.
Knowing his son well, Ning Chu realized that Jiang Xu still had doubts. He took out his phone and found a video. “My video calls have an automatic recording function. Watch this, and you will know if what I said is true or false.”
On the screen, Jiang Xu saw himself leaning on Xu Zhiyan’s shoulder, his familiar face filled with an unfamiliar sweetness and happiness.
“Dad, Zhiyan and I registered our marriage today.”
“Look! Here is the red certificate!”
Jiang Xu saw the familiar smile on the screen, exactly the same as the one in their marriage certificate. He looked so incredibly happy, just like a complete fool.
Is that me? It really is me!
If that expression were fake, then he would be talented enough to win an Oscar for his god-tier acting skills.
Jiang Xu began to doubt himself.
Is this marriage based on love? Or is it a conspiracy?
The suddenly increased high-level compatibility rate is suspicious. There is an even bigger issue between him and Xu Zhiyan. He would certainly get to the bottom of this. He would not let this marriage continue in such an unclear state.
