How I Accidentally Bent My Best Friend - Chapter 45.1
Lu Wei was dressed exceptionally beautifully today a cardigan sweater paired with a skirt, topped with a cream-colored cotton coat. Her platinum curls were braided into two pigtails draped over her shoulders, giving off a lazy yet casual vibe. Her makeup was especially exquisite.
A slight step closer, and a delicate fragrance wafted into the air not cloying, unlike her usual slightly sweet fruity scent. This time, it was a light floral aroma with a hint of youthful maturity.
Whether it was her imagination or not, she felt that Lu Wei’s beauty today carried an inexplicable sense of formality.
From the moment Chen Yushu came downstairs, Lu Wei had been carefully observing her expression. Under Chen Yushu’s intense gaze, Lu Wei’s cheeks flushed slightly, and she suddenly felt uneasy, unable to meet her eyes.
It was Chen Yushu who snapped out of it first, saying, “Let’s go.”
“Oh, okay.” Lu Wei stiffly turned around, tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, and unconsciously breathed a sigh of relief before taking small steps forward.
However, she didn’t hear Chen Yushu’s footsteps behind her. Puzzled, she turned back to look and saw Chen Yushu with her eyes lowered, staring intently at something.
“Why did you bring a bouquet of flowers?” Chen Yushu’s heart tightened slightly, but she feigned nonchalance as she asked, “Who gave it to you?”
“Ah, right, right, right.” Only then did Lu Wei remember the flowers in her hand that she hadn’t given yet. She hurried forward a few steps, holding them with both hands, and smilingly handed them to Chen Yushu. “These are for you.”
Chen Yushu secretly breathed a sigh of relief, lazily took the flowers, and then lowered her gaze to examine them. “Why are you giving me these?”
“The little flower earlier was buried in the snow, so I’m giving you a real one.” Lu Wei clasped her hands behind her back. “You can make a wish with this one too.”
Chen Yushu’s grip on the bouquet tightened slightly. She glanced at Lu Wei quickly and murmured, “Why are you suddenly.”
Why that expression? Oh no, does she really find me dull and boring on ordinary days? Lu Wei lightly bit her lip, inwardly cursing in frustration. It seems I’ll have to do more things like this in the future. I can’t let Chen Yushu get tired of me!
“It’s my fault.” Lu Wei sighed heavily. “Let’s go. I’ll be more mindful from now on!”
What? Chen Yushu was baffled, looking up in confusion at Lu Wei’s retreating figure. What did she just say? I don’t get it.
The snow continued to fall, and in no time, it dusted both of them.
Walking side by side, Lu Wei kept stealing glances out of the corner of her eye, then looking down at her outfit, and even opening her compact mirror to check her makeup her little gestures were incessant.
I look quite pretty, though. Why isn’t Chen Yushu reacting?
Lu Wei frowned in confusion, speculating, Could it be that I’m overdressed, and Chen Yushu is unhappy about being upstaged?
But, She tilted her head to glance at Chen Yushu’s profile and couldn’t help but swallow. Chen Yushu is already so beautiful as she is!
If she were any prettier, she’d inevitably attract others’ covetous gazes! Lu Wei pouted, unable to resist scanning their surroundings. Seeing no one around, she relaxed.
Still, if they went out together, it would be fine. She definitely wouldn’t let anyone else seize an opportunity.
With that thought, Lu Wei stepped forward, tightly linking her arm with Chen Yushu’s and leaning possessively against her shoulder.
Chen Yushu stiffened on one side, keeping her eyes fixed straight ahead, inwardly wondering, Why does Lu Wei seem so off today? Did she take the wrong medicine?
Once they left the school gate, the two hailed a cab to the barbecue restaurant.
It was peak dining hours, and the restaurant was packed. As soon as she stepped inside, Lu Wei scanned the surroundings and, spotting a table in the corner where a group had just left, hurried over to claim the seats.
After settling in, Lu Wei picked up the menu, quickly ordered, and then glanced at Chen Yushu sitting across from her. Seeing her engrossed in her phone with her head down, Lu Wei couldn’t help but let out a soft huff, hoping to catch her attention.
However, the noisy atmosphere of the barbecue joint drowned out her small gesture. Annoyed, Lu Wei shifted her gaze and happened to notice a couple at the next table. She then looked back and forth between them and her own companion with Chen Yushu.
A moment later, she cleared her throat, stood up, and dawdled her way over to Chen Yushu’s side.
“What’s up?” Chen Yushu finally looked up.
“Scoot in. I want to sit here.” With that, Lu Wei squeezed onto the edge of the seat, nudging Chen Yushu further inside.
Chen Yushu stared at her in confusion, and before she could react, she was already pushed toward the inner side.
The distance between them suddenly shrank, and Lu Wei nodded in satisfaction. She began bumping her leg against Chen Yushu’s, and eventually just rested her leg on Chen Yushu’s lap, swinging it playfully.
Just then, their food arrived. Reluctantly, Lu Wei stood up, took the tongs, and started grilling the meat.
As the oil heated up, the meat sizzled, its surface gradually turning a tempting golden-brown, filling the air with a rich, savory aroma.
Chen Yushu’s stomach growled at the sight. She picked up her chopsticks and asked impatiently, “Is it done yet?”
“Wait a bit longer. This cut has some fatty parts in the middle you won’t like it. It’ll taste better if we crisp it up a little more,” Lu Wei replied, flipping the meat as she spoke.
“Oh.” Chen Yushu licked her lips, set her chopsticks down quietly, and took a sip of juice.
As the grilling continued, smoke began to rise, growing thicker and billowing straight into Lu Wei’s face. The pungent fumes hit her nostrils, and she quickly turned her head, sneezing.
“Maybe you should sit over there?” Chen Yushu suggested, reaching out to take the tongs from Lu Wei. “Let me handle the grilling.”
No sooner had she spoken than a loud pop sounded hot oil splattered. Startled, Chen Yushu immediately pulled her hand back.
“Are you okay?” Lu Wei leaned over, grabbed her hand to check, and said, “I’ll keep grilling. You move back a bit watch out for the oil.”
Chen Yushu nervously shrank back. “Weird, how come nothing happens when you grill, but the moment I try, it splatters?”
“Seems like I’ll have to be the one cooking for you from now on,” Lu Wei said, unable to hide a smug wiggle of her neck.
“You know how to cook? Since when?” Chen Yushu let out a disdainful “Ew.” “Just grilling some meat and you’re already this full of yourself.”
“Well, if it weren’t for me grilling, someone would be going hungry.” Right on cue, the meat was ready. Lu Wei picked up a piece, blew on it to cool it, and brought it to Chen Yushu’s lips. “Careful, it’s hot.”
Chen Yushu turned her head away. “I can feed myself. I don’t need you to.” She picked up her chopsticks to grab a piece herself, but as she reached out pop another splatter.
“Hahaha, just let me feed you. Come on, open up.”
Faced with such delicious food, Chen Yushu could only surrender without pride. “Mmm, so good!”
“Of course, look who’s grilling it.” Lu Wei picked out the leaner pieces and put them all in Chen Yushu’s bowl, keeping the rest for herself. Then she started grilling a new batch. “Eat up, there’s plenty more.”
Chen Yushu ate piece after piece, so content that she began swinging her feet under the table. Mumbling through a full mouth, she noticed Lu Wei was still standing and tugged at the hem of her shirt, signaling for her to sit down and eat too.
“It’s fine, you eat first. I have to keep flipping these, or they’ll burn easily.”
Chen Yushu nodded, picked up another piece with her chopsticks, blew on it to cool it down, dipped it in some chili powder, and holding it carefully, brought it to Lu Wei’s lips. “Try it.”
“Mhm.” Lu Wei carefully took a bite and savored it slowly. “Mmm, as expected of my grilled meat. Oh my god, what a grilling genius I am! Look at you, aren’t you totally captivated by me?”
Chen Yushu had been about to pick up another piece for her, but upon hearing this, she shuddered in mock disgust and immediately put the meat into her own mouth. “Let’s skip the oil for the rest of the grilling.”
“Why?” Lu Wei didn’t catch the underlying meaning and replied seriously, “If we don’t use oil.”
“What I mean is,” Chen Yushu teased, giving her a sidelong glance, “with you around, there’s already enough oil.”
Lu Wei instantly understood and called out her name in protest.
Chen Yushu burst out laughing and picked up another piece of meat to coax her. Lu Wei pouted but ate it anyway, all the while keeping her eyes on Chen Yushu as she flipped the meat.
“It’s delicious.”
Lu Wei’s gaze paused briefly, landing on the tip of the chopsticks, then shifted to Chen Yushu’s slightly reddened lips. For some reason, it occurred to her that she had just used Chen Yushu’s chopsticks.
Just then, Chen Yushu asked, “Want some juice?”
Lu Wei blinked, pulling her gaze back, and looked at the slightly flattened straw in front of her. Her mind went blank for a second.
What the hell! Why did she suddenly notice that? It’s not like she had a cleanliness obsession!
Suppressing the strange feeling in her heart, Lu Wei gently bit the straw and took a small sip.
At that moment, someone called her name. Lu Wei turned around in confusion the couple at the neighboring table was gone, replaced by a group of familiar faces.
“Lu Wei! What a coincidence!” One of them immediately hooked an arm around her neck, trying to pull her over. “Haven’t seen you in so long! Today, you have to.”
“Wait, wait!” Lu Wei gripped the back of her chair, resisting the pull.
Chen Yushu sat quietly, expressionlessly flipping the meat on the grill.
“What’s going on with you?” the person asked.
Lu Wei glanced at Chen Yushu. Before she could even make out the expression on her face, she was chilled by the icy aura surrounding her. In that instant, she suddenly understood what “philandering” and “fickleness” meant in the little notebook.
What a disaster! She couldn’t repeat the same mistakes!
Lu Wei couldn’t help but curse herself inwardly and quickly lowered her voice, saying to the person, “Not today. Can’t you see I’m with someone?”
“What’s the big deal?” the person said dismissively. “Invite them along.”
“Go away, go away! I’m having a romantic evening. Who wants to hang out with you?”
“What do you mean?” The person glanced over at Chen Yushu, then their eyes fell on the bouquet of flowers on the opposite seat. Suddenly understanding, they said, “Oh, I see! Well, But why did you tell Wen Yan you were as straight as steel? And now you’re dating.”
Lu Wei frowned. “What are you talking about?” Afraid that Chen Yushu would get angry from waiting, she had no time to clarify and hurriedly pushed the person away. “Now that you know, my meat’s about to burn. Get lost already.”
“Alright, alright, I won’t disturb your romantic evening.”
Finally having sent them away, Lu Wei picked up the tongs to continue grilling, her eyes constantly darting toward Chen Yushu’s face.
“Why are you staring at me?” Chen Yushu looked up and rolled her eyes. “Is there meat on my face?”
Lu Wei swallowed nervously, feeling guilty. She’s definitely angry! No, she had to fix this she couldn’t let what should have been a perfect date be ruined like this.
“Ahem, are you upset?” After a moment of hesitation, Lu Wei tentatively spoke up. “I didn’t plan on going with them.”
Chen Yushu rolled her eyes again. “Who wants to bother with you, social butterfly.”
Social butterfly?!
Damn it, Chen Yushu really thought of her as a flirtatious woman!
