Husband, Let Your Husband Treat Your Illness - Chapter 17
Chapter 17
After officially confirming their relationship, Dongfang Jin’s face was filled with the breeze of success every single day. He wished he could show off his beaming grin to everyone he met. He became even more obedient to Ye Mo so much so that he resigned from the Ye Family Hospital immediately. Upon leaving, he got to enjoy the sensation of being looked up to by everyone, which felt quite refreshing.
After leaving the hospital, Dongfang Jin quickly contacted various major hospitals he had collaborated with before, declaring that he was now a “free agent” and ready to take on various surgeries again. This announcement caused quite a stir; as soon as the word was out, requests for him to lead surgeries on all sorts of difficult and complicated cases came flooding in.
Dongfang Jin examined each invitation carefully and noted them down on his phone, planning to head home and discuss with Ye Mo which offers he should accept.
Suddenly, Dongfang Jin slammed on the brakes. He saw a man stepping out of a car—it was none other than Ye Mo’s eldest brother, Ye Xi. Seeing his “wife’s” family member, Dongfang Jin hurried out of his car and said, “Elder Brother, were you waiting here specifically for me?”
“Doctor Dongfang, I don’t believe the two of us are on such familiar terms. I would prefer it if you addressed me as Mr. Ye.” Ye Xi’s voice was as cold as ever. In the business world, he was known as the “Cold-Faced Swordsman” navigating the world with a frozen expression and a terrifyingly ruthless way of handling things.
Dongfang Jin was instantly taken aback by this sudden, chilling distance. It didn’t feel good, but having spent years navigating society, he had seen all types of people. He immediately adjusted his attitude. “Very well, Mr. Ye. May I ask what brings you to see me today?”
“It’s not quite suitable to speak here. Follow my car; we’ll find a place to talk.” With that, Ye Xi got back into his vehicle. Dongfang Jin had a vague idea of what Ye Xi wanted to discuss, but he hadn’t expected him to be so direct as to seek him out personally.
Dongfang Jin followed Ye Xi’s car through twist and turn for about half an hour until they arrived at a manor. Ye Xi stepped out, and a private butler came forward to assist him inside. Dongfang Jin, following behind, received no such treatment.
“Sit. This is my private manor. Few people come here. Everything here is home-grown and the wine is home-brewed; feel free to have a taste.” Although Ye Xi’s voice was steady, it couldn’t hide the underlying “killing intent” in his heart.
“No thank you, Mr. Ye. I still have to drive,” Dongfang Jin refused with a sound reason, leaving Ye Xi with no room to insist.
“Doctor Dongfang, you should know why I’ve brought you here today, shouldn’t you?” Ye Xi swirled the goblet in his hand, the crimson wine emitting an intoxicating aroma.
“Mr. Ye, if you have something to say, please speak plainly. Ye Mo is at home waiting for me to cook for him.” Dongfang Jin was neither humble nor arrogant. Years of operating at the surgical table had trained him to remain calm even if Mount Tai were to collapse before him.
“Doctor Dongfang, the only request I have for you today is: LEAVE! HIM!” Ye Xi emphasized those last two words heavily, as if they were a thousand-pound weight crashing onto the floor; one could almost imagine them burning holes into the ground.
Ye Xi wasn’t finished. “I don’t care how you do it, but I want you to leave him! Stop causing him trouble.” He took a sip of red wine. “Doctor Dongfang, you have a bright future ahead of you, and Ye Mo even more so. Are you not afraid that your presence will hinder his future? Tarnish his reputation in the business world? Rob him of the joy of having children later in life?”
These “three hindrances” echoed through the manor. Though not delivered with great force, they made Dongfang Jin’s head throb with a dizzying hum.
“If you truly want what’s best for him, then please leave him and never appear again! I will give you a sum of money enough to open your own hospital or ensure you live comfortably for the rest of your life.”
After listening to Ye Xi, Dongfang Jin laughed. It wasn’t a hearty laugh, but a cold, mocking one. First one, then two, then three until it became a string of derisive laughter.
“What are you laughing at?” Ye Xi’s sword-like eyebrows knitted together as he stared at the laughing man.
“Pathetic!” Dongfang Jin spat out.
“What did you say?!”
“I said you are pathetic!” Dongfang Jin repeated. “Do you think everything can be measured with money? Do you think I’m clinging to Ye Mo because of his wealth? Do you think I set my sights on him because of the Ye family fortune?” Dongfang Jin was becoming hysterical, feeling as though his heart was being squeezed. “You’re wrong! I’m telling you, you are dead wrong!”
Ye Xi was stunned by the outburst, his mind going blank as Dongfang Jin continued. “I truly love Ye Mo. Money has never been my primary criteria for judging a person. I, Dongfang Jin, am not that cheap! My feelings don’t need to be dictated by money!” Dongfang Jin panted heavily; he had wanted to say these things to this so-called “Eldest Brother” for a long time.
“If you came here today just to say this, I think you’re wasting your breath. I will not agree.” Dongfang Jin turned to leave. Ye Xi commanded, “Stop him!”
“Mr. Ye, Ye Mo and I officially confirmed our relationship a few days ago. You are his brother, so I won’t tell him you came to see me today to avoid affecting your brotherhood. But I ask that you stop interfering in our relationship. I truly hope this relationship can be accepted by everyone.”
As Dongfang Jin lifted his foot to leave, Ye Xi said, “Mo has had a girlfriend before. Don’t think his ‘confirmation’ is set in stone. Hearts change. If you won’t leave him, I’ll have to use other means. Let him go.” Following the command, the bodyguards made a “please” gesture, signaling him to leave.
Dongfang Jin turned back to Ye Xi. “Hearts may change, but mine won’t.” He walked out, not wanting to stay in that place for another second.
The moment he left, Ye Xi hurled his glass, shattering it into pieces. “Ungrateful!”
On the way home, Dongfang Jin kept ruminating on Ye Xi’s words. Most of it meant nothing to him, but the mention of Ye Mo having had a girlfriend made it impossible for him to stay calm. He knew his own romantic history perfectly, but what about Ye Mo’s? He had never asked; he knew nothing.
He drove home in this agitated state. Entering the house, he saw Ye Mo sitting on the sofa watching TV, wearing loose-fitting pajamas that revealed glimpses of skin. He instantly forgot the previous conversation, remembering only the suppressed grievances of the journey.
“You’re back? I’m hungry.” Those words shattered Dongfang Jin’s final defense. He lunged forward and swept Ye Mo into a tight hug. “What’s wrong? Hugging me the second you get in? Go cook! I’m hungry.” Ye Mo spoke in a half-coquettish, half-annoyed tone—the exact tone Dongfang Jin found most irresistible.
“Mo, don’t talk. Just let me hold you for a bit. Let’s just stay like this quietly.”
Ye Mo heard the distress in Dongfang Jin’s voice and realized something was wrong with his mood today. He didn’t pry; he just let Dongfang Jin hold him, feeling his breath and his warmth. He didn’t know what had happened, but seeing him like this made Ye Mo’s heart ache as if it were being cut by a knife.
After a while, Dongfang Jin felt his emotions stabilize. He smiled and said, “Mo, you must be hungry. I’ll go cook for you.” That smile broke Ye Mo’s heart even more.
Perhaps Ye Mo didn’t even realize when he had started caring so much about Dongfang Jin’s every expression and action, caring to the point that it dictated his own mood.
As Dongfang Jin stood up, Ye Mo grabbed his hand. “Forget it. You’ve had a long day. Let’s just order takeout.” Hearing this, Dongfang Jin felt himself nearing a breaking point; he needed to escape into the kitchen to avoid Ye Mo’s questioning. “It’s fine, I’ll do it. Food from outside isn’t clean; home-cooked is safest.” He maintained a carefree expression, and Ye Mo let him be.
Dongfang Jin began cooking, changing his clothes and putting on an apron. Just as he was getting into the rhythm and forgetting the unpleasantness, Ye Mo’s arms wrapped around him from behind. This was the first time Ye Mo had initiated a hug like this.
“Mo, the kitchen is full of grease and smoke. Go out quickly so you don’t get smothered.”
“What, you can handle it but I can’t?”
“That’s not what I meant. Fine, fine. If you want to stay, stay. Watch me cook.”
Ye Mo looked at Dongfang Jin’s back and felt a pang of pity. Finally unable to hold back, he asked, “What happened today? Did you run into someone?”
Upon hearing this, Dongfang Jin dropped and broke a spoon. Now Ye Mo was certain this was no simple matter. “Was it something at the hospital? Or something else?”
“Mo, please don’t ask, okay?” Dongfang Jin turned around and grabbed Ye Mo’s shoulders. “Don’t ask. Promise me.”
“Dongfang Jin, if you’re unhappy, I’ll be unhappy too. I don’t know when it started, but you already influence my mood. If you don’t tell me now, don’t ever speak to me again.” Ye Mo huffed and walked out of the kitchen, sitting on the living room sofa in silence.
Dongfang Jin immediately turned off the stove and rushed out to coax his “little ancestor.” “I’m sorry, I’m sorry!”
Seeing his look, Ye Mo couldn’t stay angry. “Talk. What happened today?”
Afraid that Ye Mo would ignore him, Dongfang Jin recounted everything Ye Xi had said to him.
“Dongfang Jin, I did have a girlfriend before, but that lasted less than a month. We didn’t even hold hands. Does that set your mind at ease?” Ye Mo was sharp; he immediately identified the root of Dongfang Jin’s insecurity.
“No, I wasn’t…” Dongfang Jin shook his head while trying to argue, looking incredibly adorable in his denial.
“Since my ‘dear brother’ treated you this way, I think I need to have a talk with him too.”
“Mo! Don’t go.”
“Don’t worry about me. I’ll handle the talk properly.”
