How I Accidentally Bent My Best Friend - Chapter 68
Chen Yushu looked up and saw that Lu Wei was already seated, leaning over the back of her chair, gazing at her with sparkling eyes and beckoning her with a silent mouthing of, “Come here.”
Her heart skipped a beat, and an inexplicable sensation washed over her, as if every cell in her body trembled in response.
Sitting back down, Chen Yushu’s heartbeat grew faster and faster. In the silence of the library, the sound seemed overwhelmingly loud, almost audacious.
Lu Wei propped her chin on her hand, staring directly at her, scrutinizing her without restraint.
It seemed she wasn’t as indifferent as she’d imagined.
Feeling Lu Wei’s gaze as if it had turned into a tangible heat enveloping her, Chen Yushu grew restless. The words in her book passed before her eyes but refused to register in her mind. She read the same paragraph over and over again.
Unable to bear it any longer, she furrowed her brows and shot a fierce glare at the person beside her, signaling her to focus on studying.
The moment their eyes met, Lu Wei’s smile deepened, bright and unmistakable.
Seeing Lu Wei sit up straight, Chen Yushu relaxed abruptly, finally able to concentrate on her studies.
However, it wasn’t long before she felt the person next to her sneak a few glances at her and then poke her arm.
Chen Yushu silently moved her hand away, ignoring her. Lu Wei pouted unhappily and intensified her efforts, her fingers creeping like little figures up Chen Yushu’s arm and slowly climbing to her shoulder.
A tingling sensation shot through her nerve endings, making it impossible to ignore. Unable to endure the disturbance, Chen Yushu snatched a notebook and wrote: If you keep bothering me, study on your own tomorrow!
Lu Wei immediately looked aggrieved and drew a crying face next to the message.
Chen Yushu turned her head, giving her a once-over, and whispered, “What do you want?”
Lu Wei huffed and turned away, pulling out a CET-6 test paper and circling a word.
“You should’ve said so earlier,” Chen Yushu muttered softly.
“Who told you to ignore me!” Lu Wei scrawled a line of text at the top of the test paper, dripping with resentment.
Chen Yushu rubbed the tip of her nose and wrote the meaning of the word next to it. “Can’t you look it up yourself if you don’t know it?”
Lu Wei: Who was it that locked my phone as soon as we got here?!
Chen Yushu’s pen paused, a hint of guilt flashing across her face, but the words she wrote remained domineering: Whose fault is it that you lack self-control?
“Such sophistry!” Lu Wei gritted her teeth and wrote back.
One sentence after another, the test paper was soon used as scratch paper. Before long, Chen Yushu ran out of space to write and flipped to the previous page.
Just as she was about to write, she noticed a cute chibi character in the lower right corner of the page. Upon closer inspection, it looked just like her.
Admittedly, it was quite lifelike.
A faint smile tugged at Chen Yushu’s lips, but her attention was immediately drawn to the small text beside it. She leaned in, deciphering the words one by one, silently reading them in her mind Little girl, I’ve taken a liking to you. If you know what’s good for you, surrender sooner rather than later, got it?
Seeing Chen Yushu hesitate to write back, Lu Wei shook her head triumphantly, thinking, Hmph, speechless now, aren’t you? Hurry up and apologize to me!
However, the next second, she saw Chen Yushu clench her fist, and the test paper crumpled under the strain.
Violence! Such sheer violence!
You can’t win the argument, so you take it out on my test paper!
Lu Wei put her hands on her hips, ready to confront Chen Yushu, only to see her suddenly lift her head, eyes wide and blazing with fury.
Why did it feel like things weren’t that simple? Memories suddenly flooded back, and Lu Wei’s heart skipped a beat. She hurriedly leaned over to take a look, and what she saw made her face instantly pale. Trying to retrieve the test paper was clearly too late.
When mealtime arrived, the library gradually emptied out, becoming much quieter.
Chen Yushu unclenched her fist and slowly smoothed out the creases on the test paper, tapping meaningfully at the bottom right corner. “Let’s go eat.”
“I’m not hungry yet. I want to study a bit longer,” Lu Wei said, pulling the test paper on the table toward herself as she spoke.
Chen Yushu pressed it down firmly. “Hurry up!”
“Fine, we’ll eat. Why so fierce?” Lu Wei stole a glance at the drawing on the test paper and replied guiltily.
As soon as they stepped out of the library, Chen Yushu abruptly halted, startling the already nervous Lu Wei. “I just remembered I left something behind.” she said, turning to flee.
But Chen Yushu was faster. She grabbed Lu Wei’s clothes and dragged her back. “First, tell me, what is this?”
“What? Why are you still holding onto it while we eat?” Lu Wei reached out, trying to snatch the test paper back. “I haven’t finished it yet.”
“You haven’t finished it, but you had time to draw on it? What does this mean?”
Lu Wei withdrew her hand sheepishly and began playing dumb. “What are you talking about?”
Chen Yushu gritted her teeth and shook the paper. “Little girl, I’ve got my eye on you. If you know what’s good for you, then.”
“Ahhh!” Lu Wei couldn’t take it anymore. She covered her ears and crouched down. “Stop reading it, stop! Please don’t read it out loud!”
Chen Yushu nearly burst out laughing but bit her lip to hold it in. After a moment, she said, “Now you’re embarrassed? Not going to keep pretending?”
“Chen Yushu, how can you say that out in public?” Lu Wei tugged at her pant leg and whined.
“You had the nerve to write it, so why shouldn’t I have the nerve to read it?” Chen Yushu retorted. “Now explain, what does this mean?”
“Well.” Lu Wei swallowed and slowly stood up, her mind racing. “Let me explain.”
“Hmph.” Chen Yushu raised her chin, curious to see what excuse she could come up with.
Lu Wei cleared her throat, inexplicably nervous. She opened her mouth but couldn’t get a word out for a long time.
Chen Yushu gradually lost patience and wrapped an arm around Lu Wei’s neck from behind. “Little girl? Who are you calling ‘little girl’?”
“Can’t you tell?” Lu Wei straightened her neck and said defiantly, “You, of course.”
“You!” Caught off guard by her quick admission, Chen Yushu was momentarily speechless.
“You already figured it out, didn’t you? Don’t you know what it means?”
“I, you!” Chen Yushu’s language system short-circuited, leaving her unable to form a coherent sentence.
Lu Wei smirked triumphantly, broke free from Chen Yushu’s hold, and swaggered forward like a victor.
Chen Yushu watched her retreating figure, growing angrier by the second. “Stop right there!”
Stop? Fine. Lu Wei stopped immediately, completely unfazed.
“Say it again if you dare!” Chen Yushu stormed over, hitting her repeatedly. “Think you’re something, huh? You’re the ‘big sister’ now? How impressive! And you want me to know my place? Do I look like I know my place right now?”
“Talk if you want, but why resort to violence?” Lu Wei hunched her shoulders, dodging Chen Yushu’s hands.
“Don’t try to change the subject!”
Lu Wei grabbed Chen Yushu’s arm and, for some reason, her mind went blank as she blurted out defiantly, “That’s right, I’ve taken a liking to you so what?”
Chen Yushu opened her mouth to retort, but only belatedly processed what Lu Wei had just said. Her thoughts stalled, and a flicker of astonishment surfaced in her eyes.
The summer heat surged in, quickly dissipating the coolness of the air-conditioned room. The warmth in her palm grew even more intense, pressed against Chen Yushu’s arm, scorching hot.
Chen Yushu broke into a sweat almost instantly. She turned her head away awkwardly, not daring to look at the expression on Lu Wei’s face.
The air fell into silence, the sweltering currents seeming to crackle with faint sounds beside their ears. Only then did Lu Wei snap back to reality. She held her breath unconsciously, nervously observing the emotions playing across Chen Yushu’s face.
The atmosphere grew increasingly tense and strange. Chen Yushu lowered her head to stare at the ground, her cheeks burning hotter by the second.
“You, why aren’t you saying anything?” Lu Wei asked slowly, testing the waters. “If you didn’t hear me clearly, I can say it again?”
Chen Yushu lifted her head dazedly. “What?”
“I said,” Lu Wei tilted her head, took a deep breath, and spoke with a bit of a swagger, “I’ve taken a liking to you, what about it?”
“You.” Chen Yushu’s pupils contracted slightly. After a long pause, she suddenly blurted out, “Are you out of your mind?!”
What kind of reaction was that? Lu Wei was stunned for a second, then gritted her teeth inwardly, thinking, After all the mental preparation I went through, ahhh, Chen Yushu! You blockhead!
“I’ve never seen anyone as annoying as you.” Chen Yushu lowered her head slightly, pulled her hand back, shoved the test paper into Lu Wei’s hands, and then quickly turned and walked away.
A red mark remained on her arm, still radiating heat. Chen Yushu couldn’t help but rub the spot, quickening her pace.
Lu Wei glanced back and forth between the drawing on the test paper and Chen Yushu’s retreating figure, sighing in frustration. Even after all that, it still didn’t work!
Chen Yushu, is your heart made of stone?
Lu Wei was filled with resentment, staring gloomily ahead as Chen Yushu walked on without pause, her back straight, showing no intention of looking back.
Wait! Something seemed off. Lu Wei blinked, her eyes fixed intently on Chen Yushu’s every move. Then, her eyes lit up, and she slowly broke into a grin.
Unconsciously, the distance between them had widened. Lu Wei caught up, panting from the heat. “Walking so fast couldn’t you wait for me?”
Chen Yushu hadn’t yet recovered from her earlier fluster. Hearing this, she remained silent for a moment, pursing her lips uneasily.
“Why are you so spaced out? Did the sun fry your brain?” Lu Wei waved a hand in front of her face.
Chen Yushu mumbled an affirmative, then brushed her hair and touched her cheek, unconsciously betraying her inner unease. “It’s already this late, why is the sun still so strong?”
Lu Wei watched the subtle shifts in Chen Yushu’s expression with keen interest, secretly chuckling to herself. She should have noticed it sooner.
Cafeteria.
“What’s wrong with you now?” Chen Yushu felt unnerved under Lu Wei’s intense gaze. “Why are you staring at me? Is there food on my face? Stop looking!”
Lu Wei poked at the rice in her bowl and shook her head.
Just then, Chen Yushu’s phone rang. It was Chen Sinan calling to ask about her holiday schedule and plans. She replied while eating.
Chen Sinan: “We happen to have a performance in mid-July. Want to come watch? You can stay and hang out for a few days too, how about it?”
Hearing this, Chen Yushu hesitated for a moment. “Let me think,” she said, instinctively glancing up at the person across from her.
“What’s there to think about?” Chen Sinan chuckled. “Are you wondering if Lu Wei is going?”
With her thoughts exposed, Chen Yushu’s face instantly flushed. She let out a soft “Mm” and immediately tried to justify herself. “It’s mainly because it’s more convenient when two people go together.”
“So, even going to the same university was that for convenience too?” Chen Sinan teased.
Whether it was her own guilty conscience or not, she felt there was an underlying meaning in Chen Sinan’s words, as if he had seen right through her.
“Mm,” Chen Yushu’s voice tightened slightly, and she unconsciously pressed her phone closer to her ear. “After all, the university is quite far from home. Being alone.”
Chen Sinan cut in, “Alright, hurry up and ask.”
“Okay.” Chen Yushu looked up, about to ask Lu Wei, when she suddenly noticed a grain of rice stuck to Lu Wei’s face.
Noticing her gaze, Lu Wei asked, “What’s wrong?”
Chen Yushu pointed to her own cheek, indicating that there was something on Lu Wei’s face.
Lu Wei tilted her head, blinking in confusion.
“You dummy, there’s something on your.” Chen Yushu frowned helplessly, having to speak up to remind her.
Before she could finish, Lu Wei suddenly stood up, leaned in, and kissed her on the cheek.
