How I Accidentally Bent My Best Friend - Chapter 61
After entering the nursing home, they took a brief tour and warmly greeted the elderly residents. The morning activities soon began.
This nursing home was the largest in Yuncheng, boasting a beautiful environment and a pleasant living atmosphere.
However, no matter how good the conditions were, they couldn’t ease the loneliness of the elderly, making companionship all the more important.
The first activity was flower arranging. Everyone sat around a long wooden table adorned with a variety of flowers and plants, which brought joy just by looking at them.
Chen Yushu trimmed flower stems while chatting with an elderly woman, but she wasn’t very skilled at it and remained somewhat reserved.
Across from her, Lu Wei was the complete opposite interacting with the elderly woman much more casually. Yet, it couldn’t be described as a cheerful conversation; it was more like a clash of stubborn personalities.
Lu Wei: “Granny, I already told you, don’t hold the scissors like that.”
“I’ll use them however I want,” the elderly woman retorted, clenching her fist and waving it in a show of defiance.
“You little granny, quite the temper you’ve got,” Lu Wei said. “If you get hurt, don’t come crying to me.”
“Lu Wei,” Chen Yushu called softly, signaling her to be more polite.
The elderly woman beside her chuckled and tugged at her sleeve. “Haha, it’s fine. She actually enjoys bickering with someone. Ever since she was young.”
Chen Yushu listened quietly and couldn’t help but sigh. “It’s wonderful that you’re still together.”
“Mm,” the elderly woman replied with a smile, lowering her head as she placed a flower into the vase. “Yes, it is.”
Chen Yushu glanced sideways, moved by the happiness in the woman’s eyes, and couldn’t help but imagine her own future old age with Lu Wei.
Would they still be together then?
Just then, the two across the table started arguing again.
“Don’t you touch it!” the elderly woman blocked Lu Wei’s hand. “I’ll do it myself.”
“Do it yourself? There are thorns on it. With your clumsy hands, don’t come crying to me if you get pricked,” Lu Wei retorted bluntly.
The elderly woman stubbornly reached for the flower, unwilling to back down. “How could I possibly get pricked? Do I look like a pig?” The next second, she hissed in pain and quickly retracted her hand.
“Hahaha.” Lu Wei burst into laughter. “See? You totally deserved that.”
Chen Yushu shook her head helplessly and murmured under her breath, “They’re like two little kids.”
The elderly woman beside her also watched the pair with a smile. At some point, she had removed the thorns from a rose and handed it over. “Here, take it. No thorns now.”
The elderly woman stared at it for a moment, snorted, and turned her head away with a pout.
“Still angry?” the elderly woman sighed. “The doctor told you to cut back on sugar. Last time, your blood pressure You never listen.”
“She’s absolutely right to scold you!” Lu Wei chimed in from the side.
Caught between them, the elderly woman huffed and slapped her own thigh. “You, go over there. Let that young lady come keep me company.”
“No way,” Lu Wei said, glancing at Chen Yushu. “I’ve got thick skin you can scold me all you want. I won’t let her take your abuse.”
“Why would I scold her?” the elderly woman retorted. “She’s not like you, always chattering away and being annoying.”
“Lu Wei, why don’t you come over here?” Chen Yushu suggested with a helpless laugh.
Lu Wei shook her head.
“Never mind them,” the elderly woman said. “Keep arranging the flowers. I’m going to the restroom.”
“Alright,” Chen Yushu replied, helping the woman to her feet. “Let me walk you there.”
Grandma stood by the table, glanced at the old lady, then pushed the flowers toward her. “No need, you sit. I’ll go myself.”
After Grandma had walked away, the old lady withdrew her gaze and noticed Lu Wei arranging flowers. She immediately tapped Lu Wei’s hand lightly. “Not this one.” Then, pretending to be casual, she picked up a thornless rose from the table and placed it in the vase.
A moment later, the old lady frowned, took the flower out again, and tucked it into her shirt pocket.
“Tsk, tsk, tsk, such a proud little old lady,” Lu Wei said, resting her chin in her hands. “Seriously, Grandma is trying to make peace. Why are you still being stubborn?”
“None of your business!”
“So fierce! Aren’t you afraid Grandma won’t want you anymore if you’re this fierce?”
“What do you know?” the old lady said indignantly, her lips trembling slightly as if holding back endless grievances. “I only ate one tiny piece of candy, and she still scolded me for it. She took it away and even yelled at me.”
Hearing this, Lu Wei laughed without restraint. “Isn’t that exactly what she should do?”
Just then, Grandma returned. Seeing her, Lu Wei suddenly stood up, helped Grandma sit in her own seat, then walked around to the other side and sat down next to Chen Yushu.
“What are you doing?” Chen Yushu asked, puzzled.
“Can’t you see the old couple is having a tiff?” Lu Wei tilted her chin, signaling. “Just helping them reconcile.”
Chen Yushu looked over and saw the old lady hurriedly take the flower out of her pocket and gently place it on the table. Grandma didn’t get angry but picked it up again, trimmed the stem, and carefully tucked it back into the old lady’s pocket.
Suddenly, Chen Yushu felt Lu Wei tug at the front of her clothes. She looked down and saw a lily blooming right before her eyes.
Lu Wei gave her an appraising look and nodded in satisfaction.
“What are you doing?” Chen Yushu instinctively reached to remove it, but Lu Wei exclaimed loudly, “What? You think it’s tacky?”
The old lady immediately turned to look.
“I, ” Chen Yushu stared at her in confusion. “When did I say that?!”
“Heh, then don’t mess with it.”
Chen Yushu’s hand froze mid-air. Under the old lady’s gaze, she reluctantly lowered her hand after a moment, saying awkwardly, “It looks nice.”
Hearing this, Lu Wei smirked triumphantly, only to suffer a swift, stealthy pinch from Chen Yushu under the table.
Chen Yushu whispered, “Serves you right.”
The morning passed quickly. After lunch, the elderly rested for a while, and during that time, the volunteers prepared some snacks.
By three in the afternoon, everyone had gathered in the auditorium. One entertaining performance after another had the elderly laughing nonstop.
Lu Wei sat in the audience, watching the stage while eating a small cake from her plate.
Suddenly, she felt someone tug at her sleeve.
“Share some with me,” the old lady whispered, glancing sideways at Grandma and pushing her plate toward Lu Wei, frantically signaling.
Seeing this, Lu Wei quickly moved her plate farther away, keeping her eyes fixed on the stage, pretending not to see or hear.
When she got no response, the old lady tugged her sleeve again.
“This is my cake. I can’t give it to you,” Lu Wei said helplessly, deciding to be direct.
“Next up, we have a song for everyone. Just a moment I’d like to find a student to sing a duet with me,” the person on stage said, coming down with a microphone and handing one to Chen Yushu. “Would that be okay?”
Chen Yushu froze for a second, then quickly waved her hands in refusal. “No, I can’t. I’m tone-deaf. You should ask someone else.”
Hearing the voice, Lu Wei abruptly turned her head, her eyes filled with vigilance as she looked at the boy.
“It’s fine,” the boy said the same senior who had nominated Chen Yushu for the class committee position during registration. “It’s not a professional competition anyway. Come on.”
“I really can’t,” Chen Yushu frowned, gritted her teeth, and replied in a low, restrained voice. “Ask someone else.”
“Don’t be shy,” the boy insisted, shoving a microphone into her hand and giving her an encouraging smile.
What’s there to smile about? Can’t you understand human language? Lu Wei’s pupils seemed to ignite with two small flames as she reached out, ready to snatch the microphone from Chen Yushu and throw it back.
Just then, Chen Yushu suddenly stood up.
Huh??? Lu Wei’s eyes widened in shock, unable to believe what she was seeing. She reached out to pull Chen Yushu back, only to watch her follow the boy onto the stage.
Lu Wei’s gaze followed closely, still in a state of disbelief.
The accompaniment music slowly began, and the boy’s voice came through the microphone first.
“Honey honey.”
“Honey honey.”
“Honey, you put love in my heart.”
Gradually, Lu Wei snapped out of her daze and let out an exasperated laugh.
What kind of nonsense is this? Right in front of me, he’s right in front of me!
Lu Wei was both furious and frustrated, her chest heaving violently as she glared at the two on stage, wishing she could tear the boy apart.
Chen Yushu gripped the microphone tightly, staring stiffly ahead as she softly sang along.
When it came to the duet part, the boy suddenly nudged her arm, signaling for her to look at him.
The two faced each other as they sang, their voices blending together.
“Pick a song for honey, sweet words.”
“Transmitted through the air with lots of expressions .”
Holding the microphone in one hand, the boy used his other to gesture an upward curve at his mouth, encouraging Chen Yushu to smile.
Chen Yushu, sweating from nervousness, forced a strained smile.
Watching from below, Lu Wei felt her eyes nearly pop out of her head, her anger boiling over.
Yet, faced with this scene, she was powerless, grinding her teeth in frustration.
Why is this song so long? Is it ever going to end?! How much longer do they have to sing?
Lu Wei was going crazy inside, fidgeting restlessly as she tightly gripped her fork, unconsciously stabbing at the cake on her plate.
Unbeknownst to her, the old lady, seeing her completely absorbed in the stage, had already set her sights on the cake on Lu Wei’s plate.
Damn it! Damn it!! Damn it!
Stay away from Chen Yushu! Get lost! Why are you standing so close? Get away!
The old lady was startled by the sudden outburst of chaos and, in the midst of the commotion, managed to snatch a bite from Lu Wei’s plate.
“Let me savor you in my heart…”
“Honey honey…”
“Honey honey…”
As the song finally ended, Lu Wei’s tightly clenched fist relaxed slightly, and she was about to let out a sigh of relief when she saw the boy form half a heart with his hands toward Chen Yushu.
Chen Yushu paused for a moment, then mirrored the gesture from a distance. The boy quickly moved closer.
Just then, someone holding a camera snapped a few photos of the two.
Lu Wei glanced from the pair to the photographer and nearly fainted from rage. Her fists clenched again, itching to lash out.
Finally, it was over. Chen Yushu set down the microphone with a sigh of relief and returned to her seat.
Lu Wei sat up straight, shooting sidelong glances at Chen Yushu, her entire body radiating resentment and dissatisfaction.
Chen Yushu wiped the sweat from her palms, her gaze drawn to the cake in Lu Wei’s hand. She couldn’t help but ask, “What happened to your cake?”
“What’s wrong?” Lu Wei hummed discontentedly, glancing down just in time to catch someone sneaking a piece of cake.
The old lady had swiftly scooped up a small portion and was about to pop it into her mouth when a stern look from Grandma stopped her in her tracks.
Already annoyed! And now having to watch others show affection!
Fuming, Lu Wei scowled, shoved the cake into his mouth, chewed it vigorously, swallowed, and then spoke slowly in a sarcastic tone, “This has a hint of honey flavor, doesn’t it?”
“Huh?” Chen Yushu tilted her head, confused. “What?”
