- Chapter 4 - Destined to be His Husband, Never to Escape
Before Jiang Xu could even start cursing, Shi Jin ran off. Before leaving, he told Jiang Xu that all his scheduled appearances would be suspended and urged him to rest well at home.
The ward fell silent once more. Jiang Xu had not yet recovered from the shock of his arch-rival becoming his husband, and his injury was still throbbing with a dull ache. He lay on the hospital bed, dazed and confused, and drifted off to sleep before long.
He did not know how much time had passed when he woke up. Hearing a faint sound coming from the balcony, he turned his head and saw Xu Zhiyan standing there, talking on the phone.
“Xuxu is still asleep. The doctor said he needs to stay in the hospital for observation overnight. Don’t worry, Father, I will take good care of him.”
“I have already contacted the director at the filming set; he will provide a reasonable explanation.”
“I will not allow Xuxu to film at production sets that have safety hazards again. The crew must be disciplined.”
“This time it was my negligence; I did not carefully vet his schedule. It will not happen again. I will let a professional team take over.”
Jiang Xu listened for a while and realized that Xu Zhiyan was speaking to his father. Tsk! If he did not already know what kind of person Xu Zhiyan was, he would have been completely deceived by this display of a perfect son-in-law. A Best Actor is still a Best Actor; his acting skills were top-tier.
Xu Zhiyan finished his call and discovered that Jiang Xu was awake. He walked over and asked, “Xuxu, are you hungry? Do you want a drink?”
“There is no one else in the ward now, so you do not need to keep pretending.”
Jiang Xu sat up in bed and stared at Xu Zhiyan. “Tell me the truth: did you get hold of some dirt on me and coerce me into marriage? Or is your family about to go bankrupt, requiring my family to invest funds, and you were sold off to our house to work yourself to the bone for me?”
Xu Zhiyan replied, “Don’t worry, we are not bankrupt. I can afford to support you.”
Jiang Xu challenged him, “Transfer me five billion, then, let me see how capable you are.”
Xu Zhiyan said, “I cannot transfer that.”
Jiang Xu squinted at him. “I knew it! You really are bankrupt.”
Xu Zhiyan pulled over a chair and sat down in front of him, casually picking up an apple to peel. “The night before we registered our marriage, all the assets under my name were transferred to you. I have no money now.”
“Don’t spread rumors! I have not taken a single cent from you.”
Seeing Xu Zhiyan’s meaningful smile, Jiang Xu suddenly began to panic. No way! Did he really run off with his arch-rival’s entire fortune?
“Don’t slander me. I am checking the account right now. If I do not find that much money…”
Jiang Xu’s eyes widened. He held his phone up and carefully examined the account balance. A row of zeros. Just how much money was this? Although he was a young master of a wealthy family, he had never seen so much money before. He must be seeing things. Jiang Xu rubbed his eyes, but when he looked again, the amount was still there.
!!!!
“This money… did you give it to me voluntarily?”
Xu Zhiyan replied, “Prenuptial agreement; it was a voluntary gift.”
“That means nothing to me.” Jiang Xu gritted his teeth. “I am not going to give the money back to you.” Having finally managed to hollow out his rival’s family fortune, there was no way he would hand it over easily.
Xu Zhiyan said, “No need to return it. I earn money just to support my husband.”
What was with this doting tone? Jiang Xu’s eyes were filled with vigilance. “Don’t think you can dull my senses just by saying that. I am going to keep an eye on you.” Jiang Xu pointed his finger at Xu Zhiyan. “I want to see what kind of scheme you are plotting.”
“Then you must watch me closely so you do not lose me.” Xu Zhiyan brought the peeled apple to him. “Eat an apple first; the servant will send over dinner soon.”
Jiang Xu was indeed a bit hungry, so he took the apple and took a bite. This marriage was definitely problematic; he had to investigate the reason for it.
When the servant delivered dinner, Jiang Xu leaned against the headboard to rest after eating. Because he had a mild concussion, any sudden movement caused a sense of dizziness, making it impossible for him to get up and walk around. Xu Zhiyan sat beside him, lowering his head to handle work matters.
Xu Zhiyan was such a striking person; no matter where he was, he easily attracted the attention of others. Jiang Xu’s gaze involuntarily fell upon him. An S-rank Alpha was top-tier in both appearance and temperament. It was a pity; he looked like a decent human being, but he simply did not act like one.
“Xuxu, what are you looking at?” Xu Zhiyan’s posture remained unchanged as he continued to read his documents, but his voice was laced with a smile.
Caught in the act of sneaking a peek, Jiang Xu blushed and defended himself, “I was looking to see when you are leaving.”
“I am staying at the hospital to accompany you tonight.”
Xu Zhiyan’s tone was very natural, but Jiang Xu’s expression was anything but. “I do not need your company; get out of here.”
“Accompanying a sick spouse is the most basic responsibility.” Xu Zhiyan put down his phone and looked up at him. “Tell me if you feel uncomfortable, and do not try to tough it out.”
Jiang Xu knew he was only staying out of a sense of duty. After all, they used to be like fire and water; he was repulsed by Xu Zhiyan, and Xu Zhiyan should feel the same.
“Why did we get married? Was it because our pheromone compatibility was 100%, and the Civil Affairs Bureau forced it?” Jiang Xu had heard of this; if the compatibility exceeded 95%, the bureau would intervene to enforce the marriage.
Xu Zhiyan’s eyes narrowed, a dark glint passing through them. His voice was lower than before. “Xuxu, I have told you before that our marriage was based on our mutual willingness. No one can force me to do things I do not want to do. Likewise, I would not force someone who hates me to marry me.”
Jiang Xu huffed through his nose. He was not only full of doubt toward his words but also held undisguised mockery. Did he not hate him enough already? The fact that Xu Zhiyan could say something like “an Omega is not qualified to share a stage with me” was proof enough of how deep his prejudice was.
Jiang Xu did not believe a single word of what he had just said.
“If I had not lost my memories, do you think I would let you just stand there and spout nonsense to fool me?”
“When you regain your memories, you will know whether what I said is true or false.” Xu Zhiyan leaned forward, his long, narrow phoenix eyes gazing directly into Jiang Xu’s. “But until you recover your memories, do not refuse my care.”
Jiang Xu turned his head away and shifted his body, moving as far away from the man beside him as possible. The scent of Xu Zhiyan’s pheromones was too intense; every time he smelled it, he felt like he was drunk, leaving him dizzy and disoriented.
Xu Zhiyan noticed his small movements but did not stop him. His little treasure was still resisting him, but that was fine. He had managed to make Jiang Xu fall in love with him once, so he could certainly make Jiang Xu fall in love with him all over again. He was destined to be Xu Zhiyan’s husband, and he would never be able to escape.
