How I Accidentally Bent My Best Friend - Chapter 69
Chen Yushu’s pupils trembled, and she froze instantly. The soft imprint of lips touched her cheek, lingering for just a moment before pulling away.
Before she could even process it, Lu Wei had already settled back into her seat, pursing her lips as she looked at Chen Yushu, a faint glimmer in her eyes.
“What are you doing?” The sensation on her cheek seemed to magnify, as if tiny ants were crawling across it. Chen Yushu bit the inside of her cheek, but after a moment, she couldn’t resist rubbing the spot with her hand.
“Didn’t you tell me to kiss you?” Lu Wei bit down on her chopsticks, her large, innocent eyes wide and clueless, making her look pure and harmless.
Hearing this, Chen Yushu was taken aback. She quickly covered the phone’s receiver, leaned in, and whispered to Lu Wei, “I told you to wipe the rice off your face, not to”
“Oh, really?” Lu Wei’s eyes shifted guiltily, her expression the picture of innocence. “Well, you didn’t make it clear earlier.”
“You!” Chen Yushu couldn’t argue with her, so she simply propped her chin on her hand, covering half of her cheek.
Lu Wei mimicked her, resting her chin in her palm, secretly brushing her fingers against her own lips before quickly hiding her rising smile and looking away.
Just then, Chen Sinan’s voice came through the phone. “What did Lu Wei say?”
“She ” Chen Yushu glared irritably at the girl across from her, who was still feigning innocence and pitifulness, then spoke directly to Chen Sinan. “She said she’s not going. I’ll go by myself.”
“Really?” Chen Sinan sounded surprised and asked again, “She said that?”
Chen Yushu hesitated for a moment, only to hear Lu Wei exclaim, “Go where? Where are you going? Are you asking me?”
“You’re so loud.” Chen Yushu covered her other ear. “I’m going to hang out with my sister. What would you be doing there?”
“But you can’t just decide for me and say I’m not going!” Lu Wei puffed out her cheeks, placed her hands on her hips, and stood up, leaning close to Chen Yushu’s ear to speak to Chen Sinan on the other end. “Sinan, I want to go! Chen Yushu is falsely relaying my wishes!”
“What nonsense are you spouting?” Chen Yushu tried to push her away, but as she turned her head slightly, she caught sight of Lu Wei’s face up close so near that the texture of her skin and the fine hairs were clearly visible.
At that moment, Lu Wei turned her head as well.
Their eyes met unexpectedly, as if faint sparks of light flashed between them, colliding in the air with tiny, electric crackles.
Amid the strange atmosphere, Chen Sinan’s hearty laughter echoed from the receiver. “I can’t stand you two. Let me know when you’re coming, and I’ll pick you up.”
Chen Yushu quickly replied, “Mm, okay, got it.”
After the meal, the two walked to the library as if nothing had happened, side by side but maintaining a slight distance, a faint awkwardness hanging in the air.
Chen Yushu stared straight ahead at the path, while Lu Wei kept sneaking glances at her, her furtive movements making it obvious she was up to no good.
Something’s off! Definitely off!
Lu Wei narrowed her eyes slightly, covertly observing Chen Yushu’s every move as she replayed the events in her mind. Then, her features put on a vivid performance.
In the end, however, a smile crept into the corners of her eyes and lips, and her heartbeat spiraled out of control.
A sense of impending victory swelled in her chest, warm and overwhelming. Lu Wei felt a rush of heat and couldn’t resist licking her lips. An urgent thought began to circle in her mind, eager to burst forth.
Nervousness made her stomach twitch slightly. She opened her mouth several times, only to swallow her words each time, leaving her with nothing but a long, shaky breath.
As they walked and neared the library, she couldn’t resist gently bumping into Chen Yushu’s shoulder. Swinging the test paper in her hand as if nothing had happened, she asked, “So, is that it?”
“Lu Wei!” Chen Yushu stopped abruptly, her voice rising a notch. “Are you itching for a beating? Haven’t you had enough?”
“I’m not scared,” Lu Wei muttered. “Hitting is affection, scolding is love.”
“You” Chen Yushu was once again left speechless. “You’re just out of your mind! I don’t want to talk to you!”
Without waiting for Lu Wei’s reply, Chen Yushu quickened her pace and hurried ahead.
Only when the distance between them grew did Chen Yushu’s tense body relax. The heartbeat she had deliberately suppressed broke free, pounding against her chest.
Lu Wei opened her mouth to call her back but noticed she was walking faster and faster, almost breaking into a run.
For a moment, Lu Wei froze in place, thinking, Am I really that scary?
Watching Chen Yushu flee as if escaping, Lu Wei frowned and fell into deep thought. What exactly does Chen Yushu mean? I just don’t get it.
At this thought, she clutched her chest, feeling a pang of heartache. Could it be that I’m overthinking things again?
But she immediately shook her head in denial.
Thus, in the following days, Chen Yushu clearly sensed that someone was pushing their luck even further.
She noticed it, found it amusing, but also felt increasingly unable to handle it, fearing that Lu Wei might say something shocking at any moment.
After two days of watching Lu Wei’s peacocking, she couldn’t take it anymore and shooed her away. Only then did she manage to peacefully survive finals week.
The last exam was scheduled for the morning. As soon as it ended, the two set off for the city where Chen Sinan was, just in time for her performance the next day.
“A performance? Sinan’s band is still together?” Lu Wei asked in surprise during the ride. “Didn’t your mom tell her to disband it?”
Chen Yushu replied, “No, that was a lie.”
Lu Wei let out an “oh” and said, “That’s good, then. But why keep it from me, even if you’re hiding it from your mom?”
“What’s it to you?” Chen Yushu shot her a glance. “Why do you want to know everything?”
Lu Wei blurted out, “Because it’s related to you.”
Chen Yushu froze, the words on the tip of her tongue instantly forgotten.
Here we go again! Lately, it’s just endless!
Unable to bear it, Chen Yushu pursed her lips and turned her gaze unnaturally to the scenery outside the window.
Seeing this, Lu Wei paused for a second before suddenly understanding. Suppressing a smile at the corner of her lips, she couldn’t help but stretch her foot forward, swaying it slightly, then turned to look at the other window, where Chen Yushu’s reflection was visible.
At nine in the evening, they arrived at their destination. Just as they stepped out of the high-speed rail station, they received a call from Chen Sinan.
“It’s so late, you don’t need to pick us up.”
Before she could finish, Chen Sinan interrupted, “I already see you. Over here.”
Out of the corner of her eye, Chen Yushu noticed someone waving. Before she could get a clear look, Lu Wei responded and pulled her forward.
Accompanying Chen Sinan was another person standing slightly behind her tall, with medium-length hair, holding a small fan as if fanning Chen Sinan.
But soon, for some reason, after Chen Sinan turned and said something to her, the girl lowered her fan. Whatever she did next earned her a light smack from Chen Sinan.
As they drew closer, the subtle movements between the two became increasingly noticeable. Chen Yushu watched the pair standing shoulder-to-shoulder, feeling an indescribable sensation.
At the same time, Chen Sinan approached, her gaze suddenly halting and fixing on their still-intertwined hands.
It took Chen Yushu a moment to react, but then, as if scalded by fire, she swiftly pulled her hand away.
Such an exaggerated movement only made her seem more guilty.
Chen Yushu was filled with regret, her heart crawling with the sensation of ten thousand ants. In that moment, she was so flustered that she broke into a sweat.
Lu Wei slowly shifted her gaze, quickly glancing at Chen Yushu before realizing that the person before her was Chen Yushu’s older sister. Coupled with her own improper thoughts, she couldn’t help but feel a pang of guilt.
The air froze for a second, plunging into an odd atmosphere.
Chen Sinan was the first to break the eerie silence. “Let’s go, we’ll take you back to the hotel to drop off your things first.”
“Mm, okay,” Chen Yushu replied, putting a little distance between herself and Lu Wei.
However, Lu Wei didn’t notice this subtle change at all, still lost in thought over Chen Yushu’s earlier reaction a mix of joy and worry.
Ordinary friends wouldn’t react like that over just holding hands, would they?
But Chen Yushu seemed to care a lot about Chen Sinan’s opinion. What if Chen Sinan didn’t approve.
Wait! And there was Chen Yushu’s mother, who clearly seemed old-fashioned. If she found out I was trying to steal Chen Yushu away, wouldn’t she stage a scene of tearing lovers apart by force?
Her thoughts drifted further and further without her realizing it. In just a few short minutes, Lu Wei’s mind had already conjured up a tragic love story of life and death.
Meanwhile, Chen Yushu was suffering from being crowded. It was as if Lu Wei had installed a tracker on her no matter which way she moved, Lu Wei would press close.
Chen Yushu had reached her limit and was about to push her away when Chen Sinan suddenly turned around and said, “Oh, I forgot to introduce you. This is another member of the band, Xu An. He’s about the same age as me.”
Xu An turned and smiled at Chen Yushu before looking back at Chen Sinan, muttering with a hint of dissatisfaction, “What do you mean, about the same? I’m two years older than you.”
“Two years? No way,” Chen Sinan paused mid-step, holding up a finger. “At most a year and a half.”
Xu An took her finger and shook his head with a smile. “Wrong. It’s one year, seven months, and nine days.”
Chen Yushu watched the two with a complicated expression, unable to understand what there was to argue about.
Just then, Lu Wei snapped out of her daze, her confused eyes shifting among the group before finally settling on Chen Yushu’s face.
Chen Yushu asked, “What’s wrong with you?”
Still not fully detached from the tragic drama she had concocted in her mind, Lu Wei’s panic and grievances surged to her eyes at Chen Yushu’s question. Her eyes instantly welled up, making her look utterly pitiful.
“You don’t want me anymore.”
