How I Accidentally Bent My Best Friend - Chapter 46.2
Chen Yushu stared at her phone screen with mixed feelings and slowly replied, “Okay.”
“Alright, class, let me assign the midterm project,” the teacher suddenly announced from the podium. “Form your own groups of three to five people. Choose a topic related to chemistry, gather relevant materials, and create a PowerPoint presentation. One student from each group will present it in class next week. This will be graded and count toward your final score, so please take it seriously.”
As she listened, Chen Yushu edited a message and sent a grouping table to their group chat.
“Let’s just be a group with our dormmates,” Jiang Yuran suggested. “Is that okay?”
Chen Yushu: “Sure, I’ll fill in our names then.”
“So, who’s making the PowerPoint, and who’s presenting?” Ye Chiwan asked.
Chen Yushu paused for a second before quickly saying, “I’ll make the PowerPoint.”
Xia Ke immediately followed up, “Then I’ll gather the materials!”
Ye Chiwan and Jiang Yuran exchanged a glance and sighed in unison. “Typical of you two.”
Jiang Yuran: “Fine, I’ll do the presentation.”
“Okay, I’ll handle miscellaneous tasks.”
With the roles quickly assigned, Chen Yushu breathed a sigh of relief and continued discussing the topic with them.
Given the broad scope, they debated for a long time and only settled on a topic after evening self-study ended.
Chen Yushu checked the time, guessing that Lu Wei would probably be waiting downstairs by now, and said to the other three, “I’ll head out first. Send me the materials you find, and I’ll finish the PowerPoint as soon as possible.”
“Wait, I just remembered something!” Ye Chiwan suddenly called out to her with a serious expression. “Since Lu Wei is an unofficial member of Room 4008, shouldn’t she contribute to the group project too? Am I right, everyone?”
Jiang Yuran immediately clapped her hands in delight. “Hahaha, absolutely! She’s always hanging out in our dorm, increasing the carbon dioxide levels. She definitely needs to do her part.”
“Alright,” Chen Yushu agreed with a laugh. “Let me think about what she can do.”
“Why are you so late?” Lu Wei asked, her neck sore from craning as she waited. Almost everyone had already left the teaching building by the time Chen Yushu finally showed up.
Chen Yushu told her what had just happened. Upon hearing it, Lu Wei’s eyes lit up, and she chuckled. “Unofficial member? So I hold such a high status in your dorm, huh?”
“Ahem, as long as you know,” Chen Yushu played along, coaxing her. “So, you’re willing to do your part for Room 4008, right?”
“Of course,” Lu Wei tilted her head proudly. “Tell me, what can I do?”
Chen Yushu couldn’t help but chuckle softly and reached out to adjust the strap of Lu Wei’s crossbody bag. “I’ll let you know when I think of something.”
“Okay!”
It was almost the end of March, and the temperature had risen, but the evenings were still a bit chilly. Lu Wei tightened her coat and walked close to Chen Yushu. The quiet path was perfect for sharing heartfelt words.
After this short period of effort, Lu Wei clearly felt that their relationship had warmed up considerably. However, she was still curious about how much her image in Chen Yushu’s heart had improved.
But asking directly was definitely not an option she had to think of a way.
The person beside her suddenly fell silent, and Chen Yushu felt a bit unaccustomed to it. She couldn’t help but ask, “Why aren’t you saying anything?”
“Huh?” Lu Wei snapped out of her thoughts and changed the subject. “Oh, I just remembered my mom said she’s coming to Yuncheng sometime soon.”
Chen Yushu: “Is your aunt planning to visit you?”
“She doesn’t have that kind of free time,” Lu Wei pouted. “She didn’t say what she’s coming for, and I don’t know either.”
Unconsciously, the two of them walked into the small grove they had to pass through to get back to the dorm. The paths crisscrossed, barely wide enough for two people to walk side by side. Lu Wei held a flashlight, walking slightly behind, while Chen Yushu spoke while occasionally glancing back.
Just as they were about to pass through the grove, Chen Yushu suddenly noticed a flower stuck to the trunk of a tree. She stopped in her tracks and said to Lu Wei, “Look over there there seems to be a flower.”
“Really?” Lu Wei shone the flashlight over in confusion. “Oh, it really is and it’s a white rose.”
Hearing this, Chen Yushu’s heart stirred.
Lu Wei: “There seems to be writing on the note.”
Chen Yushu nodded, but the light was too dim to make out what was written. “Alright, let’s go.”
“Go? I’m going to see what it says.” With that, Lu Wei stepped over the bushes, walked over, and took the flower down.
Watching her actions, Chen Yushu was startled and immediately disapproved. “Lu Wei, what are you doing? Put it back right now!”
Lu Wei paid no attention and instead read the words on the note with great interest. “Congratulations on finding this. As a reward, I can grant you one wish for free. Chen Yushu, did you hear that?”
“Stop looking and put it back!” Chen Yushu called out anxiously.
Ignoring her, Lu Wei held the white rose reverently and said, “Then I’ll make a wish, I want to be with Chen Yushu for the rest of my life.”
The wind rustled through the falling leaves, and the world seemed to grow quiet in that moment. Chen Yushu’s heart tightened. After a moment, she finally spoke, “Alright, put it back where it was.”
“No,” Lu Wei shook her head. “I have to see if the wish came true.”
Chen Yushu gritted her teeth. “Lu Wei! How much did you drink today?”
“Wait! Shushu, look it seems like it came true. There’s something under the tree.”
“What?” Chen Yushu craned her neck but hadn’t seen anything yet when Lu Wei suddenly crouched down, brushed away the leaves on the surface, and pulled out a gift box.
Seeing this, Chen Yushu was so anxious she nearly stamped her feet. She hurried over and said urgently, “Lu Wei, stop messing around! This might be someone’s confession setup put it back!”
“Is that so?” Lu Wei blinked in confusion, then took the card from the gift box and opened it right in front of her.
Chen Yushu’s pupils dilated in shock as she rushed to stop her. “Don’t mess with other people’s things! Lu Wei!”
Lu Wei stifled a laugh, holding the card to one side, and read softly, “Happy tenth anniversary to Chen Yushu and Lu Wei. If we calculate based on a lifespan of eighty years, you still have sixty-two years to spend together. At such an important moment.”
“Lu Wei! Put it back right n—” Chen Yushu was solely focused on snatching it back, but only when Lu Wei read the latter part did she react. “Wh-what did you just say?”
“Here.” Lu Wei handed her the card, shining a light on it as she whispered softly by her ear, “See? I told you it could really come true.”
Chen Yushu held the card and silently read the words again in her heart.
At such an important moment, may Chen Yushu and Lu Wei open their hearts, sincerely accept each other, and walk hand in hand through life.
Below the message were both their names, with Lu Wei’s name accompanied by a fingerprint.
Chen Yushu’s grip on the card tightened slightly, her voice a little hoarse as she said to Lu Wei, “Move your phone farther away, the light is glaring.”
“Alright.” Lu Wei turned off the flashlight and pulled an ink pad from her bag. “You have to make your mark too, then it’ll be official.”
In the darkness, Chen Yushu stared directly at Lu Wei, her emotions completely unveiled, growing even more intense under the cover of night.
Then Lu Wei turned the light back on, tucked her phone under her chin, took Chen Yushu’s hand, pressed it onto the ink pad, and solemnly stamped it onto the card.
Chen Yushu lowered her head, staring somewhat dazedly at their two names.
“Now you can’t back out.” Lu Wei cheerfully took the card, planted a joyful kiss on it, and carefully tucked it back into her bag.
Chen Yushu glanced at her quickly, then lowered her hand, slowly rubbing the ink from her fingertip.
Lu Wei was still immersed in happiness, but she knew well that promises only held weight when both parties were willing. So, she would strive to make this promise last forever.
With the light off, the surroundings plunged into darkness, and a nameless unease crept into Lu Wei’s heart. Unable to resist, she gently hugged Chen Yushu and softly called her name.
An inexplicable tension filled the air. Chen Yushu’s breath hitched as she slowly responded, “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing, I’m just… just afraid that one day you’ll grow to dislike me, and then… then leave me.” Lu Wei struggled to finish the sentence, her voice unconsciously trembling with tears at the end.
Chen Yushu’s heart softened. She patted Lu Wei’s back and said, “Why do you always think about things like that?”
Lu Wei parted her lips, an impulse to confess everything rising within her, but the words retreated timidly before they could escape. “I’m just scared, alright? So, can I do more things you like? Then maybe you’ll like me a little more and dislike me a little less?”
“I don’t dislike you.”
Not disliking meant liking.
This equivalence made Chen Yushu’s heart tighten, afraid Lu Wei might notice. But then she reminded herself that in Lu Wei’s dictionary, “liking” had nothing to do with romance she didn’t need to overthink it.
Hearing this, Lu Wei relaxed slightly, but her heart remained suspended.
After all, Chen Yushu was the queen of saying one thing and meaning another.
