How I Accidentally Bent My Best Friend - Chapter 60.2
Lu Wei was on the verge of tears, blinking pitifully as she stubbornly retorted, “But you were the one at fault first! You ran off with someone else and left me behind, and I’m not even allowed to say anything?”
“What’s our relationship? Why should I have to tell you?” The moment the words left her lips, Chen Yushu felt the question was a bit too sensitive and grew uncomfortable. Hurriedly changing the subject, she asked, “Do you want to go or not?”
Lu Wei pouted resentfully and mumbled, “Well, do you want me to go or not?”
“I couldn’t care less.” Chen Yushu released her and took out her phone. “I’ll delete your name. If you want to go, fill it in yourself.”
“Chen Yushu.” Lu Wei grabbed her arm, calling her name softly, her voice dripping with grievance. “You’re doing this on purpose.”
“Hmm?” Chen Yushu pretended not to understand, feigning ignorance. “What’s wrong?”
Lu Wei shot her an annoyed look and muttered under her breath, “You’re so mean. I don’t like you anymore.”
Seeing her puffed-up cheeks, Chen Yushu’s heart softened, and she couldn’t resist poking them. “What are you mumbling about?”
“Why should I have to tell you?” Lu Wei turned away sulkily, avoiding Chen Yushu’s touch. Chen Yushu’s smile became more apparent as she reached out to gently touch Lu Wei’s earlobe, teasingly calling her a child. “Alright, fine. I’m begging you, come with me.”
“Ahem.” Lu Wei cleared her throat, her anger dissipating instantly. Suppressing the urge to smile, she tried to maintain a semblance of dignity and mumbled, “You don’t have to beg. If you’d just said so, I would’ve followed you anyway.”
Hearing this, Chen Yushu felt a stir of emotion and suppressed the flutter in her heart. “Are you a dog? Following me everywhere.”
Lu Wei couldn’t keep up the act for long, happily shaking her head and sticking out her tongue, deliberately barking, “Woof, woof”
“You’re really.”
At 9:30 on Saturday morning, all the volunteers had gathered at the school gate. After roll call, they boarded the bus one by one.
The bus seats were assigned according to the order of registration. Lu Wei stood at the back, glaring darkly at the two figures in front of her. Lingering until the last moment, she couldn’t hold back and complained to Jiang Yunxi, “Just look at them!”
Jiang Yunxi shrugged helplessly. “What can I do?”
The two boarded the bus one after the other and took their seats in the last row.
Chen Yushu sat diagonally in front of Lu Wei, giving Lu Wei a clear view of her every move.
The bus slowly started and swayed its way toward their destination.
“How have things been between you two lately?” Jiang Yunxi asked casually.
Lu Wei shifted her gaze from Chen Yushu, furrowing her brows in thought. “There’s been a bit of progress. I haven’t made her angry much recently.”
“What?” Jiang Yunxi gave her a surprised look, at a loss for words. “Well, I suppose that counts as progress.”
“You think so too?” Lu Wei perked up, delighted, but the next moment she sighed with worry. “But since I haven’t been making her angry, why hasn’t she.”
Just then, the bus took a sharp turn, and everyone inside swayed with the motion.
Chen Yushu, who was already prone to motion sickness, had just gotten used to the smell inside the bus. The sudden movement made her stomach churn violently. She leaned back in her seat, closing her eyes in discomfort.
“Are you feeling unwell?” Jiang Yuran quickly noticed and asked with concern.
Chen Yushu shook her head. “It’s nothing, just a bit carsick.”
The bus sped up and slowed down intermittently, occasionally jolting to an abrupt stop. Waves of nausea surged relentlessly, and Chen Yushu’s lips lost their color, her complexion growing increasingly pallid.
Suddenly, someone brushed against her hand. Chen Yushu opened her eyes to find Lu Wei crouched beside her seat.
Startled by the coldness of Chen Yushu’s hand, Lu Wei quickly pulled an orange from her bag, tore off a small piece of peel, and held it under Chen Yushu’s nose. “Feeling better?”
“Mm.” Chen Yushu took a deep breath, the refreshing citrus scent instantly filling her nostrils and easing her discomfort. “Give it to me. You should go back to your seat.”
Lu Wei remained crouched, peeling the orange while chattering away, “Serves you right for running off with someone else. Now that you’re feeling awful, you still have to rely on me. See how good I am to you? I’ll forgive you this time, but next time, you better not”
“Could you just shut up?” Chen Yushu, already miserable, felt her head spin from the incessant chatter. Weakly, she muttered, “Give me the orange and get back to your seat.”
“Is this how you ” Lu Wei started to protest but stopped short when she noticed Chen Yushu’s lips turning even paler. Hastily, she broke off a segment of the orange and fed it to Chen Yushu. “Hang in there a little longer. We’ll be there soon.”
Beside them, Jiang Yuran couldn’t bear to watch and turned to gaze out the window. Finally, unable to take it any longer, she said, “I’ll move to the back. You stay here and take care of Shushu.”
“Gladly!” Lu Wei seized the opportunity. As soon as Jiang Yuran left, she promptly took the vacant seat and grinned cheerfully at Chen Yushu. “Now it’s just the two of us.”
“A cuckoo occupying a magpie’s nest,” Chen Yushu remarked flatly, turning her head away. “Fasten your seatbelt.”
“Oh, right.” Lu Wei lowered her head to buckle up, then reached out and pulled Chen Yushu close, letting her lean against her shoulder.
Just then, the bus lurched to another sudden stop. The two were thrown forward before being flung back into their seats. Lu Wei tightened her embrace, cushioning the impact slightly.
Others on the bus were equally miserable, some even retching dryly.
Chen Yushu’s brow furrowed tightly, and she instinctively gripped Lu Wei’s hand.
Lu Wei glanced down at their intertwined hands, her heart skipping a beat, and slowly tightened her grasp.
After steadying her breathing, Lu Wei noticed another traffic light ahead and called out, “Driver, could you drive a bit more steadily, please?”
The driver chuckled sheepishly. “Alright, alright. I thought you were in a hurry.”
Other students chimed in, “No rush, no rush! Take your time, driver!”
Hearing this, Chen Yushu opened her eyes and found Lu Wei’s face close to hers. The next moment, Lu Wei withdrew her gaze and turned to look at her.
Chen Yushu’s heart leaped, and she quickly shut her eyes. Deprived of sight, her other senses sharpened. She felt a breath brush against her face, drawing nearer and nearer.
Though she couldn’t see anything, she inexplicably sensed that gaze growing more intense, almost tangible, as if it could burn her to ashes.
Suddenly, Lu Wei slowly withdrew her hand.
What was she doing?
Soon, Chen Yushu got her answer. The strands of hair on her forehead were gently tucked behind her ear, but Lu Wei’s hand lingered, lightly tracing the curve of her ear as if reluctant to let go.
Instantly, Chen Yushu’s breath hitched. The spot Lu Wei had touched felt as if it were on fire.
Such an act carried an intimacy that went beyond friendship.
The air around them grew thick and heavy. Chen Yushu’s hands slowly clenched, her body stiffening, not daring to move an inch.
Taking advantage of Chen Yushu’s inability to see her, Lu Wei’s gaze grew increasingly bold, sweeping over her inch by inch with an aggressive intensity, like a triumphant warrior surveying her own territory.
Soon after, the bus ride smoothed out considerably. Chen Yushu’s brows and eyes gradually relaxed, yet she felt extremely uncomfortable all over.
“Finally, it’s not so bumpy anymore. I almost threw up my stomach acid earlier. Thankfully, Lu Wei.”
“Me too, don’t even mention it. Another day of envying other people’s partners.”
“Exactly! So considerate, gentle, and caring, and romantic too. Unlike my ex-boyfriend, who was completely useless. Good thing I broke up with him!”
The intermittent chatter reached their ears. Hearing her own name, Lu Wei’s attention was drawn, and upon realizing they were saying things she loved to hear, she couldn’t help but shake her head proudly, wanting Chen Yushu to hear it too.
Unable to resist, she leaned in close and whispered breathily into Chen Yushu’s ear, “Chen Yushu, did you hear that?”
The warm breath and the soft lips that inadvertently brushed against her ear sent the heat rushing back instantly. Chen Yushu gritted her teeth secretly, struggling to regulate her breathing, afraid that Lu Wei might notice something unusual.
Has she fallen asleep? Lu Wei scratched the back of her neck in frustration, wishing she could record those words and play them by Chen Yushu’s ear every day to brainwash her!
Half an hour later, the bus arrived at the nursing home.
Chen Yushu’s motion sickness hadn’t fully subsided yet. The moment she stepped off the bus, her legs went weak, and a strong wave of nausea surged from her chest. She quickly covered her mouth, suppressing the urge to vomit, but couldn’t stop herself from dry heaving.
Seeing this, Lu Wei hurriedly supported her and pulled a plastic bag from her backpack. “If you need to throw up, just do it. You’ll feel better afterward.”
“It’s fine, I’m feeling a bit better now,” Chen Yushu said after catching her breath. “Let’s go.”
“Mm.” Lu Wei took out a thermos from her bag, unscrewed the lid, and handed it to her. “It’s warm.”
Chen Yushu took a sip and noticed Lu Wei lowering her head again to rummage through her bag. She couldn’t help but glance over. “Just how much stuff do you have in there?”
“There’s still a bread roll, a pack of candy, some chips, band-aids ” Lu Wei counted as she searched.
Chen Yushu’s gaze shifted to Lu Wei herself. Today, Lu Wei was wearing denim overalls with a T-shirt inside featuring a cartoon duck, a cream-colored jacket, and a crossbody bag. Her hair was tied into two fluffy buns, making her look undeniably cute.
“Alright, that’s all. It’s not really that much, right?” Lu Wei patted her noticeably bulging bag.
“Not much?” Chen Yushu said helplessly. “You’re here as a volunteer, not for a spring outing, little kid.”
Lu Wei pouted in protest. “But you have to take care of yourself first, so you can help others better!”
She really is a bit cute. Chen Yushu’s attention was almost entirely focused on Lu Wei, stealing glance after glance. Her hands itched with the urge to just hug her and give her a good squeeze, maybe even a kiss…
Startled by her own wild thoughts, Chen Yushu guiltily averted her eyes, silently reciting vocabulary from her notebook while quickening her pace.
“Wait for me! My bag is a bit heavy, I can’t walk fast.”
Chen Yushu stopped and turned around, watching as Lu Wei clumsily ran toward her. Those wild thoughts resurfaced once again.
