Husband, Let Your Husband Treat Your Illness - Chapter 16
Chapter 16
The competition results were out, and the Dongfang family elders seemed quite unwilling to accept it. A group of them began to act shamelessly.
“Xiao Mo, you can’t compete on their behalf.” “Exactly, how can a referee help one of the competing teams?” “Xiao Mo, give us another chance, okay?” “Let’s just do one more round, please?”
Looking at the elders pleading with him one by one, Ye Mo felt a bit embarrassed. After all, he was a newcomer, and having a group of elders beg him like this was a bit much; he didn’t know what to say.
“Dad, you’re the ones who agreed just now that Xiao Mo could compete. How can you go back on your word now?” “Exactly, how shameless!” “Dad, is it because you don’t want to part with that one million yuan, so you’re making excuses?” “Honestly, you people add up to six or seven hundred years of age. How can you break your word in front of us ‘children’?”
As the Dongfang elders spoke, the juniors didn’t back down either. They threw the words right back, leaving the elders fuming and speechless. A war of words broke out between the two sides. Clearly, Dongfang Jin’s side had the upper hand because they had reason on their side. The juniors’ spirits had never been this high; since they rarely won these competitions, they momentarily forgot that the people across from them were their elders.
“Enough! Stop arguing!” Ye Mo shouted loudly. Both factions finally ceased their bickering and looked to Ye Mo, the referee, to see what he would say. “Since the elders are unsatisfied, we can certainly give them a break.” At this, the juniors’ faces fell. “However, while we can let you off, you must pay that one million yuan first before we continue.” Hearing this, the juniors were happy again.
Since Ye Mo had spoken, everyone had to comply. The elders took out their phones and began transferring money to their children. Having received the million yuan, the Dongfang children were delighted and stopped caring about the previous hiccup. Dongfang Jin, on the other hand, very smoothly transferred the million he just received directly to Ye Mo.
“Mo, that must have been hard on you just now.” Dongfang Jin placed a kiss on the nape of Ye Mo’s neck, his arms wrapped around Ye Mo’s waist, leaning quietly against him.
“What was hard about it? When I was at the company, I handled situations much more difficult than this. This little scene is nothing.” Ye Mo’s hand fell upon Dongfang Jin’s encircling arms, giving them a firm squeeze. “But you guys, why were you so unwilling to yield?”
“They always used to win. It’s rare for us to get a victory, so naturally, we weren’t going to let it go.” Ye Mo heard a hint of grievance and a child-like stubbornness in Dongfang Jin’s voice. In that moment, he realized the big man behind him wasn’t invincible; he still had a part of him that was like a little boy.
“Then by giving away your victory so easily, wouldn’t you all hate me to death?” Ye Mo teased Dongfang Jin. “If we lose later, will you think of today’s failure every time you see me?”
“We won’t lose!” “What?” “With you here, I will never lose.”
The people surrounding them could hardly bear the sight anymore. Dongfang Hao and his wife, seeing how affectionate Ye Mo and Dongfang Jin were, were naturally very relieved.
“Big Brother! Enough with the mushiness! The competition isn’t over yet!” Dongfang Yongxiao’s words snapped the couple back to reality. Dongfang Jin pulled himself together to face the upcoming rounds, and Ye Mo shook off the moment to continue his role as referee.
The following three rounds were neck-and-neck, but the juniors still held a one-round lead. It all came down to the final round. If the elders won, it would be a draw; if the juniors won, they’d take the overall victory! Everyone held their breath as they waited for Ye Mo to draw the final competition item.
Holding the paper in his hand, Ye Mo felt more nervous than when he signed authorizations at the company. He slowly unfolded the slip and read the words clearly: “Collaborative Recitation.”
Ye Mo felt a bit doubtful about those words. Recite what exactly? He looked up at the juniors, who all wore miserable expressions. “What’s wrong? Why such grim faces?”
“Mo, you don’t know. Collaborative recitation is the elders’ strongest suit.” “Yeah, Brother Mo, they can recite an entire pharmacology textbook together.”
Seeing everyone’s disappointment, Ye Mo didn’t want to let their imminent victory slip away. He said, “In that case, I will decide the content for today’s recitation.” “Fine!” Neither the elders nor the juniors objected. “Then we shall recite Bai Juyi’s Song of Everlasting Regret. Each team has twenty minutes to memorize it. Whoever fails to continue first loses.”
Now the juniors were thrilled, and relaxed smiles appeared on their faces. Though the elders found it difficult, they accepted the challenge gracefully, quickly taking out their phones to divide the work and begin memorizing.
Twenty minutes passed, and it was nearly 4 AM. The elders went first. Their strategy was one couplet per person in a relay. However, when they reached “In the dust beneath Mawei Slope, her jade face is gone, leaving only the place where she died,” they simply couldn’t continue and had to declare failure.
When it was the juniors’ turn, Dongfang Yongxiao, the author, started off. In one breath, he reached the point where the elders had failed and then surged past it. The others followed with a line or two, and as they neared the end, Dongfang Jin took over, reciting: “In the heavens, we wish to be twin birds flying wing to wing; on earth, we wish to be two trees with branches intertwined. Though the long heavens and enduring earth may one day end, this regret shall stretch on forever, without end.”
Under the gaze of everyone else, the two looked at each other and smiled. The look Dongfang Jin gave Ye Mo was filled with love; those words didn’t sound like a rote recitation, but like a genuine confession of the heart. Although Dongfang Jin’s feelings for Ye Mo were well-established, he always felt a sliver of uncertainty, a fear that this person didn’t truly belong to him.
Conversely, Ye Mo saw the burning passion in Dongfang Jin’s eyes. After so many days, he knew Dongfang Jin’s intentions were sincere, and he even doubted if he could ever find someone better if he left him. Unknowingly, Ye Mo realized he had become unable to leave Dongfang Jin; he was just too stubborn to admit it out loud.
“Dongfang Jin, the month is up. I want to say…” The unfinished sentence tugged at Dongfang Jin’s heart. He became instantly tense, more nervous than he had ever been during surgery. “…In the future, you still have to cook for me.”
Dongfang Jin was a bit dazed. What did that mean? Were they staying together? Or was it over? “Big Brother! You’re so dense! Mo has said that much, don’t you understand what it means?” Only then did our “Big Brother” realize the meaning behind the words. “So… you agree?” Ye Mo shyly turned his face away. “You already know, why ask me?”
Dongfang Jin’s joy was beyond words. Even though they had already been intimate, he had never heard Ye Mo personally acknowledge their relationship, which had left him feeling unsettled. Now that he had a complete answer, he felt like he could fly. Coupled with the competition win, it was a double blessing. He wanted nothing more than to kiss Ye Mo right then and there.
“Alright, alright, so many people are watching. Have some decorum,” Ye Mo scolded playfully. “I’m just happy! I want everyone to know that you are Dongfang Jin’s ‘wife’ (xiufu).”
At those last words, Ye Mo’s expression shifted. “What did you just call me?” He was smiling beautifully, but there was a hint of “murder” in his eyes. “Wife? What’s wrong, isn’t it right?” The onlookers sighed. Oh, Big Brother! Did you already forget how Dongfang Yi got drunk? He’s lost his mind from happiness.
“Wife? Have you ever seen a man being called a ‘wife’?” Dongfang Jin finally snapped out of it. “Mo, I’m wrong! I won’t call you that anymore!” “For the sake of Grandpa and Grandma, I won’t hold it against you.” “So Grandpa and Grandma have more ‘faces’ than I do?” “Obviously!”
The competition ended in a total victory for the juniors. They would have a week of freedom and ten days of vacation. It couldn’t be better. They all planned to sleep and then call their teachers or bosses to request leave and go out to have fun.
Ye Mo naturally followed Dongfang Jin upstairs to his room. The moment the door opened and the light flicked on, Ye Mo was startled by the decor. The cabinets, the bed, and everything visible were either blue or white. Even the colorful books were wrapped in blue or white covers.
“Mo, what do you think? This is my room,” Dongfang Jin proudly introduced. “This place really looks like a hospital ward,” Ye Mo remarked. Dongfang Jin was speechless; he wasn’t the first person to say that. He could only accept it gracefully. “I’ve liked blue and white since I was a kid, and after becoming a doctor, I liked them even more. Pure and clean.” “Then why aren’t your clothes blue and white?” “Blue and white clothes? Don’t you think that’s a bit silly?” This time, it was Ye Mo who was speechless.
“Mo, let’s get some sleep. I don’t have to report to the hospital for a while anyway,” Dongfang Jin said. “Dongfang Jin, I’ve been thinking about something.” “Tell me.” “Don’t stay at the Ye family hospital anymore.” “Why?” “The Ye family hospital is great, but I think it will hinder your development. Besides, you aren’t the type of person to enjoy a life of ease, are you?”
Though he didn’t say it often, Ye Mo understood him. Staying in one hospital for a lifetime was something Dongfang Jin could never do. “Mo, once I’ve spent these days with you, I’ll resign and go back to being a Doctor Without Borders.” “Whatever decision you make, I will support you.” With that, Ye Mo stepped forward, wrapped his arms around Dongfang Jin’s neck, and kissed his lips.
Dongfang Jin’s heart surged like a river; this was the first time Ye Mo had initiated a kiss. He responded eagerly, his tongue exploring Ye Mo’s mouth, savoring his taste.
“Dongfang Jin…” “What is it, Mo?” “Change the decor. It’s making me uncomfortable.” “Okay.”
With that, the two collapsed onto the bed for a night of passion.
“Uncle! I told you that’s our ‘sister-in-law’!” “You kids are something else!” “We won so completely today.”
It turned out the entire Dongfang clan, young and old, had been eavesdropping outside the door, having secretly placed bets. As the sounds inside grew louder, they finally returned to their rooms to rest.
“Mo! Let’s continue!” “…Be gentle.”
