How I Accidentally Bent My Best Friend - Chapter 70.1
“What?” Chen Yushu widened her eyes slightly, utterly confused.
Unbeknownst to her, in Lu Wei’s script, she had already become someone forced to abandon her lover in the dilemma between love and family bonds.
Lu Wei’s lips trembled as she muttered under her breath, “Your mother… she doesn’t approve of us.”
Chen Yushu grew increasingly bewildered. “Huh? What on earth are you talking about?”
“I, ” Lu Wei suddenly snapped back to reality, swallowing nervously and shaking her head hurriedly. “It’s nothing. I just realized your mom doesn’t seem to want me hanging out with you.”
“Uh.” Chen Yushu raised an eyebrow. “You’re only realizing this now?”
Lu Wei: “…”
By the time they reached the hotel and settled their luggage, it was already quite late. Chen Sinan handed them the performance tickets, gave a few instructions, then left with Xu An.
The moment the door closed, Lu Wei could no longer contain herself. Lifting the hem of her shirt to fan herself, her fair, slender waist became faintly visible.
Just then, Chen Yushu suddenly turned around. Lu Wei froze mid-action, acutely aware that they were now alone in the room. Suddenly feeling self-conscious, she quickly lowered her hands and aimlessly wandered around the space.
Having just returned from outside, the lingering heat hadn’t yet dissipated. Chen Yushu wiped sweat while searching for the air conditioner remote.
Seeing Chen Yushu approach, Lu Wei hastily moved aside. But no sooner had she found a spot to stand than Chen Yushu turned and came toward her again.
Instantly, the reasonably sized room felt cramped and suffocating, leaving Lu Wei with nowhere to retreat. She dodged left and right, wishing she could shrink into a ball and bury herself underground.
“Move over, you’re in the way,” Chen Yushu said irritably after failing to find the remote.
“I, ” Lu Wei couldn’t explain her unease and silently hugged herself. “What are you looking for?”
Chen Yushu pointed at the air conditioner.
“This?” Lu Wei slowly extended her hand from behind her back, revealing a white remote in her palm.
Chen Yushu clicked her tongue in annoyance and stepped closer. “Why didn’t you take it out earlier?”
“You didn’t ask,” Lu Wei retorted confidently. But the next moment, as Chen Yushu drew near, her body tensed up, limbs suddenly awkward. When Chen Yushu came too close, she plopped down onto the bed.
Chen Yushu paused, giving her a puzzled look.
Flustered, Lu Wei offered an awkward smile and quickly handed over the remote.
Cool air soon filled the room. Lu Wei sat directly in front of the vent, quietly watching Chen Yushu organize her things until she sneezed from the cold.
Hearing this, Chen Yushu glanced up. “Aren’t you going to wash up? Why are you still sitting there?”
“Oh.” Lu Wei sniffled and responded somewhat sluggishly.
After her shower, Lu Wei returned to her spot with a towel around her neck, continuing to secretly observe Chen Yushu’s every move.
Thus, the room remained submerged in an unusual silence. Chen Yushu gradually grew uncomfortable under that faint but persistent gaze, her movements becoming stiff.
Not daring to look back, Chen Yushu quickly grabbed her pajamas and nearly fled into the bathroom.
“Achoo!”
As soon as Chen Yushu stepped out, she saw Lu Wei still curled up in the same spot, hair wet and unblown. Frowning slightly, she approached. “What are you doing.”
The moment she spoke, Lu Wei was startled, clutching her chest as she looked at Chen Yushu. “When did you come out?”
“Just now.” Chen Yushu noticed her phone was lit up and couldn’t help glancing at it seemed to be a chat interface with someone else.
Seeing this, Lu Wei guiltily covered the screen and quietly switched the interface. “Oh, by the way, I just found out how amazing Sinan and her band are!”
“Hmm?” Chen Yushu raised an eyebrow slightly in confusion. “How did you find out?”
“Look.” Lu Wei held up her phone. “This performance is at a pretty well-known local music festival. They usually invite.”
“Really?” Chen Yushu leaned in a little closer, bending down to look at Lu Wei’s phone with her.
“These are performances from previous years.” Lu Wei tapped on a video. “I’ve watched quite a few.”
Just then, a drop of water suddenly fell from above onto her neck, cold and startling, making Lu Wei shiver.
The droplet slid down into her collar, the warmth of her skin tracing its unusual path, capturing Lu Wei’s full attention.
A moment later, her eyes shifted slightly to the side, her gaze sliding from Chen Yushu’s chin to the wet hair clinging to her cheek, where a droplet now hung precariously at the tip.
The next second, the droplet separated from the strands and splashed onto her collarbone. Lu Wei’s heart trembled, feeling as though this drop was somehow hotter than the previous one.
“What were you saying you watched?” Chen Yushu asked, tilting her head after finishing the video.
Lu Wei’s eyes flickered. She licked her lips and recalled, “Oh, I said I’ve looked up a lot of guides. We should get up early tomorrow to buy everything we need.”
Hearing the mention of waking up early, Chen Yushu’s brow furrowed almost imperceptibly. She hadn’t had a chance to sleep in for a long time due to preparing for final exams. If it weren’t for the performance tomorrow afternoon, she would have loved to just lie in bed for three days straight.
Lu Wei happened to catch her expression and quickly amended, “Well, the mall isn’t far. I can go by myself.”
Surprised, Chen Yushu raised an eyebrow and chuckled, “Since when are you so considerate?”
“What kind of question is that!” Lu Wei immediately retorted. “Am I that unreliable?”
“Mhm.” Chen Yushu leaned lazily against the edge of the table, looking down at her. “You weren’t like this before. What’s changed?”
“Oh?” Lu Wei tilted her head in confusion, then, as if thinking of something, a faint sparkle gradually lit in her pupils, shimmering with a subtly enticing charm.
Propping her chin in her hand, she looked up directly into Chen Yushu’s eyes, her lips curving slightly. “What’s changed?”
The atmosphere in the corner abruptly shifted. Chen Yushu’s mind went blank, her body stiffening, losing its earlier languor. She instantly regretted provoking her.
Then, Lu Wei lowered her head, pressed her lips together, and let out a soft laugh. When she looked up again, the light in her eyes was even brighter, captivating and mesmerizing.
Chen Yushu’s heart skipped a beat. Flustered, she wrapped her arms around herself and rubbed them. “Why does it still feel a bit hot?”
“Really? But why do your hands feel cold to me?”
Lu Wei took her hand, but her gaze remained fixed on Chen Yushu’s face, as if enjoying her discomfort.
Realizing this, Chen Yushu felt a surge of annoyance. Though she wanted to pull her hand away, she forced it to stay still, then clasped Lu Wei’s hand firmly and said calmly, “Maybe it’s because I just took a shower.”
A flicker of astonishment flashed in Lu Wei’s eyes, and she froze completely, staring blankly at Chen Yushu. It took her a long moment to snap out of it, and she let out a dazed, “Oh I see. Right, where were we just now?”
Seeing this, Chen Yushu smiled in satisfaction, leisurely withdrawing her hand and tapping Lu Wei’s head. “It’s so late, and you’re not sleeping yet. What else did you want to say?”
“I, ” Lu Wei licked her lips. “Let’s… let’s sleep.”
“Mm.” Chen Yushu gave her a once-over, then turned to walk away.
Just then, Lu Wei suddenly stood up as well, her chair scraping backward with a harsh screech. Chen Yushu paused mid-step, inexplicably tense.
“Ahem, I just wanted to tell you,” Lu Wei said, touching her earlobe, her expression slightly embarrassed. After a pause, she added, “I really have changed.”
Chen Yushu’s heart began to pound, a silence that felt earth-shattering.
“In every way.”
The performance started in the afternoon. By the time the two arrived, every stage was already surrounded by crowds some standing, some sitting and the air buzzed with noise.
“Oh my god! There are so many people!” Lu Wei exclaimed, looking around in disbelief.
Though the sun wasn’t too strong that day, the temperature was still high. Waves of heat rolled through the air, and with the dense crowds, they could only inch forward at a snail’s pace.
Chen Yushu, already feeling lightheaded from the heat, snorted irritably, “If it weren’t for your dawdling, we’d have been here earlier!”
“Hey, I was just ” Lu Wei turned to reply but suddenly realized Chen Yushu was no longer behind her. Her heart skipped a beat, and she craned her neck to look around.
Still no sign of her. Panicked, she began pushing her way back through the crowd.
Just then, someone grabbed her arm, and Chen Yushu’s voice followed, “Where are you going?”
Lu Wei let out a sudden sigh of relief, turning to gaze at her with a pitiful expression. “You disappeared the moment I turned around.”
“You” Chen Yushu’s heart softened instantly, and she forgot what she was about to say. She reached out her hand. “Let’s hold hands.”
“Hehe.” Lu Wei broke into a grin, placing her hand in Chen Yushu’s palm, then adjusting their grip until their fingers were interlaced.
Chen Yushu flinched awkwardly, but Lu Wei immediately tightened her hold.
“Now you can’t run away,” Lu Wei declared, raising their clasped hands with a slight lift of her chin.
“Silly.”
A while later, they arrived at the stage where Chen Sinan’s band was performing. They found a slightly less crowded spot, spread out a blanket, and sat down.
As the music started, the atmosphere gradually grew more electric. Almost everyone became immersed in the rhythm, and Chen Yushu was no exception.
Lu Wei sat slightly behind her, stealing glances without restraint.
Chen Yushu’s profile was bathed in sunlight, her straight nose appearing almost translucent, with a faint layer of fine down on her skin.
The rhythmic drumbeats served as both an accompaniment and a cover for the pounding of Lu Wei’s heart, allowing her to indulge without reservation.
Perhaps her gaze was too intense and focused, because at one point, Chen Yushu suddenly became aware of it. Her previously relaxed posture stiffened, and she could no longer maintain her ease.
Boom!
Just then, a loud rumble echoed, and the sky instantly darkened.
The crowd was startled, murmuring about the thunder and the impending rain.
Instinctively, Chen Yushu turned to look at Lu Wei and at that very moment, Lu Wei threw herself directly into her arms.
“Hey, you.” Chen Yushu froze for a second, rooted to the spot in a fluster.
“You scared me!” Lu Wei lifted her head, the panic in her eyes not yet faded, like a startled puppy.
Chen Yushu was taken aback again, her heart pounding as she quickly averted her gaze.
Soon, raindrops the size of beans began pelting the ground, plunging the scene into brief chaos before umbrellas popped up one after another.
Chen Yushu hurriedly dug an umbrella out of her bag, stood up, and opened it. Lu Wei stood up too, pressing so close that Chen Yushu immediately stumbled back half a step, unable to bear it.
The rain poured down noisily, drumming against the umbrella and sliding off the sides, soaking both their shoulders.
Someone ran past in the rain, accidentally bumping into Chen Yushu. She acknowledged their apology, and when she turned back, she saw Lu Wei staring intently at her, eyes misty with the steam of evaporated rain, warm and damp.
Voices, rain, and music blended together a noisy world, yet this spot remained quiet, with intense emotions flickering vividly in each other’s eyes.
The piano melody drifted gently, followed by a rapid, intense drumbeat that instantly ignited the atmosphere to a new peak.
The heavy rain became the best dance partner. Through the curtain of rain, Chen Yushu watched the reveling crowd, their excitement fermenting wildly.
The next second, Lu Wei’s magnified face appeared before her, hair drenched, tiny droplets clinging to her lashes as she stared unblinkingly.
“What are you doing?” Chen Yushu reached out, trying to pull her under the umbrella, but Lu Wei didn’t move, flicking a handful of water onto her face. “We’re already wet, might as well enjoy the rain to the fullest.”
Chen Yushu stepped back. “Go crazy on your own, I’m not joining you.”
“Really?” Lu Wei hopped toward her with both feet together, deliberately splashing water all over her pants.
“You’re so annoying!” Chen Yushu, holding the umbrella, struggled to dodge. “Get away from me, Lu Wei!”
“Stop resisting, just close the umbrella.”
“Don’t come any closer! Stay away from me.”
Half an hour later, the rain lightened and gradually stopped.
Lu Wei was completely soaked, water dripping continuously from her hair.
Chen Yushu, affected as well, wasn’t much better off. Her wet clothes clung to her skin, hot and sticky, making her extremely uncomfortable.
Meanwhile, Lu Wei, wringing water from her clothes, still found time to flick droplets at her.
