How I Accidentally Bent My Best Friend - Chapter 60.1
“I’m the one asking you. You answer first.”
“Haven’t I said it many times already?” Chen Yushu turned her head to look at her, a deliberately restrained calmness in her eyes. “But you keep bringing this up. Is it because you want to talk about it?”
Lu Wei pressed her lips together, not wanting to argue. Facing Chen Yushu, her gaze was somewhat evasive, but in her heart, she couldn’t help but scream, Yes, yes! I do want to date you!
For a moment, she felt utterly stifled, regretting why she had ever agreed with Chen Yushu not to pursue a relationship. Now, Chen Yushu had cut off all emotions and love, and her own chance was completely ruined!
Seeing this, Chen Yushu’s heart tightened. Connecting it with Lu Wei’s recent behavior, she already had an answer. “Mm, I understand.”
“Wait, it’s not entirely that.” After a long pause, Lu Wei managed to squeeze out these words. “It’s just that sometimes I think about it, and sometimes I don’t.”
Chen Yushu watched her expression closely and gradually detected a hint of strangeness in it. “What do you mean?”
Every nerve in her body instantly tightened like a drawn bowstring. Meeting Chen Yushu’s gaze, Lu Wei immediately averted her eyes and blurted out in a fluster, “Ah, forget it, I was just talking nonsense. Curfew is almost here, let’s hurry up and go.”
“Oh, so now you don’t want to talk about it anymore?” Chen Yushu raised an eyebrow slightly and turned to walk ahead.
I do! I do! Who said I don’t want to? I want to talk about it! Then why don’t you talk to me about it?
Lu Wei stared at Chen Yushu’s retreating back, stamping her feet in frustration and silently roaring in helpless fury.
Back in the dorm, Chen Yushu, filled with confusion, couldn’t sleep.
Her mind wandered aimlessly through many past events. Once again touching on the sensitive topic of love, she somehow felt that Lu Wei was different from before.
The way she looked at her with unspoken words, the occasionally evasive and guilty glances, and the probing yet casual tone, all were completely unlike the person who used to openly talk about finding a fake boyfriend.
All the recent events began to swirl in her mind, steering toward a bizarre direction.
Chen Yushu quickly stopped herself, patted her cheeks, and extinguished such far-fetched fantasies.
But the next second, she couldn’t help but release the vague, immense hope of “what if,” indulging in that fleeting, weightless feeling as if floating on clouds.
Yet, soon enough, that illusory sensation plummeted on its own, crashing to the ground, leaving her to wallow in frustration. Clearly, this was something even imagining felt unbelievable.
Chen Yushu frowned irritably, turned over, and hugged her blanket tightly, telling herself to stop overthinking.
But her nerves felt as if injected with some kind of stimulant, remaining constantly active with thoughts of Lu Wei, making the memories even more vivid and lively, like slow-motion scenes in a movie.
Unconsciously, she collected numerous tiny pieces of evidence, adding a touch of reality to her speculations. Then, timidly, the thought emerged again: What if?
But Lu Wei had never been one to beat around the bush. If she really liked someone, she would have said it long ago.
A dull ache tightened in Chen Yushu’s chest. Maybe she was just reading too much into it.
But,
Back and forth.
Annoying! Chen Yushu had completely lost any desire to sleep. She opened her phone, looked at the chat interface with Lu Wei, and couldn’t help but poke her avatar angrily. What exactly do you want?
Naturally, no one responded. Chen Yushu sighed. Fine, let’s take it one step at a time.
Besides, she could always ask Jiang Yuran. Jiang Yuran would probably understand.
“You’re right, that does seem a bit unusual.” Jiang Yuran frowned, rubbing her chin thoughtfully. “But why exactly?”
“Didn’t you say.” Chen Yushu hesitated for a moment before asking, “that you’re quite experienced?”
Jiang Yuran choked on her words. “Your situation is beyond my experience.”
“Then what should I do?” Chen Yushu asked helplessly.
“Forget it, straight girls’ thoughts are impossible to guess.” Jiang Yuran sighed and thought for a moment. “Let’s just wait and see for now.”
Great, asked for nothing.
“Hey, what’s with that expression?” Jiang Yuran grabbed her elbow and lowered her voice. “Who knows better, you or me?”
“You?” Chen Yushu didn’t hide her skepticism. “If you know so much, why haven’t you come up with any analysis?”
Jiang Yuran put her hands on her hips. “How can I just analyze randomly? You have to analyze based on the specific situation, got it? I wasn’t even there. You said she was looking at you with affection, what if her eye just twitched?”
“When did I say she was looking at me with affection!” Chen Yushu frantically covered Jiang Yuran’s mouth, exasperated.
“Mmph let go.” Jiang Yuran broke free but still defended herself. “Anyway, the meaning is pretty much the same.”
Chen Yushu gave her a helpless look and deliberately sighed dramatically. “Seems like experience isn’t all that useful. Otherwise, you and Senior Jiang wouldn’t still be stuck without any progress.”
“What did you say?” Jiang Yuran looked at her in shock and distress. “Oh, you, Chen Yushu! I’d take a knife for you, and here you are, stabbing me in the back!”
“Haha, just kidding.”
Just then, the phone on the table buzzed with a new message. Chen Yushu glanced at it unintentionally and quickly looked away, saying to Jiang Yuran, “Look, your Senior Jiang is looking for you.”
Jiang Yuran paused for a moment before picking up her phone with feigned nonchalance. “She’s not looking for me. It’s a message in the group chat, saying there’s a volunteer event this Saturday at the nursing home… I heard the Youth Association organizes these periodically.”
Hearing this, Chen Yushu leaned in to take a look. “Is this last year’s photo? Seems quite meaningful.”
“Yeah.” Jiang Yuran nodded. “Do we have an experiment on Saturday?”
“We do, but this experiment is long and will take two days to complete,” Chen Yushu said. “Our turn isn’t on Saturday.”
Jiang Yuran immediately exclaimed, “Great! I’m signing up then.”
“Okay, put my name down too.”
“Alright, what about Lu Wei? Is she going?”
Chen Yushu froze for a moment, then pouted. “Why should I care if she goes or not?”
“Really?” Jiang Yuran gave her an amused look. “Don’t blame me for not reminding you spots are limited.”
Chen Yushu shrugged indifferently. Hanging out together every day, what kind of look is that?
Not long after, the phone buzzed again, one message after another popping up. Coincidentally, it was from the very person they had just been discussing.
Chen Yushu opened the photo Lu Wei had sent it was the sign-up form she and Jiang Yuran had filled out. Before Lu Wei could even question her, Chen Yushu already felt a bit guilty.
Lu Wei: 【What is this?】
Lu Wei: 【Are you running off with her?】
Lu Wei: 【Why didn’t you invite me?】
Lu Wei: 【Do you even care about me anymore?】
“So noisy!” Chen Yushu frowned in annoyance. 【I forgot to mention it.】
When Lu Wei saw this message, she was so furious she felt her lungs would explode. How could he forget something like this? Was she someone so easily forgotten?
How infuriating! Lu Wei took a deep breath, a wave of grievance washing over her. She quickly sniffled, biting her slightly trembling lips, and typed angrily: [I’m asking you now, so why aren’t you asking if I want to go or not!]
Chen Yushu rolled his eyes without restraint. She’s insane.
Lu Wei: [Wow, I’ve made it so clear, and you still won’t say anything. Do you have some kind of problem with me?]
For some reason, Chen Yushu immediately thought of an idiom unreasonable and making a fuss!
Lu Wei: [Still not saying anything? Chen Yushu, what exactly do you mean by this!]
So annoying! Chen Yushu gritted his teeth. [If you keep nagging like this, the spot will be gone soon.]
Lu Wei: [Hah, I get it. You just don’t want me to go with you.]
Chen Yushu looked at Lu Wei’s profile picture with a forced, insincere smile. He really wanted to punch her!
After holding back again and again, Chen Yushu didn’t reply. Instead, he went straight to the group chat, filled in her name, took a screenshot, and sent it to her. [Is this okay now?]
Lu Wei opened the image and examined it with an air of haughtiness. “Hmph.”
Thinking the matter was finally over, Chen Yushu was about to breathe a sigh of relief when he saw Lu Wei start nagging again.
Lu Wei: [Why did you put my name down? Who said I wanted to go!]
Chen Yushu’s fists clenched instantly. Suppressing his temper, he replied: [Fine, then I’ll remove your name.]
Lu Wei: [Wait! I never said I wasn’t going either. You just don’t want me to go I can tell!]
Enough was enough. Chen Yushu turned off his phone abruptly, stood up, and strode out of the dormitory.
“What are you doing? Evening self-study is about to start,” Jiang Yuran exclaimed in surprise.
Chen Yushu suppressed his anger. “I have something to take care of. I’ll be back soon.”
Hah, he’s feeling guilty because I called him out! Lu Wei stared at the unresponsive chat interface, her resentment growing deeper. Just then, Chen Yushu’s call came through.
Watching the name flash on the screen, Lu Wei was startled, her heart leaping into her throat. What does Chen Yushu want?
Trembling, she answered the call. Chen Yushu’s voice came through the receiver immediately: “Come down.”
“Huh?”
“Come down. Now.” Chen Yushu repeated succinctly before hanging up.
Wait, is Chen Yushu serious? Lu Wei nervously clutched her phone, stood up, and went to the balcony to look down. When she spotted Chen Yushu’s figure, only one thought crossed her mind: I’m doomed.
A few minutes later, Lu Wei slowly emerged from the dormitory building. Seeing Chen Yushu’s unfriendly expression, she swallowed nervously, gripping the strap of her crossbody bag as her steps grew smaller and smaller.
Chen Yushu stood still, arms crossed, watching her calmly.
“Wh-why did you call me down?” Lu Wei asked weakly, fiddling with her bag.
“Weren’t you so fierce on the phone just now?” Chen Yushu took several large steps forward. Startled, Lu Wei instinctively took a small step back.
Seeing this, Chen Yushu suppressed a laugh that was about to escape his lips. He grabbed the strap of Lu Wei’s bag and pulled her closer.
“We’re still outside, Can’t we talk about this somewhere else” Lu Wei wrapped her hands around Chen Yushu’s arm, pleading softly.
“Afraid of losing face?” Chen Yushu chuckled. “Weren’t you acting all tough earlier?”
